I would had bet my mortgage that this thread was started by Brick.

Crazy how little has changed set wise in 16 years.

This reached next level for me mainly for the astute director position of just filming Terry's boots. That was so powerful and got across the old grandpa telling a life story to his grandson who whines about having it so bad. Funk is awesome in 1997.

Why? Have a pretty big bias against the Steniers. Just a team I never really enjoy and between the yearbooks and podcast watching, not much has changed.

New Japan juniors are a blast this year. This was a sprint to the finish but was an offensive flurry where everything looked great. Taikawa was the weakest but still delivered a beefy death valley driver and he took all of Liger's offense in the closing section really well. Otani doesn't take the pin which makes me happy and it did feel unique to see Benoit in this setting and he made the most of it by delivering a great performance.

I think it was right to keep this thing on in full. Nitro hasn't really had a mis step in a while until this and its still a very interesting thing to look back and reflect on. I actually asked my dad tonight if he remembered this and he said, "that was the most boring thing in any wrestling show you ever dragged me to."

Bischoff proved he could show some patience to during this time. Sting in 1997 is amazing to think about how drawn out it was. Really looking forward in 1998 how this change in philosophy switches and then we get the amplified Russo years.

Sort of reminded me of Chigusa vs. Ozaki in that something was just missing from this being a great match. I also thought like in that match that Atlantis was way better than black Warrior in this match. The third caida especially had some interesting work on the legs and the finish was satisfying. Fun watch.

The whole gang is out including Sting. Pretty standard promo stuff with Hogan burying Piper's team. I am again interested with the direction here as it does seem from March - late June there was some uncertainty besides continuing the Sting storyline and Macho vs. DDP.

This is an interesting segment on so many levels on its own but even more interesting that this happened in the Omni. For a building so famous in wrestling , this symbolized the lasting image as WCW never ran another event in the Omni. This was a particular frustrating time to be a fan in Georgia because of Bischoff's insistence to leave Atlanta being associated with WCW and WWF still not running there either. I remember this show almost as vivid as the later 7/6/98 and 1/4/99 Nitros especially this segment. Being there live, it died an awful death. Around 10 minutes too long and really botched as they scrapped this whole concept by the next week.

[1997-03-03-WCW-Nitro] Eric Bischoff and Harvey Schiller
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1997
Agree with your point on the babyfaces Loss. LIke I said in the Outsiders Superbrawl tag, I think they were booked too weak around this time which surprised me even if it did lead to some great Bischoff moments. This was good use of an authority figure one upping Bischoff and Gene is at his antagonizing self.- 6 replies

Kind of surprised to see Childs call this a spotfest. It was athletically oriented but had enough structure and tones that I would not classify it as a spotfest. I thought it was a terrific wrestling match. Sometimes Owen can wrestle a match and he is my favorite wrestler in the world. He does a great subtle heel job here showing off his stuff and taking advantages without resulting to numerous shortcuts he would versus any other opponent. I really enjoyed the ending with how they went back and forth and embraced at the end.

"How many one-legged people could go 25 minutes with three of the top wrestlers in the world" NONE! Terrific promo with Austin hyping the submission match. Austin paints himself as the underdog due to his lack of technical expertise. Stone Cold guarantee that he wont say I quit.

This may be the most unique venue wise WWF has ever been. So far they have been in the Alamo Dome, Mahattan Center, Sky Dome, Germany, Peen Station, and a bar. Mankind gives a promo in German adding some local flavor.

I thought this was great. This wasn't the most technical match but that sort of dodgy theme played well with me in the context of the shooters in All Japan territory theme. Kawada's strike were even crisper than normal and Takayama had equally heated exchanges with him and Taue proving himself. Felt different from anything else in All Japan in 1997.

[1997-02-28-BattlARTS] Yuki Ishikawa vs Alexander Otsuka
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
Atmosphere was different enough that it didn't take away the match for me. I also think shoot style is the one wrestling style that I don't mind having less than great heat. Work here was very good with Otsuka pulling out a lot of funky submissions. Ending was too abrupt for this to be anything truly memorable though. Good primer for Battlarts. ' -
[1997-02-24-WCW-Nitro] Lex Luger & The Giant vs Harlem Heat
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
Glad the announcers weren't dumb and knew bischoffs plan. Luger for his part is also not an idiot here as he know he doesn't have much clout and was still able to get something in return in Bischoff agreeing to the Uncensored match. Luger gives a hell of a promo. I am interested to see how Hogan will be acting in the next few months as he doesn't really have a ongoing challenger until the Luger feud in the Summer. Sting comes out and gets embraced by Hogan which seems like he has joined the NWO. -
Awesome NWO Party with the main principles. Hall as the hype man throughout this was a good choice as he officially introduces Savage as NWO. Them presenting Savage with Liz and Ted Dibiase of all people helping escort her was surreal to see. Hogan is again glorious as the gloating champion.

[1997-02-24-WCW-Nitro] Diamond Dallas Page vs David Taylor
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
Savage sneak attack from behind looked really good and was the perfect starter to a feud that will continue throughout the year. -
Really want to pinpoint when Austins strikes improved. In 1990-1991 they were average at best. I cant really recall in the 1994 yearbook what they looked like but by where I'm at in 1997 right now, they are really good.

[1997-02-24-WCW-Nitro] Eddy Guerrero & Chris Jericho vs Meng & Barbarian
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
This seems like a match that when people still say stuff like "Nitro had great matches every week", this is what they mean. We are 8 weeks in and this is the first very good match of Nitro so far. I watched all of the 1997 season 3-4 years ago and there just wasn't a ton of super great matches and WWE currently has a higher weekly match quality than Nitro. Anyway, this match is a big bag of fun. The faces of Fear were pulling out all sorts of power spots and combos and reverting back to their WM 7 days. I doubt it has the depth to be in my top 100 at year end but as a way to throw some guys out there to kill some time on a tv show, this was perfect. -
D Von looked to be auditioning hard as he was throwing himself into every bump. Lawler vs. Paul gets escalated on commentary and we end the segment with a chaotic scene of them going after each other and Lawler standing on the announce table.

In an edgy universe WWF is creating especially on this show, this video is so ridiculous.
