kjh
Great stuff here, sort of hurts JDW talking point that he is overrated as gajin. Are these all singles matches? I also consider it a plus that when NJPW was struggling they went to Murdoch v. Inoki, though you could soon that another way The overwhelming majority of them were tag matches (he had only one singles match with Baba, he had more singles matches with Inoki, but still only around ten). But in the tag matches with Baba, Murdoch was usually the star of the team, outside of a 1975 tour where he reformed The Texas Outlaws with Dusty Rhodes. I think the worst way you can interpret this is that both Baba and Inoki loved working with him on spot shows, even if they didn't have that many major singles matches with him. KrisZ
I feel like me & Keith are the Texas Outlaws of this thread right now How many world title shots did he have in his career? Who were they against? In what towns/buildings? Keith hit that pretty hard there. Give us a list of the top feuds/rivalries Killer Karl Kox, Funks, Dusty Rhodes, Dick the Bruiser, Bruiser Brody, Dick Slater, Ted DiBiase, Ric Flair, Ivan Koloff & Iron Sheik, Buzz Sawyer, The Nightmare (Randy Culley), Butch Reed, Dr. Death, Barry Windham, that's just hitting the main ones. How often was Murdoch really a top gaijin? See Keith's work. How does his run in Mid-South in 85 make for positive ammunition as a HOFer? His last great run as a headliner in a US promotion with a legendary angle and some fantastic matches. How much of his drawing power was attributed to being put on top of a hot promotion?[ Elaborate on this statement... the normal towns were up, but big shows were down. /quote] Murdoch was one of the building blocks of New Orleans wrestling in the 70's and was always a great draw in that area. Other areas he was a top guy when they were hot so it's kind of a push. Murdoch's ability to be a special attraction was big as well as certain areas could bring him in and he would be a draw. Regarding attendances it's a dicey situation because we don't have numbers. Give us a breakdown of why he was so revered in Japan if you can or how important he was in Japan. His charisma got him over tremendously with the fans and the other wrestlers. Keith mentioned earlier that Baba & Inoki loved working with him because he was extremely easy to have a good match with especially entertaining ones. He also would cut fun promos on TV on the rare occasion that happened. Regarding the Texas Outlaws as a team......like we said on the podcast Murdoch was the star of the team and I guess the comparison could be made between them and The Hollywood Blondes (Austin & Pillman) where Pillman/Murdoch were the top guys in the team only to have their partners become one of the biggest stars in wrestling history. Again I didn't post the 80's results dump yet and I might tomorrow.

