KrisZ
Thing is with Ivan though is that the argument can be made well was it him who was over or was it his manager at the time especially in the early days when he didn't talk. Also let's not forget the argument from earlier in that was it Ivan who was drawing or was the promotion or Bruno, Pedro, Backlund the draws. Ivan was part of 2 huge shows the one where he won and lost the title but look at the show that broke the record WWWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden - July 24, 1971 (21,912; sell out; new attendance record)The first ever $100,000 wrestling gate in New YorkLittle Beaver defeated Joey Russell at 10:24Mike Pappas defeated Jack Evans at 7:25The Fabulous Kangaroos defeated Manuel Soto & Bill White at 29:21 in a Best 2 out of 3 falls match; fall #1 - Costello pinned Soto; fall #2 - Soto pinned Kent; fall #3 - Kent pinned WhiteJimmy Valiant defeated the Black Demon at 8:17Chief Jay Strongbow defeated Beautiful Bobby at 7:04Bruno Sammartino pinned Blackjack Mulligan at 1:04 after a series of bodyslamsWWWF World Champion Pedro Morales & Gorilla Monsoon defeated WWWF International Tag Team Champions Luke Graham & Tarzan Tyler in a Best 2 out of 3 Falls match at 20:13; fall #1: the champions were disqualified; fall #2: Tyler pinned Monsoon; fall #3: Morales pinned Tyler Then this also beat it WWWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden - September 2, 1972 (21,819)Chuck O'Connor defeated Joe NovaEl Olympico pinned Joe Turco at 13:51Sonny King defeated the Black DemonWWWF Tag Team Champions Mr. Fuji & Professor Toru Tanaka defeated Gorilla Monsoon & Manuel Soto in a Best 2 out of 3 Falls matchThe Spoiler fought Chief Jay Strongbow to a drawWWWF World Champion Pedro Morales pinned Ernie Ladd at 15:50Bruno Sammartino defeated George Steele at 12:29; after the bout, it was announced that Sammartino would face Pedro Morales for the title at Shea Stadium on Sept. 30 (Sammartino's MSG return after more than a year) Now we get to new levels WWWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden - August 7, 1976 (22,000)Televised on the MSG Network - featured Vince McMahon on commentary:Johnny Rivera pinned Jose Cadiz at 10:41 with a flying bodypress off the topSD Jones pinned Johnny Rodz at 8:12 after kicking from the turnbuckle and falling back on Rodz as Rodz attempted a German suplex and lifting his left shoulder when both were on the matWWWF Tag Team Champions the Executioners defeated Jose Gonzalez & Dominic DeNucci (sub. for Haystacks Calhoun) in a Best 2 out of 3 falls match at 22:54, 2-1; fall #1: Executioner #1 pinned DeNucci at 10:11 following a double backbreaker; fall #2: DeNucci pinned Executioner #1 at 7:29 following an airplane sping; fall #3: Executioner #2 pinned Gonzalez at 5:14 after Executioner #1 kicked his partner's back as Gonzalez lifted him up for a bodyslam so that he would land on top of Gonzalez for the pinBruiser Brody defeated Kevin Sullivan via submission at 2:29 with the backbreaker; prior to the bout, Brody was escorted to the ring by the Grand Wizard (Brody's MSG debut)Chief Jay Strongbow & Billy White Wolf defeated Baron Mikel Scicluna & Rocky Tomayo at 5:58 when White Wolf pinned Tomayo with a double chopWWWF World Champion Bruno Sammartino defeated Stan Hansen in a steel cage match at 11:11 by escaping the cage through the door after continually beating on Hansen with Hansen's own loaded elbow pad that he Bruno had ripped off Hansen's armBobo Brazil defeated Doug Gilbert via count-out at the 35-second mark when Gilbert left ringside after receiving Brazil's Coco ButtIvan Putski pinned Skandor Akbar at 2:56 with the Polish Hammer I won't even go into the SBG shows because well it was SBG and there were 9 more shows in the 80's that drew over 22,000. Another thing that didn't look good in Ivan's favor was that he was in WWF in 1983 the year before Murdoch was and sure Ivan got shots at Backlund but if you look at the overall runs Murdoch was way more successful. JerryvonKramer
If Ivan's case was just New York you might have an argument but he main evented in the Mid-West, Florida, Carolinas and Georgia too not to mention Montreal and Quebec. You can always make the argument with heels that it was the other guy drawing, but Ivan was in demand everywhere and even after being black balled for a year or so. From the evidence presented so far, Murdoch wasn't.
KrisZ
Ivan wasn't blackballed for a year like you said......his last IWA date I have is 7/22/75...then the next date I have is 9/6/75 working for Nick Gulas & Harry Thornton in Chattanooga which was NWA then he was back in WWWF in October which back then WWWF was a NWA territory as well as working for Frank Tunney in Toronto while with WWWF. JerryvonKramer
Also without looking at the figures, I'd predict that the Russians tag title run curb stomps whatever Murdoch-Adonis did in terms of main events and carrying B-shows etc. And that run is pretty secondary to Ivan's case. JerryvonKramer
Kris when we interviewed him, he said it took a long time for promoters to really start trusting him again ... So while he had bookings he didn't have a decent run till probably that. 77 Florida run.

