[1991-11-02-WWF-Superstars] Bret Hart and The Mountie
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
Piper tries to build up bret for this being non title but I'm not buying it. Bret has been aimless the past two months so seeing him in a feud was a welcome change. This was executed well. -
[1991-11-02-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: The Undertaker
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
Crazy to think about that we are in November and right now is our first mention of Hogan/Taker. Flair coming in was great in some areas but really made things scatterbrained in others. This is a good promo and the casket customization is a nice touch. Taker does his longest promo to date. -
I liked this but below most of the other high end Ricochet stuff I have seen from this year. Ricochet is someone that has really improved in my eyes and would for sure be in my top 10 for the year so far. He is able to combine his amazing athleticism and reign in some of the more common tropes that plague Dragon Gate matches. Unfortunately, this match made those tropes come to the surface more than I would have liked. I understand that Mad Blankey is a heel stable and as such, interference will occur but this did tread the line into excessive at times with the referee diverting his attention for minutes at a time to have a discussion with a second on the apron while a bevy of action is occurring in the ring. I also thought Ricochet relied on his leg offense too much. This eventually was his undoing so it played into the overall theme of the match and he did sell after each strike but I would have liked to have seen some new wrinkles added into his offense to counteract all of the damage that Yamato had done on his leg. I am interested to see where both competitors land after this. *** 1/2

Where the Big Boys Play #61 - Wrestlewar 91
soup23 replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Thanks Pete, I do my best to carry Parv on these shows. -
No doubt. I'm sure it was a combination of OJ, Dean, Phil, or someone else but it is what made me want to see the Cibernetico, take a glance at this El Dandy, and loads of other stuff.
-
I'm not sure that this has that big a rep, aside from people pointing to it as an excellent performance from Fuerza and a tremendous carry job. It's miles better than their match from '92 and you only have to watch Octagon's matches against Satanico and Blue Panther to appreciate the fact you found it very good. The Panther matches in particular are eye-clawingly bad. I realize it is shown as a primary example of Fuerza getting something good out of Octagon but I would say this is generally heralded as one of the more highly pimped lucha matches of the 1990's. I know I was aware of this match before I even started watching lucha with any sort of regularity.
-
Octagon vs. Fuerza Guerrero from 11/1/91 feels like the type of match that fits this catagory well for me. Had many elements I really love in wrestling, mask ripping, incredible heel performance, blood, but it still left me cold in spots. Overall I still found it really good just not one of the top 10 lucha matches I have seen so far in the 1990, 1991, 1994 sequence. I would also be interested in some people rewatching the Edge vs. Kurt Angle series from 2002 as I didn't think the Backlash match in particular held up well at all.

My viewing habit has resulted in watching the highlights of most stuff. I usually wait until after Raw/SmackDown air and watch the hot angles/matches coming out of that show. If a match has buzz on twitter, I occasionly will start the DVR and catch up to watch it live. For other stuff, I again rely on other opinions I trust to seek stuff out. If WKO pimps a lucha match, I seek it out. If Voices of Wrestling hypes up a New Japan or Dragon Gate match, I seek it out. If Dylan hypes some obscure southern indy match, I seek it out. This allows me to gain a good tempermant on the entire landscape of pro wrestling without committing myself to one specific area causing blind spots. This tactic could fall into the "jack of all trades, master of none" catagory, but I am already dedicated to watching yearbooks, WCW Supershows for WTBBP, one match from the WWE PPV that is coming up on the PTB podcast, and now two early Raws a month. Cliche to say but I don't feel like I have much time to watch all of everything and as a result, I have to be selective in the current product.

Terrific match. Starts out with a vicious pace and Dynamite getting overwhelmed and then coming ferociously back. Like a good beginning chase seen in a movie, the action drops down in tempo but the mat and leg work remain interesting leading to the big finish. Kansai spills the action to the outside and begins to really dominate Saito. Saito wont give up and gives some flourishes but she looks overwhelmed. Then Kansai dives to the outside and the match takes a sudden turn. Saito pounces and hits a back suplex on the outside before finishing her off. I agree with Pete that this match is smartly worked and made Saito look smart and remained Kansai to look a little overconfident but still dominant. My favorite joshi singles match of the year.

