The show opens with the playing of the Canadian national anthem in honor of Canada Day.

1. Davey Boy Smith & Dynamite Kid vs. Jim Brunzell & Phil Lafon

A fast paced competitive match that goes back and forth until the Kid is able to isolate Lafon and hit the diving headbutt to win.

Ed Whalen introduces a special guest, former NWA World Heavyweight Champion Terry Funk, who joins us on commentary. Funk mentions he's filling in as a representative of the NWA for Gene Kiniski, who is at the tournament in Toronto for the NWA Canadian Championship featuring Bret Hart.

2. Matt Borne vs. Mike Hammer

Borne takes over quickly and fends off Hammer's comeback attempts to hit an impressive combination of moves in succession to win.

Winner - Matt Borne @ 5:13

After the match Terry Funk gets in the ring to give a dazed Hammer some advice. When an almost unconscious Hammer pushes him off, Funk gives Hammer a piledriver and bloodies him up. Bruce Hart and other members of the locker room come to Hammer's aid. Funk gets on the mic and wants to fight Stu!

Ed Whalen announces Funk has been removed from the building.

3. Curt Hennig vs. The Cobra

Ed Whalen introduces the audience to KY Wakamatsu, who informs us that next week he will introduce a new tag team to the area, The Tokyo Hurricanes.

Next week's show will also feature Bret Hart defending the North American Championship along with an appearance from Stan "The Lariat" Hansen!

A pretaped interview with Dino Bravo and Frank "Frankie" Morell airs. Frank Sinatra's "My Way" plays in the background as they smoke cigars and claim to be coming to Calgary to take the tag titles from the Dungeon Masters "for the cosca".

Commercials.

4. Bruce Hart vs. Jerry Blackwell w/ Jimmy Hart

Bruce Hart takes over quickly and Blackwell is able to cheat to come back. At the 8:00 mark, the ref is knocked out by Blackwell's girth in the corner, and Jimmy Hart comes out of the crowd. Jimmy throws a fireball in Bruce's face and Blackwell hits a huge splash to win.

Winner - Jerry Blackwell @ 10:00

Post match, Davey Boy Smith and Jim Neidhart come to Bruce Hart's rescue, but they are outnumbered when Terry Funk returns with the Moondogs! Jimmy Hart holds Bruce down as Blackwell hits another huge splash on Bruce, this time on his already burned face.

The Dynamite Kid comes out with a steel chair to clear the ring and close the TV show.

After the show goes off the air, Bruce Hart is taken out by paramedics. Terry Funk challenges the remaining babyfaces to a six man bunkhouse tag match, which closes out the house show.

Non-televised matches:

Rip Oliver vs. Hubert Gallant (Pre-show, Winner - Rip Oliver @ 3:54)
Sonny Two Rivers & David Morgan vs. Hiro Saito & KY Wakamatsu (Pre-show, Winners - Sonny Two Rivers & David Morgan @ 6:32)
The Moondogs & Terry Funk vs. Jim Neidhart, The Dynamite Kid & Davey Boy Smith, Bunkhouse Six Man Tag (Post-show, Winners - Moondogs & Funk @ 14:43)

Terry Funk, Jimmy Hart, the Moondogs, and Bruce Hart all taped promos that will air on future episodes of Stampede Wrestling Television.

Look for the Moondogs-Harts feud to continue in All-Star Wrestling.

Stampede Wrestling presents Wrestling At The Corral

July 8, 1983 at the Stampede Corral in Calgary, Alberta (Airdate: 7/9/83)

This week's episode is a special two hour "Wrestle Rodeo Spectacular" edition in celebration of the annual Calgary Stampede.

The show opens with footage from last week, as Bruce Hart is carried out on a stretcher after being burned with a fireball by Jimmy Hart.

1. NWA Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Championship: Bruce Hart © vs. Hiro Saito w/ Shunji Takano and KY Wakamatsu

All the Harts are gathered in the ring, with Bruce heavily bandaged. In a very emotional moment, Bruce forfeits the match and hands the title over to Saito, who runs over to Wakamatsu and Takano as they celebrate like school girls.

