[1991-09-21-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: Ric Flair & Bobby Heenan
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1991
Knew we were coming up on the Thunderlips promo and here it is. I agree that a few of the particulars are off from Flair in the WWF so far but he has been pretty super in his promos and that combined with the great Hogan promo seemed to be setting up the slow burn to Mania. -
Decent stuff but another match of Finlays early days where I seemingly admired the craft of the work than the match overall as a whole. I don't know if it is the rounds system of the quirkiness. I also looked over my MOTY list as we head into the home stretch and realized that while 1991 may not have the top end matches of some other years (1997 cough) , it is a well rounded year with tons of matches I have in the *** - ***1/2 range.

[1991-09-15-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Interview: Randy Savage
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1991
Holy shit what an amazing interview, possibly my favorite Savage one in history. Savage balling up his intensity and projecting onto Roberts and also using Sid as a vehicle to gain some revenge is great. One of my favorite things from the year and really underrated from a historical standpoint. -
Looked like a fun card in the Omni and Sting wins the US championship. Austin does look like an idiot at the finish. Promo work again has been good. Im more interested in all the US promotions currently than a month ago for each.

[1991-09-14-WCW-Saturday Night] Danger Zone: Lex Luger and Harley Race

Paul E is everywhere. I have been steadily impressed by the build to this main event at Havoc. simple but effective stuff.- 6 replies

Cant believe how much of a pop the Patriots winning got. I don't like how they dont even acknowledge the thought that Jack himself could be behind the master plan for sting. He gives a better promo here but it does seem like a little bit of a retread of last year even though the execution is better.

A lot to digest here. First the clips from the MSC look a lot more heated than the previous one and I had such glee in Billy Joe coming back. Hickerson looks really fat for sure and he is having a squash when Lawler starts up trouble. This results in a great brawl featuring everyone from USWA at the time and had a lot of huge highlights. Lawler gives a spirited promo hyping up Monday night. The Mantell stuff with the Hansen hotline cracks me up. Marlin swerves Dutch and calls the hotline. We have another big match Mon with Dutch's hair vs. Dragon Masters mask.

[1991-09-14-USWA-Memphis TV] Jeff Jarrett & Robert Fuller vs PYTs
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1991
These guys are neither pretty or young looking and the lifeless MSC crowd seems to agree with me. The clips of this was really bad and Gossett chasing Christopher Honey Love was one of the worst moments on the 1991 yearbook. -
Hogan PPV? Doesn't sound like a winner to me. Gene announces Hogan as the champion of the universe which had me rolling my eyes but Hulk comes out and cuts a great promo with a lower and more serious tone than usual when he addresses Flair. It puts over the gravity of the situation in the right way. Really enjoyed this.

[1991-09-12-W*ING] Mr Pogo & TNT vs Iceman & Akitoshi Saito (Cage)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1991
Glad everyone dug this as I was shocked by how focused and violent built around the hatred it was. Not many stunts that would creep into the style later on it seemed and TNT looked really good here dishing out some vicious punishment. Gypsy Joe at the end was a nice addendum to the whole scene.- 6 replies

Fun ass match. Lots of wacky stuff going on surrounded by the turtle gimmick but the action was still hot and featured some neat armdrags and a super dive train in the final caida. The crowd seemed to really get into this and so did I.

[1991-09-10-NJPW-Battle Autumn] Hiroshi Hase vs Tatsumi Fujinami
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1991
I appreciated the old-school feel of most of this. I did think Fujinami's comeback and eventual win came too easy but as a lay and pray ground oriented type match, few are better than Hase in my mind and keeping things interesting and working very logical, basic holds in a convincing manner. An under the radar match for the year that you have to be in the right mindset to consume.- 7 replies

[1991-WWF-Supertape] Irwin R. Schyster's Top 10 Tax Tips
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1991
I have that calculator as well. My favorite of these was the one about getting the priest to vouch those so called donations. -
Yeah, I dont think this was Korkuen as before I saw the whole audience was Japanese. The match is pretty terrible and disjointed to all extent. Really only here because of the weirdness of it.

[1991-09-09-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Ric Flair debut
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1991
Weird that they gave Mooney the spotlight, i was banking on Vince or maybe even Gorilla. I hated the scripted booing and the robe here but the overall promo and rejuvenated looking Flair made this worth it. -
[1991-09-08-WCW-Main Event] Dick Slater & Dick Murdoch vs The Enforcers
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1991
I liked this a good deal and thought the FIP stuff on Arn was very focused and featured a lot of vicious little rabbit punches and kicks. Hardliners still being protected is a head scratcher but as a 10 minute contest to fill up a tv spot, this was a ton of fun.- 8 replies

[1991-09-07-WWF-King of the Ring] Ricky Steamboat vs Ted DiBiase
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1991
I thought this was pretty dreadful given the competitors. Generic headlock stuff not really leading anywhere and not being built to anything but the finish. Really disappointing. -
Sting get his third box but instead of a monster its a buxom blonde who kisses Sting and hands him a note. Paul E reads the note from Cactus Jack and then kisses and plays grab ass with the blonde. Pretty clever segment to me.

This was a much better build to the title match than the last part of the clash. Simmons uses his football background to get what he wants and Windham bleeds for his buddy's benefit. Good breakdown making the Havoc match sound like a big deal instead of a thrown together match.

[1991-09-07-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and Eric Embry
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1991
Lawler has retaken the belt and it looks like we are finally getting some focus on what USWA did best in 1991. He gives a good job of running down past texas angles and using PY Chu Hi as a bridge to get to Embry. Embry and Prichard end up fighting based on the clips we have seen and I have to give it to Miss Texas as she went all the way with the head shaving. Embry says he has beat DWB too many times but hell, he will do it again. -
Glad to see everyone dug this as it was one of my favorite matches of the year so far. Kyoko and Bull have matched up well in the matches I have seen so far and this was no exception. Bull is a great bully but can also show some vulnerability. A classic champion. Her being busted open so soon here really added to the intrigue. She comes firing back and this match features one of my favorite sleeper spots of all time with it looking insanely tightly applied. Kyoko is always good for a comeback and she had me biting on some nearfalls in the ending stretch. Not to be outdone, Bull does the cartwheel spot and a moonsault to close it out. Great stuff.
