Mike Awesome vs. Matt Bischoff

 

Despite Bam Bam Bigelow getting the final duke in their feud, Mike Awesome remains a figure of fear on the West Coast. Awesome utterly trampled all over Bischoff , crushing him with power moves and squashing him with the Awesome Bomb. Clearly , it is only a matter of time before the next big impact from Awesome.

 

The Sons Of The Beach (Cannonball Grizz & The Sandman) vs. Jimmy Del Ray & Billy Black

 

The Surfing Superstars have wasted no time in becoming big favorites among the PCW fans, with their fun attitudes and all out offense. Facing off with two members of the Hollywood Heartbreakers, they had the crowd solidly behind them as they took out Del Ray with the Beach Break (Stuff Power Bomb). The Peach Patrol are on the rise and the SoBs are at the crest of that wave.

 

Tournament Of Lions Semi Final Match : Pierre Carl Ouellet vs. Rob Zakowski

 

Up next is the first of two Semi Final Matches in the 1990 Tournament of Lions. PCO has gotten to this point by way of grit and ferocity, while Zakowski has used his speed and incredible moves. Ouellet did everything he could to shut down Zakowski's offense with hard punches and slams, but Zakowski came out of nowhere with a blinding quick spinning knee to the side of the head that took down the Fighting French Canadian and gave the win to the Hexagon member.

 

Interview : Don Coss stands in the ring

 

Coss : Ladies and gentlemen, my next guest is currently the most successful manager in Pacific Coast Wrestling … Jim Cornette!

 

The Louisville Lip is his usual swaggering self as he leads the Midnight Express and the Hollywood Heartbreakers to the ring.

 

Cornette : You can cut out this balloon juice about "currently", Coss! Camp Cornette is on top of the world, as we have been and always will be! The Hollywood Heartbreakers are the team of the future, the Midnight Express are the Trios champs, and Loverboy Dennis can't be stopped as California Champ! We are so amazing, they are running out of teams to send us to beat! I mean, now they are sending this bunch of hockey himbos called the Thrillseekers in the ring with us. Why waste our time? That won't take more than a minute or two. Come on, gentlemen, let's get this over and done with.

 

The Thrillseekers vs. The Midnight Express

 

Cornette couldn't have been more wrong if he had set out to be. Storm and Jericho had clearly heard what he had said, and were completely fired up for this match. The Midnights tried their usual dirty tricks, but they were swiftly shut down by the Thrillseekers. The Express got a few near falls, but could not put them away, and the Thrillseekers were still going strong when the match went to a 15 minute time limit draw. Jericho and Storm were still game to keep going, but Cornette hastily pulled his men from the ring and brought them back to the locker room.

 

Bret Hart vs. Big Vito Lograsso

 

Another of Cornette's men was out for the next match, and he certainly had an uphill climb against the Hitman. The Italian Stallion was not going to roll over against the Canadian superstar, and hit hard and often. Vito gave a strong accounting of himself, fighting off every attempt at the Sharpshooter, but a diving Bulldog Headlock was enough to put him down for the three count. In spite of the loss, Lograsso continues to show what a tough customer he is.

 

Tournament Of Lions Semi Final Match : Chris Hamrick vs. Chris Candido

 

The night closes out with the second Semi Final match, and it was set to be a real barn burner. Both Hamrick and Candido have had strong years, emerging from the Money Train and the Suicide Blondes to have breakout performances in singles matches. The two had a fast paced match that kept the fans on the edge of their seats until Confederate Currency broke out the Franken-Hamrick to get a flash pinfall. The stage was now set. Hamrick would square off with Rob Zakowski in the Tournament Of Lions finals, taking place at Calgary Combat in a few weeks.

Pacific Coast Wrestling show from the LA Sports Arena, Los Angeles, on Pacific Super Cards on ESPN / TSN, September 20th

 

The Dreamboats (Tommy Dreamer & Glamour Boy Shane) vs. Toshiaki Kawada & Chris Adams

 

The League Of Gentlemen seem locked in lately and showed it in this match. Trisa Hayes' men did their best , but Kawada wound up putting them down hard by forcing Shane to tap out to the Kawada Crab.