Winner - Hiro Saito (New NWA Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Champion) @ 0:00 via forfeit.

Ed Whalen introduces NWA Ambassador Gene Kiniski, who tells Saito not to get too comfortable because even though he was given the title without winning it, he'll have to defend it right now against The Cobra!

2. NWA Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Championship: Hiro Saito © w/ Shunji Takano and KY Wakamatsu vs. The Cobra

The Cobra runs in and starts off like a house of fire. He knocks Wakamatsu off the apron and sends Takano packing. Then Cobra hits Saito with a series of highspots. Saito comes back with eye gouging and hair pulling. He controls for a few minutes, wearing Cobra down with power moves and then stretching him out. Cobra makes the comeback when Wakamatsu's kendo stick misses and hits Saito in the face, busting him open. Cobra works the cut, sending Saito to the outside and hitting a huge plancha. They come back in the ring, and Tanako looks to draw the DQ to save the title, but Cobra knocks him out of the ring again. Saito gets a low blow and hits a huge suplex. He sets Cobra up for a super plex to finish him, but Cobra sends Saito flying from the top rope and follows up with a moonsault to win the Championship!

Winner - The Cobra (New NWA Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Champion) @ 12:34 with a moonsault.

Commercials.

Ed Whalen and Gene Kiniski run down the rest of the card for the show. They explain how Terry Funk has been banned from ever stepping foot in Stampede Wrestling by the NWA Board of Directors, and should Mr. Funk appear in Calgary anytime in the future, his status as a working member for the NWA will be revoked.

3. Davey Boy Smith w/ Dynamite Kid vs. "Ravishing" Randy Rose w/ Dennis Condrey

This starts out as just Davey alone at ringside against Rose, but the interference from Condrey is so effective that Dynamite is forced to join his partner to even the odds. Rose controls most of the match, but Davey is constantly able to work out of his holds with smooth reversals and quick counters. Eventually, as the outside interference is kept at bay by Dynamite, Davey is able to overpower Rose and drop some bombs. Davey ducks a clothesline and hits a huge powerslam to win.

Winner - Davey Boy Smith @ 10:43 with a powerslam.

The Hart Family (Stu, Bret, Bruce, Keith, Wayne, Neidhart, Dynamite, Davey) cut a pre-taped promo from their home in Calgary. They talk about their heritage and legacy within the wrestling world and explain how their ambition has created all sorts of detractors and enemies, including certain members of the All Star Wrestling roster. Keith says competition is one thing, but when you set out to hurt their family physically and financially, expect retribution. They're going to Vancouver to take out the Moondogs, no matter how long it takes. Tonight, he says he'll finish off Jerry Blackwell once and for all and asks Stu to make the match No DQ.

Commercials.

We see footage of Stan Hansen in New Japan Pro Wrestling, wrestling against Andre the Giant, Antonio Inoki, Bob Backlund, and Dusty Rhodes.

4. Stan "The Lariat" Hansen vs. Mike Hammer

Hansen smacks Hammer and immediately hits a huge knee. Hammer is winded, so Hansen picks him up to his feet and knocks him down with another huge smack. Knee drop. Choke. A series of punches pretty much knocks Hammer out completely, but Hansen sends him to the ropes and knocks his head off with the lariat.

Winner - Stan Hansen @ 2:34 with the lariat.

Post match, Hansen grabs his bullrope and hits Hammer square in the head with the cowbell. Hansen grabs the mic and says he's coming back in a few weeks and he's bringing Bruiser Brody and they will take the tag team titles back to Japan so they can pawn them for gold, because he's got a fat wife and 8 hungry kids to feed! He leaves Hammer a bloody mess in the ring.

Jimmy Hart cuts a promo from an undisclosed location.

