The most hilarious part of this storyline was Marianna coming out with a black eye during a Chaz/Godfather match, and naturally THAT got the pimp incensed, and he went nuts attacking Chaz for it.

If I recall correctly, and this came from Herb Kunze but he got it from the Observer, Chaz "breaking character" on the air was supposed to send a subtle message to the audience that if you don't want to do an angle or a character in the WWF, you just refuse to do it and everything's fine! So Owen didn't have to do that stunt at Over the Edge - he could have said no, like Beaver Cleavage did.

Of course, Owen had already said no to an angle where he was secretly getting it on with Debra behind Jeff's back. There's a fine line between standing up for yourself and being perceived as a problem child.

 

That said...this seems a little conspiracy-theory-ish to me. Isn't it more likely that it was seen that the gimmick simply didn't work?

I don't know. I think I would have rather done the beaver gimmick than wrestle in underwear with a big smiley face on the crotch. Of course his next gimmick was a shiek gimmick with D-Lo brown.

Interesting tidbit on the Owen stuff. Anyway Chaz from Jersey doesn't seem to have much of a shelf life either.

The sad thing about that Owen theory is that Owen returning to the Blue Blazer gimmick was (in his opinion) PUNISHMENT for saying no to the Debra angle!
