  1. I would agree. Plus you don't fuck with the Brazilians. It's a rather dangerous place.
  2. Yet another great promo by Landell. Dutch is such a sleazeball, turning his coat as soon as Horner jumps into the ring. Man, Horner can show some fire at least, I'm surprised.
  3. Hey, Rugged Ronnie Garvin. He was only 41 then ? He could have had another run in WCW easily.
  4. Because it was a great gimmick and it suited Landell perfectly. Got a kick of him getting introduced as "The Real Nature Noy" in SMW.
  5. Money promo from Cornette here. This is what he means by "wrestling the way it used to be". Serious stuff there. Love it.
  6. That's an interesting remark. I agree Cena has "brand" tatooed on his forehead, whereas Hogan looked like he was bigger than wrestling itself. The fact he was a big star in AWA and New Japan before going to WWF probably helps.
  7. Flair was a second rate Buddy Rogers too. So... Landell is the lost worker of the 80-90's. If personnal issues and bad decision didn't fuck him up, he would be remembered as one of the greatest. I have that much faith just from the snippets of brillance you get from him everywhere he went.
  8. Hunter : "See, I told you, Brock isn't a draw, he failed miserably. I should go over him clean at Summer Slam."

You're not missing anything, that's it. Great spectacle. As far as pure work goes... not so great, but that really wasn't the point. It was meant to be an awesome spectacle, and it succeeded in that respect in more ways than I thought it would. Brock was a great heel, Cena did what he does best, which is sell. That's all there is to it really, but that's enough to make it a great wrestling moment to me. Maybe it doesn't hold up on rewatch though. Now that the excitement over Brock has, well, dropped dead, and knowing the retardation of the finish (and what followed) may hurt the perception of the match in retrospect. I dunno. It looked great when it happened.
  10. Landell is the lost worker of the 90's. Great promo, excellent worker. Sad.
  11. The end of the Quebecers, sadly. I didn't care for the HeadShrinkers as faces, I though Lou Albano made them look goofy. It's also the beginning of the tag title becoming less important than ever at this time. The Shrinkers had one title match against a makeshift tag team, then lost on a house-show to Shawn & Diesel, then it got vacated... This period really struck me at the time as the beginning of the end for the tag titles.
  12. Cool, a guy taking out trash. Seriously, the wave of terrible gimmicks during that time was pretty unique.
  13. Didn't Barry blew his knee early in the match ? I remember he was really out of shape then.
  14. Ah, fun stuff. I guess there's a heavy dose of tongue-in-cheek in this piece. Well, one could argue that the fascination for musclebound clean-shaven guys in crew cuts isn't that far remove from the fantaisies of Leni Riefenstahl.... Cena could be one of the greek statues-like athlete in Triumph of Will... (I know, it's silly)
  15. Not to mention they are unable to edit their stuff to make it seem at least somewhat clean looking (not as atrocious as at the beginning, but still). While interesting at points because Tajiri has a unique trajectory, and the point of view of a japanese wrestler is very interesting for cultural differences only, it looks like this shoot interview was done on the fly after a match, as Tajiri looks like he didn't even get to take a shower and get dressed. Really unprofessionnal all the way. Highspots are better in that the guy is more knowledgeable, but the production values are just as bad and they are worse in terms of dragging out at times (man, that Scotty Riggs interview...). Kayfabe Commentaries blows everyone in term of production, it's not perfect but at least looks professionnal most of the time. They do some really cheap stuff too though (those best/worst angle stuff with a WTF panel including Chyna, Danny Doring next to guys like JJ Dillon, Animal, Bill Eadie, Sunny, Maria Kanelis, Billy Gunn, Bill Apter).
  16. Yep. Kinda negates the dancers too. Can't have the sexyness and the "family kiddie entertainement" at the same time. Art Barr ?
  17. BTW, I never wrote that Show's fat punch looked *bad*. I only said that considering it's a signature finisher spot, it doesn't look very good, that it didn't work for me and that Show isn't exactly throwing a punch like Bobby Eaton. It looks okay I guess, which is not enough to make me believe it's a lethal finisher.
  18. WTF was Lane thinking ? Good promo, as always.
  19. 0-43. Poor Barry, he deserved a better break. Anyway, funny stuff.
  20. DWB beating on anyone is fine, but Lee is just bland and an okay worker at very best. The ebst part is Rip Rogers reaction to getting the money, and the Orndorff beatdown at the end.
  21. Well, I did say "blame me for not being a regular watcher" then added than "as a casual viewer, this didn't look good to me, and knowing that it's a signature spot doesn't change the fact it didn't look good to me anyway". If some have trouble understanding, I can't spell it to them better than this. What's hard to understand there, really ? Jeez... Plus it's really a point of detail, it's not like I'm focusing on the punch, the entire segment was awful.
  22. Nevermind...
  23. Like in "not having watch any WWE show in context save for WM and very few occasionnal matches (Punk vs Cena) or RAW in the last 8 years ?" ? Yeah, that's me. I've watched more WWE in context since this year's WM than I have since 1999, and quite frankly I wasn't aware of the fat punch being the ultimate lethal weapon in WWE. Doesn't look great. Not a fan of the killing punch unless you're called Aja Kong and you're twisting the back of your fist blindly into someone's nose.
  24. Brodus Clay is interesting. In my opinion, he is awful, but I have seen the argument that without the dancing gimmick (which I condemned from the get-go) he would have been dead in the water. The gimmick at least makes him memorable. I'm sure it could be a thread all by itself, not just about Brodus, but how a gimmick that is bad can still be better than just being another nameless face in a crowd. Not really a derivative gimmick, which I know we have a topic for (although it is that too). Well, actually it's a pretty derivative gimmick : Flash Funk + Rikishi. Of course both were excellent workers, and Rikishi got over like crazy doing the fat guy dancing routine. But yeah, without the gimmick, Broadus is nothing, as he doesn't seem very good in the ring from the matches I have seen, yet I was interested in watching his PPV match whereas I just ff through half of the card. Agreed. And the act won't get over like Rikishi because what makes the gimmick is everything *around* Broadus Clay, and not the guy himslef. Rikishi made it work, and it could deliver in spades in the ring too. Broadus can't talk, can't work well, doesn't exactly exhudes charisma once the disco ball and the two fine pieces of ass go away so... A good exemple of a guy been given a rather bad (or at least very short on fuel) gimmick and making the aboslute most of it, and more, is Disco Inferno. Again, the guy could work, so that helps a lot, but Disco Inferno looked like a short-lived low-card gimmick, and it's pretty amazing how much the guy got out of it.
  25. No you miss the point. You commented on something not knowing the context. So no its not a stupid statement. Yes it is, because after you pointed to me the fact that the fat punch is actually Big Show's signature finisher, I admited not realizing it and re-phrased my opinion from the point of view of a very casual viewer, which was that it didn't look very good anyway, signature spot or not. Really, Cena had no damage done to him at all during the match, and the fat punch was enough to kill him so John Laurinaitis could get the pin, when 15 minutes of Brock killing Cena was not enough to knock him out for the count. So signature spot or not, it just didn't work for me.
