Interesting brawl between two no names and really heated. Samples flinging the coffee pot was especially brutal. I always can count on Memphis to have some of these local tie ins.

[1997-02-06-CMLL Japan] El Hijo del Santo vs Negro Casas
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
I kind of compare this to their early 1991 match as a travelling style match. That is not a bad thing per say as they still have a 3.5 star affair and we do get the wrinkle of Santo being the rudo here , but it didn't feel like we were treading new water and this only served as an appetizer for their feature matches coming up later in the year.- 6 replies

Funny to see Colt at this age. Piper always has a problem of saying a couple of things that make you go huh. We had two here with the Rubiks Cube thing and the San Francisco with my fisto line at the end. However, you can sort of just throw that off as Piper being a wiry person and everything else he does in the segment is gold. He transforms himself from the old, battered father that wants to be a family man to the crazed maniac that can't give up the chance at the belt and a piece of Hogan. Hogan and Bischoff were also amazing at goading him into this match. Vince as a heel both in 1997 and 1998 I'm sure will be amazing but Bischoff I think gets shortchanged as he has been incredible so far this year and the perfect Boss suck up that the group keeps around because of the power he weilds but he is not aware of it. This was a good way to build heat for the rematch and make it feel like there was an issue left to decide.

[1997-02-03-WCW-Nitro] DDP, The Outsiders, Randy Savage and Sting
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
That Giant NWO shirt Nash was wearing was ugly. DDP is able to get a chair and we basically have a 5 man staring contest. Probably my least favorite DDP segment so far but we are still getting some development at least. -
[1997-02-03-WWF-Raw] Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin and Sid
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
I guess Jose was dropped by this point as we get no mention of him. THe crowd looks big for Raw but between the lightning and the entrance ramp something feels off. Shawns promo was a little rambling but when Bret comes out and calls him a jackass it heats up. Shawn vs. Bret at WM 13 looks like a big time match right now as they have been very careful not to have them touch. I caught the Degenerate line to which I find pretty cool. Austin comes out and we have a big pull apart between him and Bret. I thought Sid was going to blindside Shawn but he ends up just jawing at him and leaving. At the end we are left with Bret stepping on the belt and then flicking off Shawn. Good stuff all around. -
[1997-02-01-ECW-Crossing the Line Again] Tommy Rich vs Terry Funk
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
This was some good southern style brawling. There was not a whole lot of bravado in what they were doing but both guys made good strikes and made this an entertaining watch. I enjoyed this for what it was but can see this not being a fit for everyone.- 8 replies

[1997-02-01-ECW-Crossing the Line Again] Paul E. Dangerously promo
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
Paul E gives the state of the union address. He announces the Taz vs. Sabu match officially and also announces that it will be on PPV. ECW did a great job making the fans dependent on the product and Paul E sells it with all he has.- 6 replies

[1997-02-01-WWF-Shotgun Saturday Night] Interview: Headbangers
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
I guess the Headbangers are not the sisters of love and know they vomit on themselves. This seemed like straight shock value and not up to snuff with most of the other Shotgun stuff. -
The action outside with Raven beating on the sandman is pretty bad. Sandman makes a comeback but Lori interferes. Sandman rips her dress to reveal a BWO shirt. They come out of the back and Stevie superkicks Raven this time explicitly without any misconception being made. The pin with Raven landing on the Sandman looked weird. They are doing a good job though of setting up the core four for the Barely Legal title angle.

Raven vs. Stevie is also a fairly complicated angle. This quick hit stuff if raven at his best so he cant get all philosophical.

Between Taz and Funk, this is the most I am invested in ECW right now. This was a great promo with him saying that he will run through the gate keeper, RVD on his path with Sabu.

Terry winding Dreamer's latest attack into Dory sr. going for the belt in 1973 is amazing. We turn out that Dory Sr. had a heart attack while wrestling. We get the story of how he died in a powerful moment. Funk then sets his sights on winning the championship from Raven.

Vince starts off in the ring double teaming the Giant. He is able to fend that off and we get our usual where Giant whips Hogan's ass. Vince again interferes and gets tossed. Eric hammering away on those axehandles is hilarious. The outsiders comes in wearing Hogan shirts and go to town on him. Luger stands besides the Giant but its still ambivalent who side he is on.

Hogan wearing an Outsiders shirt is nice. Hogan talking about reverse fireman carries and him insinuating that Giant quit is amazing. Hogan runs down the has beens including Piper, Savage, and now the Giant. Sting/ Savage in the rafters looks cool. I like how they still act like Sting and Savage are in the NWO. Hulk accepts the giants challenge so thats three matches between those two in January.

[1997-01-27-WCW-Nitro] Randy Anderson, NWO, Rick and Scott Steiner
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
The laugh the Outsiders give randy when Bisch terminates him never gets old. Hall wont even shake his hand on the way out. Randy really sells this. The Steiners return the titles and all is right in the NWO world. Hall wants Dog Faces.- 8 replies

Lawler says he cant understand why these people cheer Shawn Michaels. You and me both brother. They are still bringing up Sid as a huge contender in this segment. Shawn gives a fairly wooden promo and the crowd is dead for his segment. Bret comes out and is a little less whiny and controlled than last week but he acts like its a foregone conclusion he will be facing Michaels to which Vince responds that he is overlooking Sid. Taker is next to the frey. He says that he has been screwed more than Bret and took too much of a backseat. Pretty good promo by taker here. SCSA comes out to absolutely no pop. Lawler says he loves this guy. JR interviewing him in the aisle is an excellent touch. " From what I see right now, I see three cry babies and little boy blue" Vader with Paul is at the entrance and SCSA heads to the back and has some words with Vader. This felt a lot like the type of segments we see weekly on Raw.

[1997-01-25-WCW-NWO Souled Out] Hulk Hogan vs The Giant
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
The Giant looks huge compared to Hogan. I also couldnt believe how quickly he got up from the legdrop. Patrick predictably doesn't count after the chokeslam and he receives one for his troubles. Ditto for Buff, VK, and Bubba. Bisch hands Hulk a guitar and a pep talk. The bump with the guitar looks awkward but w get a big NWO beatdown to end the show among debris.- 8 replies

[1997-01-25-WCW-NWO Souled Out] Eddy Guerrero vs Syxx (Ladder)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
There was a couple of blown spots but it seemed to progress nicely to me where there wasn't an obvious example of it getting cut short or anything. I could see maybe a few more dueling climbing spots but that is about it.- 13 replies

[1997-01-25-WCW-NWO Souled Out] Eddy Guerrero vs Syxx (Ladder)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
I liked this match a lot as building up to the ladder spots and Eddy being neutralized by Syxx with his strikes. Syxx also looked like a strong NWO member by being out there on his own. Eddy was able to build up a lot of crowd support and this may be the loudest "eddy" chants to date in WCW. Bischoff did yammer on about the Steiners match a bit too much in this match but at other points him and Dibiase were great with Dibiase talking about Hall helping train Syxx for the ladder match and Bisch giving some credit to Eddy throughout the match.- 13 replies

I am not the best person to discuss the Steiners so I will stay out of this debate. The action we saw here was ok and the ending popped the crowd but the viewer at home was assured by Eric that the decision will be overturned. It doesn't feel like they had completly burned out on this bait and switch finish stuff yet, but they were getting close.

I liked this a good deal. I needed something to keep my attention at 11:00 PM and this fit the bill. Some really stiff strikes and a lot of desperation between the two workers. I also liked Yamada seizing the victory in a good upset moment.