Anyone with any knowledge of the sport of professional rasslin' can tell you who I am and where I come from: My name is Jimmy Hart, and up until recently I lived in the Greatest City in the World, Memphis, Tennessee. But ya see, as great as that city is...as great as any city is, there's always a bad apple. And the bad apple in Memphis runs around wearing a cheap crown and calling himself the King of Rasslin'. But he's not the King. He's not even worthy of being a servant. I brought a legitimate *Hollywood* star to Memphis rasslin' in Andy Kaufman, and all Lawler did was make fun of him and try to injure him and end his glorious career. And now they're telling people I've been kicked out of Memphis because I lost a match to Lawler, which simply ain't true. The truth is I've beaten Jerry Lawler so many times that the timekeeper in Memphis lost count! The truth is I left on my own accord because I saw the writing on the wall. One night I was in Los Angelos with my good friend, Mr. Kaufman, and as the sun set I looked out over the Hollywood hills. Just then I had a vision. It was the most beautiful vision I'd ever seen. There was no Lawler. There was no Memphis. There was just Jimmy Hart, the noble human being and entertainment sensation, ruling over the entire wrestling world baby! So we have set up shop and fortified the troops in Vancouver. The first order of any business is to look at the competition. Well, to be honest, I didn't see much competition around, but I couldn't help but notice a putrid, awful smell in the distance. That smell of horseshit and cow dung, I thought, "It must be Calgary"! So I devised a small little plan to get rid of the clog in the drain, the shit on my shoes. I figured, hell, I took out Jerry Lawler, the so-called King of Rasslin', I can certainly destroy an entire podunk Family business. Newsflash, Bruce: That production company you hired in Vancouver? That's me! You paid a $15,000 deposit for a fake company to produce your TV show! Guess who pocketed that money? I did! You and Keith signed contracts to work exclusively for All Star Wrestling after being called up in the draft. Guess who's idea it was to draft you?! And just who do you think called up his good friends Terry Funk and Jerry Blackwell and asked them to come to Calgary? It wasn't the Queen of goddamn England I can tell you that! It was Jimmy Hart. The Moondogs were just the icing on the cake. Now, I've got some of your money and I'm gonna spend it to take your pride. I've place a $15,000 bounty on the head of the last little festering boil left in Stampede. That one last hanger-on is gonna get flushed down the drain! Bret Hart, you are the nugget that won't flush! Hell, you're not even worth fifteen grand, but it will be worth it to wear that North American title around my waist before I flush that down the drain too! And why? For what, Bruce? Championships? Pride? No. It's because I want the world to know that there is only one bleeding Hart in professional rasslin'. I want the world to know that there is only one rasslin' capital, and that is Memphis, Tennessee. I want the world to know there is only one promotion in Canada even worth a damn to begin with. But especially, more than anything, Bruce, I want the world to know that there is only one Hart Family in pro rasslin', and that's the First Family and don't you forget it, baby!

Commercials.

5. Dynamite Kid vs. "Loverboy" Dennis Condrey

Due to the outside interference earlier, referee Wayne Hart sends both Davey Boy and Randy Rose to the back, allowing this to be a one-on-one contest. They start out working wrist locks and arm ringers and eventually work it down to the mat. Condrey ends up schooling Billington a bit on the mat, but Dynamite takes over with some even more impressive counters. Condrey gets upset that Dynamite is besting him and starts using underhand tactics, which only serves to bring out the violence in the Kid. He comes back with chops and punches and headbutts. He sends Condrey to the outside and hits a baseball slide, sending Condrey into the guardrail. Condrey reverses an irish whip into the post and Dynamite is a bloody mess. They come back in the ring, with Dynamite just beating the count. Huge butterfly suplex from Condrey. 2 count. Dynamite is hurt. Condrey throws him back outside, looking to win by count out. Dynamite makes it back in the ring and Condrey goes to hit a suplex, but Dynamite rolls him into a small package for the win.

Winner - Dynamite Kid @ 12:19 with a small package.

Post match, Rose joins Condrey as they beat down an already bloodied Kid. They hit the rocket launcher, which appears to bruise Dynamite's rips. Davey Boy makes the save and runs the heels off. The Midnight Express lost both of their singles matches tonight, but they left Dynamite bloodied and bruised.

Commercials.

We're back with the second hour of action in this special two hour edition. NWA Ambassador Gene Kiniski is with new NWA Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Champion, The Cobra. Kiniski explains that Stampede has the best Light Heavyweight wrestling in the sport today and to honor that fact, the National Wrestling Alliance is creating a new division for the weight-class and will eventually crown a new NWA World Light Heavyweight Champion. Kiniski says it is athletes such as the Cobra who make Light Heavyweight action so exciting. KY Wakamatsu interrupts and claims that Hiro Saito is still the rightful champion, despite the fact that Cobra won clean. He gets in Cobra's face, only to have Saito and Takano jump from behind.

