In this update, Bobby Heenan hypes the debut of Narcissus, someone who is "beyond perfection", at the Royal Rumble.

 

Gene Okerlund then reads the dictionary to provide the definition of the word "Narcissus". No wonder they changed it to The Narcissist.

Luger hated the name and pushed to have it changed to "The Narcissist".

Add to this the fact that they gave the name Narcissus/Narcissist to a guy with a manager with a consistent and audible lisp.

Bobby's lisp only seem to come out when he was excited and started screaming and hollering. When he was relaxed it was barely noticeable

Normally, yes, but is seemed to come out consistently whenever he said the Narcissus/Narcissist . It made me think of Wallace Shawn trying to say his own name.

Thanks to Icopro for wishing us a Happy New Year. Lisp or not, Narcissus does not exactly roll off the tongue easy. I can imagine many on the roster botching that one. I always thought it was just Narcissist from the beginning.

Good promo from Heenan, but there was absolutely no money in a guy wrestling as "Narcissus." Wise move to change that. I along with most of the WWF audience of 1992-93 needed that dictionary definition.

Heenan promo setting up someone truly perfect and in love with himself who will take out Mr. Perfect. Nice to finally start building Luger again. Refers to him as Narcissus.

 

I know its not this simple, but how far are you going to get giving a guy a name that sounds like something you stutter? Narcissist is better, but its not good. One of those times where overthinking is a problem.

Kudos to Luger for pushing for the name change as it was for the better. Bobby puts him over huge on the promo but this felt very old feeling with the backdrop. Okerlund reading the description was good follow up.

I'm glad that they at least gave Luger his name instead of simply calling him Narcissus. That would have been wrestlecrap from the very start.

 

Heenan can still talk them into the building, metaphorically speaking, and Vince is still putting his hottest heel talent with Heenan even though he can't go down to ringside anymore. How many other retired managers could you ever say that about?

 

Using the dictionary and reading the definition of narcissus is exactly what you'd expect from Mean Gene. Boy, will they miss him when he leaves!
