Come on it's a Roast! That isn't a stupid thing to write. I've never been to a roast, but if it is making fun of things like people's diseases then I wouldn't find it funny either. It is a stupid thing to write. If you were invited to a roast, wouldn't you (I dunno) find out how a roast worked before hand?
-
No, no it wouldn't unfortunately (in my experience). Believe me, I've called back to my station from many, many crime scenes/auto accidents/etc, told them no one died, and got a disappointed, "Really? That's too bad." It's gotta be big, big like the "Miracle on the Hudson" deal to warrent news coverage.

Once Goldberg had the title he didn't need the undefeated streak too. They had him loose the undefeated streak and the title at the same time which left him with nothing. [ Sorry, I guess I meant what was the storyline with Flair/Valentine vs. Snuka/Shiek?

Curious. What is this formula?

Jamie Walters was a singer guy who had a role on 90210 where he was abusive to Tori Spelling's character, Donna. Here's a quote from him via his Wiki: On his Beverly Hills, 90210 role as Ray Pruit: "At first he was like this sort of like the underdog he was this guy from the wrong side of the town, who didn't fit in with the Beverly Hills kids but he had his music and he was honest and all this stuff. And then they started twisting him into being like this abusive evil boyfriend. I was like you either have to change the character or you have to let me off the show, because I'm going out and I'm like trying to sell tickets on our tour, and there's like teenage girls out there who think, like they really think I'm an abusive guy you know, and they'd hold up signs saying like 'leave Donna alone' and that's like so not what I wanted". - 1999[8]

You know, before the Memphis set, there was a lot of Lawler pimping going on much like the Fujiwara stuff now. I kinda thought, eh, don't see what's so great about Lawler. Then my ballot had him in like my top 8 or 9 matches. The beauty of these sets is the re-evaluation that goes on regarding "best ever" talk.

Flair to wrestle for Hulkamania promotion
Log replied to Boondocks Kernoodle's topic in Megathread archive
No. Not at all. Sarcasm or not. Anyways it appears joining Hogan & Flair on the tour will be Brutus Beefcake, The Nasty Boys, Ken Anderson, Val Venis, Umaga and The Godfather. Sure it is! G'day mate! Throw another shrimp on the barbi!!! -
I think Goodhelmet has a pretty extensive Murdoch comp available.

Odd question...if you're a jobber that gets a shot on WWE TV, and you get injured, are you protected in any way (like financially)? Are you just shit-outta-luck? The dudes that have been getting destroyed by Koslov and Ezekial made me wonder this.
-
Oh, and I never new Victor Quionnes used to ref for WWF...interesting.
-
Yeah, I dug this more than the more-pimped Dynamite stuff. Those Kid matches are great exhibitions, but this was a really nice match. Both guys are great, young athletes, but Tiger Mask just has that extra something to put him over Gilbert in the end. Also, it was great how Gorilla really put these guys over on commentary. He seemed to legit enjoy watching this match.

This was nice. I've only seen Uncle Ivan post-prime really, so he was a revelation for me here. As Loss said, they really work the holds well, and build to something for the crowd. I didn't take part in the WWF 80's poll, so I haven't seen a lot of Backlund either. He was goofy as all hell, but still sucked me into the match. Good stuff, and it's almost sad to hear Vince get all excited about the wrestling they were doing. What happened to that guy?

DVD #4: Adrian Adonis & Dick Murdoch vs Tatsumi Fujinami & Kengo Kimura
Log replied to Loss's topic in DVD Discussion
I read this stuff before watching the match. As I was watching, I was thinking, "it's not as bad as they say." It seemed like Kimura and Fujinami were getting some revenge spots, some offense. But by the end, I have to agree with Childs. This was too one-sided. Oh, and was this in Hawaii? I'm guessing it was, given the English-speaking announcer. -

I more curious as to how ZZ Top will be on the mic. -
I've always wondered if Japanese commentators were really good, or what. Not speaking the language and all, I can't tell. Which promotion would you say has the best commentators in Japan?

Some of us appreciate the days of the singular announcer. In today's sports announcing field (with thepossible exception of soccer), there is always someone talking, and quite often about things totally unrelated to the action. I preferred the days when the announcer called the action and didn't feel the need to "fill the holes" when nothing signifigant was going on. In wrestling, Vince at MSG was like that. Okerlund, Kent, and Tronngard were like that in the AWA (pre 1986-ish. Thinking of the old St. Paul Arena JIP's they used to broadcast on the TV shows). As a slightly different, non-wrestling example, look at the old pre-game half-hour shows that CBS used to run before Sunday Afternoon Football. Musburger, Cross, George and Jimmy the Greek. They each did their own thing, didn't swing off on wild tangents unrelated to the games at hand, and all were able to convey their points and thoughts without getting drawn into a vortex of strange, inane conversation that may or may not be related to their own points. The 90 minute pre-game shows now seem to have twice the people talking but only half the useful information conveyed to the audience. Maybe it's just me, but more isn't always better when it comes to announcing and commentating. I couldn't agree with this more. I have this whole theory that expanded sports coverage is actually killing good sports commentary. Back in the day, you had only a couple games a week on television. You only needed a handful of announcers, so the talent pool wasn't spread as thin as it is today. Now, you've got ESPN's D, E, or F team calling games, and some of those guys (and girls) have no business on tv. As far as guys not blabbing on to fill holes, I always loved Jack Buck for not doing that. I mostly heard him on the radio, and he'd really let stuff breathe. Sports commentary lost a lot the day he died.

I think 80's WWF booking is generally ass-backwards when it comes to that kind of thing. I think we've discussed it here before in regards to Hogan and how guys that turned on him were booked.
-
I was thinking this while I watched tonight. It seems to be a template of sort for matches to come. Most of my thoughts have been already stated here. The one thing that I really like here is the fact that these two really sell the blood-loss. Once their busted open (the entire match for Chicana), they can barely stand. They stumble around. Even their dives have an out-of-control feel to them. I gotta think this will be a front-runner going into the DVDVR 80's Lucha poll. It'll be interesting to see how it stacks up against some less-seen stuff.

Yeah, wasn't he on Hogan's Survivor Series team in 87? I remember thinking that was odd considering their history.

So, Dan Akroyd was going to be the draw? -
I'm a big fan of the couple that wears neon track suits in the front row at a lot of current WWE stuff. The guy's a big bald dude with like flourecent yellow, and (I'm guessing) his wife is in pink. I know I've seen them at least 2 or 3 times on Raw in the last couple of years. One time was just a couple of weeks ago. I swear I've actually seen the Hogan guy at a show I was in attendance for. Can't remember when for the life of me.

No, Doc turned babyface because his partner (DiBiase) turned babyface and he got a lot of local mainstream news attention for pulling people from a burning car (Rick Steiner helped, too, but they didn't turn him. I forget if they were able to kayfabe him out of the news coverage). Watts wasn't pissed that Williams didn't keep kayfabe and let them burn like a true heel?

Who did fights in movies, one of which was Jackie Chan's "Wheels on Meals", which is where Misawa's "Spartan X" theme came from. And the circle of life is complete. (Thanks Indikator!) -

Yeah, I'm in tv, so no beats for us. It's something different every night. Some guys are more knowledgeable in certain areas than others, so they'll be on that stuff more often. It's funny, I was at the state capital today with all the beat writers and radio guys that basically live there. I always get annoyed because those guys can't talk about anything not related to state politics. They live in quite the insulated little world.