6. "Crusher" Jerry Blackwell vs. Keith Hart - No Disqualification

Keith comes out on fire and throws a ton of punches, which hit Blackwell's face like cannon balls and have him reeling. Blackwell falls to the outside after a big shoulder tackle. They brawl around ringside, with Blackwell reversing Hart into the guardrail. Keith comes back and sends Blackwell sailing over a table. Hart chokes him with a camera cable. He gets a chair shot in. Blackwell is cut open. Back in the ring, Hart hits a DDT and thinks he has the match won, but only gets a two count when Blackwell somehow gets his foot on the ropes. How is Blackwell still alive? What will it take for Keith to beat him? Keith gets the ring bell and goes up top. Blackwell ducks and smashes the bells right back in Keith's face. He picks the bell up and hits him again. Now Keith is cut badly as the blood just pours out. Blackwell drops him on his head with a german suplex. Big legdrop. Big splash would finish it but Blackwell is not done. Blackwell goes to the outside and gets a chair. He puts it around Keith's ankle and comes down with a big splash. Referee Wayne Hart calls for the bell, which is in pieces on the mat.

Winner - Jerry Blackwell @ 8:12 via ref stoppage.

Commercials.

Mr. Hito and Jim Neidhart have a few words for Stan Hansen and Bruiser Brody. They are not intimidated and will stop at nothing to defend the NWA Stampede International Tag Team titles right here in Canada.

Ed Whalen introduces Archie "The Stomper" Gouldie to the audience.

"And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth."

Revelation 6:8

You see, cause there will be a day of reckoning here in Stampede Wrestling. A day when all the bloodshed and fighting will stop. A time when only one man is seen as the true Champion of professional wrestling. I will take no prisoners and hold nothing back, and I will destroy anyone who thinks they want to try to stop me. I rode in here on a pale horse. I am death incarnate and I will bring the fires of hell to Stampede Wrestling in order to get what is rightfully mine. I am the darkness in the night. I am the Pale Horse Rider. I am the herd. I am the Stampede. I. Am. The Stomper.

A music video set to Black Sabbath airs as highlights play of Gouldie wrestling as the Mongolian Stomper in Memphis and Japan against big names like Hulk Hogan, Jerry Lawler, Jumbo Tsuruta, and Giant Baba.

Commercials.

7. NWA Stampede North American Heavyweight Championship: Bret Hart © vs. Gama Singh

Singh comes out with a big bag of money, apparently having accepted the bounty and been paid for his services tonight by Jimmy Hart. Bret comes out with Jim Neidhart as backup in case any outsiders should join us tonight. This starts out as a very heated but technical contest. Bret tries to ground Singh with leg work and Singh focuses on Bret's back. Each man wears each other down until Bret gets himself into trouble by missing a high cross body block. Singh works over the back and stretches him out with the camel clutch. It appears Bret is done for when he is able to power out. It doesn't take long before he's back in the hold, however.

Commercials.

We're back and Bret is now powering out for a second time, but Singh won't let that happen, so he gets off to work the back some more. Singh gets caught coming off the top with a double axe handle. Bret makes the comeback and now focuses on Singh's back to get some retribution. He hits a side Russian legsweep followed by a backbreaker. Piledriver is just for good measure. Bret wins with the Boston Crab.

Winner - Bret Hart (NWA Stampede North American Heavyweight Champion) @ 15:29 with the Boston Crab.

Post match, Stan Hansen appears in the aisle way, swinging the bullrope around in the air. Neidhart leaves ringside to confront Hansen, which allows Jerry Blackwell to run in and attack Bret Hart. When he sees this, Neidhart forgets Hansen and runs back to the ring to save Hart, but he is jumped by Two Men in Black Ski Masks. Blackwell puts the chair around Bret's ankle, as the two masked men and Gama Singh hold him down. Blackwell looks to go for the big splash to injure Hart, but Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith make the save to run off the heels. As they retreat to the locker room, Jerry Blackwell holds up Jimmy Hart's big bag of money to end the show.

