shoe
We start with a Chavo interview where he's in humble babyface mode.He even gives Mr. Boesch a jar of salsa from his dad. We go to the match and this was worked perfectly. This is a Mexican Death Match. We start slow and methodical. Hector out wrestling Lothario early. Just one upping him early. This was paced perfectly . So when it was time to become violent it hit the switch. It then morphs into this bloody hate filled brawl. Both guys are bloody. Both guys working the cut. Then we get the finish . Both guys can't make the count. The ref declares the winner is who gets to his feet 1st. Both guys are getting up. Jose ko's Hector and the ref. To the crowd they see him as the winner.Chavo tosses salsa in Lothario's eyes. He crumbles. The ref sees Hector up and declare him the winner. What a great match, with incredible psychology. Then we get a great Guerrero post match promo. Just wow. This was just incredible all around . 4*
Eduardo
Love how Hector Guerrero turns it up with some headbutts to transition to start brawling. He then immediately rams Jose Lothario's head into the post to draw blood. Lothario later returns the favor, posting Guerrero as well to bust him wide open. Love Lothario's punches, they are incredible. Guerrero's selling of them are great too. Lothario has such a great left. The Chavo Guerrero promo afterwards was pretty wild and frames this feud with the same narrative of the epic Juan Manuel Marquez vs Juan Diaz "Fight of the Year" for 2009 (which also took place in Houston). Hector looks like he's been to war during this post-match interview. Awesome presentation from beginning to end. This was so great.
Phil Schneider
Although listing this as "The Beginning of the Feud" is a little misleading, this was the Mexican Death match blowoff, not the beginning
shoe
I think it was more of the start of the Lothario vs Guerrero Family feud.
goc
I loved the escalation from straight wrestling to brawling in this one. Jose is so clearly past his prime but still brings great punches & selling to the table and it makes you wish you could see some early 70s Jose footage to see him when he had more in the tank. The ref bump in this was pretty silly but I liked the finish and the interview afterwards. Really good stuff here.
Jetlag
The previous match was a chaotic, violent eruption. Here, Chavo had sat Lothario down and they shook hands before the match. So, this starts out with Jose and Hector wrestling with all good clean wrestling exchanges while Paul Boesch puts over Chavo's hot sauce. That weird beginning aside, this soon gets surely when Hector gets frustrated by Jose one-upping him. Hector starts the fun attacking Jose with some nasty side headbutts before quickly drawing blood with the steel ringpost and it's ON. The match quickly turns into the kind of gritty double juice massacre you want. It's pretty much impossible to have a bad match with even old flabby Jose Lothario in that situation. Jose was pretty great here as a tank with nothing but punches as offense, giving this the flair of a gritty seeding boxing match, while Hector used more standard wrestling offense that still looked good. Probably had a bit too many falls and was not quite the wild brawl I expected, but this was psychologically very sharp justifying the methodic nature of the match and let to a cool/silly finish (nice foreshadowing there Boesch) that got awesome reactions. Great little bloodbath.
