It's so sweet of Jimmy Hart to set up a fundraiser for Honky's medical bills. I'm sure the donations will be pouring in. 😉

Consider me ready for the clash between Bull and Madusa.

That's a loaded tournament whether or not Steiner holds onto his spot in it.

After an incredible 1990 USWA is ready to make a climatic Last Stand.

HTM is lucky to have such a caring manager like Jimmy Hart. Get well soon HTM

A Lawler less Memphis will be very interesting.

York and Wallstreet clear everything up and it looks like Nakano wants a piece of Medusa

Austin gets back on the winning track while Medusa takes her frustrations out on poor Jimmy Hart. Hasn't the man suffered enough

The fans in Nashville will get a great night of tournament action. We'll see who heads into 91 with the Southern title. Who knows, it might just be the cock of the walk Terry Taylor.

Savage is ready for 91.

Memphis might be upside down but that means we're in for more exciting times ahead.

Nashville

December 17, 1990

This is the biggest night of the year in Nashville as they get to hold a one night tournament to crown the new Southern Heavyweight Champion as the title was vacated by Randy “Macho Man” Savage when he won the USWA World Heavyweight Title at Wrestlecade II.

Before we get into the tournament, we must first go back to this week’s tv show where Terry Taylor, who was left out of the tournament, was granted a shot by Scott Steiner to “win” his spot in the tournament if Taylor could beat Steiner in TV.  Steiner did this because he wanted to put Taylor in his place and was tired of Taylor’s arrogance and obnoxious behavior.

As for this match, Taylor talked a good game but once he felt the power of Steiner, he lost some of that arrogance and played the frightened heel really well… or maybe he wasn’t playing as Steiner was showcasing some insane power moves.  Taylor did have some time on top as he was really good at the dirty tactics but in the end, Steiner goes over Taylor with a big powerbomb.

Also coming out of this week’s tv show was that the suspension of Jerry “The King” Lawler had been lifted.  Lawler was suspended because of the fireball he tossed into the face of Honky Tonk Man.  Jimmy Hart was not happy about Lawler’s suspension being lifted as he claims that HTM is still weeks away from totally regaining his eye sight and Hart once again asked for money to be sent to help cover the medical bills of the HTM.

Just as Hart was not too happy this week, neither was Jerry Lawler.  Lawler was fuming about being left out of the Southern Heavyweight Tournament.  Lance tried to calm him down and did tell the King that Bill Apter said Lawler was definitely in the top 8 wrestlers in the USWA but that he did not include him due to the current suspension.

Jerry Jarrett came out to try and calm down Lawler but Lawler continued with his demands that he be in the tournament.  He told Jarrett that it was simple… take Tommy Rich out of the tournament and put Lawler in.  You heard some in-studio fans cheer this idea while others seemed upset.  While Lawler is the King of Memphis, Wildfire has been a good soldier since his return to the area and the fans are really behind him. Jarrett seemed unsure of what to do as he said the tournament was already set and it would be unfair to take Wildfire out.  Lawler, the one babyface that has not accepted Wildfire since his return, got on the fans a bit here and told them that Tommy Rich was nothing but a cheating, lowlife who has them all fooled.

This brought out Tommy Rich, who seemed as sick of Lawler as Lawler was of him.  Wildfire  didn’t seem to know what Lawler’s problem was but if he didn’t want to let bygones be bygones, they need to settle this in the ring once and for all and that Nashville was the perfect place.

So, it was Tommy “Wildfire” Rich solving the problem for all… It would be the #8 seed, Tommy Rich wrestling the #9 seed Jerry “The King” Lawler in the first round of the tournament.  Lance wonders what’s been going on with Lawler lately.  First it was Lawler with the fireball and now it’s Lawler going after Tommy Rich for no reason at all.  Dave Brown wonders if it has anything to do with Randy Savage winning the world title from Bossman and not Jerry Lawler.

USWA SOUTHERN TITLE TOURNAMENT RULES:

-Single Elimination

-First two rounds have a 15-minute time limit

-Semifinals have a 30-minute time limit

Finals have no time limit

Round #1

Tommy “Wildfire” Rich vs Jerry “the King Lawler

The King has been the only one not buying Wildfire’s babyface return here in Memphis and it turned out the King was right!  This match started with a handshake offer from Wildfire that was turned down by the King but it ended with Wildfire tossing the referee from the ring and then nailing Lawler with multiple chair shots to the head.  Wildfire was disqualified but he left with a big smile on his face as it seems this has been something he has been waiting for since his return to Memphis.

Quarterfinals

Bossman vs Jerry “The King” Lawler

Lawler has had his recent struggles with Bossman over the past few months as these two former USWA World Champions have squared off on numerous occasions and this one was no different.  Lawler, with no time to recover after the chair shots by Wildfire, was still laying in the ring when Bossman walked down the aisle; all the disadvantages of being the #9 seed.  This match was easy pickings for the Bossman who simply came to the ring, nailed Lawer with a few big shoulder blocks before finishing him off with a sidewalk slam.  While the crowd had been wondering about Lawler’s behavior of late, the Wildfire turn had them right back 100% behind their King and you could tell they were really concerned about Lawler’s health.

“Stunning” Steve Austin with Medusa vs Jeff Jarrett

These two faced off many times in recent months as they were both vying for the USWA World Television Title which at that point was held by Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert.  Their familiarity with each other and their in-ring talent made this possibly the best wrestling match of the tournament.  Both men did a great job of bumping and selling around the ring with multiply momentum changes in this fast-paced match.  The problem was that never man could finish the other off in the 15 minutes-  Time Limit Draw!

Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart vs Greg “the Hammer” Valentine with Jimmy Hart

To quote a former Dawn of War writer, GeneJackson, who I recently heard on a podcast about Memphis Wrestling, “only in Memphis would you see two guys face off against each other week after week following their big blow off match.”  Well, the Anvil and the Hammer just fought each other in a Memphis Street Fight at Wrestlecade where Anvil actually hit the Hammer with an anvil and now they are back at it again.  This time it was Jimmy Hart’s megaphone connecting with the Anvil which allowed Greg Valentine to hit a middle-rope knee drop to get the pinfall.  Valentine moves on!

