The initial run just coincided with the pop culture norms in the late 90s. That was the period of the return of the teenage raunchy comedies and Jerry Springer was at his peak of popularity. I was a freshman in college during the initial run and was a big fan. In retrospect it probably had to do with Shawn being heel more than anything. It was such a great run for him after his babyface push flopped for the most part. As an aside I recently realized that come this fall it will be 20 years since I started following wrestling online. yeah I remember after all the neck injuries at the beginning part of last decade they really toned down the style. I can remember an Edge/Orton PPV match in Spring 2004 getting a lot of praise for simple yet effective work. I think there was an Orton/RVD match in late 2003 that got the same accolade
