Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling begins from Sumter, South Carolina with Bob Caudle and David Crockett running down the day's card, with the two feature matches of Greg Valentine vs. Michael Hayes and a huge eight man tag consisting of The Russians vs. Terry Gordy, Buddy Roberts, Hector Guerrero, & Terry Taylor previewed. They reveal that Harley Race will appear on a taped Rogers Corner, David Schultz will defend his U.S. Title and that Scott Casey and The Tonga Kid will be in action.

Before the first match, Michael Hayes hits the booth to chat with Bob & David before his main event match with "The Hammer" today. While giving some lip service to that big match, Hayes also reveals he still hasn't heard anything about who Harley Race is defending his NWA Title Belt against on tonight's show in Greensboro and again throws out a challenge. Caudle says that he'd assume that Race may reveal that later in the show on his taped interview with Buddy Rogers, but that it'd be a real shame if Race didn't consider Hayes a top challenger.

MATCH #1

The Tonga Kid vs Ben Alexander

(A pure spotlight match for Tonga who pulls out the crowd pleasing high flying dropkicks and armdrags as well as some quintessential South Pacific chops and headbutts. Caudle mentions that Tonga will be appearing in Louisiana at Mid-South Wrestling's Superdome Extravaganza tonight as part of a talent agreement with Jim Crockett and Bill Watts and that the extra experience will only help him grow as a star in training. Alexander gets no offense, but sells very well as Tonga finishes the match with a headbutt from the top at 4:24.)

The Tonga Kid soaks up the cheers with a celebratory top rope backflip and begins to head to the back only to run smack into "Cowboy" Scott Casey who is making his way down for his own spotlight match coming up next. Casey spits some tobacco in Tonga's face, but before Tonga can fire back with some hands, officials and refs rush down to keep the men apart. On commentary Caudle reveals that in addition to Tonga Kid, Scott Casey will also be appearing at the Superdome against none other than the legendary Mr. Wrestling II and that it's very important that both Tonga and Casey stay as healthy as possible, hence the "easier" matchups on TV this week and the immediate halt to any fighting just now.

MATCH #2

"Cowboy" Scott Casey vs. Rudy Diamond

(Already a bad tempered guy, Casey is in rare form stomping a mudhole as the cameras come back from the break. He tosses Diamond around and sends him sprawled onto the middle rope before running and jumping on him. Casey jaws at the crowd and makes some comments to the camera as he continues his mauling, eventually picking up the win at 3:53.)

We return from break with a taped Rogers Corner playing with Buddy Rogers joining NWA World Champion Harley Race at his mansion in Kansas City, Missouri with Greg Valentine also sitting in. Rogers spends a minute heaving praise on both men before asking Race about current challengers and future plans. Race names Rick Martel, Kerry Von Erich, Paul Orndorff, and Chavo Guerrero as his top challengers and makes sure to give every man at least some compliments, even if a few were backhanded. Valentine makes his first vocal appearance by bringing up Ric Flair in a derisive manner and Race responds in kind saying that Flair was struggling against a retired guy like Terry Funk and that he has no doubt Valentine will cripple him in Greensboro ending any sort of "Flare For The Gold" and that "The Gauntlet" will end quicker than they thought. Rogers throws in that if somehow Valentine gets bested, the next group of guys waiting around the corner will make Flair wish he'd given up a lot sooner. Finally Rogers asks Race who he will defend against in Greensboro, bringing up Michael Hayes as a possibility only for Race to scoff and say that due to a lack of suitable opponents in Mid-Atlantic, he will only be appearing in a non-wrestler capacity to congratulate Valentine after his win in the main event.

David Crockett is upset as we return to the studio, unable to form complete thoughts due to the insult Race threw at the Crockett promotion. Caudle tries to carry on and introduces a clip to set up the next match, from two weeks ago as Joe Lightfoot and Billy Two Eagles upset The Vachons.