Scott Steiner vs “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert with Missy Hyatt and Jimmy Hart

We have seen plenty of wrestlers in Memphis seem enamored with Missy Hyatt and her “assets” which has often been a bone of contention for Eddie Gilbert.  This time, it might be Missy who has eyes for someone else as she seems “real interested” in Scott Steiner.  Eddie does notice this and seems genuinely angry with Missy.  Jimmy Hart tries to get Eddie to focus but the damage may be done.  Scott Steiner is just different.  Rarely has there been this combination of skill and power and with Eddie’s mind elsewhere, he is doomed from the beginning.  The match goes less than 8 minutes with Steiner getting the win with a belly to belly suplex off the middle rope.  Even with her man lying on the ground, Missy does seem to watch Scott Steiner head up the aisle.

Semifinals:

Bossman with a bye to the finals as a result of the Austin-Jarrett Time Limit Draw.

Scott Steiner vs “Greg “The Hammer” Valentine

This was a very hard-hitting bout but with different styles.  Steiner was looking for the power moves but Valentine was looking to wear down his larger opponent by taking him apart limb by limb.  The Hammer’s kicks, knees and elbow drops to Steiner’s right leg had him hobbling every time he tried to nail a big move.  Valentine almost had the submission win with the figure four but Steiner managed to drag himself to the ropes forcing the break.

In the end, Steiner managed a big powerbomb for the victory.  One thing for sure is that neither Steiner or Austin is entering the finals at 100%.

USWA WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH

The Road Warriors © defeat The Assassin (Don Bass) and The Super Destroyer (Bill Irwin) with the Doomsday Device on The Assassin.

USWA Southern Title Tournament Finals:

Bossman vs Scott Steiner

Bossman comes to the ring first and he is all fired up as he is arguing with any fan that will fight back.  He gets the ring and immediately starts running the ropes as he is all amped up.  Steiner comes to the ring and is 100% focused.

Bossman asks for the house mic before the match started…

Bossman:  Steiner… you don’t belong in this ring.  You are nothing but a second rate tag team wrestler.  You were living off your brother Rick and sense he got hurt, you’ve done nothing. Why don’t you save yourself a whole lot of pain and walk away now!

Steiner simply nods his head at the bossman as the ref calls for the bell…

WHAM… Belly to Belly suplex as Scott Steiner tosses Bossman half way across the ring!

Lance Russell wonders if the Bossman now thinks that Scott Steiner belongs in this match.

Bossman to his knees which leads to a few big clubbing forearms by Steiner to Bossman’s back.  Steiner drapes Bossman over the bottom rope face first and does his best Bossman impersonation as he comes flying off the ropes and lands on Bossman’s back!  He is now riding him like a bronco, using the ropes to add to his momentum.  Steiner whips Bossman into the corner and comes flying after him….

WHAM…Bossman with both knees to the face of Steiner and Steiner flies backwards.

Bossman simply jumps on Steiner and starts throwing big right hands.  The ref is admonishing him to no avail.  The ref starts counting and verbally warning Bossman.  Finally, Bossman stops but only to scoop up Steiner for a big back to back suplex.

Now it is Steiner in a world of hurt!

Bossman with the baseball slide and big right hand to Steiner’s face as he was now draped across the middle rope.

Bossman back in the ring… but he took a little to long and as he put one foot across the middle rope, Steiner grabbed the rope and starting lifting it violently between Bossman’s legs.  If you didn’t know it, it would be hard to tell by the wrestling if either of these two were babyfaces.  This was all out war.

Steiner now with a few kicks and punches before he hoists the 300-pound Bossman across the ring with another belly to belly!

What’s this… a wrestling move? Steiner locks in the Boston Crab and is really adding in some serious yanking on the chin of his opponent.  It looks like Bossman is going to snap in half but he won’t submit…. Steiner keeps yanking and yanking and adding in some big time torque!

The ref grabs Bossman’s arm and lifts it once… it falls to the ground.  Is Bossman completely knocked out from the pain?

The ref lifts Bossman’s arm and drops it again… it falls straight to the ground for a count of two.

The ref lifts the arm for the third time… he releases … and it falls straight to the ground for the count of three!

We have a new USWA Southern Heavyweight Champion!  Scott Steiner is celebrating as the ref hands him the title.

From out of the back comes Rick Steiner who we have not seen since Halloween to celebrate with his brother.  Rick is still walking with the aid of crutches after the knee injury he survived against the Road Warriors that night.  The Steiner brothers embrace and head to the back as we see the Bossman struggling to get to his feet!

Well it looks like Lawler has been vindicated in his distrust of Rich. Personally though, i'mm looking forward to Tommy's response because Lawler was pushing him pretty hard. Still, an easy first round match for the Bossman.

Austin & Jarrett know each other a little too well.

Always nice to hear from Gene. Hart's interference pays off this time giving the Hammer some payback.

Scott with an impressive display in his first round match. Missy certainly thought so.

Steiner goes bck-to-back by putting down the Hammer.

Road Warriors run over the masked men.

One things that stands out as you research the Steiner Bros is how early promoters realized that Scott had it in him to be The Man. Jerry Jarrett agrees and December 1990 marks the beginning of the Steiner era.

I actually thought Rich was changing his ways. I guess Lawler was right all along. Thanks to Rich, Bossman gets an easy win. At least we're going to get more Lawler/Rich wars.

Austin and Jarret go the limit in a show stealing match

Valentine gets some revenge on Anvil

After proving himself against Taylor, Steiner decimates Hot Stuff and gets the attention of Missy

Valentine puts the hammer down but Steiner prevails

Road Warriors give the fans a good showing

Great write up for the finals. Bossman and Steiner went at it! I loved that finish. Very believable and made total sense. Steiner's on a whole new level now. It'll be interesting to see what happens when Rick returns.

Savage, Steiner, the Road Warriors. Memphis has some damn good champions.

This was a really solid show and it felt like a true Memphis-style big night. The Lawler and Tommy Rich stuff carried the emotion of the card, and Rich turning heel paid off immediately by putting the crowd fully back behind Lawler. Scott Steiner came out of this looking like a made guy — beating Gilbert, Valentine, and Bossman in one night didn’t feel forced and really established him as a top player. The Austin–Jarrett time-limit draw worked because it made the tournament feel real, even if it clearly set that feud aside for later. The Missy distraction with Steiner was subtle and effective without becoming the focus. The finals were physical and believable, and the Boston Crab finish was a smart way to show Steiner isn’t just power

One of the finest booked 1 night tournaments I've seen. Lawler looksike a man on a Misson to take back the number 1 spot at all costs. Rich turning heel is an interesting turn of events that freshens up Rich and gives Lawler a big time feud that isn't for a title.