 

Rick Martel vs. The Lightning Kid

 

The Lightning Kid has shown himself a game competitor, putting his name on the line to face a host of top talent. He put in a very commendable effort against the French Canadian, but Martel has been on top of his game and spotted Kid's attempt at a running cross body press. Martel reversed it with a rollover and got the one two three.

 

The Sandman vs. Brian Lee

 

The Sandman was as feisty as you could imagine, but the Bulldozer was able to put a stop to him with the Prime Time Slam.

 

Golden State Tag Team Title Match : The Force Of July (The Patriot & The Eagle) © vs. Harlem Heat

 

This clash of gladiators was so heated, it wound up spilling to the outside and both sides wound up being counted out as they brawled at ringside.

 

Dan Severn & Stormfront (Al Snow & Jerry Lynn) vs. Ted Dibiase & The Miracle Violence Connection

 

This was a bit peculiar. Severn was looking to get another shot at Dibiase, but seemed to be having a bit of trouble wrangling in Stormfront, who kept going after the MVC. Snow and Lynn proved quite effective, though, riling up Williams and Gordy while staying out of their grip. When Severn was able to get a hold of Dibiase, he was able to do a fair amount of damage on the champ. He ultimately caught the Man Of Means coming off the rope with a single armed Judo throw, then trapped him in a brutal armlock. The MVC came in to break it up, but were met by dual dropkicks by Snow and Lynn. Swiftly realizing help would not be forthcoming     and concerned about getting injured again, Dibiase panicked and tapped out. Severn released the hold the moment the ref made the call, but you could tell he was wishing he could do more damage. He kept giving a puzzled look to Snow and Lynn as they left the ring. Dibiase in turn gave the MVC quite a tongue lashing as they walked away, furious that they hadn't made the save. Williams and Gordy were clearly holding their own tongues, but were scowling as they went back to the locker room.

 

Pacific Television Title Match : Big Bully Busick © vs. Buddy Rose

 

Busick has been having an incredible TV title reign, facing off a host of top level contenders and coming out on top. Tonight, he would be facing the legend of the Pacific Northwest. The Playboy used his considerable guile to keep up with the Man From Powerhouse Hill, but in the end, the champ put rose down for the count with his devastating Spinebuster Slam.

David Cash & Jason Jett vs. Coast 2 Coast (John Tatum & Jack Victory)

 

The Money Train members put in a considerable effort against the former champs, but Coast 2 Coast got the pinfall on Cash with the Coastal Crash (California Kick into the Victory Plex).

 

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Louie Spicolli

 

The Beast From The East took out Spicolli with a Slingshot Splash.

 

Iron & Steel (Tony Atlas & Larry Cameron) vs. The Oregon Wrecking Crew (Gary Albright & David Young)

 

Iron & Steel earned a hard fought victory over the former Golden State Tag Champs, with Atlas hitting a piledriver on Young.

 

Barry Windham vs. Makhan Singh

 

Windham took some bruises from the Monster, but came out on top with a top rope flying lariat.

 

Too Cold Scorpio & The Thunder Dragons (Jushin Liger & Dragon Azul) vs. Art Barr, Eddie Guerrero & Dean Malenko

 

A thrilling Six Man Light Heavyweight duel, with Liger defeating Barr with a top rope flying rana.

 

California Title Match : Dennis Condrey © vs. Steve Blackman

 

Blackman was determined to bounce back after losing the Pacific Submission title to Terry Gordy, and put incredible pressure on Condrey, taking the champ to a 20 minute Time Limit Draw.

Pacific Wrestling Showcase from the Victoria Memorial Arena, Victoria, on ESPN / TSN, October 3^rd

 

Pierre Carl Ouellet vs. David Cash

 