JerryvonKramer
The only area where I can see it really hurting him is in those NWA title shots, just two for the whole 70s.

goodhelmet
I am also in agreement that Ivan is a Hall of Famer but take your Ivan agenda to a new thread and present the case there. I know you don't respect guys who don't work New York or Atlanta or only headline in podunk Texas, Mid Atlantic, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, St. Louis, Ohio and Japan. We can also ignore the reality that Murdoch was working at a high level up through 1989. Kris and I are working on something big here and you are distracting us. JerryvonKramer
It's not an Ivan vs Murdoch thing. Kolof's just one example of a handful of guys who were in real demand everywhere. All I've said is that up through 79, Murdoch doesn't look like one of them. He looks more of a regional player, for whatever reason. Keep going, I won't say anymore. Dylan Waco
Point of comparison is part of HOF debate. goodhelmet
I don't mind comparisons but when the person you are discussing it refuses to acknowledge counterpoints then it becomes a broken record circle jerk that accomplishes nothing. Parv has said his peace several times over and over. We failed at convincing him. People have different criteria. It's time to move on. I prefer you and shoe asking questions that challenge Kris to dig deep and me to look for trends in the results.

shoe
Dylan I see you didn't vote Murdoch. Did the podcast and the data drops not convince you enough? Also if you could have had another 2 spots would Murdoch make your ballot? It still seemed like you had a couple more people ahead of Murdoch. Final question what kept Murdoch off your ballot? I'm curious if Kris, Will, or Keith can address it? Or make a counter argument?

Dylan Waco
Dylan I see you didn't vote Murdoch. Did the podcast and the data drops not convince you enough? Also if you could have had another 2 spots would Murdoch make your ballot? It still seemed like you had a couple more people ahead of Murdoch. Final question what kept Murdoch off your ballot? I'm curious if Kris, Will, or Keith can address it? Or make a counter argument? All great questions. I have a LONG answer to this, but I think it may be better suited for the WON HOF thread. Can you repost this there?

goodhelmet
I was reading JJ Dillon's book and the chapter on West Texas. He doesn't give any real insight into what the gates were like but there are tons of stories about working in the territory for over a year. There are also some great Murdoch stories in there as well.
KrisZ
1983 time now and notice that I put some 1984 here as well because Murdoch was one of the VERY few that WWF allowed to work elsewhere at that time. WingedEagle
Do we have attendance figures for the shows Murdoch headlined versus others? I'd be interested in looking at how he drew when featured and how that compared to business before and after as well as on dates when others might have headlined.