As for the Scott Steiner he looks like a beast and a force to reckon with in his showcase night and I agree with the Boston Crab finisher showing off some of his technical side and proving he's not just a powerhouse makes him seem an even bigger deal

December 29, 1990

(This event was to be bigger but a few wrestlers NO SHOWED the event as they were moving on from USWA and didn’t want to do the job… so were the times in 1990)

Terry Taylor defeats Sweet Brown Sugar with the Five Arm.  While the finish was clean, Taylor had used questionable tactics throughout the match to thwart the hot start by Sweet Brown Sugar who had Taylor rocking after multiple missile dropkicks.  It seems Taylor’s recent defeat at the hands of Scott Steiner did nothing to bring down his ego as he strutted around the ring from the introduction to the pin.

The Dirty White Boy defeated “White Lightening” Tim Horner with the Bucksnort Blaster. (power slam) While Taylor used questionable tactics to show his heel side, DWB was just ultra-violent which had the fans all over him.  Horner’s speed was negated early as the DWB just started pummeling Horner with forearms and elbows as soon as the bell started.

Intergender Match:

Michael Wallstreet & Bull Nakano with Ms. York vs “Stunning” Steve Austin & Madusa

Wallstreet and Austin have been feuding over the USWA World Television Title for a while and Austin was able to come out on top each time until Wallstreet hired Bull Nakano to “take care of” Madusa.  While this was accomplished by a Pearl Harbor job by Nakano, it did just enough to distract Austin and allow Wallstreet to leave with the gold.  This bout, while the women and men are associated with each other, is really two feuds in one.  Wallstreet and Austin clearly don’t like each other and Nakano and Madusa both feel like they are the best woman wrestler on the world.  This should be enough to get this match over but add in Ms. Alexandria York and her computer and nobody knows what to expect.

As for the match, it is really good.  Wallstreet and Austin are awesome in the ring.  They both bump and sell and show off a wide array of moves but it is Nakano and Madusa who steal the show.  In the end, we see Ms. York attempt to hit Austin with the computer but she misses.  Stunning Steve heads out after her but he is followed by Wallstreet which leads to a big melee out on the floor.  While this was going on, Nakano was giving a good beating to Madusa until she ducked under a big clothesline from Bull.  Madusa comes off with a big clothesline and down goes Nakano.

WHAM… As Nakano staggered to her feet, Madusa nailed her with a huge spinning heel kick for the win!

When the bell rang and Wallstreet looked to the ring and saw Nakano flat on her back, he knew that his money on the hired assassiness was money not well spent.  You could just see from the smirk on Austin’s face that he was thinking, “that’s my girl.”

One thing for certain as we had to 1991, Ms. York and her computer need a new plan to slow down Stunning Steve if her man wants to keep that USWA World Television Title.

USWA Southern Tag Team Title Match

The Destruction Company and the Rock n Roll Express wrestler to a 20-minute time limit draw.  This one saw it all as both teams had many near falls but couldn’t keep the other down.

Semi-main Event

Jerry “The King” Lawler defeats Tommy “Wildfire” Rich by DQ as “Hot Stuff” Gilbert rushed the ring and attacked the King.  This saw Brian Lawler come down to help his father.  While the sides were even for a minute or two, it looks like Honky Tonk Man and his “vision problem” is heeled as he rushed to the ring where he nailed Jerry Lawler with a guitar shot.  Now Rich grabbed Lawler from behind and made him watch as Gilbert and HTM beat Brian from pillar to post.  Eventually The Rock n Roll Express and Steve Austin made the save but it was too late.  Brian was down on the center of the mat and The King was visibly distraught.

Main Event:  USWA World Title Match

Randy Savage © defeats the Big Bossman in this rematch from Wrestlecade II.  Give Bossman some credit here as he put on a great show even though he is on his way out of the USWA.  In the end, Savage connected with the flying elbow drop for the clean win for the babyface.

Shameful hos unprofessional some people ca be.

Taylor still thinks he's the cock of the walk.

DWB lives up to his name.

Medusa shows there's no weak link in her team with Austin.

The DC show they can hang with the champs.

Seems Rich has found himself a new family.

Savage closes out the year with his title reign intact.

Lance Russell:  Yellow again everybody.  Happy New Year!  Lance Russell and Dave Brown here ready for another big one.

Dave Brown:  That’s right Lance but we are not quite ready to say goodbye to 1990 yet here in the USWA.  Today we are going to be recapping the Top 10 moments from 1990 along with recognizing all the USWA title holders and even giving out a few awards!

Honorable Mentions to the Top 10 Moments of 1990 in the USWA

Last match between the Freebirds (Hayes & Garvin) vs The Studd Stable (Fuller & Eudy) for the Southern Tag Titles in a Steel Cage.

The Freebirds (Hayes &Garvin) have been feuding with The Studd Stable (Robert Fuller & Sid Eudy) for nearly 6 months now.  We have seen many different types of matches as these two teams have traded the Southern Tag Team Titles back and forth.  We have even seen this feud divide families as Jimmy Golden sided with the Freebirds for a time and Buddy Roberts helped the Studd Stable.  Eddie Marlin, concerned for the well-being of all involved, decided this would be the Last Match between these two teams in Memphis.

As for the match, Eudy injures his leg which allows Hayes and Garvin to go over and win the titles.

Jerry “The King” Lawler vs “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert with Jimmy Hart and Missy Hyatt:  Stipulation:  Anyone who interferes will be suspended for one year from wrestling in Memphis.

In this match, two interesting things happen… first Lance Rusell notices that “The Bounty Hunter” Dick Slater is sitting in the first row.  Last week, we found out that Slater was hired by someone to take Lawler out of wrestling but Slater needed to be sure what he was told was the truth.  Next, Lance, is joined by Curt Hennig at the announce area and says that he is just here to “watch” Lawler get what’s coming to him.  Lance points out that this could be trouble for The King as Slater, the bounty hunter, doesn’t work for the CWA and technically, neither does Hennig, the USWA World Champion.

