I think with Styles, it was just this, "Hey! He actually knows the names of moves and drops little smarky comments sometimes!" It was a novelty at the time, and it just wore off. All you were left with was a shitty play-by-play guy.

Are psychology, "logic" and storytelling within a match overrated?

I can't speak to soccer (yeah, I called it soccer!), but this happens quite often in American football. Some teams take on the characteristics of their city and stay that way. No matter who the players or the coaching staff for the Pittsburgh Steelers, they're always a working-class, hard-nosed team. Philly's sort of the same way. Chicago, too. -
Both hail from a mountain range?

They should be referred to as "Wimpies".

I kinda think Tully is to heels what Steamboat is to faces. You just can't imagine him as a good guy.

Who from the 70s and 80 would have got world title runs ...

Davey Boy would've been a yes in 96 during the Michaels' feud. Hell, probably in 95 when he feuded with Bret. -
With the exception of the very top guys (Cena, Orton, etc.) aren't pretty much everyone JTTS's nowadays?
-
What was the site that had Yokozuna joining the Hart Foundation every week for like all of 97? That rumored arrival went on for a while.

I will never un-see that now.

I just wonder how many kids in attendance at Raw had their Muppet kayfabe ruined last night. They had to have seen the puppeteers coming out and getting behind the barriers with the severed torsos of their favorite characters. Very sad.

Did any of that Buddy in WWF headlining run happen during the 80's? And if so, will it make the 80's WWF set re-do?

I recently watched the Flair/Scott Steiner match from one of the Clashes. The match starts getting close to the time limit. The announcer is calling "one minute!", "30 seconds!", etc. Steiner is in control, hitting some big moves on Flair. Instead of going for a cover, he keeps playing to the crowd. Pumping his arms in the air, stuff like that. He had his chance at the title, but was too stupid to go for a pin.

I prefer to see it as plenty of wrestling, but too little time. I'm kind of stuck on the AJ set too. I'm in that 87 down period, so I'm powering through to get to the fun 88-89 stuff. Also, Dylan has me super stoked for the AWA set with all his Blackwell talk. After that, I can't wait for Portland to see all the awesome Buddy Rose stuff. After that, I am really excited to see what's out there for a Lucha set. Then there's still a Crockett set down the line which should be a monster. Somewhere in there, I need to get GH's 2010 MOTYC set. I like to keep up on current stuff here and there, and find these comps the easiest way to do so...I'm just usually a year behind everyone else. I have a lot of wrestling around the house, but not nearly as much as some of you guys. I still want more. I just need time to watch the stuff.

Was it really 'hotter' than say '98-01? It may be comparing apples to oranges, but the insane amount of people watching 2 companies during that boom and the WWF shattering thier own attendance records across the country is something we'll probably never see again. I honestly don't know. It just seems that there's been a lot of discussion around here lately of numbers for various HOF pushes, and they always seems to show good attendance regardless of the territory (for that time period). I was watching Memphis Heat a couple of nights ago, and it kind of got me thinking about how it seemed like everywhere was hot from about 75-77 to 84-85 or so. There may have been a greater number of total people watching wrestling in 98-01, but it seems like people in every area were going to shows in the late 70s-early 80s. Also, I love the idea of a single 70's yearbook. I loved the Memphis 80's set, but it left me wanting to dig back into the 70's. That's just an under-represented time for wrestling fans. It'd be cool to get some people talking about it.

The time period of 77-84 came up recently. Could this be considered the hottest period for U.S. wrestling ever? It seems like pretty much every territory was drawing well during this time frame. I know we have the 80's sets, but a yearbook-style comp of 77-84 would kick ass.

I especially liked how, during the Sheamus match, Cole talked about how "Great White" was trending. I don't know if he was being tongue-in-cheek or what, but I'd guess that was more because of the shark attack over the weekend.

What's this in reference to?

I've read this like 100 times and still can't make out what he's saying. Is it basically, "Kanyon should have known better than to be gay and work for WWE?"
-
Well, it was an accident. The whole "Taker's Crew" thing is talked about in detail in the Godwinns' shoot interview, now that I think of it, as they were part of it. The Godwinns too!?!?! They could've made the Cliq their bitches. I don't understand this. What kept that from happening?
-
God, that group could've squashed the Clique. Who'd wanna fuck with them?

Dubble post...oops.

The thing that hit me at the end of this show was how boring it all was. The announcers are going on and on about how crazy and exciting this shit is, and I'm just bored by it. This whole thing should've been exciting and interesting. Tons of guys walking out. The show in limbo. How can they make it work? Instead, it was so dull I wondered why I bothered watching. I recently watched the WCW Nitro dvd. For all the issues with that promotion, they really made the early NWO stuff seem chaotic. They didn't have a camera that just happened to be filming something happening. They would get word of something happening, and send a camera back to shoot it. Little stuff like that. That's what WWE should have at least been trying to do. Make things chaotic. What will happen? Hell, we didn't even see the dudes outside until Ace let them back in.

I don't know...I've kind of always seen "What's Opera Doc?" as too much of a self-conscious epic.

Using this criteria, could a case be made for Danny Davis? At OVW, he trained what will probably end up being quite a few hall-of-famers (Cena, Orton, Batista?, Lesnar?).
