Notes on tonight's Vengeance show, in which every WWE title is at stake:

*Edge vs. Batista for the World title in Batista's last chance - Their matches have been good so far and this will have to anchor the show

*John Cena vs. Mick Foley vs. Randy Orton vs. King Booker vs. Bobby Lashley for the WWE title. Quite a strange mish-mash of confrontations and styles here. Foley usually excels in heated personal issues and this has none of that. It'll probably be good but there is no guarantee

*Chris Benoit vs. C.M. Punk for the ECW title. Earlier today the word was that Benoit had to rush home to Atlanta due to a family emergency and he was not at last night's show in Beaumont. We don't know details of it other than it was touch-and-go if he would be appearing on the show. The last indication we got is that he's expected there but it's not a lock.

*MVP vs. Ric Flair for the U.S. title. It's Flair so if he's comfortable and the rhythm is right it can be good and probably get a lot of reaction. But it's also against a guy who he has limited experience with.

*Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch vs. Matt & Jeff Hardy for the Raw tag titles. They always have good matches and this should be no different. It may not be the best match on the card, but it's the one more guaranteed to be strong than any other match.

*Santino Marella vs. Umaga for the IC title. Marella isn't over a lick, but it makes no sense for Umaga to be IC champ, so I can really see a DQ finish here.

*Melina vs. Candice Michelle for the women's title. On a nine match show, I can see this as being short

*Chavo Guerrero vs. Jimmy Wang Yang for the cruiserweight title. Same as above. I sense a short match. Technically it'll be good but with the cruiserweight title and fact fans see it as a jobber belt, you often struggle for a reaction no matter how good the work is.

*Deuce & Domino vs. ? for Smackdown tag titles. The last plan was for Sgt. Slaughter & Jimmy Snuka to be the opponents. That hasn't been confirmed to me today but it is what I'm expecting. The most interesting thing will be if they have the announcers acknowledge that Snuka is the father of Deuce

Magnum T.A. and Harley Race are both in the building. They are doing a theme where veterans will be doing cameos on the show talking about winning championships for the Night of Champions theme. Many others who are retired and under WWE contract will also be appearing in that role.

Whatever the emergency for Benoit was must have been pretty serious, considering that it would take a lot for someone like him to miss a scheduled match on pay-per-view. Meltzer later added that Rick Martel is at the show for the same reasons Race and Magnum are.

The crowd was chanting "We want Benoit" during a match where he was supposed to show up and didn't.

Remember that next time some idiot states Benoit isn't over.

You don't find fans chanting for people who aren't at shows very often in WWE.

Well, at this point, it's pretty hard to deny that Benoit is over, and not just in that sense of the word.

Also it should be noted that John Morrison ended up ECW champ in the worst possible circumstance and ended up having a decent run out of it. He didn't end up main eventing or anything but he ended up carving a niche for himself.

Johnny Nitro winning the ECW Title that night was one of the most "ECW" things that had taken place since the WWE's resurrection of the name. How many times did the ECW PPVs wind up being nothing close to resembling the card they'd announced. Someone that wasn't even supposed to wrestle that night won the ECW Title.

I'm fully aware of the tragic circumstances surrounding it, but it's still a cute bit of irony.