As for the match, it is back and forth with a bunch of momentum changes.  Every time Lawler has the advantage, we see Jimmy Hart and Missy Hyatt try to come up with a way to help Hot Stuff without being suspended.  Eventually we see Missy try to distract ref Jerry Calhoun with her “assets.”  This doesn’t work but Calhoun does take time to admonish Missy and tells her to get off the apron.

WHAM… Low blow by Gilbert on Lawler.

Wait a minute… Slater is coming towards the ring!

Eddie goes to cover Lawler!

Slater grabs…. Missy Hyatt… and lifts her off the apron….

Jerry Calhoun turns towards the action and sees the cover.  He rushes over to start the count.

Missy Hyatt screams when Slater lifts her up!

Hotstuff sees Missy in the Slater’s arms and gets off Lawler and heads towards the rope

Here comes Curt Hennig

Slater puts down Missy and starts to point as Jimmy Hart… Hart nervous… starts to run around the ring!

WHAM… Jimmy Hart and Curt Hennig collide…Hart goes flying and Hennig goes to check on him.

WHAM… Uppercut by Lawler on Gilbert….  WHAM… piledriver by Lawler

1…2…3!  Lawler has defeated Gilbert

Jerry “The King” Lawler & Jeff Jarrett vs “Macho Man” Randy Savage with Miss. Elizabeth & Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert with Jimmy Hart & Missy Hyatt with Dick Slater as the Special Guest Referee

Give Slater some credit.  He played this down the middle.  Every time someone went to break the rules, he got involved!  He cleared Eddie Gilbert away from the corner when he nailed Lawler with an illegal knee to the gut.  He shoved both JJ and Eddie Gilbert out of the ring after a too-long double team and he knocked Jimmy Hart off the apron as he came up with the microphone.

In the end, Lawler is straddling Gilbert and starts throwing big haymakers at Hot Stuff.  Slater warns the King to stop but he keeps going as the crowd is counting the blows.  Slater asks Lawler again to stop with the punches as the fans are nearing double digits!

WHAM…  Slater grabbed Lawler by his singlet and throws him backwards.

WHAM… Gilbert face plants from the blows but he falls towards his corner and Macho Man makes the tag!

WHAM… Top Rope Elbow Drop by the Macho Man….

JJ rushes in to break up the count but Slater interrupts him and forces him to leave the ring.  This argument takes a little time but Jimmy Hart now scampers into the ring and nails Lawler with the microphone before Slater turned back.

The two blows by Savage and Hart are too much and Savage pinned Lawler as Slater completed the three-count!

And now the Top 10

#10:  Southern Heavyweight Title:  Randy Savage © vs  Curt Hennig

Macho Man retains the title with what might have been the match of the year in the USWA as Macho Man connected with the top rope elbow drop after a long battle that saw both men showcase all of their talents.

#9: USWA World Title:  Jerry Lawler vs “The Bounty Hunter” Dick Slater

Is this just another USWA World Title bout or is this Slater’s attempt to collect a bounty on Lawler.  The match goes through a long, slow, feeling-out process between the two punchers as the opening 10 minutes looks very much like a true wrestling match.  We get a few pushes into the corner by both men followed by surprising, clean breaks.  We get hip tosses, hammer locks, reversal of hammer locks with great go behinds, arm bars and leg scissors.  To many, it was surprising that Slater seemed to control most of this segment.

Lawler became frustrated with the pace and elbowed Slater in the head, only to have The Bounty Hunter hip toss the King in the center of the ring.  The wrestling continues with more armbars and wristlocks.  Finally, the two lock up for a test of strength where it is Slater’s turn to throw the big elbow into the head of Lawler and the brawl is on!  After a few punches that saw the King take the advantage, Lawler whips Slater into the ropes and goes for the big backdrop only to have Slater with the leap frog escape.

WHAM… Reverse Neck Breaker by Slater!

WHAM… Knee Drop by Slater and he goes for the cover but Lawler kicks out at 2.

Frustrated, Slater tosses the King to the floor and now we get a nice fight out by the fans and on to the ramp towards the locker rooms.  This is where we get the camera shot of Tommy “Wildfire” Rich sitting in the stands with a big smile on his face, eating a bucket of popcorn.

Not sure if the appearance of Tommy Rich shook the King, but Slater seemed to take control of the situation.  Slater uses the ring bell to draw some color of Lawler and then runs him into the ring post before tossing the champion back into the ring!

Slater with the cover but again Lawler kicks out at 2.  Slater frustrated, walks around the ring before grabbing Lawler by the back of the head as he is setting him up for the piledriver!  The fans sense this could be the end.

WHAM… Lawler, somehow blocked the piledriver and nailed Slater with a backdrop.  From there, the comeback is on as Lawler is all fired up!  He connects with 10 big punches to the head of Slater and the Bounty Hunter staggers before crumbling on the mat.

Strap is pulled down… Lawler to the middle rope…. And Tommy Rich walks to ring side!

Lawler sees Wildfire but focuses on Slater and leaps and connects with the big fist drop!  Lawler now scoops up Slater…

WHAM… Piledriver by Lawler.  1…2…3!

#8:  :  USWA WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE - The Road Warriors © vs The Rock n Roll Express

Speed vs power to the extreme!

This is the USWA World Tag Team Champions vs The USWA Southern Tag Team Champions but it is only the Road Warriors whose World Title is on the line.

It is Hawk and Robert Gibson who start off and as soon as the lock up collar and elbow, Hawk launches Robert across the ring.  With Robert sitting on the ground, you can just tell by the look on his face that he was overwhelmed by Hawk’s power.  It is one thing to know about the power of the Road Warriors but it is another to feel it first-hand.

Robert with a new plan… They lock up again and this time it’s Robert with a go behind to a hammer lock to an inside cradle for the pin.

Count of 1 and Hawk launches Robert into the air.  Hawk with a big scream and flex!  We get about half the crowd with a pop.

Hawk rushes at Robert and nails him with a big clothesline.

Ricky rushes in and Hawk military press’s him and tosses him on top of Robert!

Things slow down for a second as both teams tag out.  It is Ricky vs Animal.

