Atlas vs Gino

We start with an interview with Atlas. Race interrupts and gets pressed over Atlas's head. We go to the match and this is a boatload of fun. Gino is full of charisma here. He is so great bumping and stooging for Atlas. Gino got all of Tony's stuff over. This wasn't just a one man show though. Atlas showed a lot of athleticism. Atlas took the match 2 out of 3 falls. This was so entertaining. This was worked totally different than the Atlas-Boc match, but worked just as well. 3 1/4*

Mansfield vs Conway was very solid. Mansfield was that great sort of stooging sleazy heel in the Rip Rogers mold, but I swear his offense came by way of early 80s Randy Savage. He spent much of the first two falls flying off the second rope and even hit a sort of hangman's noose clothesline (slingblade-y) towards the end. Conway was as solid as ever as the sort of athletic local hero with a good punch and who could get a lot of sympathy. They even did a Savage/Steamboat roll up exchange at the end, but it was more novel because it was sloppier, with more of a sense of struggle.

David vs Gino

This was easily on of the better DVE matches I've seen. This is the DVE that was a blue chipper and future NWA champ. Of course he's working Gino so that couldn't hurt. In the 1st fall DVE's arm work is really good and focused. Gino was great at eating all of the arm. I loved the finish with David dropping 3 knees from the top onto Gino. The 2nd fall sees Gino go after David's arm with revenge spots. The 3rd falls finish was incredible. We see Tiger come out and throws ink in Gino's eyes for the pin. This was a tremendous match 3 3/4*

Mansfield vs Conway Jr.

I'm totally with Matt D. Right off the bat with Mansfield's bump and taking the arm drag I totally got a Randy Savage vibe mixed in with some Dynamite Kid. Then I thought he could have been a big time player in a tag team with Buddy Rose, Tom Pritchard,Rip Rogers or Ken Timbs.

The 1st fall was fun but lacked a narrative. Now the 2nd fall we get a narrative. Mansfield starts to work the back. This was done pretty well. In the 3rd fall Conway has a fiery comeback. Then in revenge spots goes after the back. This begins to feel like these guys had too much time to fill. The match goes off the air while in progress.

Clearly, Mansfield looked pretty damn good. I think he would be great in a 15 -20 minute match.

Cornette was talking about Mansfield on something I listened to explaining the thing where Mansfield went on 20/20 and "exposed" the business. Cornette said Mansfield had pretty much gotten blacklisted but not for anything that he said on the show but because he was a guy who would frequently no show. So once he'd gotten fired from a few places for it the word got around to other promoters and no one wanted to bring in a guy at his level with a history of not being reliable. Personally, I always liked him in what I've seen of him and think he's a pretty good promo. Was one of the guys I managed to snag late in the 1983 draft.

One of the best things about the site is getting more of a 360 view on certain wrestlers we've only had bits and pieces of before. Conway, Jr. is someone I think we're not quite there on yet. I think so far he's been better in shorter matches and in tag matches as he's charismatic, has a connection with the crowd, and a certain effectively awkward athleticism that I'd almost call Greg Gagne-ish in the best ways, but longer 2/3 falls singles matches don't always hold together.

No one should be faulted for not being able to have a good match with Billy Graham or Ichiban though.

I am really enjoying the discussion on here and happy you are enjoying the site. Uploads have been slower than usual because we are truly gearing up to launch that Roku app soon. We have almost 300 matches ready to release on Roku.

Also - this Saturday is the day of our physical relocation of the hard drives to Colorado. That will take a couple of days in transit / couple of days in setup - but the transition should be smooth.

Had an awesome Press Conference in Tokyo on Saturday where we discussed NWAOnDemand.com extensively and will be launching a website in Japan soon. And every fan who attended the Diamond Stars event got a classic photo of Giant Baba and me on my first trip to Japan in 1982 - with the website printed on the back in Japanese. So we hope to spike subscriptions in Japan.

I will possibly be returning to Hiroshima in November - and most likely have another Press Conference there to promote the site.

Jim arrived today in Colorado Springs. Uploads should resume this week! Thanks for your patience.

Please understand I mean this in the most respectful manner possible but...

The pace of uploads the last couple months has not been close to what was promised. I appreciate that the Roku app somehow got in the way - though I fail to see how - but that's small comfort to those of who don't care about the Roku.

Love the service, Bruce, but please do better.

I didn't think too much of Madril in the Slater match and it certainly had issues structurally (like no ending while still trying to make Madril look strong which only worked a little bit in execution though they get points for creative effort). He was fairly young here (27?). I actually like him more paired with Lothario a few years later as sort of a beloved local babyface who doesn't take crap. Slater was electric. Watching him in an armbar was hugely entertaining. Even Boesch said he patterned himself after Terry Funk (and this is in 78), but I'm perfectly fine with a guy patterning himself after one of the most entertaining, engaging wrestlers ever. Unfortunately, I don't think there's too much more from this 78 run for Slater, but I'd be very curious to see the (babyface, I think) Gino match that followed this.

Obviously, I'm hugely looking forward to any Murdoch and Lothario interaction. (Btw, for the results page: we've got Leroy Brown instead of Murdoch on a show main evented by Fritz vs Krupp. Murodch is way more interesting. Not sure if it's the same show or a different one. If it's the same, then Idol vs Conway Jr, David vs Gino, Dale Valentine vs Barry Orton, and Gary Young vs Jay Youngblood were on the undercard.).

I uploaded the rest of the California Championship Wrestling I had to youtube today and found a match with Jose Lothario against Gran Goliath where Jose had suddenly grown a full head of hair again in 1986. I really can't even make fun of him for it because he looks about 10 years younger in that match than he does in the 1984 stuff on NWA On Demand. Here is a link for anyone who cares to check it out, match starts at 3:50

DICK MURDOCH and KILLER BROOKS vs. JOSE LOTHARIO and AL MADRIL - for the Texas Tag Belts! Two out of Three Falls - from 1978. Paul Boesch on commentary!

Gary Hart is with the heels, and this is by far the best he's looked in the footage. Hart has never been about the bumps to me. He's been about his projection of Evil. The crowd here is insanely hot for this match. Like nuclear and the heels know how to stoke that flame.

In the 1st fall we get an early shine. The heels cut Lothario off and just beat him down. Here it's really neat. Instead of hope spots, Lothario gets hope punches. This was really neat. He gets a hot tag to Madril and shows some fire.He gets cut off and they just destroy the leg. Madril is just worked over for a bit. He hot tags to Lothario and the crowd erupts, then goes silent when Murdoch just nails him with a punch. This leads to the finish,

The 2nd fall the faces score a quick flash pin. The heels protesting here really puts it over.

The 3rd fall and the crowd heat is nuclear. The heels just get mega heat and beat on the faces. The crowd erupts when Madril spears Hart. Faces go over, and the crowd goes crazy. Heels post match attack the champs .

This was just great stuff. Murdoch and Lothario really shined in the match. 4 1/4*
