Ah-ha. Childish. But also it does seem like the sort of thing that would legit piss him off.

I just finished the book yesterday, and that bit about the 78,000 stood out to me as well. I thought the book was terrific, especially all of the Andre bits.

Havoc 93 right now. Tony and Jesse are really awful on commentary for the show. The opening six man is a snooze fest, but the crowd wanted to cheer for shock master a little bit. But then you have Jessie talking shit about him the whole match, talking about how clumsy and uncoordinated he isn't always falling down and such. It's no wonder he never got a chance to recover from his terrible beginning, if that's the kind of treatment he was getting from the commentary each week. Wonderful/Steamboat is a decent match, but I was a little bit unclear on the storyline behind their feud. Apparently there was a Paula involved, but there's no explanation given by Tony and Jessie. Regal/Davey was terrific. Big shock there. Have a few matches to go, including Vader/Cactus and Flair/Rude. I have high hopes for both of those matches. One other point: Rick's tights are fantastic. On one leg is Flair with a black eye. Other leg is the yummy Fifi. Butt is a jack o lantern. Might be my favorite design from him that I have yet seen.

Right there with ya, buddy. I'll be 41 in December!

Subscriber here. I will sometimes go weeks without turning it on, but when I get in the mood to go on a wrestling binge I'm very glad to have it. Watching Halloween Havoc 1993 right now.

It is kind of a damned-if-you-do thing, isn't it? I know that when I finally get around to catching up on the 2012-13 PPVs, I won't likely be watching the RAWs and SDs with them. So I will find the recap vids helpful.

Brock gets up to throw Taker down a pit but slips and ends up counted out.

Listened to the Lawler eps on Austin's podcast. I really enjoyed the insights about the Kaufman feud, especially Jerry saying he hit Jim Carrey on "Letterman" much harder than he hit Kaufman on the Letterman show because he was legit pissed at Carrey. And also his asking Milos Foreman, "Has this guy [Carrey] even read the script? Doesn't he know that Andy and I were actually good friends?" I had never heard about the creation of Kamala gimmick - anyone have an image of the Frazetta painting he's talking about? Jerry makes him sound like a big sweet simpleton. "Mr. Lawler, why do you paint a banana on my stomach every night?"

The Jim Ross Is A Grouchy Hateful Vile Human Being thread

Yeah, I am not sure "Oriental" was a bad word in the 80's. But of course, suggesting they're all ugly (or goofy-looking) is very much a racist stereotype. -

Yup. That was the problem. We all claimed not to like his gimmick. But we the people kept buying tickets (in the form of tv ads). Who's to blame for his popularity, such as it was?

Agreed. Steph's expression is not the most flattering one she could do. But I like the photo.

Wait, the 80's cartoon? Because that would kick ass. I grew up on that shit. I've looked back at it on youtube, and it makes me crazy now because I know the voices the characters should be having. As a kid, I didn't know what those wrestlers actually sounded like. But I would still love it for the nostalgia value.

Basing this off W's 2013 matches collection?

A few of the insightful comments I wrote when DEAN posted this match on his favorites thread: You know it's really something when Sexy Star is the conservatively dressed one in a match. Valkyrie's boots and 2-toned hair rule. Mari sure has turned into her father -- all weeble-wobbly and round but still a total badass in the ring. Good stuff. Faby and Mari are always a treat. Also, AAA women's 6-man tags always feel like a cluster. This one seemed particularly such, with too much obvious cooperation between the opponents as they set up their spots. But the matches are always quick, and they have plenty of entertaining moments.

Hmm, well I guess it's a bit tamer when you tell it -- what with your facts, and stuff. ;-) Still, a bizarre story. Wrestlers really are a special breed. I think they even mention that Terry is the type who would be happy to share his insights on the business to respectful young workers who just want to learn. That's probably how Foley because BFFs with him, come to think of it.
-
Agreed. This one was superb. I can't get enough Sgt Slaughter talk. One of my favorite bits is when he and Patterson are reminiscing about the alley fight -- and how Patterson said, "We got 'em, Kid!" towards the end of the match.

Watching the Piper/Funk episode of the Roundtable yesterday. They're talking about Terry still working indies and the kids not trying to learn from him. Paraphrasing from memory: Dusty -- If I were on an indie card with Terry, I would be pulling him aside and picking his brain. Trying to learn everything I could. But they're too busy trying to think up their next flippy move. Hayes -- Flippy move? Ross -- What, like a hurricanrana? Dusty - Yeah, a hurricanrana. I never did one of those, to this day. They're just being crotchety old dudes complaining about the kids getting off their lawn. But it cracked me up. I love Dusty on these rountables. It also occurs to me that this episode may never get on the network, even though it was really good, because there's a bizarre vignette about them vaselining up their hands to shove something up the bare ass of a naked Flair they've talked into getting onto a table in all fours -- and a young Piper walks in, says hello, turns around, and walks out.

Your final comment was just what I was thinking: that with only one world title now, it should hopefully make the lower belts a little more important and allow a more proper push for people.

Adrian Street is freaking awesome, and he's clearly the influence for some of Goldust. But how on earth did he manage to not get his ass kicked every night in the parking lot, traveling around the notoriously homophobic redneck South?

I like the theory that with the rise of SD, they felt like they had time to work longer matches. It makes sense. Watch the 3-hour Nitros to see how hard it is to fill time with just stupid angles.

At least Miz was an exciting talent. He definitely fizzled when he went to the top. But I loved watching him get there. Del Rio has never remotely interested me. Yes, the Edge match may have buried his push. But damn, the guy is just a dull personality to me anyway. The only real complaint I have about his "failure" is that it may have reinforced the idea with management that new main eventers can't get over.

I dug the fact that the Backstabbers Countdown was totally kayfabed. I would disagree with the order of a few of the results. (Hogan joining The Outsiders needs to be #1 -- it's perhaps the most important moment in wrestling history. Okay, that's perhaps a strong statement. But it's more important than Marty and Shawn breaking up.