Animal simply kicks Ricky in the gut and lifts him up by his head and throws him into the Warriors corner where Animal and Hawk go to work.

Robert rushes over but Animal simply turns and nails him with a huge clothesline.  Robert again flies to the matt.

A bit if a funny spot is next as Robert once again rushes over to save Ricky but this time he sees Animal turn and Robert stops and walks towards his corner.  He thinks he has saved himself from another major blow but it was Animal who followed him and nailed him with a big clothesline to the back of his head and Robert is down for about the 10th time already in the match.

Ricky tries to escape but Animal catches him and whips him into the ropes.  Morton comes off with a cross-body block only to be caught by Animal.  Animal slams Morton into his knee; lifting him over and over again dropping him each time across his knee.

Somehow both members of the Rock n Roll Express roll out of the ring and they come together to discuss a new plan as this one is not working.

Ricky up on the apron as here comes Animal.  It is Robert who trips up Animal and together Ricky and Robert who ram Animal’s leg into the ring post.

The RnR Express now go to work on Animal.

Double clothesline- Double Drop Kick-Double Leg Drop.

It is now Animal playing the wrestler in peril as the Express have him in real trouble. They are hitting him with every move you could think off.

Animal tried on numerous occasions to escape only to have Ricky and Robert double team him back to their own corner.

Finally, Ricky with a mistake as he whipped Animal into the corner and rushed in to quickly as Animal launched himself out with a nasty clothesline.

With Ricky down, Animal tags in Hawk.

Hawk is now cleaning house!  He nails Ricky… Robert… Ricky… Robert.

Animal is back up and scoops up Ricky.  Hawk to the top rope!

WHAM…. Dooms Day Device!!!

1…2….3!  The Road Warriors survive.

#7:  USWA WORLD TITLE MATCH- Big Bossman © vs “Macho Man” Randy Savage

The first thing you notice is the size advantage for Bossman.  He is huge!  The two walk to the center of the ring.

WAAP…. Bossman slaps Savage….WAAP…. Savage slaps Bossman.

The two slap each other about 5 times and then lock up and roll around the ropes all over the ring.

Finally, the ref breaks them up in the corner but Bossman with a huge heel elbow on the break and Savage is down.  Bossman gets the first shot at wrestling from the top.

Bossman makes this more of a boxing match then anything else with huge right hands.  Give Savage some credit as he took about 5 blows and then blocked the 6th one and fired away with a few of his own.  Bossman wasn’t having any of this and followed up a rake of the eyes with a nasty headbutt and Savage was down again.

Bossman now begins the big moves.  He drapes Savage over the bottom rope and runs across the ring and jumps on Savage’ back.  Next, he slides the ring and nails Savage with another big right hand.

Savage rolls all the way across the ring and out onto the floor as Bossman heads to the center of the ring and gloats about his dominance.  Finally Bossman heads out to attack Savage but it was too long.

Savage with the Ax Handle chop and he is back on top!  Savage rams Bossman’s head into the steel barrier and then to the amazement of all, he scoops up Bossman on the concrete floor.

Savage is about to run Bossman in the steel ring post but …

WHAM… Bossman reversed it and it is Savage he goes face first into the post.

Somehow, Savage made it in before the count of 10 but it is only to take more punishment.  Kicks, chops, elbows, slams and splashes…. It is all Bossman.

WHAM… Bossman with a belly to belly powerbomb and he knows its over.  He simply lays across Savage

1…2…. Oh my God… Savage kicks out!

Bossman drags up Savage into a nasty headlock but somehow Savage nails the back drop!

Savage is still slow but he is starting to feel it as Bossman is down and trying to recover.  It is a race to see who is up first.

The fans are so disappointed as it is Bossman up first.  He is really showing why he is the champion.

WHAM… Another giant splash in the corner!  UMMMPH …. Bossman locks in the Bear Hug.

Savage is flailing in agony but there is no quit in the Macho Man.  He kind of slithers up in the bear hug and now has a bit of a leverage advantage and starts throwing big right hands at Bossman.

Bossman drops Savage and again, we see both men struggling to be first up. Again, it is the champ and he whips Savage into the corner but nobody home… Savage scampers to the top rope and comes off with a double axhandle smash to Bossman.

Like lightening, Savage rushes across the ring and scampers up to the top.  He is now almost ¾ of the ring away from Bossman.  He stands tall… arms up in the air… leaps

WHAM… Savage with the Top Rope Flying Elbow Drop!!

1…2…3!  Randy “Macho Man” Savage is the new USWA World Heavyweight Champion.

#6:  USWA World Tag Team Title Match:  The Steiners © vs Doom with Teddy Long

Doom comes to the ring dressed all in black from their capes to their long tights.  They are led by Teddy Long who does his best to antagonize the fans.  When the Steiners come to the ring in their Michigan jackets, they go face to face with Simmons and Reed.  Nobody seems to want to leave the ring as the two teams do a lot of posturing around the ring.  Finally we get started with Rick Steiner and Hacksaw Butch Reed.

This one starts with a big pose down before the two finally lock up.  Both men struggle to move their opponent from the center of the ring, so they release the lock up and just start trading big right hands!  The crows is loving this one already.  Again, we get a lock up but Reed thrusts a knee into the midsection of Rick and then Hacksaw goes to work…. A big elbow after an Irish Whip sends Rick flying.  Reed now shoves Rick back into his own corner and Reed and Simmons now go to work on Steiner.

Somehow Rick manages to fight his way out of the corner and nails the now legal Rron Simmons with a big Steiner Bomb (clothesline) Hacksaw doesn’t want to see Doom’s advantage go away so he rushes in and illegal attacks Rick.  This brings in Scott and we go bonzo-gonza for a few minutes where the Steiners finally got the advantage.

Rick and Scott go to whip Ron and Butch into each other but somehow, Reed leapfrogs his partner.  Both Butch and Ron point at their heads like they are just too smart!

WHAM… Double clothesline by the Steiners on Doom!

Doom manages to take the action out to the arena floor where we get a wild brawl with the ref having no control.  Finally we are back in the ring with Scott and Simmons.  Again, the two big men lock up collar and elbow by Simmons wastes no time before he elbows Scott in the head.  Simmons goes to whip Scott into the corner but Scott reverses it.  Simmons hits the corner so hard, he bounces out!