In their rookie year, the Money Train came out to a roaring start. They were the inaugural Pacific Trios champs and quickly won the hearts of the fans. Since then, however, they have experienced something of a downturn in fortunes. While they are still loved by the fans, they lost their titles to the Midnight Express, and while Chris Hamrick's solo success has taken him to the Tournament Of Lions finals, his partners, David Cash and Jason Jett, have not been able to match his momentum. This seemed to weigh on Cash in this match, as he came out looking downcast and his performance was lethargic. This seemed to frustrate Ouellet, and the Fighting French Canadian started calling him out, almost demanding him to prove himself. It got to the point where Ouellet full on slapped Cash in the face. Cash stared at him in shock, Ouellet then slapped him again. Cash responded by slapping back, so Ouellet gave him another slap. Cash was riled enough to fire back with a forearm shot, PCO raised the ante with two more forearms. The match was now truly on, with Cash truly invested and energized. After a brief but fiery bout, Ouellet blocked an attempted Fisherman Suplex and followed up with a Swinging Neckbreaker to get the three count. After the match, Cash wanted to keep after him, but instead, PCO grabbed him in a hug and was vigorously patting him on the back. Cash was clearly surprised, but returned the hug, and soon Ouellet was high fiving the young rookie. When they left the ring, they left together, with PCO talking and Cash listening.

 

The Thrillseekers vs. John Cody & Brad Culpepper

 

The Thrillseekers are also part of the rookie class of 1990, and while they have had their ups and downs, they have never lost their enthusiasm and high spirits. Their boisterous good humour was on full display in this match, and the fans loved them for it. They easily handled Cody and Culpepper, dispatching Cody with a double dropkick. The Thrillseekers are clear a team with a big future in PCW.

 

Glamour Boy Shane vs. Eddie Guerrero

 

1990 has proved to be a breakout year for the Hexagon, coming in at the top of the year and always staying very much in people's minds as a dangerous but exciting assemblage. Other members of the Sinister Minister's crew have perhaps been taking a higher profile, but Eddie Guerrero has remained a threat in the Light Heavyweight division. Shane did all he could to hold him off, but Guerrero was on his game, pulling out the win with a Frog Splash. Even though the Light Heavyweight Title may be in the hands of Guerrero's partner, Art Barr, it might not be too long before Eddie makes his own run for the belt.

 

Too Cold Scorpio vs. Chris Candido

 

Candido may have lost last week in the Semi Final Match of the Tournament Of Lions Tournament, he has impressed many with his performances. His singles matches have reminded people what a stand out Light Heavyweight champion he was, and he gave everyone another reminder in this match. Taking on the always bold Too Cold Scorpio, the two put on a match with plenty of big moves, and Candido got the win with a spinning side slam. Another standout showing from the Blonde Bombshell.

 

Rick Martel vs. Toshiaki Kawada

 

1990 is also going to be known as the year Kawada broke away from his Phoenix Rising team and become one of the truly terrifying competitors on the West Coast. He came out hot against Martel, but the French Canadian legend was unfazed and battled back. No matter what Kawada tried, Martel matched him , move for move. Kawada kept trying to get Martel down in a Stretch Plum or Kawada Crab, but Martel was always able to frustrating him, often by grabbing the ropes. Kawada eventually took out his frustrations on the ref, taking him down with a spin kick to the head after one rope break too many. He then continued his assault on the downed ref until Martel pulled him off, and Chris Adams rushed out to the ring to drag off Kawada. It looks like Adams might have a bit of a discipline problem in the League Of Gentlemen, and you can bet that Commissioner Dutch Savage is going to have something to say about it.

Tommy Dreamer vs. Big Vito Lograsso

 

The Italian Stallion showed why he is the enforcer for Jim Cornette , battering Dreamer before finishing him off with the Sicilian Smash (running forearm smash to the face).

 

Sgt. Slaughter vs. Billy Black

 

You can tell that Slaughter was wishing he was getting his hands on Genichiro Tenryu, but he made do with forcing Black to submit to the Cobra Clutch.

 

The Sons Of The Beach (Cannonball Grizz & The Sandman) vs. Harlem Heat

 

Harlem Heat stole the win from the Sons when Stevie Ray clobbered Grizz from behind with a slapjack, leaving him vulnerable to a running legdrop from Booker T.

 

Pacific Submission Title Match : Terry Gordy © vs. Shinya Hashimoto

 

Hashimoto gave Gordy a considerable challenge to Gordy, doing a fair amount of damage with some single arm takedowns and armlocks that Gordy had to fight hard to escape. Gordy was able to force Hash to submit to the Asiatic Spike , but he was clearly protecting his right arm as he left the ring.

 

Bret Hart vs. Makhan Singh

 

The Hitman signed up for a lot of lumps and bruises from the Monster, but he gave as good as he got. He was able to dodge the Karachi Krunch (Avalanche) and catch Singh with a single arm rollup to get the one two three.