The SmarT 24/7 Rant for NWA Stampede Wrestling’s “Supercard in Vancouver” – July 21, 1983

- Oh my. I've been waiting forever for this territory and era to debut on 24/7.

- Taped from Vancouver, BC.

- A bit of an infamous show right here, as this was the first super show the promotion ran after the Big Wrestling Shake-Up of 1983, where all the major promoters came together and drafted talent to each territory. It’s also the first card booked by Bruce Hart, who became notorious for the poor business decisions he made in the early stages of running the company.

- Case-in-point: This show. You see, Bruce had advertised a main event featuring NWA World Champion Harley Race defending against WWF’s Andre the Giant. Sounds great on paper, right? Only problem is Bruce forgot to clear the booking with Vince McMahon. So when Andre didn’t make the event, Bruce shoehorned local favorite Dino Bravo (a face in Vancouver, but a tweener working a mobster gimmick in Stampede) into the title match, putting Race over strong and elevating Bravo to the main event picture in one fell swoop. For all his bad money-losing choices on the business end of things, Bruce was still rock solid when booking the in-ring product.

- Bruiser Brody also no-showed this card, so Jerry Blackwell stepped up as Stan Hansen’s partner.

The Invaders vs. Mike Hammer & David Morgan.

The Invaders are of course on loan from Puerto Rico and debuting here in Stampede. Morgan and Hammer were a pretty solid job team for a few months before Hammer struck gold with the Dr. Blood gimmick and Morgan came to his own as a worker. This match isn’t much, but the jobbers put the heels over strong. *1/2

- Bruce Hart and Keith Hart are out to announce the changes to the main event and tag team title matches. After Bruce makes the announcement, they are jumped by 2 guys wearing black masks who I believe in kayfabe were sent by Jimmy Hart.

NWA Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Championship: The Cobra vs. Matt Borne

Oh man, this is where it’s at. Cobra is fresh off of winning the belt as a result of Bruce and Keith Hart leaving to actually work for Vancouver at this time. Matt Borne is fresh off of a big loss to Curt Hennig and both guys are being pushed strongly. JIP to about 12 minutes in. Just a great back-and-forth contest with Cobra gaining the advantage with his speed and eventually winning with a moonsault. Yeah, you want all of this. So ahead of its time. ***

Dynamite Kid & Davey Boy Smith vs. The Tokyo Hurricanes

God, I love NWA 24/7. They’re not-quite the British Bulldogs yet, having only started team about a month prior. The Hurricanes of course are the Japanese heel stable of Stampede and they always put on decent matches. This isn’t nearly as good as it could be and they would have better matches later, but this is sort of their first big match so it has a screwy finish. This was pretty common in the 80’s, as they had to build the feud up to get people into the building for the next show. Bulldogs lose after Davey gets hit with a kendo stick. Short but sweet.**

- Stu Hart announces that Bruce and Keith will wrestle the masked men later in the show.

2/3 Falls for the NWA Stampede North American Heavyweight Championship: Bret Hart vs. Curt Hennig

More good goodness. Of course we’re JIP to the third fall about 20 minutes in but this looks incredible. Both guys are pretty beat up by this point and geezus does Bret look lanky. Curt’s not much beefier, but his work is a bit more advanced than Bret’s at this point. Bret wins with a roll up and Curt is not happy but shakes hands anyway. Can’t really give this a rating since so much was not shown. Call it **.

- Intermission.

