Ricky Jackson
Listen to the show or this man's eyebrows will haunt your dreams forever... Also have to add this bit on Wild Bull from wiki because it is so awesome. Bull Curry: the walking riot One of the trademarks of Bull Curry was his “wildman†look with bushy eyebrows, maniacal facial expressions and insane eyes that could scare the crowd just by looking at them. In one case he scared a girl at ringside so badly she had to be carried from the ring in terror. The wild look coupled with his wild brawling style made Bull Curry one of the most hated rule-breakers in wrestling, he was so hated in places that riots broke out more than once as irate fans attacked Curry in the ring. 1955: a match between Curry and Ray McIntyre resulted in more than a 140 fans being taken to the hospital after a riot broke out. 1956: Curry was jumped by a fan who was displeased with Curry’s brutal treatment of local star George Becker. Curry broke the fans jaw with a single punch. 1958: During a match with Pepper Gomez in Galveston, Texas a fan struck Bull Curry with an iron pipe. Curry chased the fan out of the ring, catching up with him in the balcony where he beat him up. 1968: While wrestling Emil Dupreé in Worcester, Massachusetts a fan jumped in the ring and jumped on Curry’s back. Curry punched the fan so hard that he was reportedly unconscious for two days. Year unknown: During a match in Texas Curry got a bucket of yellow paint dumped over his head by a fan. Late sixties: During a televised match, Curry used a cinder block on his opponent. The man went into the hospital for stitches. Curry was arrested and sentenced to jail for his actions. The only time he was allowed out was to wrestle, so for the next four weeks of televised matches, he was escorted to and from the ring in handcuffs by police, being cuffed and returned to jail when he was finished with his match for that week. soup23
Another great show guys and Shoe you did good (not sure if this was your podcast debut or not). Sorrow's love for Albano knows no bounds. I am looking forward to the Valiants and seeing Jimmie in an WWWF setting period.
shoe
Thanks Soup. It was my 2nd. I did an AWA one a few months back with Will and Johnny. I don't know many people that I can talk about wrestling I like so I had a real fun time doing it.
soup23
Yes, I remembered hearing your voice on something before but had predated it to the old Segunda Caida days. Anyway, I am looking forward to getting to the Sheik vs. Backlund match. I watched that one a while ago like the Valentine vs. Backlund draw and again thought it was probably Sheiks best non Slaughter match that I could think of right off hand. bradhindsight
03-26 BRUNO SAMMARTINO vs IVAN KOLOFF MADISON SQUARE GARDEN **1/2 (some repeated spots but fun power stuff) 03-26 ALBANO/VALIANTS vs ZBYSZKO/GAREA/DUSTY RHODES MADISON SQUARE GARDEN *3/4 (underwhelming face loss) 03-26 PETER MAIVIA vs IVAN PUTSKI MADISON SQUARE GARDEN * (curfew draw - all punching) 04-14 GREG VALENTINE vs SD JONES CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING * (squash) 04-14 VALIANTS vs TED DIBIASE/FRED CURRY/STEVE TRAVIS CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING ** (good brawl at the end) 06-02 NIKOLAI VOLKOFF vs JOSE ESTRADA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING * 06-04 BOB BACKLUND vs GREAT HUSSEIN ARAB WWF TITLE MADISON SQUARE GARDEN ***3/4 Finished up this disc and just started listening to the podcast. I liked Bruno/Ivan enough, certainly crisp and was cool to hear the crowd making the ten count and go CRAZY when it hit 10. I liked seeing Dusty and his shtick (and elbows) but pretty crappy 6-man with what seemed like a botched ending and was real curious why no one made the save from the face side. No payoff with Dusty and Albano either (which Vince even notes). I didn't mind the Valiants in their other match here with Ted getting to debut on the set, pretty fun brawl to close out the show with the credits rolling. I like the in-between squash matches to highlight other guys in the promotion at the time (obviously not much happening in April and May 79 ). The main event for the disc is certainly worth the wait - solid 30 minute match, I don't think I'd put it above either Valentine match but a solid #3 through the first half of 79. Interested to listen to what everyone rated this one. The chair stuff was awesome - crowd just went bezerk when that got introduced.
