Lawler and Co. obviously only care about themselves, and not the health of others.
-
That is amazing promotion right there! Any idea who Lawler, Dundee, Valiant, and Jarrett were facing?
-
It's like it's 2004 in Europe. Except the annoying chanting thing came sooner.
-
Is this the first time the same two dudes have won MOTY back-to-back years?
-
I usually get annoyed when, at the end of the year, the various "best albums" lists come out, and people bitch about the selections. You know Pitchfork is going to skew a certain way, that Rolling Stone will, that Spin will, that The Pazz and Jop poll will, etc. Who gives a shit? It's each publication's audience/writers, and you really shouldn't be too surprised. That said...this sucks. Dragon Gate is the best pro-wrestling promotion in the world? Alright-y.

I caught a little of it. I'll probably start watching. I loved "La Infestacion" and that there's a hillbilly wrestler.
-
I don't know what you'd call it, maybe ROH style indy matches. You know, the big, epic, 2.9 stuff with a million killer moves. I lost interest in that a couple of years ago. I seriously think that it coincided a bit with the Benoit stuff. I just came to appreciate a more "old-school" style. Something a little less dangerous. I guess the dvdvr 80's sets have influenced it, too. I can still get into a match that's a spectacle, but I just like stuff that's more smartly worked.

The funny thing about the whole mystery GM thing is that it's really what has helped make Michael Cole the biggest heel in the company.
-
He may have never been world champion, but he has given a bunch of douche-bags a symbol for their hatred of certain wrestling message boards. You can't put a monetary value on that.
-
If I'd have had a dvr in the 90's, there's no doubt that I would've watched both promotions every week. I do have a dvr now, and I don't watch TNA. People's viewing habits have nothing to do with TNA's numbers. That is, unless you count not watching shitty shows as a viewing habit.

I'm convinced that all the fat girl angles they've done in the last few years (Piggie James, the Vicki stuff) is not actually a rib on the women who are taunted. It's a shot at the Hardys and their fanbase.

Forgotten Good Workers/"Hey I Thought This Guy Was Supposed To Suck?"

Maybe I prefer head-licking spots to a good, bloody brawl Growing up mainly watching WWF stuff for a while, it's interesting to think of all the guys who were really great in some territory, and then totally sucked in the WWF. Butch Reed, The Bushwhackers...I'm sure there's more that I can't think of right now. -

So, I've seen plenty of great Sheephearders matches, but did they ever do anything even remotely good as The Bushwhackers? -
I always thought that one of the nice touches of the NWO angle, was Bobby being all "I've been trying to tell you people for years!" about Hogan.

I think OMG is considered to be a pretty great big man now. He's benefited a lot from the dvdvr 80's sets. He had some awesome performances in the Mid South and Texas sets. I don't think he ever reached the level of "he sucks", but Paul Orndorff is underrated in my book. The guy was solid in the ring, and had one of the best programs with Hogan ever. Is he a WON hall of famer? -
Indiana man sues WWE. So, the dude got hurt at Judgement Day 2000 when he was 7. The article doesn't really get into why he's just now filed the lawsuit. I'm kind of surprised that we don't hear about more of this type of thing. I mean, some of those dives you see in some indies, and the around the arena brawls, seem like lawsuits waiting to happen. Maybe if this guy is successful, there'll be more.

All these years, and I never realized he was supposed to look like an awards statue. Huh. I think Dustin has to be up there in the all-time "bi-polar" wrestlers. The dude can be absolutely amazing, and he can go to abysmal. It seems to coincide with him being in WWE or a floundering promotion like late-period WCW or TNA.

I don't think this board is overly negative. I think this place has the best discussion anywhere on pro wrestling. Stuff like the Observer recaps and the Vince vs. the World threads are extremely informative. I think this place has a very good ratio of interesting discussion to bullshit. I get why you made the changes, and they're good, but I honestly didn't see anything wrong here.

I haven't kept up with Lucha this year. Why are all you guys voting LA Park for the Flair/Thesz deal?
-
Very true. Especially the heels. I think the Miz gets some genuine heat, and Cole, but not many others. I was watching some World Class today, and was thinking about this. World Class had a whole roster of heels who could irritate the crap out of the crowd, but were also extremely giving to the faces. Steve Regal and Jack Victory make themsleves look like total asses to put the Fantastics over. The Midnight Express would also stooge like muthafuckas. Buddy Roberts may be the most unselfish wrestler ever. I mean, they had the Von Erichs who were as over as anyone ever, but the heels in that promotion helped a lot. I just don't think you see that kind of generosity from heels today. Everyone wants to be that cool heel or tough heel or whatever.

It's kind of interesting to look at how many work for TNA now... Jeff Hardy Jeff Jarrett Hulk Hogan Kevin Nash Kurt Angle Mick Foley Rick Flair Sting And you have to think Matt Hardy will debut soon. Also, if you count ECW in the boom, you've got D-von Bubba Ray Tommy Dreamer RVD Stevie Richards Taz (though he's not active) Even if you don't count Taz and Hogan as active, there's still a couple more than in WWE. Someone brought up a good point around here a while ago. Look how much the WWF changed from 1990 to 1997. Hell, even from 95 to 97. It was a totally different promotion. Look how little it's changed from say 2002 to now. This has been the longest period that there really hasn't been a shake-up of any kind in the modern era (80's til now).

I do think his organizational skills were a factor in his winning. Watching a lot of World Class lately, and I'm always amazed at that one older guy that is the ring announcer at times (not Mercer, the dude who actually introduces the wrestlers). He seems to not be clear on who the wrestlers are at times or what the stipulations are on matches. Even little things like constantly announcing the Von Erichs as "The FABULOUS Von Erichs". Their opponents are widely known as The Fabulous Freebirds. Why would you insist on using Fabulous on the Von Erichs? I know it's nit-picky, but it's little stuff like that that Vince would've corrected. To the average Joe just getting into wrestling, Vince's product comes across as more polished and "big time" than his competitors. As a kid, that's the way I saw it. Vince's show was more colorful, with cooler-looking guys and better graphics, etc. As I got older, I appreciated Crockett's and other's presentation as it was closer to gritty sport or something. I just don't think you can underestimate how all this stuff and things like having announced cards ahead of time really made the WWF seem more "legit" as a business to fans at the time.

I'd say if it was done intentionally or recklessly, it would warrant firing. Those cameras are muy expensive. You've never been in a business where making, retaining, and satisfying stars is important, I take it. Actually, I am currently in that type of business. Television news needs recognizable faces as anchors and reporters to draw in viewers. I've repeatedly seen very well-known personalities get let go due to financial reasons (which is basically why Steen was let go, when you get down to it). ROH has lost Joe, Punk, Danielson, Styles, London, etc. since it's beginning and they've kept going. I can't say if they're more or less successful in terms of eyes on their product or money. I'd imagine that if Steen did something to piss off HDNet, who's television time is important to ROH, they would have no problem letting him go. While he may be entertaining, it's not like he's not replaceable.
