I like the idea of weight divisions personally. It worked great for British promotions and it's a better way to have multiple champions instead of declaring champions for each WWE show. Plus, it could lead to catchweight matches between champions and should theoretically lead to lighter and more talented guys on the roster.

Russo tried, but you just can't kill TNA. -
So guys like Meng, the Giant, etc?

[1995-05-03-NJPW-Wrestling Dontaku] Shinya Hashimoto vs Keiji Muto
rzombie1988 replied to Loss's topic in May 1995
Can anyone explain this match to me? I just watched this and thought it was a total turd. The heat was good but nothing happened in the first 10 minutes, Mutoh hit a bunch of offense and then some shenanigans happened during the pin. -
No one would have known any of them though. It worked in Japan because shoot stuff was popular there. Only the top boxers would have worked, but Evander Holyfield wasn't going to be taking a jackhammer. WCW had Goldberg go through WCW's tough guys instead like Meng, Giant, etc., and it worked well. You introduce them first, just like you do anyone else who's trying to be pushed. I'm surprised that I'm really having to explain that wrestlers have to be introduced to an audience before people know who they are. It's funny that you mention Meng, because his tough guy rep is not known to a vast majority of fans. But why put all that effort, money and time into a guy who is going to get squashed, won't be known and won't appear again? I wasn't wise to wrestling until around 2001 or so but as a mark I could tell you that Meng was probably the #1 person I wouldn't try my luck with. The Giant might have chokeslammed me but Meng was going to rip my throat out. The announcers really pushed him as a bad mofo as well.

IWA-Puerto Rico 2000 - Ricky Banderas (El Mesias from AAA) vs Slash Venom - Part 1 is here: This is an absolute must just for the bump Slash took off the bleachers to the floor. He missed the table and went splat from 15 feet up. Great heat and I remember enjoying the match.

WOW - Beckie the Farmer's Daughter vs The Disciplinarian I rated this *** and know you guys always like some different stuff. I'd totally recommend this as it was rather fun. Not like WOW has a chance to get on the set otherwise. WOW - Randi Rah Rah vs Lana Star Not as good, but it was a fun revenge match with Randi after Lana for putting her eye in a eye patch. WOW - Jungle Grrrl vs Jane Blond Lots of good highflying here from Jungle Grrrl. WOW Unleashed PPV - Becki the Farmer's Daughter vs Jungle Grrrl I remember enjoying this one as both are decent flyers and Jungle Grrrl did a really cool splash off super high ladder.

We all like what we like but I really think you need to rewatch it more than any other match, especially since you said it was awesome. I don't think I've ever seen anyone have a bad review of it and I've seen it been given 5 stars so many times. What didn't stand out about it? The selling was great, the heat was off the charts, the storyline was good, the stiffness was good and overall as a wrestling match, it had just about everything. I don't see any flaws in it. Alot of people including myself call it the best under 15 minute match ever and I've seen. It's definitely my MOTY for 1996 and one of my top 15 all-time best matches.
-
Takada vs Hashimoto - My 1996 MOTY and a 5-star classic. Some people really love the Ogawa/Hashimoto matches and I always see Hashimoto vs Tenryu and Hashimoto vs Yamazaki being pimped.
-
I always get the Masaki Sata vibe from him, although he is more or less something from my worst nightmares.
-
Dreamslam was great as well which is why I lumped DS 1, 2 and Big Egg together. DS 1 had the all-time classic Kandori/Hokuto match and 2 had the classic Toyota/Yamada vs Oz/Kansai match. I'd also lump DreamRush into there as well as the main is possibly my favorite match ever and Aja/Bull was awesome. Big Egg had the 5-star Aja vs Toyota match, the awesome Kandori/Yamada tag, the awesome legends match, a good opener, the good LCO/Kurenai and Nagashima tag, Hotta getting a great one out of Toyoda, Hokuto dropping Sawai on her head in a great one plus Inoue and Kansai having one of the top matches of the night and more!

I reviewed Wrestle Kingdom 7 with pics, gifs and even a few japanese quotes here: Part 1- http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2013/01/nj...m-7-review.html Part 2- http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2013/01/nj...t-2-review.html Overall thoughts: Good show but certainly not the greatest show ever and really not even NJPW's best iPPV. I don't even think it was my favorite Tokyo Dome show ever. There was a ton of decent to good matches here with the main event being the match of the night but there were also questionable booking decisions that harmed the show. Coming out of this, I don't see alot of intriguing matches for NJPW due to the Shibata/Okada losses. Have them win and I could come up with multiple interesting and fresh scenarios. If you like good wrestling, there is lots of it here and you won't be disappointed. Some shots from the show:
-
I sat through it without any problems. But I can totally understand it if you don't have 7-10 free hours straight. The matches on the show are so different from each other that its like watching multiple shows anyway. You can easily split the tape before the tournament and both would still be top level shows. The legends match is the best ten minute draw I've ever seen.
-
Have you ever watched the show? The show isn't 10 hours once you take out the welcome parties which eat up atleast an hour. If you take out the non wrestling stuff that knocks off atleast another hour. If you also go straight to matches without the interviews or entrances that's another hour off.
-
I'm about halfway through it and I have some serious ranting to do on Shibata and Okada losing. The Shibata match depressed me.
-
Dreamslam 1, 2 or Big Egg. Big Egg had 10 matches over ***+. Nothing is ever going to even come close. There is nothing to even question about it. Comparing WCW, WWF and ROH shows to it is blasphemous. End of thread.
-
It's true. I think I heard them say it at a J-Cup once.
-
Your way seems the most logical to be honest. My friends and I will just choose who will win, maybe #1 and #30 and who will last the longest.
-
You could have him do dark matches. Then the crowd is happy and he is still treated as a special attraction. I'd have kept his streak going until the fans got tired of it and then I would have had him lose to another up and comer to get that person over. DDP is commonly seen as the best possible choice for that. The thing with Goldberg matches is that they were pretty entertaining for the most part. I'd certainly put him in my top 10 of squashers. He looked like a beast and it was usually pretty quick.
-
Oh yeah. Lex had terrible booking back to his NWA days. They turned him and had him lose so many big ones, but he still was over.
-
They did Hashimoto vs Kawada. It was good but it was in 2004 and nowhere near what it could have been. Hashimoto vs Misawa would have worked if Hashimoto played Kobashi only with kicks and took the underdog role. Misawa dominates, Hash sells then makes the big comeback. Hashimoto vs Kobashi would have been interesting. It would have been fiery and probably pretty good. Probably better if it was under 20 minutes though. Hashimoto vs Hansen strikes me as possibly being alot of fun. Hashimoto vs Akiyama or Taue probably wouldn't have been that interesting. But I didn't like Akiyama until NOAH and I prefer Taue as a tag wrestler until he got into NOAH. I guess with Taue you would go with the storyline of "Can he hit the chokeslam?". Hashimoto vs Jumbo would have been really good. Hashimoto vs Doc probably happened and would have been good.
-
Yep, but I think he's below those three and the highly pimped Hash matches don't compare for me minus the Takada match.
