When did Davis come back off the cliff? I don't remember that.
-
Man, let's wait until ResidentEvil's inevitable return before we go back to taking potshots at his shitty wrestling aesthetic. Let's instead nominate Bryan Alvarez for the Journalist's Wing of the PWO Hall. Alright. Can I ironically nominate Mark Henry since there is no way anyone could seriously think he's good?
-
Who's he talking about here?
-
I'd like to nominate Davey Richards as the first inductee of the Pro Wrestling Only Hall of Fame.
-
Has it ever been relevant? I mean, I have some friends that are pretty big wrestling fans. They have followed it since the 80's. They keep up with stuff online. Not as much as the people who frequent this board, but they're pretty up on stuff. They may have heard of Meltzer, but I'd seriously doubt they even know he has a hall of fame. I'm just saying that even within wrestling fans, it's a pretty small segment that even know it exists.

I'd be willing to bet there are a lot of sports journalists who would praise say, Roberto Clemente, without having seen him play at all. Same with any number of "classic" players. They'd be basing it on reputation and what they've heard/read from others. I'm not necessarily saying that's right. I just would venture to say it happens a lot.

From Mitch Ryder's facebook: New Albany is basically north Louisville. Might have to catch the show on the 23rd.

That is the funniest thing I've read all day. Pretty much a perfect summary of all things TNA right there.
-
I think TNA has this idea that these mainstream "celebrities" will get some random viewers to tune in. They might, but the problem is that it's doubtful that any of them will continue to tune in. It's like when Hogan came in and they put up a decent number (didn't they?) for his debut, but then pretty much went back to normal.

I pretty much watch all WWE programming on DVR. It's become almost Pavlovian in that I'll reach for the remote to fast-forward through the commercials when a guy is thrown to the floor.
-
I thought the difference last night was that Bryan looked really good in his match. Usually they're more of a fan of humiliating guys in their hometown.
-
What's the status on this set? I'm intrigued as '96 was the year I got back into wrestling. I'd stopped watching pretty much in 91 or so, and got back into it at the beginning of 96, just in time to be up to speed for the big stuff that happened that year.

Same here. I don't even know why I hate that guy. There were probably dozens of others on the roster who were worse workers. But something about him made me instantly not want to watch his match, no matter who his opponent was. Konnan was a pretty big one too. I've rarely seen a shittier wrestler who was more over than him during the Wolfpack period. Entire arenas were going fucking crazy for this guy, and he could barely string together the simplest spots without botching half of them and then getting so blown up that he looked like he was having a heart attack. And that's on top of some of the most aggravating promos in the whole company, TOSS MY SALAD LOLLOLLOL. Sid, on the other hand... I don't even know why I liked that guy, but I always did. He was maddeningly inconsistent; sometimes he'd have a perfectly decent match with a mediocre opponent, but other times he looked like the worst muscle-bound stiff to ever walk the aisle. I once got to commentate a Sid match live, and oh dear fucking lord it was terrible (though admittedly a lot of that was due to his opponent, a nearly immobile Bobby Eaton). But somehow, I always kept marking for Sid. Even if last week he and a Harris brother had gone out there and had the worst goddamn match I'd ever seen, this week I still grinned slightly when his music hit. It wasn't even for ironic "let's see how bad he is THIS time" reasons, there was just some intangible about him which made me like him. I think Sid may be one of the best examples of charisma in wrestling. I mean, other than Hogan, has anyone ever gotten by on it to a bigger level? Warrior, I guess. Other than that, I don't know.

The fans do seem to go nuts whenever he gives someone (Young, Tarver) an absolute mauling though, which is something I never remember him doing much in years past. I was very surprised at how nuts the crowd went during the Tarver/Cena tag match. Even for little things like when Cena would short-arm the tag. Then they really got into the beatdown after the match. I think it shows that that's the Cena they want to see. That original character from when he first turned face. More "Stone Cold-ish" I guess.

What's the deal with WWE promoting Mick Foley's new book? Doesn't he still work for TNA?
-
Explain please.
-
I don't agree with that. It's pro wrestling. Faking is the whole idea.
-
Didn't they just set up Edge/Swagger on Friday. No wonder no one gives a crap. Also, both guys are pretty much heat vacuums.
-
Who did Daniel tap in the 3-way? Just curious if he beat Miz again.

Your posts and attitude towards everyone is typical bully pick on others to feel good about yourself garbage. I like Mantell. I'm mostly familiar with him through his WCW and WWF work though and not Memphis. See, the thing with Richards is this. You can't fake intensity in life. You can't fake heart, you can't fake drive and you can't fake passion. Wrestling is full of people like this because it's a tremendously hard profession not only to just make it but to thrive in. Wrestling is home to some of the strongest willed achievers you will ever find on this planet. I am great at spotting people who have IT in the department. In other words, the eye of the tiger. Love him or not, Richards is among the elite of the elite in this department. You also see it in his other pursuits in life such as being a paramedic. So when he tries so hard to pump himself up, it is a natural (and proven) technique and extension of who he is as a person. Scott Steiner would do it after a tilt a whirl slam. For people who realise what passion and intensity truly is, they know it is guys like Kobashi, KENTA or Davey Richards. It is realistic for guys like them to be able to do what they can. It also makes it realistic and more believable that he can survive and go 100 percent like he does. On a physical scale, almost nobody could duplicate his physical ability in the ring. So that's what makes Richards realistic. See, to me, Richards looks like he's a guy playing a guy who's intense (if that makes sense). It doesn't seem that natural coming from him. I hate this term, but it's like he's trying to hard to be that intense wrestler guy. You know how there's always a guy on the news that's supposed to be the "funny guy". That guy is never funny. He's always trying to be funny, so it's forced and unnatural. That's how I see Richards (but replacing funny with intense).

with Undertaker "getting his powers back" this was pretty much a necessity to sell the angle. It just shouldn't have been Punk. Although I did like his bug eyed selling of Taker's strength It was sad to see him reduced to that role with not even a full entrance. He will be teaming with Italian Stallion next week at this stage. Hopefully he is just between feuds and not in the doghouse (sup Bryan & Dave auto response). This may be giving the writers too much credit, but didn't Punk kind of take advantage of the weakened Undertaker a couple of weeks ago? That may explain why he was the one to get beat this week.

Yeah, I would think that McCool's recent marriage pretty much makes her unfuckwithable.

Memphis wrestling is dead and judging by the recent OVW figures, so is Louisville. I've been to about a dozen FCW house shows and they always tape them with a hard camera by where Dr. Tom Prichard sits. To be fair, OVW's draw was always the idea that you could come see tomorrow's stars before they got called up. Now it's just a bunch of rejects and no-names. Mitch Ryder's XCW Midwest drew fairly well for a promotion it's size. They may still, but I haven't been to a show for a while. I wouldn't totally say that people in the Louisville area aren't interested in wrestling anymore.

I don't really want in on this argument, but Phil's tapes full of random wrestling are what got me into a lot of said random wrestling. Those were coming out over a decade ago. He's not some dude who just showed up to the table. The DVDVR's that he and Dean (and others) were putting together in the mid-late 90's are what got me to go out and see some stuff I might not have otherwise watched. Also, just as an aside. I find Phil (and Dylan and the rest of the segunda guys) to really be some of the more positive reviewers around. I mean, they pretty much stick to what they like and don't muddle up things by reviewing a bunch of stuff they know is not their taste (except SLL's attempt at the G-1).

I think this comes from their attempt to not be a wrestling show anymore, but more "episodic television" as they like to call it. How many shows have two characters with the same first name? Oh, besides Pete and Pete.