NWA Stampede International Tag Team Championship: The Dungeon Masters vs. Stan Hansen & Jerry Blackwell

Did someone say goofy 80’s tag team gimmicks for $500? Enter the Dungeon Masters, Jim Neidhart and Mr. Hito, working a Road Warriors gimmick with a bad name. You see, Mr. Hito was a trainer at the Hart Dungeon and Bruce Hart thought this team needed a money gimmick, so he gave them helmet and armor to wear to the ring. You can’t make this stuff up people. Not one of the better examples of Bruce’s booking prowess to be honest. This match starts out somewhat incredible though, as Hansen comes out swinging the bullrope and Blackwell was over with the Stampede crowd since he was being paid by Jimmy Hart to take out the Harts. One the match proper gets started though, things slow down and Hansen and Neidhart work some nice power struggles, but Hito just can’t hang with these guys. This goes on wayyyy too long and eventually it looks like Neidhart is going to pin Blackwell when Hansen comes in for the bullrope to draw the DQ at something like 25 minutes. Yeah, let’s show this in full and splice up the Hennig-Hart match. Okay then. DUD

Keith Hart & Bruce Hart vs. The Masked Men

This of course the result of one of the best Stampede angles of all time, as Jimmy Hart came in from All Star Wrestling to start a territory feud. I forget the details exactly, but it involved Jimmy Hart swindling a large sum of cash from the Harts and using it to pay guys like Jerry Blackwell and Terry Funk to destroy the Hart Family. Here we have two guys in masks that have been causing trouble on TV for a few weeks finally get a match against the Harts. The match is quick and heated with the masked dudes going over pretty convincingly. I looked through the Spectators from the time, and Smeltzer is reporting the masked men are Jerry and David Novak, the Bounty Hunters, so there you go. This was almost as bad as the previous match. ½*

NWA World Heavyweight Championship: Harley Race vs. Dino Bravo

Probably SmarT to put this on as the sub-main since there was no way in hell Bravo was going over. Crowd is hot somehow even after those last two stinkers. Dino gets a great babyface reaction to put things over the edge. We get a Great Technical Harley Race match with both guys exchanging holds and working hard to gain the upper hand. Bravo really holds his own and looks strong going down to Race after about 20 minutes shown of a 30 minute match. Really high end stuff for the time, and absolutely made Dino as a star in Stampede. Now is when he started working 30 minute draws with Bret around the horn, I believe. ****

No Disqualification Grudge Match: Wahoo McDaniel vs. The Stomper

Time had told that the last match saved the show and made a star out of Bravo, but this was the real draw for the card to begin with. Stomper had been going off about redemption and quoting bible verses for a few weeks, but then crossed spiritual boundaries when he destroyed a sacred Native headdress. An interesting side-note is that Gouldie didn’t destroy Wahoo’s headdress, but rather the headdress of Sonny Two Rivers, a Japanese talent who was working a Native gimmick. Apparently Wahoo was so offended that Bruce had a Japanese wrestler doing an Indian gimmick that he refused to work Stampede unless the gimmick was trashed, so Stomper attacked Sonny Two Rivers on TV , bloodied him with a chain, and killed the gimmick dead. This match is just brutal, btw. Eventually Stomper finds his chain and busts Wahoo open, but Wahoo retaliates with a rawhide leather strap! Both guys get pretty beat up, but Wahoo ends up with Stomper’s chain. Wahoo accidentally misses Stomper with the chain and knocks the ref out cold. He hits Stomper with a big chop using the chain. Visual pin fall, but the ref is still down. Stomper goes down low and gets his chain back. He wraps the chain around his foot and hits a big stomp on Wahoo’s midsection from the top rope. Ref is awake now. Stomper gets the win. Just a sick brawl and thankfully we got the full 14 minutes on tape. ***3/4

Afterwards, both guys are a bloody mess and Wahoo looks visibly disappointed. Stomper goes to destroy Wahoo’s headdress, but McDaniel makes the comeback, gets his leather strap and heat back. I know the two had a few Chain Matches and Indian Strap Matches around this time that didn’t make tape but sound AMAZING.

The Pulse

Sort of a mixed bag here, but totally worth it all for the historical context. Stampede started taping this super shows in July 1983, so we should see a lot more of these pop up on 24/7 soon. A lot of this stuff is clipped to hell, but the NWA title match and the main event are both going out of your way to see. And the Stampede-All Star feud was pretty hot around this time. Mildly recommended.

Interesting format for the big show. I like the references to Smeltzer. :) Main was great and Bret vs. Hennig was about right. I like the tag feud you have going as well with the Bulldogs. Hansen/Blackwell in a DUD is so very wrong. What is Bruce Hart DOING?
