I was sort of blown away by this promo. Taz didn't seem to have a ton of focus but he did have a big presence and I could see how with interviews like this people were scared shitless about him and talked him up as a badass when he came to the WWF. He lays into a fan and we get some buildup to him vs. Sabu.

Something about the way this was filmed made it look goofy like Tommy couldnt hear or see 4 people coming in on him. The beatdown was good and I do enjoy the chants the ECW audience would throw Francine's way as while it did in some ways get themselves over it at least kept the face/heel narrative of the promotion.

[1997-01-25-USWA-TV] Flash Flanagan update / PG-13 promo
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Flash's father was brutal. He is no John Cena Sr. Things pick up with the Pg-13 promo in studio. They are excellent heels at this point and extremely hate-able. -
[1997-01-25-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler and the Make-a-Wish Foundation
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Yeah these are the moments in a yearbook that really push it over the top as my favorite wrestling sets. Tons of great matches together are awesome but can allow you to burn out. Little moments like this and the hotline commercials really give you a sense of watching this stuff now and make you feel a connection to the products you are watching. This was class stuff by Jerry and I like how he always gives the kids a say but doesnt put them in a spot to fail and makes them the star of the segment. -
The ref was Bruno for this. Tons of fun and its refreshing to see some time given to studio matches in 1997 as that is something USWA could do to differentiate themselves from the growing competition. I may be drawing a blank on something obvious but it doesnt feel like we have a ton of Smothers vs. Lawler on tape and that feels like a natural pairing. I am still really loving the NOD interaction around this time and the leg drop Christopher delivered looked really good.

[1997-01-22-RINGS-Mega Battle Tournament] Volk Han vs Kiyoshi Tamura
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
This was a great display of shoot wrestling. I don't want to say this was an exhibition because that gives the wrong impression but this did exhibit most of the best attributes that can make a shoot style match work including multiple moves that me wringing out my own limbs. The match is also fairly short and at 12 minutes or so may be my favorite sub 15 minute match of all time. Awesome stuff and just a hair beside Misawa vs. Kobashi.- 15 replies

Voices of Wrestling - New Japan G1 Recaps

You are a machine watching these shows so quickly. Good stuff. -
Dusty had the Bull Drop Inn in 1991. Only seen the PN News segment from the 91 yearbook but it was some great wrestlecrap.
-
I probably didn't convey this well doing the show but I'm certainly pro to a heel Tully vs. face Arn and Flair or even heel Tully/Arn vs. face Flair if they had signed Tully before they did the angle where the Horseman turned on Sting. I was just spitballing thinking of possible options after Clash 10 aired with the Horseman turn and Sting injury.

I love the post WM 7 Primetime show with Koko showing Vince and Hennan how to do the bird.

This show was a blast. Great overview on Lugers career and I found myself shaking my head throughout the podcast.

The KING JERRY LAWLER. I didn't realize how young Maclin was when he first started out. I was never a big fan but he was 22-23 years olf in that 1992-94 stuff I have watched. Always seemed like a nice guy that at least loved being a part of the business.
-
I agree with your last paragraph and its why I enjoy watching the Rockers matches. They were willing to pinball vs. POP or Twin Towers, go technical with Arn/Tully to an extent, or work a fast paced junior style tag with the Orient Express. Great versatility sprinkled throughout their run.

[1997-01-21-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXXIV] Lex Luger vs Scott Hall
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Actually did look like good heavyweight style stuff. You knew Syxx and Nash were getting involved. Luger looks a little weird physique wise here. Numbers game catches up to Luger but the Steiners make the save and we have a decent finish to the clash.- 7 replies

I fully accept that the Bash is way better but this was loads of fun to and Benoit's bump into the heat unit in the bathroom and down the stairs was sick. You also get the greatness of Eaton separating them. This felt definitive and should have been the end of it. I also am usually immune to this but Woman and Benoit coming out int he beginning really creeped me out.

[1997-01-21-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXXIV] The Giant promo

I agree with the backdrop but I thought this was a shockingly good promo from Giant at this point in time. Enjoy how Hogan cant be bothered to be at this show.- 7 replies

[1997-01-21-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXXIV] Ultimo Dragon vs Dean Malenko
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Enjoy the RF Video sign along with the phone number. I also never understood why they did these shows 4 days before a PPV. This is my favorite Dave rating since the 1/94 6 man he went the full monty for that didn't' sniff my top 100. This match is fine but felt very exhibitionish and I couldn't connect to the story going on. Malenko worked over the legs a ton but nothing felt very consequential. After seeing Misawa still feel the consequences of his elbow 22 minutes after it got worked on, Ultimo came back from the leg work very easily. Malenko regains the title in the cloverleaf which at least did play off the limb work and and Ultimo has had a rough January.- 13 replies

Hogan does look amazing coming out here. He doesn't say much but the crowd is insanely electric. Before he is able to say a ton, the Giant runs out and we go to black right as him and Hogan are about to go at it. Two great Monday Night shows.

Crowd looks huge and they come unglued with Macho coming out and putting the chair in the middle of the ring. Savage wearing black and white is very suggestive. Savage says he has been blackballed and hes not leaving until he talks to someone that has major stroke. Chavo comes out looking about 12 years old and Macho points to the exit. Chavo declines and gets his ass beat. Maxx doesnt fare much better and the crowd is going nuts. Mickey Jay and Dillenger and even Alex Wright are the rest of the casualties. Sting descends and is able to whisper some things to Macho to convince him to leave with him through the crowd. This was awesome.

Action looked good and these guys could have some good chemistry when they just went out and crafted a good match. Vader looks like a threat here for probably the last time. show goes off the air with all four guys duking it out and the crowd going nuts.

[1997-01-20-WWF-Raw] Gorilla Monsoon, Steve Austin and Bret Hart
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Gorilla lays out the scenario of the Rumble and sets up Final Four. This build feels really like what we see now with Elimination Chamber being the bridge to Mania. "YOu call yourself a Gorilla, yet you yeehaw out here like a jackass" I may start a stone cold quote book. The pull apart between Austin and Bret is really heated. This was great stuff all around. -
This is when the WWF really felt like the 1997 WWF we all love and remember. Bret gives a great scalding promo where he brings up a lot of truth in what he says and really tows the line between sounding convicted and whiny at this point. This is of course the great I've been screwed promo and then he quits on the spot. Vince is dejected and pleads with him. Austin ranting and raving about the mic is great. he has a great rebuttal. "Ever since you came back, you aint down nothing but cry." Austin can't face Sid tonight because he has a concussion. Great start to the show.

[1997-01-20-AJW-Zenjo Perfection] Kyoko Inoue vs Takako Inoue
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Botched finish aside, this looked really good from the clips to. It was a relief to see both this and the previous match allow the spots to breathe a bit. For a joshi novice, what is the most "definitive" match for these two. Good to see these two matches in the rewatch/first time list for you Loss as the full matches may be errata candidates.- 14 replies