MATCH #3

Butcher Vachon vs. Joe Lightfoot

(Caudle reminds fans that the two teams will face each other in a rematch tonight in Greensboro (as Eagles and Mad Dog second their respective partners at ringside), but that notion seems hilarious as Lightfoot can barely inflict any damage on the much bigger Vachon. Eagles tries to cheerlead for Lightfoot, but Butcher slows down the pace with clubbering blows to the back and quickly cutting off any attempts at offense by Lightfoot. At one point Butcher sends Lightfoot into the ropes and hits him with a Hot Shot, dropping him neck first on the top rope as he runs back. He picks Lightfoot up for the Hangman's Hold, but quickly drops him to gloat with Mad Dog spurring him on. He again picks Lightfoot up for the Hold, but drops it after two seconds to gloat once more and taunt Eagles. Finally he picks Lightfoot up a third time, but drops him after three seconds to give Mad Dog a big hug on the apron. As the brothers prematurely celebrate, Lightfoot jumps up, hits the opposite rope and nails Butcher with a dropkick, sending the brothers into each other and knocking each for a loop as Lightfoot is able to get an upset pin at 6:34 to the delight of Eagles and the crowd.)

Following the match, the Native American duo celebrate and head to the back while Butcher and Mad Dog try to shake off the collision. Once recovered, they are furious and start throwing a big tantrum around ringside, pulling out chairs and other tools from the under the ring and slamming them against the ring posts. Butcher heads to the timekeeper's table and slams both fists down causing the table to shatter and fall causing a collective gasp from the crowd. At that the French Canadians finally head to the back as Crockett and Caudle make sure to steer clear.

We return from the break with Doug Vines in the ring for a title match against David Schultz.

MATCH #4

NWAUS-1.png

NWA UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP
"Dr. D" David Schultz © vs. Doug Vines

(As the match starts, Crockett reveals that his brother did not want Schultz and the Sheik to have another brawl before their big match tonight so he bought out an entire gym for the day to give Sheik a private workout space in exchange for him staying away from the taping. Caudle adds that the animosity between the two men has reached a boiling point and some might consider the US Title match in Greensboro to be the "real" main event now that Race has refused to wrestle.

A quick showcase for Schultz who's brawling style is a bit more haphazard than "Cowboy" Scott Casey's, as he almost looks like he's making his moves up on the fly, only looking to inflict as much damage as possible while doing it. He ducks under a Vines clothesline and comes off the ropes with a Lou Thesz press before peppering Vines with rights and lefts until the ref makes him break at five. At the end he hits a nice clothesline before climbing to the second rope for a diving corkscrew elbow for the victory at 5:25.)

Schultz joins Bob & David to reiterate that while he's more interested in the "title" part of the "United States title", that doesn't mean he won't do everything in his power to ensure the title stays in the U.S. and is not taken over by Iran. He calls the Sheik a slick oilman and says there just ain't no room in this country for the likes him and that he should go back home and wrestle street urchins for Iraqi gold. Caudle quickly thanks him and sends him off as the four fan favorites in the 8-man tag make an appearance with the commentators to prepare for the next match.

The Fabulous Freebirds represented by Gordy and Roberts start with Gordy saying he'll do everything in his power to control himself so that he doesn't break Ivan Koloff's neck in the next match, ruining their big TV title match in Greensboro. Roberts pats him in the back and says he has faith in good ol' Bam Bam, and that he'd appreciate Gordy looking out for him as well to make sure he doesn't break Krusher Kruschev's shoulder. Both Freebirds shake hands and agree to fight the other man's battle this morning so that they save all their aggression for tonight.

Guerrero and Taylor chime in next with Taylor saying they've never felt more cohesive as a team, their confidence is at an all-time high, and that they plan on showing the Mid-Atlantic fans a fun and thrilling match tonight as they go for the gold. Before he's finished, Hector butts in to agree, but spends more time talking up the "Guerrero name" than on his partnership with Taylor. In contrast to Taylor's more subdued promo, Hector is extremely energetic, to the point where the Freebirds look completely baffled and almost annoyed at his over-the-top babyface-ness. Finally, all four men hit the ring to await their Russian opponents.

