soup23
We have arrived at the first IWA-MS match of the decade and we are Charleston with a big crowd here. This is a one camera shoot on the crows nest. Prazak is leading the heels and Fannin is the face manager which is odd pairings. After the obligatory pre match promos, things break down and it is the type of plunder affair you expect with Rico the ring announcer doing the announcments around 3-4 minutes into the actual match. Ian’s chair shots are absolutely the most vicious I can think of and he delivers a thunderous one here to Terry Bull. Obviously a one camera shoot for a match like this isn’t ideal but there are some moments where it is pretty neat just to see the mayhem that is going on in this garage type building as you see Ian give Terry Bull a DDT on the tacks as a light tube gets used in the background. Blaze and Suicide become the main pairing in the ring and they display some good spots on the tacks including a Sky High Powerbomb and a tornado DDT. Rico does the 10 minute call two minutes after the 5 minute call. Blaze gets set up on a table and Suicide comes off the stage with a flip senton. This type of match is a good spot for Suicide as he hits his spots and gets out of the way. Finale has a flaming table set up in the ring and Terry Boy taking a second rope powerbomb through it to a big pop. I had a lot of fun with this as it was quick, chaotic and the bumps were brutal. ***1/
Loss
I thought this was pretty awesome. After the long entrances and mic work (which I really enjoyed), the match proper wastes no time and gets straight to the point. Despite a couple of crazy spots involving tables, all-in-all, this is a pretty old school affair because of the hate behind the brawling. Ian is Dusty Rhodes and he's WALKING TALL, bringing in a few pals to hold off his chief rival and his cronies. The props were there, but the focus was way more on the brawling, which is always the better approach. ***3/
Moonsault Marvin
I found it difficult to tell who were the wrestlers and who were the spectators other than the Rottens. I liked the complete chaotic feel of the match, and they built to a satisfying end with the flaming table spot. Fun match.
Tim Evans
The entrances and intro mic work went 10 minutes alone. That's indie wrestling, baby. Ian Rotten is still fat as hell here compared to how he was later in 2001. I'm not sure why they had thumbtacks spread in the ring but it's IWA so that's alright. Some nice brawling here including Ian just destroying terry with a chair shot. The crowd is hot throughout including popping huge for the flaming table. Thanks to the crowd and how this wasn't long I liked the match.
AstroBoy
It was indeed hard to discern what specifically was going on but man the crowd was hot for this. Without knowing the context it FELT like a feud that had simmered and come to this point. And they definitely do deliver on big spots in the tacks with some really disgusting huge moves including a tornado DDT onto them. The crowd is rabid for this the whole time and of course they end things with a bang with the big flaming table spot. A concise and spirited brawl with some standout spots and a gruesome finish. This was good stuff.
GSR
I thought Matt Hughes was going to be making an appearance when ‘A Country Boy Can Survive’ kicked in! I then thought Kid Kash was joining us, but it was the Bad Breed coming out to ‘Bawitdaba’. IWA-MS is being filmed by one hard camera with no commentary at this point. It does make it tricky to follow everything that’s going on here, but at the same time you get a real feel for the chaotic, wild nature of the match. The ‘Texas Tornado’ stipulations are used to the full as the six of them brawl around the building. You see the fans scampering to get out the way, and even lose the wrestlers amongst them, only to then spot a chair or weapon being swung. The thumbtacks are spread all over the canvas and the bumps on them are kept to a minimum as the emphasis is more on the brawling. Ian dents a steel chair over Terry’s head with this absolutely vicious chair shot, and the two of them are also the first to take bumps into the thumbtacks. Terry gets DDT’d into them, before blocking a powerbomb and then backdropping Ian into the tacks. Suicide Kid and Blaze follow, with Kid giving him a tornado DDT onto them. Somersault senton off the balcony by Kid putting Blaze through a table in the process. Finish sees Ian superbomb Terry through a flaming table and Kid cover him for the win. Some crazy shit here! Edwin
Chaos. Just pure chaos. The camera work sucks in this and there's no commentary, but the lack of commentary works here because it lets you feel the heat during the entire chaos. I hated the guy laying on top of the table without trying to get off of it, but I dug Suicide Kid diving immediately and not playing to the crowd and taking forever in that table spot. Just a wild brawl all over the small building. ***
TravJ1979
Charlestown is my hometown and I went to a quite a few of these shows. I fail to see what everyone here sees as I thought this was total garbage. IWA in this period is almost 99% pure garbage, but in a weird way, I feel the need to watch them all.
