Gene brings Eric Bischoff out to discuss Sting recently making clear that he wants Hogan in the ring. Bischoff says it's just simply not going to happen, so WCW will have to just continue on without Sting. JJ Dillon calls from the WCW office and says he is determined to somehow work through all the obstacles the NWO layers are putting up and has PROMISED we will see Hogan vs Sting before the end of the year. Bischoff freaks out and cuts the promo of all promos about this, which brings Sting out from behind, which scares Bischoff. Sting leaves a Hollywood Rules shirt on Bischoff's head and kicks him to the mat, then stuffs the shirt in his mouth! Sting smiles for the first time in a year, which the announcers pick up on and the crowd loves! Great segment. This is some amazing hype.

JJ had set an big ultimatum for Sting on this show but isn’t here live?! I guess the focus was going to be on Sting/Bischoff to close the segment but strange that JJ would pretending to be Lee Marshall calling in by phone. Dillon finally gets it and what Sting wants is a match with Hogan! Bischoff of course flips as Sting comes down to the ring and stuffs a Hollywood shirt in his mouth. Excellent segment with Bischoff selling Sting big and still months away from the actual match with Hogan.

Bischoff was terrific here, cutting a money promo and getting totally humiliated afterward. Sting just smiling got a huge reaction. Great segment, great build to a match that was… four months away. Which would be an issue eventually, although the heat was so huge for this programm that they could sustain some lost of momentum. They really had the feud of the decade (until then at least).

They're still pushing the narrative of Sting speaking "loud and clear" at the Clash--which he obviously didn't, but this is one of those things you can get away with when you're as hot as 1997 WCW. A lot of those "oh, WCW" moments just don't matter as much. Bischoff does a good job wearing multiple hats here, going from his usual cocky self (I forgot about his attempts to make "bite me" into a catchphrase) to a scared and angry man to a quivering pile of goo in the face of Sting.