WHAM… Belly to Belly by Steiner.  He goes for the cover.  1…2…. Kick out by Simmons.

WHAM… Shoulder breaker by Steiner.  He covers again.  1…2… 2 ½ … kick out by Simmons.

Steiner again whips Simmons into the ropes but Ron hooks the ropes as Scott went airborne for the Frankensteiner.  Simmons tags in Hacksaw Butch Reed.

Reed quickly tosses Scott to the floor.  This angers Rick who enters the ring and goes after Hacksaw.  This was all just a trick to allow Simmons to go to work on the outside against Scott.

WHAM… Simmons drops Scott face first against the security railing before rolling him back into the ring.

Doom now really goes to work on Scott Steiner.  Reed nails a reverse neckbreaker but again, only a count of two.  Next, Reed with a huge clothesline; another 2 count.  In comes Simmons.  Spinebuster…. 2 ½ count.

Rick can take no more but all this did was force the ref to push Rick back out of the ring which set up Doom!

Spike Piledriver….1…2… Rick makes the save.

Scott Steiner manages an inside cradle on Simmons but all this did was anger Doom who now stomped Scott all over the ring.

WHAM… Doom with a double suplex but again, Rick makes the save.

Simmons now locks in the Camel Clutch and tries to rip Scott’s face apart but he refuses to give in.  In fact, Scott manages to drag  Simmons over to his corner for the tag to Rick but Teddy Long saw what was happening and jumped up on the apron just in time to distract the ref.  Since the ref didn’t see the tag, he, again forced Rick back out of the ring and beating of Scott continued.

Finally, we get the hot tag and Rick goes NUTS!!

WHAM… powerslam on Simmons.  WHAM… belly to belly suplex on Reed.

WHAM… Double Clothesline on Reed.  WHAM… Double Suplex on Simmons.

WHAM… Frankensteiner on Simmons.

And for a match we all the chaos and power… Rick from behind, shoves Simmons into the ropes and hooks the belly for the roll up for the successful title defense!

#4:  Jerry Lawler wins the USWA World Title

Lance Russell: Let’s all take a look at this video from the AWA event that took place on Saturday Night in Market Square Arena.

We see Jerry Lawler ramming the USWA champ, “Mr Perfect” Curt Hennig’s head into the uncovered turnbuckle before pulling the strap down and climbing to the middle rope for the fist drop which he followed up with a devastating piledriver for the 3-count!!

Lance Russell:  That’s right folks… We have a new USWA World Champion, Jerry “The King” Lawler and I was there in Indianapolis the other night and had a chance to interview the King in the locker room just after that glorious victory and here is that video.

Lance Russell:  I’m with the new USWA World Heavyweight Champion… Jerry “The King” Lawler who just beat Curt Hennig for the 1-2-3 right there in the middle of the ring.  Now that some of the noise has died down, now that the fans who were cheering for you a little while ago have gone home, I want to know your thoughts on this accomplishment.  We all know that you have been chasing Curt Hennig for months and now you’ve done it.

Jerry Lawler:  Lance, I guess over the past 6 months or so, I’ve thought about a thousand times what I would say if I was ever won the world title but now that it’s happened, I’m at a loss for words.  It’s like I’ve finally climbed to the top of a mountain that I never knew if could climb.  I mean after having the title taken from me by a coin toss, then taken away by the interference of Randy Savage and now dealing with Dick Slater, this has been a rough 6 months.  I mean there where so many obstacles I had to overcome but I did it for all those fans who were behind me tonight.  I know that Memphis wrestling has long been associated with the AWA but we haven’t been together for awhile now and the way they were cheering for me tonight was special.  I did this for them… for all the fans back in Memphis and for all the fans around the wrestling world!

#4: Jerry Lawler vs Big Bossman vs Randy Savage in a Lights Out-Non Title- Non-Sanctioned Country Whipping Match

While this is not a title match, one thing is for certain… the winner of this wild bout can stake claim to being the top dog in the USWA!  With everybody with a strap and everyone in the ring at the same time, one thing for certain… Lawler, Savage and Bossman will all have the welts to show for this one.

Whipping, choking and tying people to the ropes soon became the norm in this Country Whipping Match.  It didn’t matter to anyone who they hit… all three men have pure hatred for each other and with good reason!

In the end, we see Lawler trying to choke out Bossman while Savage was down from a powerslam by Bossman.  The choke went on long enough that Macho Man recovered enough to climb to the top rope…

WHAM… top rope diving elbow drop to both Lawler and Bossman.  Savage tosses Bossman over the top rope and then violently begins to whip Lawler.

Finally Savage covers Lawler.  1…2….3!  Savage wins this brutal match.

As for the fans, they may have found some new respect for Savage for surviving such a brutal bout!

#3:  The Road Warriors defeat the Steiner Brothers for the USWA World Tag Title

No need to go into too much detail as these two power teams nailed each other with some of the biggest and hardest moves in the sport for about 12 minutes until it appeared that Rick Steiner injured his right leg while executing one of his big suplexes.  This left Scott to defend the title by himself against Animal and Hawk which is just too big of a task for any human. In the end, we see The Road Warriors connect with the Doomsday Device on Scott and we have new USWA World Tag Team Champions…. The Road Warriors.

#2:  Family Ties:  After Honky Tonk Man unmasked POW who turns out to be Brian Christopher.

We see the First Family (Jimmy Hart, HTM, Eddie Gilbert and Greg Valentine) at the podium with Lance Russell.  Honky Tonk Man is visibly upset and demands that Brian Christopher comes out to the podium which he obliges.

Jimmy Hart: “Oh baby get ready. This is gonna be great. The cat’s coming out of the bag.”

Honky Tonk Man:  “Brian, I warned you last time…. If you ever showed your face again in USWA Wrestling, I was gonna blow your cover. I knew there was something strange about that masked POW character nonsense and that’s exactly why I pulled it off of you last week in the Midsouth Coliseum.  You thought you could pull the wool over our eyes.  No way!  I saw right through you.  I mean come on Brian. Imitating a prisoner of war that’s really low even for someone with your last name.

Brian:  “hold on, hold on!”

Jimmy Hart: “No way baby. It’s too late!”

Brian: “I’m not talking to you, you little weasel.  I’m talking to Honky Tonk Man; or should I say Wayne Ferris or ….. should I say ……Cousin.”