MATCH #5

Terry Gordy, Buddy Roberts, Hector Guerrero, & Terry Taylor vs. The Russians (Ivan Koloff, Krusher Kruschev, Nikolai Volkoff, & Chris Markoff)

(Nonstop action here, as even the sluggishness of some of the Russians didn't come into play due to frequent tags by both sides. As agreed upon before, the Freebirds tried their best to avoid their upcoming singles opponents, leading to a couple of entertaining extended moments where they had to fight the urge to lockup and with Koloff or Kruschev and tag out instead. The faces controlled for the first five minutes until Hector was pushed to the floor by Koloff as he attempted a springboard clothesline on Volkoff. This led to a period of him being the face-in-peril with each Russian taking a turn to hit some tough power moves as the faces urged Guerrero to stay alive. At one point Koloff rode Guerrero down from the corner to the mat with a knee to the back of the head, only for Gordy to break up the pin. Roberts quickly pulled "Bam Bam" back to the corner, holding up his end of the deal.

Finally, after an extended beating, Guerrero shocked the Russians by back flipping out of an attempted backbreaker rack by Volkoff, landing on his feet, and hitting Vokoff with a desparate dropkick. He made the hot tag to Gordy who went wild on the Russians until Koloff came in and he paused. He took a second to think about it and then decided to nail Koloff anyway to the cheer of the crowd. He tagged in Roberts who did the same to Kruschev, tossing him through the middle ropes to the floor. The ending came when Markoff ducked under a Guerrero crossbody attempt, but was then immediately nailed with a Taylor flying forearm for the pin at 14:52)

Before the main event, Tony Schiavone entered the ring and ran down the card for the Greensboro show.

Ric Flair vs. Greg Valentine

NWA United States Title - David Schultz vs. The Iron Sheik

NWA TV Title - Terry Gordy vs. Ivan Koloff

NWA World Tag Team Titles - Nikolai Volkoff & Chris Markoff vs. Terry Taylor & Hector Guerrero

Buddy Roberts vs. Krusher Kruschev

Joe Lightfoot & Billy Two Eagles vs. The Vachons

Schiavone reminds the fans that NWA World Heavyweight Champion Harley Race will also appear in what he claims is a non-wrestling capacity and with that he introduces "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair to the ring. Flair styles and profiles down and cuts his typical A+ promo building up his match with Valentine before changing subjects to Race and Rogers. Flair excitedly reveals to the fans that NWA President/MACW owner Jim Crockett is on his way to the building with an official announcement of what his champion Harley Race will be doing at tonight's show. And with a final "Whooo!" we head to the main event.

Before Hayes and Valentine entered the ring, Caudle and Crockett revealed that in addition to tonight's big show in Greensboro, Sunday night in Raleigh will see two huge main event matches with Ric Flair and David Schultz teaming against The Vachons and The Iron Sheik facing The Tonga Kid, with the U.S. Title on the line if he should win it tonight. Caudle also announces that next week's TV will see a number one contenders tag match with the Midnight Express returning to Mid-Atlantic to face a pair of Freebirds.

MATCH #6

Greg Valentine vs. Michael Hayes

(Both men are surprisingly alone and start the match with a feeling out process. Valentine takes an early advantage locking in an armbar, but Hayes wiggles free and pops Valentine in the face with a right hand, causing Valentine to roll outside to regroup. The match continues in this vein for a few minutes until Valentine is able to reverse a Hayes suplex and quickly drop a pointed elbow to Hayes' midsection. He begins to work on Hayes' leg, but when attempting the Figure-Four, Hayes kicks him off into the corner and rolls him up for a close two.

Both men control portions as the match goes on with neither able to take a distinct advantage until Valentine backdrops Hayes over the top to the floor. The ref considers calling for the DQ, but Valentine is able to convince him it was a reflex in response to Hayes running at him and is able to take advantage by tossing Hayes into the ringpost outside. A period of holds like the Indian Deathlock and legdrops to Hayes' legs follow with Valentine coming close to victory on a piledriver only for Hayes to get his foot on the ropes.