 

Pacific Heavyweight Title Match : Ted Dibiase © vs. Steven Regal

 

These two had a long and gripping technical duel that ultimately went to the champ as he pinned Regal following a Million Dollar Legsweep.

Pacific Coast Wrestling show from the Kelowna Memorial Arena, Kelowna, October 5^th

 

Pacific Trios Title Match : The Midnight Express © vs. Steve Blackman & Stormfront (Al Snow & Jerry Lynn)

 

This was a wild one. Like Dan Severn last week, Blackman found his partners, Snow and Lynn, difficult to rein in. They kept charging in and out of the ring, hitting double team moves and using shortcuts behind the ref's back. If the Midnights were looking to capitalize on their disorganized  opposition, they still had a hard row to hoe in the face of Stormfront's furious attack. Eaton and Condrey were ultimately able to take down Snow with a Double Goozle to continue their title reign. Blackman was clearly showing frustration with Snow and Lynn as they left the ring.

 

Shane Douglas vs. Jimmy Del Ray

 

Douglas kept himself in title contention , defeating the Gigolo with a diving cross body press.

 

The Thunder Dragons (Jushin Liger & Dragon Azul) vs. Sabu & Dean Malenko

 

Another hot match between the Thunder Dragons and the Hexagon, with Sabu and Dean Malenko coming out on top when Malenko power bombed Dragon.

 

Barry Windham vs. Chris Adams

 

This was a crazy brawl that spilled to the outside, with the end result being a double countout.

The masked duo got a very stiff challenge from Tatum and Victory, but came out on top when the Eagle hit the Screaming Eagle (top rope missile dropkick) on Tatum.

 

Pacific Light Heavyweight Title Match : Art Barr © vs. Jason Jett

 

Part way through this match, David Cash and Pierre Carl Ouellet came out and observed from Jett's corner. Jett gave a good accounting for himself, but went down to a Tombstone. After the match, Cash and Ouellet accompanied Jett back to the locker room, with PCO doing a lot of talking to Jett.

Ted Dibiase vs Steven Regal is an interesting match on paper. I'm sure those two gave the fans their money's worth. Martel vs Kawada is a really cool pairing as well.

Super fun stretch of PCW shows. Mike Awesome looked terrifying, the Sons of the Beach stayed over, and the Thrillseekers going time-limit with the Midnights was a legit statement. The Severn–DiBiase tap was a killer angle, Busick keeps cooking as TV champ, and Bret/Regal both delivered clean, classy wrestling. Loved the PCO “tough love” spark for David Cash, plus Guerrero and Candido grabbing momentum in the LHW lane. Kawada’s meltdown gave the League of Gentlemen real drama, while Harlem Heat’s sneaky win and Gordy gutting out Hashimoto added juice to those feuds. Capped off with Coast 2 Coast pushing the champs and Barr retaining as PCO/Cash hovered—tons of hooks rolling into the next week.

Pacific Wrestling Showcase from the Portland Sports Arena, Portland , on ESPN / TSN, October 10^th

 

David Cash vs. David Samson

 

Last week, Cash experienced something of a personal turnaround , thanks to Pierre Carl Ouellet. At a point where it seemed like "Cash Flow's"  sense of self worth and commitment was starting to bottom out, Ouellet kept pushing him during their match until Cash's head was back in the game. The Fighting French Canadian was in Cash's corner for this match, along with his Money Train partners, Jason Jett and Chris Hamrick. Cash had clearly rediscovered his confidence, as well as his zest for the game, as he was all enthusiasm, verve and smooth execution. He easily dominated Samson, putting him away with the Money Maker (double underhook piledriver). PCO and the rest of the Money Train congratulated him on his victory. Ouellet is a bit of an unlikely mentor, but you can't argue with the results.

