One of the best examples I can think of off hand of All Japan having a tag match to lead into a Triple crown Singles Match. Doc looked like a beast here and established that Misawa beating him would be no easy task. Ace hung with people here and was good at picking his spots when necessary and staying out of the way otherwise. MIsawa after a kind of rocky start in the beginning of the year ( I don't think he was as bad as people say in the 3/5 tag, he just was not as good as usual Misawa) is starting to show some signiture performances.

Don't know why they kept insisting that Hogan had a 3 year layoff, and also don't know how I feel about Tony constantly saying this was the biggest match of all time. I wish he just would have said WCW history because that point I would agree with and the match and atmosphere for this felt big time. Match was worked so damn well. I agree with Loss that this is a Hogan style match, but it is the best possible case scenerio Hogan match with great cutoffs and actually smart interference from Sherri. I got of sense of Hogan being in real peril in the match instead of heat segment, big finishing move by heel, Hulk up, finish. Wonderfully done match that really feels like one of the unhearalded big time main events from the modern era. I would almost go as far to say that if Austin/Rock from Wrestlemania defines the Attitude style, this match defines Hogan's style of main event from 1984-1996.

Weird structure in the beginning. Austin trying to get himself DQ'd at the end would be nice if I felt he was in severe danger but Steamboat feels like more of a finese wrestler so as a result, the finish doesn't work too well for me. Good match but given the time and signiture spot they were given on this PPV , I was hoping for more.

Would Shawn Michaels Make Your Personal Top 100?
soup23 replied to Dylan Waco's topic in The Microscope
So of that list, I have 45 that I would safely put above Shawn with another 10 I could see real compelling arguments for. Glad this discussion came up because looking at the title I thought to myself that I don't really like Shawn but shit 100 guys is a lot of guys but then you start putting names down and I realized that he may break by top 100 but it wold be close and I don't seem him sniffing my top 75 at all. -

One guy that both you and Loss listed was Brain Pillman and that is someone that I can see arguing that Shawn was better than. As far as high end matches I only see the Windham/Pillman and Pillman/Badd comparing to Shawns top stuff and Shawn definitely has longevity in his corner too. -

I think his post-comeback run looks upon fondly because of the ranking of high end matches people have from that era. I don't know where you stand on the big matches of Shawn's post comeback run Dyaln but I have no problem saying the matches vs. HHH at Summerslam, the two Taker matches, the two Cena matches, and the Jericho WM match were all great matches. I can see more arguments against the Flair WM match but I am also a big fan of it. That is 7 matches post comeback that I would personally see placed in the top 100 WWF/WWE matches of all time. That is pretty good and looks better in retrospect that the week in week out subpar performances he gave. Shawn I think had really big highs post comeback. I am also not including the Angle/Shawn match which while I am sure will not have many defenders here would elsewhere. -
I am a bit confused about this whole game analogy and don't understand what more you wanted from Tony as far as calling the moves. He calls the moves accurately and gets the storyline over. One quick example that I can recall is his calling of the marquis of Queensbury. Jesse is the one going on and on about Pittman being incompetant as a judge because he is a marine. This is a funny bit the first time but after about the fourth comment, Tony says fuck you essentailly and results back to the action and then starts feeding Jesse specific quesitons about the match and the strategy being imposed by both Flair and Regal. That is all I can ask for in a PBP guy. I certainly don't think Tony is as good as Lance Russell or peak Ross, but I do think he was a very good announcer for a vast majority of his career and I am surprised to see you place him in the awful category along the likes of the AWA announcers and Bill Mercer.

Jerry, I will be able to see how bad Tony regressed in 1994 watching the yearbook, but I am up to the Bash at the Beach show and he is great on that show staying focused and adding a lot of prospective and insight knowing there may be first time viewers. Criticizing him for saying the official company tag line seems pretty extreme to me. I just feel like Tony has gotten a really bad rep over the years for 2 years of subpar work at the end of his career yet other announcers are shielded from that same criticism. People make comments like Bobby was disinterested in the product and got talked down by Tony as an excuse for why he was awful in those later years. The tag line seems to be that Tony was at base adequate and then awful. We have not seen much from Ross on 1994 yet and he was real good in the 123 Kid/Bret match but on a consistent basis, Tony has been the best announcer or host in 1994 in my opinion by a safe margin. Ventura constantly derailed matches and angles getting over his own agenda and left the play by play man dumbfounded. Hennan was not near as good a color man in 1994 in my opinion as Tony was PBP based on what we have seen so far on the yearbook.

Agreed, and maybe Tony got extremely more jaded as the years went on but look at 1994. A WCW rules , WWF sucks posters was displayed prominently for a few seconds on Slamboree and TOny just sort of chuckles and says "This is WCW" This seems like a much more natural response and is a long way from him stating “that will put asses in the seats” and spewing such venom on his own regard.

I enjoyed this a good bit. Funk did some great goofy selling and him pinning Buck was nice. I also thought the commentary did a good job in justifying why Arn was hardly in the match saying it was Dustin’s fight he was just there for back up. The turn was executed well and got a great reaction from the crowd.

Sasuke has shown repeatedly that he can mix in his gorgeous high spots and near falls into a great story match this year, so to see him do a more junior exhibition style match with Dragon here was real disappointing. The execution of the moves was done really well but I was just detached from the whole theme they were going for.
-
More of a spectacle than a good match but what it was trying to accomplish, it did a good job in creating some memorable scenes with the chair throwing and Funk being wrapped in barbed wire. Kind of amazing to see Terry do this type of match two days before the BATB.

Flair being with Sherri does not work at all and really takes away from his persona. I also hate the way she Whooos. Final sell job by Flair but he was not as convincing here as he has been.

The 24 inch pythons are back. Its preposterous to think Hogan testified against steroids and to see his own transformation from the Fujinami match till now. Decent promo but in some ways it feels like they didn’t do as much to hype this match as I recalled. We really didn’t have a huge incident after the contract signing besides Charlie chaplin Sherri and that was just stupid.

Sid is awesome here. Fake crying and looking real proud of himself when he gets his hand raised. Lance and Eddie Marlin both play there roles well to as can be expected. I am shockingly wanting to see Lawler/Sid real bad now.

I loved all of this. The clips from Midsouth looked awesome and heated. Tommy Rich gives a long time promo and I can actually buy the embarrassment he says Poole received and that is why he has been away so long. Sid as a monster in Memphis actually works too. Also refreshing to have Lance here as he adds a lot to this angle talking about Jerry’s pride getting the best of him and asking legitimate questions to Rich.

Recap does a good job in four minutes of filling in gaps of stuff we lost but the whole set up is stupid and I cant remember how Summerslam is presented with the fake Taker but going in, it looks like there is no way for Dibiase to not look like a complete idiot.

Santo sure is not hiding in the shadows in this match as I thought he looked like the best wrestler of the world here. Taking it to the mat with Panther, some beautiful transition moves being fluid as fuck, mixing in some brawling, and multiple gorgeous dives. This is my favorite trios match of the year as I think all the pairings exceeded my expectations and the match had a good flow to it. Rey/Psic was able to showcase their skills and Rey was so fast in the early stages of his career. Octo and Fuerza were the lesser people but were still able to have a good matchup and I thought particularly Octogan looked better than usual. Overall superb match.

These guys did not look like they liked each other and were not cooperating fully. Post match looked like a brawl might erupt. Seemed more heated and legit hatred than most stuff in UFC.
-
This got pretty grim over the course of twenty minutes. A brutal, intense fight that used the chain magnificently. Agree with Kevin that again this is another company that has had a significantly better and more violent brawl than what we have seen in ECW so far.