Finally Valentine locks in the Figure-Four and Hayes fights valiantly for almost a minute trying to claw to the ropes only for Valentine to pull him back to the center. In desperation, Hayes is able to turn it over, reversing it and causing Valentine to break. Hayes fights his way to his feet and gets a second wind, peppering Valentine with punch after punch, pausing to do a moonwalk, before popping Valentine with one more punch for good measure, causing Valentine to flop face first in the ring. Hayes hits a bulldog as Valentine gets up and then grabs him for the DDT, only for Valentine to push him into the corner to break. Valentine backs off and Hayes charges back out, but Valentine grabs him and sends him over the top, this time for a DQ called at 18:43)

The Freebirds rush out to help Hayes up as Valentine stumbles to the back, hands raised high in a victory pose. Suddenly, Jim Crockett is at the booth with the mic and he announces that he has made a decision based on the results of the main event. Since Michael Hayes was able to defeat Greg Valentine, he is signing Hayes to a NWA World Title match with Harley Race tonight in Greensboro, despite what Race claimed earlier!

Buddy Rogers rushes out followed by Valentine and argues frantically, but Crockett won't budge as the show goes off the air with David Crockett screaming "Flair vs. Valentine! Schultz vs. Sheik! Hayes vs. Race! Tonight in Greensboro!".

MACW SEPTEMBER SUPERSHOW

Greensboro Coliseum, Greensboro North Carolina

September 24th, 1983

The Vachons (Mad Dog & Butcher) defeated Joe Lightfoot & Billy Two Eagles in 8:25 after the Vachons sandwiched Lightfoot with a double running headbutt followed by Mad Dog pinning him with a powerslam. The Native Americans had some moments of hope, but once the Vachons realized this wouldn't be a typical squash and slowed the action down, they were able to use their superior power and experience to control the remainder of the match.

Krusher Kruschev defeated Buddy Roberts in 10:04 by making him submit to a chickenwing over the shoulder crossface. Both men went after each others' shoulders with Roberts getting the early advantage by ducking out of the way of a Kruschev spear to the corner, causing Kruschev to hit the post. Lots of trading holds, but the end for Roberts came when Kruschev pushed his way out of the setup for the DDT and quickly hit a single arm DDT of his own on Roberts' recovering shoulder before locking in a submission. Kruschev wrestled fair and clean (other than targeting Roberts' shoulder) again proving he can still be effective without cheating and help from his Russian allies.

NWAWTag.png

NWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

The Russians (Volkoff & Markoff) © defeated Terry Taylor and Hector Guerrero in 13:24 when Volkoff pinned Guerrero following Lenin's Tomb. This was a back-and-forth match with the young high flyers really making the older slower Russians look foolish at times. Taylor almost picked up the win and titles three minutes in with a flying forearm on Markoff out of nowhere, but the pin was broken up. Taylor also played face-in-peril and was subject to much double teaming by the champs, including a spot where Volkoff picked him up over his head in a gorilla press position and dropped him straight down for a backbreaker on Markoff's knee. The end came when Taylor made the tag and Guerrero went wild for a few minutes with dropkicks and a springboard clothesline on both Russians. However, after hitting a slingshot crossbody on Markoff, Guerrero was pushed in front of Volkoff to accidentally take Taylor's desperation flying forearm. Taylor was tossed from the ring by Volkoff and the two Russians hit their finisher for the win to save their titles.

NWATV.png

NWA WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

Terry Gordy © defeated Ivan Koloff in 14:02 with a powerbomb. Big action brawl with these two trading big move after big move. Koloff hit the Russian Sickle two minutes in only for Gordy to pop up and hit his own Tornado Lariat before both men collapsed. Back up, Koloff nailed Gordy with a couple of suplexes before heading to the second rope for a diving knee drop for a close two count. He continued by working over Gordy's neck, even locking in a full nelson. Gordy was able to push backwards off the turnbuckle to flip over Koloff for another close two count and then he began his comeback with a big boot, leg drop, and a huge Samoan Drop on the "Russian Bear". Koloff went outside and grabbed his chain and swung it at Gordy, but Gordy was able to grab it and pull Koloff in for a back suplex for another close two count. The end came with Koloff taking Gordy to a corner by the hair to come off the top with his knee to the back of Gordy's head, but Gordy was able to stop Koloff's from leaping off the top and instead used that position to hit his own powerbomb instead for the pin.