Honky Tonk man with a shocked look on his face.

Brian Christopher:  “My father always told me how dumb you were and you just proved it. My POW mask wasn’t for Prisoner of War. It’s for Prince of Wrestling!!  That’s right folks, my father is the King of Memphis Wrestling. Jerry Lawler!”

A gasp from the crowd along with Lance Russell!

Brian Christopher:   “That’s right Lance.  I am Jerry Lawler’s son. Folks, I’m sorry for not telling you the truth from the start but I wanted to try and make it in this sport all on my own.  It has nothing to do with Dad.  This was all my decision and I’m sorry for not being honest from the from the beginning.

Jimmy Hart and Honky Tonk Man look like all of the Thunder was just stolen from them as the cat is out of the bag.

Brian Christopher:  “Honky Tonk Man… I’m sorry, I mean Wayne.   Let’s tell your story …now since you wanted to be the one who spilled all the beans about me.   I remember Dad saying you were the black sheep of the family and that’s why we didn’t spend any time with the Ferris side of the family.  He said you just was raised all bad and you didn’t know how to act.  That’s right folks …. Wayne here is my daddy’s first cousin and my second cousin, but we don’t like to admit that in public .   You cousin… you’ve always been a lowlife and after the last time Daddy kicked your butt, from one end of the arena to the other, you ran away like you’ve always done.  This time, you ran all the way up to New York and tried to pretend you were some famous musician. The only problem was you were worse at music than you were at wrestling.

WHAM …. Honky Tonk Man attacks Brian This leads to a 3-1 beating as “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine join in the attack and they all get their shots in on  young Brian.

Lance Russell: And here comes the King and the Anvil. It’s Jerry Lawler and he’s on fire!... Big right hand after big right hand.  Neidhart is hammering away on Valentine.  Somehow, Jimmy Hart gathers his men as they run for the hills as Lawler and Neidhart check on Brian.

Jerry Lawler, Jim Neidhart and Bryan Christopher to the podium.

Jerry Lawler: Jimmy Hart… Wayne Farris, my lowlife cousin.   Let’s get one thing straight.  I‘ve known both of you for most of my life… since we were all kids.  You two both tried your luck in the music industry and failed.  I tried to help you both out … to make something of yourselves … by bringing you into wrestling.  Wayne…. Jimmy…. The problem was you two were jealous.  Jealous of me.  Jealous that you two weren’t any good at this either so you have been trying to come up with ideas for decades on how to run me out of wrestling.  Well you’ve failed each and every time.   I am the King of Memphis and now I got me boy with me… Brian…. The Prince of Wrestling.  Now imagine how hard it will be for you two now that there’s two Lawler’s.  Things are gonna change around here.  It’s you two who will be run out of Memphis … by King and the Prince!

Father and son embrace as the crowd goes wild.

#1:  Randy Savage hits Jerry Lawler with a car!

As the show came to an end last week, we saw Eddie Marlin rush onto the set in urgent need of a doctor.  When asked what happened, all he could say before the screen faded to black was Lawler… Randy Savage uh…

So it turns out that as Jerry Lawler was leaving the TV studio, Randy Savage hit him with his car and then got out of the car and was all over Jerry Lawler.  It was at this time that Jeff Jarrett, Dustin Rhodes and the Freebirds were leaving and then rushed over to aid Lawler.  Savage got back in his car and drove off.  An ambulance was called for Lawler who was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

Lance Russell:  First of all Jerry, what happened last Saturday afternoon?

Jerry Lawler:  That’s simple.  The one they call the Macho Man wasn’t so macho.  He needed a car to do what he couldn’t do.  He came up from behind and ran me over.  Lucky for me, I just rolled over the hood and landed on my right shoulder.  But listen up Macho… you better have eyes in the back of your head because Memphis is my town and I got a lot of friends.  Revenge is coming but you just won’t know when.

USWA 1990 YEAR-END AWARDS

Best Young Wrestler of 1990  (Must be under 25😞  Jeff Jarrett

Jeff Jarrett- Jeff had a remarkable 1990 as he wins the Southern Title at only 23 years old.  He has also main evented with Jerry Lawler in his feuds against the First Family and Randy Savage.  Jeff has also been involved in a 4-way battle for the USWA Television Title where he more than held his own against Eddie Gilbert, Steve Austin, and Michael Wallstreet.

Most Hated Wrestler of 1990:  Randy Savage

Randy “Macho Man” Savage- While Randy has recently changed his way and has become a fan favorite, nobody can forget just how bad he was in 1990.  He invaded the USWA and attacked anyone in his sight while demanding matches with The King, Jerry Lawler all because he was mad that his fathers promotion, ICW, was kept out of the CWA years ago.  Savage went on to hit Jerry Lawler with a car and interfere in World Title Matches preventing the King from winning the title.  Randy even went so far as to place Miss. Elizabeth in harms way multiple times as he repeatedly put her in the path of Jerry Lawler and Bossman to save himself!

Most Popular Wrestler of 1990:  Jerry Lawler

Jerry “The King” Lawler- This is Memphis so enough said!  Add in that Jerry has won the World Title, came out on top of huge feuds against the likes of Eddie Gilbert, Dick Slater, and Curt Henning all while keeping Jimmy Hart at bay.  Throw in the fact that he has joined forces with his son, Brian, and the ovations keep coming.  P.S…. don’t forget to turn on the TV and see Jerry sponsoring one of his 37 products or hoisting his own talk show or basically being the reason that half of Memphis wakes up early on Saturdays just to see him.

USWA Tag Team of the Year:  The Steiner Brothers

This was a tough one.  The Freebirds, Doom, the Steiners and the Road Warriors have all been so dominant during 1990 but given that the Steiners held the World Title for over 7 months, they are given the nod!  The Road Warriors might not be too happy about this as they are the current World Champions and are undefeated against Scott and Rick but longevity means something in this category.

USWA Wrestler of the Year:  ???