BrickHithouse
(obviously not shit for available footage from April and May 79 ). fixed that for you
bradhindsight
I'm with Johnny - wonky ending or not, I still liked that Valentine / Backlund rematch a lot - and put it right there (rated the rematch **** with the draw at ***3/4) with the Sheik match (***3/4ish) Just finished listening - glad Parv had everyone talk about the big three we've seen so far. Blassie as a Batman villain (pretty much The Penguin with the "MCMAHON" stuff) was $$$
soup23
On the docket tonight: 03-26 BRUNO SAMMARTINO vs IVAN KOLOFF MADISON SQUARE GARDEN This didn't set my world on fire. Bruno's arm work was very good but seemed more like a means to an end and way to kill time than anything substantial with it. This also had some kind of awkward moments like the spot with Bruno on the outside and Ivan perched on the top rope for 25 seconds. Finishing bump for Ivan was cool though. **1/2 03-26 ALBANO/VALIANTS vs ZBYSZKO/GAREA/DUSTY RHODES MADISON SQUARE GARDEN I was pumped for this. Guys I am familar with but in different settings. Then Dusty started out jiving around and playing to the crowd and I was all in. These guys fooled me. The finish to the first fall was a disaster. Second fall was better and the finish with the Valiants running into each other was pretty neat. I still don't know how the third fall got so screwed up but it was another trainwreck and besides Albano running to the back, I was not amused by this. 17 minutes but it felt way longer. *1/2 03-26 PETER MAIVIA vs IVAN PUTSKI MADISON SQUARE GARDEN This was a match. Maivia clubbed Ivan. Ivan returned the favor. The referee turning into a judge and declaring Ivan the winner seemed pretty stupid to me. Weird MSG card overall with 4 relative big matches but nothing really clicking. * 03-79 VALIANTS/ALBANO, PUTSKI, MAIVIA/BLASSIE PROMOS WWF TV I can't believe how botched these promos are. There would be a million GIF's of something like Maivia's promo if he stopped in mid sentence today. I also wasn't as high on the Blassie promo as everyone else on the show even though it was ok. Albano was drunk off his ass and Putski said nothing. 04-14 GREG VALENTINE vs SD JONES CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING Jobber match that gets a slight bump with Greg's elbows looking good and the post match promo from Greg. 1/2* 04-79 TED DIBIASE, VALIANTS PROMOS WWF TV Decent babyface promo by Ted talking about scouting the Valiants. Valiants didn't say a lot and Albano mispronounced a name which Vince pounced all over. 04-14 VALIANTS vs TED DIBIASE/FRED CURRY/STEVE TRAVIS CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING Now we are talking. Wicked fun studio brawl with Travis showing some fire, Curry bringing energy, and the Valiants being the scuzziest heels alive. Using the tag rope and the ring rope and constantly interfering and clubbing the faces. Huge brawl as the credits start rolling. ***1/2 06-02 NIKOLAI VOLKOFF vs JOSE ESTRADA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING Volkoff looked strong as hell in this match. Not a ton other stuff in this and Volkoff's back breaker finisher looked weak. * 06-04 BOB BACKLUND vs GREAT HUSSEIN ARAB WWF TITLE MADISON SQUARE GARDEN Beautiful pro wrestling match that builds and build to a chaotic finish. mat work was competitive and fierce. The spot with the full nelson that Johnny and Pete marked over on the podcast was straight amazing. Once the chair enters the frey, the crowd was ignited and I didn't have a problem with the officiating since he let it go on both sides. Atomic drop is still not a very good finisher but worked better here than in the Valentine rematch. Just great stuff. **** Conclusions: Not digging any of the three wise men so far and have the big Backlund matches ranked 1. one hour draw vs. Valentine 2. vs. Hussein Arab 3. rematch with Valentine. bradhindsight
I need to rewatch the 4-14 tag match. I loved the studio brawl but , other than the tag rope, didn't note much from the main portion of the match. Other than that, we are almost identical on our ratings there Chad. Kevin Ridge
I've wondered about Bruno's fro as years later he would have the comb over to try to cover up the losing his hair. Could just be natural hair loss but it looked so full with the fro. Can't imagine being able to wear a hair piece as a wrestler though and it not coming off. Ivan would have got major heat if he just pulled off Bruno's wig. Bruno may have not be cranking the arm but they way he was flexing you think he has the strength to hurt someone. That criss cross finish Bruno did needs to be brought back for the Royal Rumble. What better way to eliminate someone by confusing them into running at you so you can just backbody drop them out. I probably liked the six man more than you guys. Not saying it was actually good though. They went long on the first fall and then had the next two falls happen very quickly. Wasn't balanced out right. Garea might be my MVP as he ends up getting pinned for an eight count when nothing happened to him! Albano is a indeed smarter than all of us. Blassie was using his cane also for some fencing against a ringside photographer. That fan kept screaming "Polish Power". He even had some type of little horn/cone he was using. I wish Maivia had went after as the fan kept giving him the finger. I've only seen one other Maivia match from the Greatest Families DVD WWE released. He sang nice little song before the match. I know SD Jones doesn't have the best win percentage but I thought he would get a few more minutes here against Valentine. Ted is bland during his promo. Got a kick out of Jimmy Valiant falling back into the turnbuckle as Curry was doing random gymnastics. Jerry Valiant is either rubbing some Vick's vapor rub on his opponent or trying to choke him out. Loved them brawling all over the place and the music and end credits roll. I don't think I've ever seen someone get pinned with their feet so high in the air like Estrada did. Backlund versus Sheik really good. I like Backlund's feats of strength where he looks like he bridging out of move all by himself and not needing any cooperation from his opponents. If only someone in MMA could get the fans to count along as the crank on someone's arm. A police officer ringside actually tried to take the chair from Sheik. That was funny. I'm cool with the Atomic Drop as finisher. Bob got them up in the air and would charge forward as he dropped them over his knee. Another excellent show and the additions of the Three Wise Men is great.

JerryvonKramer
Listen to the show or this man's eyebrows will haunt your dreams forever... Kelly, I just stumbled on this on KM, apparently Bobby Fulton of The Fantastics is to thank for this match being available: Wild Billy Curry vs. Luiz Martinez from 75/6 from Columbus, OH Vets Memorial. Filmed on 8mm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0qpi7ZPWtk Pretty wild brawl featuring what appears to be a piece of lead piping. Some good blood. The eyebrows are also in full effect.