NWAUS-1.png

NWA UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP

"Dr. D" Dave Schultz © and the Iron Sheik went to a double DQ in 14:52 after both men traded chair shots and Persian Clubs and pushed the referee out of the way to continue brawling without interference. Schultz really took it to Sheik from the start looking to inflict as much damage as possible, but was hit with a couple of nasty looking gutwrench suplexes to slow things down. At one point Sheik untied a turnbuckle and as the referee went to fix it, tossed Schultz over the top. Schultz was outside for three minutes and at one point Sheik teased a diving knee off the top to the floor to the roar of the crowd, but instead hopped down to the apron, walked over to Schultz and kicked him in the face. Eventually Schultz recovered and went back at it with Sheik only for Sheik to grab his Persian Clubs and attempt a mauling, but Schultz was able to block them with a steel chair, after which both me were hit numerous times with their respective weapons until the bell was called by the referee.

NWAWorld.png

NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Harley Race © defeated Michael Hayes by DQ in 20:25 when Hayes accidentally punched referee Sandy Scott. The tough as nails champion was more than a match for the popular Freebird, but Hayes' youth was a distinct advantage as he was able to take Race's strongest moves, including a high knee and belly-to-belly suplex and keep on coming. One memorable spot was the two wrestlers bonking heads, sending Race to the floor outside and Hayes to the mat. As the referee was one second away from declaring Hayes the winner by countout, he stopped the referee and went out to get Race, suplexing him back into the ring for a close two. A DDT by Hayes almost won him the title, but Race got his foot on the ropes. At the end, Race started to get dirty, going low to set up a Fisherman's Suplex for two and then pulling something out of his tights and nailing Hayes for another close two. Finally, Hayes had enough and started peppering Race with punches and as the referee tried to get in between, Hayes nailed anything that moved, knocking Scott down and costing himself the match.

MAIN EVENT

Ric Flair defeated Greg Valentine in 29:01 with the Figure-Four leglock. Flair was surprisingly restrained in the early going as the two men traded holds and moves with very cautious action. Not until Valentine threw a chop did Flair retaliate with ten of his own, causing Valentine to take a breather outside the ring. Back in, a well-placed elbow to the midsection gave Valentine the advantage which he followed up on by sending Flair to the corner. Flair did his trademark flip and ran back across the apron only to get hit with another elbow sending him to the floor. When he came back to the ring, he was bloody and it was apparent the cut impacted his drive as Valentine was able to stay in control with a belly-to-back suplex and numerous elbows to the leg. Valentine tried slipping on the Figure-Four, but was pushed off to the corner, where he hit his head and did a flop of his own. A second try was successful and Valentine was able to keep Flair in the center of the ring for close to two minutes as the crowd roared to pump their hero up. Flair was finally able to reverse it, causing Valentine to break. Back on his feet Valentine tried to keep Flair down with elbows to the head, but Flair was able to push him off, run into the ropes and nail a desperation flying elbow to Valentine's face sending Valentine down with another flop. Flair went for the Figure-Four, but Valentine kicked him into the ropes and was able to roll him up with a handful of tights for a very close two count. With both men showing signs of exhaustion a final chop/elbow battle began with Flair throwing in a poke to the eyes for good measure. Chop blocking Valentine's knee, Flair locked on the Figure-Four and after forty-five seconds, Valentine finally submitted. Flair refused to let go at first, but did so once Harley Race and Buddy Rogers made their way down to the ring. Flair and Race stared each other down, with Rogers keeping them apart. Race and Rogers helped a limping Valentine back to the ring as the Freebirds came down to celebrate with Flair.

Thanks all.

Valentine and Koloff were the last piece of the puzzle to be filled when planning the road to Starrcade out so yeah, very happy to have used them. I'm sure that the Freebirds will have some unfinished with them both down the line as Hayes/Gordy vs. Valentine/Koloff is a main event anywhere.

Things are picking up and I suspect that October will be even bigger as we move on, assuming my outside talent coming in are not impacted by the musical chairs going on with promotion ownership.

If anything I'm more excited by '84 at this point due to programs some of you have already figured out.
