Loss Posted August 26, 2014 Report Share Posted August 26, 2014 I would be very interested in a list of all the recommended viewing (matches - not necessarily just for match quality, promos, angles, etc.) from January 1, 2010 to the end of this year. I'm putting the idea out there in case there's anyone here who'd like to take leadership of it and make it happen, but I think it would be a good resource to get it down to something like this: 1st Tier - Essential, must-see viewing ... the best of the best 2nd Tier - Great and worth seeing 3rd Tier - Worth checking out (fun TV match, interesting carry job, good lead-in to another match, etc.) Anyone want to make something of this? I'd add LA Park vs. Wagner Jr. from I believe 5/11/13 which I prefer to the Mesias bout, but both are spectacular and 1st tier matches here. A couple other NJPW picks: Okada vs. Naito (March 2012) Most Shield TV matches belong in Tier 3, with a few in Tier 2. Their top-shelf PPV matches have already been listed. Offhand the one where they lost for the first time on Smackdown was great, as well as the few that immediately preceded it, but really you will not regret including most of their 6 man tags. Graham Crackers Posted August 27, 2014 Report Share Posted August 27, 2014 Virus vs Guerrero Maya from 6/7/2011 is probably my favorite match from this decade so far. Wrote this on WKO when I first watched it: MOTY. Not only is this a great modern CMLL match, it also feels like a huge moment. Each fall gets plenty of time and the crowd seemed really into everything. The matwork in those first two falls was fantastic, you know, like a title match should have but it gets even better in that last fall. Nearfalls in lucha are tricky. Sometimes a decent modern lucha match can lose me when they start trading bombs but it worked pitch perfect here. When those bombs first start showing up after Maya hits the cerebrina driver it's a logical extension of the matwork after the cerebrina didn't submit Virus. He does the cerebrina driver a second time hoping to finish him off. Then there's that incredible Virus comeback. The 90s AJPW comparison is appropriate here. Replace some of the moves with elbows and the awesome senton with an elbow suicida and it wouldn't have seemed out of place in a Misawa match. I'll add: Makoto Hashi & Kengo Mashimo vs. Daisuke Ikeda & Takahiro Oba, (FUTEN, 10/24/2010) which is one of the best Battlarts style tags ever. Great writeup by Phil here: http://segundacaida.blogspot.com/2011/04/come-quietly-futen-rules-society.html Takahiro Oba/Takeshi Ono vs Kengo Mashimo/Manabu Suruga (FUTEN, 5/30/2010) isn't too far off. I wrote this way back when: Ono vs Suruga was super intense. Mashimo used to pretend to be mini Hashimoto and now he is really starting to look like mini Hashimoto, kicking ass and shrugging guys off. I like Oba too. One thing I always liked about Battlarts was that in addition to hybrid shoot/pro style offense, it could also have bigger characters than most shoot feds. Ishikawa was Inoki, Ikeda was surly, and Otsuka was a wrestling nerd who would mimic other wrestling styles before dropping people on their heads. Oba looks goofy and dumb. I'm not saying he structures a match or wrestles just like John Cena but he acts like like I imagine a big goofy WWE babyface who is in over his head would act in a FUTEN match. The playing to the crowd and the signature spots are all a part of that. Pierrothcito vs. Demus 3:16 (CMLL, 8/24/2010) The third fall features some truly transcendent wrestling. The story of two mini rudos giving it all for a shot at the normal sized division is unique and it's the two best modern minis (with Pierrithcito being my favorite mini of the last few years). The transition from chops to punches as this gets more intense is perfect. It seems so universal that I wonder what wrestling fan wouldn't like this. The biggest flaw of this match is that like most modern CMLL it suffers from short opening falls which might end up being a factor when I get down to watching everything else from 2010. 2010 IWRG was pretty sweet. Black Terry/Doctor Cerebro vs Hijo del Diablo/Gringo Loco (IWRG, 2/7/2010) - gets points for being the first good cage match I've ever seen in lucha. And possibly the only good one I've ever seen.