 

The Dreamboats (Tommy Dreamer & Glamour Boy Shane) vs. Chris Adams & Toshiaki Kawada

 

As the weeks go on, it seems like Kawada is getting progressively more savage and brutal. Last week, Kawada snapped during the match and attacked the ref, for which he was punished with a substantial fine. For this match, Adams was there to ride herd on the Japanese star, and while there were moments where it seemed like Kawada might get out of control, Adams immediately tagged him out. It looked like this would go to the Dreamboats when Dreamer locked Adams in the Dream Weaver (sleeper hold), but Kawada was able to lure Shane into entering the ring. While the ref made Shane get back on the ring apron, Kawada snuck in and nailed Dreamer in the back of the head with a roundhouse kick. When Dreamer collapsed to the mat, Adams fell on top of him and the ref made the three count. As they left the ring, Adams seemed well pleased with Kawada's performance.

 

Interview : Don Coss stands in the ring

 

Coss : Ladies and gentlemen, my next guests comprise several of the most technically accomplished wrestlers on the west coast … the Citadel.

 

The fans cheer as Dan Severn, Steve Blackman, Shane Douglas, Nick Busick, Al Snow and Jerry Lynn head out to the ring. None of them seem happy, but Dan Severn is scowling deeply, while Snow and Lynn have rather petulant looks on their faces.

 

Coss : Dan Severn, while the Citadel continue to experience success, I am not sensing a lot of harmony in the ranks.

 

Severn : Astute observation, Don. Al, Jerry … I am concerned. One of the trademarks of the Citadel is discipline, but lately you guys have been all over the place. You haven't been coordinating with the other members, and have been cutting corners in the matches. This isn't what I have taught you. What gives?

 

Lynn : Look, we don't need you to mother henning us all of the time. We're former tag team champions, we know what we are doing.

 

Severn : Quick reminder that *you* are not a former tag team champion! That was Al and Alex! (Lynn and Snow look annoyed) Do I need to remind you what happened to Alex? He and Al got out of control, just like you guys are getting, and he was forced to leave PCW! And now you are heading down the same path, and I am not going to let you go any further. Did you see what happened with Kawada? The fine he had to pay? I don't see Buddy Rose being likely to pay your fines again, and I am sure not going to. We need all of the Citadel members in synch, working together, and I really need you to follow the game plan.

 

Snow : Well, let me remind you, Danny boy, that we have *not* been fined lately by anyone. We haven't even been DQed. Like Jerry said, we know what we are doing. We know how to go right up to the line and know how to not cross it … at least, not cross it and get caught. (Severn's scowl deepens) But hey, sure. We will do it your way. We will follow your … gameplan. Won't take a single step out of line. Is that satisfactory for you.

 

Severn : Please, Al … just try.

 

Steven Regal vs. Dean Malenko

 

Regal is still a fairly young man of 22, but he has considerable experience in PCW. He is a multi time title holder and a past winner of the Tournament Of Lions. Facing the second generation star Malenko, it would look like this could be the ultimate technical showdown. For the most part , it was. But deep into the match, the Sinister Minister got onto the ring apron, no doubt looking to tip the balance is his man's favor. Not wanting to take any chances, Regal nailed the Sin Min with a rolling forearm smash, sending him to the floor. Malenko capitalized on this with a precision dropkick, sending Regal out as well. Malenko then dove on top of him, and the two continued to throw down until the ref counted them both out. It looked like the brawl might have continued for a while, but the Sin Min ordered his man back and they withdrew to the locker room. I am certain that that this story is far from over.

 

Rick Martel vs. Scotty The Body

 

Scotty has been one of the crown jewels of the Playboy Club ever since his arrival in PCW. He has won multiple titles, been a force to be reckoned with and proved an able lieutenant to Buddy Rose. However, since losing the TV title to Big Bully Busick, Scotty has been slipping in prominence, struggling to get back on a winning path. He was facing an uphill struggle to do so tonight, facing an absolute legend in Rick Martel. He put in a strong effort against Martel, but his attempt to take him out with a Schoolboy Rollup was countered by Martel, who rolled through the move and trapped him in a Quebec Crab. It wasn't long before Scotty was forced to tap out. A tough loss, but we will see if Scotty can bounce back from it.

 

Chris Hamrick & Pierre Carl Ouellet vs. Rob Zakowski & Chris Candido

 

Ouellet and Hamrick were back again, this time for a special tag match between the semi-finalists of the Tournament Of Lions. Ouellet and Hamrick had clearly been training together in the past week, as they put together a well coordinated offense against their opponents. Zakowski and Candido were perhaps not as much in synch, but their individual talent stood them well. This was a highly competitive match, and kept the fans fascinated. In the end, PCO held off Zakowski long enough for Hamrick to hit the Southern Bellringer (second rope piledriver) on Candido for the win. It certainly whet the fans' appetites, but the real battle will be in two weeks at Calgary Combat for the finals of the Tournament Of Lions between Hamrick and Zakowski.

