Interesting idea for a show. I'm not a big fan of "random" tag matches as a concept though. It's very often done poorly in most promotions.

I actually used a random generator to book the show, so this was a shoot!

Basically I didn't want to give away any future matches and this is a small spot show, so might as well give the fans so fun of heel vs heel stuff and the wild card factor.

Maple Leaf Wrestling

August 30, 1983 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Ontario

1. WWF Intercontinental Champion Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs Greg "The Hammer" Valentine w/ Don Carson

A really good back and forth match where Valentine worked the leg and Steamboat kept valiantly fighting back. The time limit ran out while Steamboat was countering a figure-four leglock.

Time Limit Draw @ 20:00

2. "Thunderfoot" Joel Deaton vs Ben Bassarab

Bassarab has a huge advantage with technique, but Deaton gains advantage by cheating and brawling. As it looks like Bassarab was looking on the verge of winning he gets hit by a big boot and gets knocked out.

Winner - Joel Deaton @ 6:57

3. Lord Littlebrook & Tiny Tom vs Cowboy Lang & Haiti Kid

A high paced energy match where Cowboy Lang pins Littlebrook in the end.

Winners - Cowboy Lang & Haiti Kid @ 8:35

4. NWA Canadian Tag Team Champions Ivan Koloff & Super Russian w/ Don Carson vs Wahoo McDaniel & Buzz Tyler in a Steel Cage

As Buzz Tyler makes his way to the ring he his ambushed by Ivan Koloff & Super Russian. They destroy him with a chain to the legs and then wrap it around the ringpost and follow it up with a figure-four leglock. Wahoo McDaniel & Alexis Smirnoff come to ringside, but it is too late. Tyler can not wrestle and is helped to the back by the medics.

Jack Tunney comes to ringside to discuss the situation with Wahoo and then Koloff, Super Russian and Carson. The ring announcer makes the announcement that the match will happen, but Alexis Smrinoff will take Buzz Tyler's place.

The match starts with Koloff and Wahoo and they go right at it. Wahoo with some vicious chops, but the Super Russian hits Wahoo from behind and the Russians gain the advantage through some double teams. They attack Wahoo's leg, just like they did to Tyler. Using a chain and the cage to beat him down. Wahoo can barely stand, but keeps fighting back.

After Koloff was going for a lariat, Wahoo ducks and Koloff nails the cage. This finally gives Wahoo the chance to make the tag to Smirnoff. Koloff and Super Russian back off as Smirnoff gets ready to get all of his revenge. However, instead Smirnoff attacks Wahoo. Koloff jumps Wahoo as well and at this moment Super Russian removes his mask and it's GREG "THE HAMMER" VALENTINE. They beat down Wahoo and the medics are really slow to get out here, because they were helping out Buzz Tyler. Security also comes out eventually get the cage open and save Wahoo. Wahoo leaves on a stretcher while Ivan Koloff, Greg Valentine, Alexis Smirnoff and Don Carson celebrate with the NWA Canadian Tag Team Titles.

No Contest @ 8:04

Intermission: Maple Leaf Wrestling will return on September 27th with Riki Choshu challenging for the NWA Canadian Champion!

5. Battle Royal featuring: Andre the Giant, Leo Burke, Jerry Brisco, Tony Garea, Tiger Conway Jr., Bobby Bass, Al Tomko, Gary Royal, Killer Karl Krupp, Paul Christy, Angelo Mosca Jr. & Rick Patterson

Andre the Giant and Leo Burke are the two biggest stars in the match and are the last two left. While alone they have a short and fun battle, before Andre tosses Burke for the win.

Winner - Andre the Giant @ 12:26

6. NWA World Midget Champion Little Tokyo vs Tiger Jackson

Tiger has his early advantage stopped by salt to the eyes. From there Tokyo works over Tiger, but he keeps kicking out. Tiger makes a huge comeback and looks to have won the title after a crossbody, but Tokyo gets his foot on the rope. From there Tokyo pulls the tights to keep the title.

Winner - Little Tokyo @ 13:52

7. Cuban Assassin & Chicky Starr w/ Bobby Bass vs "Big" Stephen Petipas & Rocky Johnson in a Toronto Street Fight

Both teams wear street clothes to the ring. The match is a brawl all over the ringside area and including using chairs, maracas and even Bobby Bass being bodyslammed through the announcer table. If Bass out of the way Petipas and Johnson seemed ready for victory, but the Cuban Assassin threw a fire ball in Rocky's face for the pinfall.

Winners - Cuban Assassin & Chicky Starr @ 14:57

8. NWA Canadian Champion Rick Martel vs Mr. Saito w/ Jesse "The Body" Ventura

This match is all about Saito working over the back that was hurt on TV two days ago. Rick Martel looked to finally be making a comeback, but when Saito grabbed the referee and they argued Ventura ran Martel's face into the ring post busting him open. That is when Tony Garea came to ringside and chased Ventura to the back.

Later in the contest a bloody Martel with a hurt back is able to kick out of the Saito Suplex. This leads to Saito putting on the scorpion deathlock, but Martel reaches and reaches and gets to the bottom rope. Saito puts Martel on the top turnbuckle and goes for a superplex, but Martel pushes him off and hits a huge flying splash for two. He then locks on the Boston Crab, but Martel's back is so hurt Saito powers out pushing Martel through the ropes. However he hangs on to the apron. Saito runs at him, but Martel nails him with a forearm knocking him down and then hits the slingshot splash for the victory.

Winner - Rick Martel @ 21:21

Greg Valentine is Russian?!? Damn that Smirnoff anyway, I knew he was setting Wahoo up. Great payoff that I expect Wahoo to avenge down the line. Main was really good with Martel overcoming the odds to get Saito after all the cheating. I don't know if the tag match overshadows the main or not though.

edit: Thinking about it, it's the only way to send the crowd home happy. The two big matches beforehand were heel victories to advance the feud in the long run and build up the Russians I assume for future Martel fodder. It would have been hard to get big pops out of the crowd during the main, but when Martel went over I imagine the reaction would make up for it.

Yeah, I tried to give hints all along that it was Valentine (and sometimes Smirnoff standing in) as the Super Russian. Now my super team of Valentine and Koloff are the tag team champions going forward. Glad you guys enjoyed this, I've been planning this for a while.

Some big plans ahead with all of these things, I hope I can pay them off.

More explanations coming on TV this week. The Don Carson whole group will be on The Body Shop to explain.

As we discussed, I did kind of spoil this by reading the television first. I have to say, the Super Russian was a good angle. On one hand, you could have put a relative unknown or semi known guy in there to get a monster push out of it, but having Valentine as the pay off really works well. I think with him, Wahoo, and Martel, you have got a SOLID trio at the top that is to be desired by most. Good use of Andre in the royal. You know I am a mark for them and he was the best. As long as you keep using the minis, things will get a little better each time around.