JerryvonKramer
I can confirm that that 69 Dory match was not a title shot. There is an incredibly full NWA title listing on Wrestlingdata.com, find here: http://wrestlingdata.com/index.php?befehl=titles&kategorie=8&liga=16&aufgabe=matches&titel=144 1969 is about 93 pages in, where the Dory/Kiniski switch is at the top of the page. Rufus R. Jones got a hell of a lot of title shots! Also quite funny to note Dennis Stamp getting title shots against Funk in 76. I'm going to go through this pulling out all instances of either Dick Murdoch, Ivan Koloff or Ken Patera. Somewhat ironically given our earlier discussion, his numbers are helped out quite a bit by the fact that he headlined in Lubbock, TX But if you look, he also has multiple shots in Orlando, St. Louis, Greensboro, Charlotte, and The Omni. You'll note that Ivan Koloff only has two NWA title shots for the whole of the 70s. Why is that? Three reasons: 1. He was blackballed in 1975 for working IWA, 2. Associated with the WWF belt and as an opponent for Bruno, 3. He was a heel, which meant that he wasn't going to be the guy Harley Race or Terry Funk would face. He was a regular opponent for Dusty Rhodes in 1981. The lack of shots against Jack Brisco is because of the blackballing. Still, he doesn't have a great many shots to his name. Will leave Patera to Dylan. All-in-all, Murdoch's case looks a good bit stronger having mined that data.
Dylan Waco
Patera is missing title shots from Toronto and McGuirk at minimum. There are also unconfirmed claims that he got 3 title shots in Central States in 81 but I've never found results. But his big title shots - even outside of WWF - were for that title (challenged for it for at least 4 different offices).
JerryvonKramer
You've taken us over the page Dylan. Hope that doesn't mean people will miss my previous post, because it took quite a while to put together. If there is McGuirk data missing, then surely that would mean Murdoch probably had more than 41 shots given that he worked there regularly. I went through every single result in that list from 1969 to 1990 looking for the three guys. I have to say, and this isn't me trying to knock Murdoch, that it doesn't tell us THAT much about him other than that he was the guy they were putting against the champ when he came into town -- at least in the Florida and Amarillo loops. The reason that Murdoch has so many, if you look, is because the champ would come into the territory and then they'd take that match on the road around the regular local loop. So every time the NWA champ goes to West Texas, that's +3 or even +5 onto Murdoch's tally. The reason I'm not sure how much it tells us is because some of the other names that recurred with real regularity weren't exactly stellar. Rufus R. Jones must have had about 60 title shots from the 60s to the 80s. Is Rufus R. Jones a HoFer because of that? Dick Slater is another name that came up a lot. The more "meaningful" title shots are in St. Louis -- because they were always bringing top names in -- and then later in JCP when the territories were winding down. Which to his credit, Murdoch has a bunch of too. On face value it seems to add a lot to Murdoch's case, but I'm not sure it does. Because of the way the NWA title was booked, a title shot doesn't mean what repeat title shots vs. Bruno at MSG meant. Why? Because all it really means is "this is the top guy we had in the area at the time who we could put up to lose against the champ". Again, not trying to run Murdoch down, but trying to contextualise what this data actually means.
shoe
I think the NWA Champ toured more in Amarillo because of the Funks. That's not a knock at Murdoch but might have helped him get shots in that territory.

goodhelmet
I think what it also tells us is that Murdoch was good enough to be put in world title positions but not going to hold the strap. However, would Murdoch holding the strap for a month, 6 months, a year in between Brisco, Funk or Race reigns look out of the ordinary? Not really. I have to say his number of title shots even into the 80s was pretty striking to me. I should also note that he had a run with the Mid-Atlantic title as late as 1983 defeating none other than Dory Funk Jr! Probably Dory's first clean job since 1973. And yes, he was off to Japan the following week.

KrisZ
Just remembered about Dylan's point about Patera the babyface......yeah I totally forgot about his early life as a babyface and yeah he did well in that role considering his experience. When it comes to St. Louis, Patera is a Top 5 guy IMO. Another theory with Murdoch was if he had taken wrestling more seriously in the 70's he would've had backing for a potential NWA title run...Muchnick loved him but him being a character hurt any chances he had. JerryvonKramer
The missing piece for me of the Murdoch case is still the evidence of him going into territories and working the top names like I showed Ivan doing. It has been demonstrated now that he had plenty of shots at the NWA title (40+) and plenty of matches (i.e. losing efforts) against Baba and Inoki, but what are the killer Murdoch feuds that helped carry promotions? Like for Ivan you'd point to his stuff with Bruno in WWF, then his stuff against Mil Mascaras in IWA 1975, his stuff with Dick the Bruiser in WWA circa 1977, his runs tagging with Ole Anderson in GCW and tagging with Pat Patterson in Florida, and his feuds with people like Paul Jones, Dusty and Steamboat in Mid-Atlantic. Beyond his Mid-South 85-6 material, what are Murdoch's?

goodhelmet
Great reading there. On the Mid South 8 mm footage that Bix converted there is a great interview showing Dick injured and Dusty cuts the "that's blood" promo as a result. When did Dusty and Dick reunite in Mid South against I think the Samoans.

KrisZ
Speaking of Murdoch....I just watched him vs. Kim Duk in 1982 and Bill Watts tells the story about how Murdoch walked in a bar one night and this dude who was sitting at a table went up to Murdoch and wanted to see how tough he was so Murdoch took him outside and beat the shit out of him then went back inside, sat down at that dude's table and ate his steak dinner.