I enjoyed this a great deal but going in this felt like one of the few "all timers" I had never seen before and as a result, I was left a little cold. The first two falls had some good action in them but the awkwardness and pacing of Octagon took me out of the match a little bit. I agree that Fuerza was super as the rudo throughout this whole match and the third caida with the mask ripping and blood really brought the match up to a climax. Great match overall but solidly behind Atlantis vs. Panther and Brazo vs. Santo for lucha in 1991.

Where the Big Boys Play #61 - Wrestlewar 91
soup23 replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Just knowing what is ahead, I think this will probably be WCW's best PPV fairly easily. I may actually have Havoc as #2. -
Go back and forth between this and the previous match. Takano tries some stuff he honestly shouldn't given his restrictions but he tries hard. He did look good on his dropkick and dive to the outside. Tenryu chunked the chair but did look more lethargic than usual. SWS feels fairly dire overall as a promotion by this point.

This felt like about the best we were getting from Yatsu at this point. He is a clear step below Tenryu with his intensity and stiffness with the striking but the match was fun seeing two old rivals clobber each other.

An all spot showcase. Not my favorite type of match at all but most was hit cleanly. Good early look at Asai if nothing else.

[1991-10-28-WWF-MSG, NY] Ric Flair vs Roddy Piper / Interview: Ric Flair
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
Great atmosphere for this match with the crowd giving Flair a huge reaction. Gorilla and Lord Alfred is a commentator booth in hell for me and they don't disappoint by not hitting the right notes of this match at all and not paying attention to the feud these two have built up on tv. The action was good here but rushed. Maybe my favorite Piper vs. Flair match though that I have seen on tape. Flair has some great punches in this and even wins with a pinfall using the ropes as an assist. Flair cuts a good backstage promo throwing some insults Hogan's way. -

[1991-10-27-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Lex Luger vs Ron Simmons (2/3 falls)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
Really liked this. A lot of factors were up against it (short on time, unestablished new champ, new challenger in first main event) but they crafted a match that played to each of their strengths and Luger looks poised to have a lengthy reign with the belt. The finish to each fall built on top of one another and the addition of Race and Dusty added a little sizzle to the match overall. Pleasure to watch.- 14 replies

Where the Big Boys Play #61 - Wrestlewar 91
soup23 replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Thanks for all the comments. This felt like a show where we needed some help filling in the lines on some stuff. Loss, Ross mainly apologized for his comments during the arm wrestling match between Paul E and Missy at the Clash. I am not sure what tv show he apologized on or even if he did it as a "hotline" exclusive. -

[1991-10-27-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Steve Austin vs Dustin Rhodes
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
I have always really liked this match and it felt like a big moment for both Dustin and Austin in watching them grow throughout this yearbook. They get 15 minutes to stretch things out here and do an admirable job building things up slowly with ground wrestling leading to a big bump by Dustin and some double juice. The commentary is fantastic with Tony picking up on all the mistakes each competitor does and JR putting over Austin huge. Finish is still dramatic even though it is predictable.- 10 replies

[1991-10-27-WCW-Halloween Havoc] WCW Phantom and Paul E. Dangerously
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
I loved the promo Paul gave here and even though it was inevitable that Rude was under the hood after the match he had earlier, it was still a great reveal with the woman shrieking music, his tights, and him cutting a Rude promo. This felt like a big pickup for WCW and them turning things around.- 11 replies

I still don't know what quite to think of this match. Campy fun but some really great bumps mixed in and some big time legends inside the match. The refer-eye should be renamed the reefer-eye because someone was high when they thought of that one. Finish is still dumb with the lever dropping but this is certainly the good and bad of WCW in one snapshot.