Steve Blackman & Stormfront (Al Snow & Jerry Lynn) vs. Buddy Rose & The Suicide Blondes

 

Stormfront have clearly listened to Dan Severn's words, but perhaps they listened too well. They seemed to be on a Work To Rule routine, as they only came in the ring when Blackman tagged them in. The Playboy Club got up to all kinds of shenanigans, all while Snow and Lynn stood on the ring apron, waiting to be tagged in, culminating in Rose hitting Blackman with a low blow from behind. He followed up with the Inside Out Backbreaker. All while Snow and Lynn simply watched from their corner. Blackman silently glowered as they walked to the locker room, while Stormfront simply glanced at each other and shrugged.

 

The Sons Of The Beach (Cannonball Grizz & The Sandman) vs. The Midnight Express

 

The Surfing Superstars have been on a quest to seek out the top teams against which to test their mettle, and , win or lose, they have always impressed. Tonight, they would be facing the Midnight Express, who have been on an incredible roll. The SoBs gave Cornette's men quite a run for the money, but a diving elbow smash to the head of Grizz from Eaton gave the win to the Midnights. Regardless, the Sons still have the hearts of the fans.

 

Barry Windham vs. Jack Victory

 

Windham continued with he run to a rematch with Chris Adams, taking down the Big V with a Superplex.

 

Lance Storm vs. Brian Lee

 

Lee showed once again he is the man to beat, dispatching Storm with the Prime Time Slam.

 

Bret Hart & Iron and Steel (Tony Atlas & Larry Cameron) vs. Ted Dibiase & The Miracle Violence Combination

 

Once again, the once dominant Terror Collective had difficulty getting on the same page. Terry Gordy was coming in still carrying some damage from his match with Shinya Hashimoto last week, and Iron & Steel eagerly capitalized , working over his banged up arm every chance they got. Dibiase was clearly frustrated with Gordy not working up to his standards, and had harsh words for him whenever they tagged in and out. It caught up with them when Bret hit a piledriver on Dibiase, the MVC were not able to get past Atlas and Cameron in time to break up the pin. Dibiase was seething as they left the ring.

 

Pacific Television Title Match : Big Bully Busick © vs. John Tatum

 

Busick kept rolling in his standout TV Title reign, facing off with the wily veteran Tatum. Hollywood John used his considerable bag of tricks, and Busick was sorely tested, but the Big Bully prevailed with the Bully Breaker (hangman neckbreaker) to triumph again.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Billy Black

 

The Beast From The East overpowered Black and defeated him with the Slingshot Splash.

 

The Eagle vs. Stevie Ray

 

Stevie was able to overpower the Eagle and take him down with a swinging neckbreaker.

 

The Patriot vs. Booker T

 

The Patriot avenged his partner and overcame Booker with the Patriot Missile.

 

Pacific Light Heavyweight Title Match : Art Barr © vs. Chris Jericho

 

Jericho delivered a strong singles performance, taking the champ nearly to the limit before an attempted running cross body press by Jericho was countered by a rollover by Barr, keeping the belt around the Hexagon member's waist.

 

Shane Douglas vs. Jimmy Del Ray

 

In a rematch from last week, Del Ray made Douglas work for it, pushing Douglas right to the wall before the Pittsburgh native broke through with his trademark Belly To Belly Suplex for the win.

 

California Title Match : Dennis Condrey © vs. Too Cold Scorpio

 

Condrey can definitely sense Shane Douglas closing in on him, but had to focus on tonight's contender, the always competitive Too Cold Scorpio. It was a tightly contested battle, and Scorpio hit some spectacular moves, but Condrey stayed the course and prevailed with the Full Nelson Facebuster.

A one night spectacular, we continue our annual tradition of opening up with a Battle Royal for a shot at the Pacific Heavyweight Title, as well as the Tournament Of Lions Finals between Chris Hamrick and Rob Zakowski. We are now able to release the main event of the show :