This one comes down to 4 wrestlers… Curt Hennig, Randy Savage, Bossman and Jerry Lawler who have each held the USWA World Title at various times throughout the year.  The easiest way to narrow this down is that Curt Hennig and Bossman are no longer with the promotion so they are out.  So now it comes down to Jerry Lawler and Randy Savage.  These two have easily been the Feud of the Year in the USWA with all they have been through but who comes away with the big award.  If you go by who had the longer title reign in 1990, the King is the winner but this one needs a deeper dive and it all comes down to the Bossman.  Lawler was never able to defeat the big correctional officer while Savage never lost to him.  In the end, the Wrestler of the Year was Randy Savage who went all of 1990 with only one defeat and that was in a tag team match!

Love the idea of a full top 10 complete with honorary mentions.

Savage cleans up being a part of ha;f the list as well as scoring wrestler of the year....and the most hated award but the Macho Man isn't gonna let that bother him.

Even with the no shows, the USWA still gave the fans a pretty damn good show to end the year.

Rich and Gilbert together are Memphis heel magic. This is going to get beyond personal with Lawler and son.

It's good to see Taylor's still as arrogant as ever

Austin and Wallstreet has been a gem of a feud.

Your tag team division is stacked with top notch teams. The champs will have their work cut out for them.

Savage remains strong as he takes his title reign into 91

I loved the year end review and awards. So many great Memphis memories. Congratulations to Savage on winning wrestler of the year.

With all that talent, the USWA will no doubt provide more action packed wrestling and hot angles in 91.

Solid card for the "last stand".  Stunning Steve and Madusa make one helluva team, although Wallstreet and Nakano are no joke either, Austin and Madusa pull off the win.

I'll have to read back through some of the previous results to see the Destruction Company is, but if they're going 25 minutes with the Rock & Roll Express, they have to be top notch.

Jerry Lawler gets the DQ win over Tommy Rich when Eddie Gilbert interferes which prompts Brian Christopher to attempt to make the save for dear old Dad (some of my all time favorites involved here!)  Honky Tonk had other plans but thankfully Austin and the Rock & Rolls show up to make the save but too little too late.

Macho Man retains the USWA World title over Big Bossman in a great main event.

Perfect card for USWA to end the year on, looking forward to seeing what's in store for 1991

Nice rundown and best points of USWA 1990. Really good way to see what went down the previous year and who was involved in all the top storyline.

Because of all his involvement, I believe the top guy should have been Lawler regardless of record.

USWA MEMPHIS

Taped on January 17, 1991

The show opens with a video tape of a meeting between Jerry Jarrett and Kevin VonErich where we are told that the USWA is going to be spreading into the Dallas area.  We see both Jarrett and VonErich hype up this expansion!!

Next, we see Lance Russell and Jerry Jarrett presenting the giant trophy for 1990 Wrestler of the Year to Randy “Macho Man” Savage.

Jerry Jarrett:  To tell you the truth Randy, if you would have asked me last January who was going to be the USWA Wrestler for 1990, your name would never have come up… Well, what a difference a year can make.  You really had a great year and congratulations on not only being the 1990 Wrestler of the Year but also on entering 1991 as the World Champion.

Randy Savage:  Ohhh yeahhhh… The cream rises to the top…. I told you when I got here last year that I had a plan… A plan to become the best wrestler in the USWA and I think I proved that to you….  Ohhh yeahhh but let the Macho Man be the first to say that it was the people in the USWA that made me the man I am today… The Macho Man is a changed man and ….

Lance Russell:  Oh for Gosh sakes…. Austin Idol… what are you doing here.  It’s been over a year since you’ve shown your face in Memphis and now you pick this moment to return.

Austin Idol:  Great to see you again darlin… Randy… you know what… I’m flattered … I mean they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery… and look at you… a carbon copy of the Universal Heartthrob…. From the sun glasses …. To the bandana… to the self-adoration… and look… you even got this little award for 1990.  That’s so cute…  Austin Idol darlin is called the greatest all around wrestler Memphis has ever seen.  I’ve won ever title this place has ever had.  From the Southern Title to the Mid-American Title to the Television Title to the Southern Tag Title… I am the most decorated wrestler ever in this backwoods part of the country… but it’s nice you were the wrestler of a single year.

Randy Savage:  ohhh yeahhh baby… Austin Idol… listen closely to what the Macho Man has to say brother…  I’ve soared with the eagles and I’ve slithered with the snakes and I’ve been everywhere in between… and you Austin Idol are the biggest snake of them all.  And trust me… the Macho Man would never think of being like Austin Idol… I can only go so low!

Austin Idol:  Darlin… you think you are so high and mighty… you think you alone are at the top of the mountain.  You look at that title around your waist and you think it puts you above the Universal Heartthrob!  Well listen up Savage… the only reason I’ve never had that title is because Jerry Jarrett here went and changed the name of the company when I left last year… the reason is obvious… he’s jealous of me and doesn’t want to look at my name in his record books … So how about you put your money where you’re mouth is darlin and give Austin Idol the title shot he deserves!  I will even make it easy for you to decide… I can see from the anger in your eyes that you don’t like me very much… so … how about this … If I win, I’m the USWA World Champion and if I don’t win… I retire from wrestling and you never have to see me again inside of the ring!

Macho Man… finger on chin as if he is thinking… starts slowly turning around…

Austin Idol:  Oh darlin… just to help you decide….

WHAM… Idol breaks the Wrestler of the Year Trophy over the back of Savage… and then attacks him….

Lance Russell… Folks… we need a break… I’ve never…

COMMERCIAL BREAK

When we come back from break, Savage is screaming at Jerry Jarrett to book the match… book the match!!!  Jarrett seems overwhelmed …. walks away shaking his head.

Match #1:

The Dirty White Boys win a squash match over Mike Jackson and Crash Holly as DWB #1 nailed Holly with the Bucksnort Blaster (Powerbomb)

Next, a more composed Jerry Jarrett returns.  He first apologizes to all the fans for what happened early.  He goes on to explain that he wanted to ban Austin Idol from all other events but Randy Savage begged him not to.  Jarrett says he never saw the Macho Man so angry and to prevent Savage from taking the law into his own hands, he granted Macho Man the match and that it is going to happen at the next major USWA event which he was going to announce earlier before all the chaos.  This event is titled “Memphis Madhouse” and will be held at the Midsouth Coliseum on January 26, and besides the USWA World Title Match between Savage and Idol where Idol’s career is on the line, house … there will be two unique battle royals.  One will be a 20 man over the top rope battle royal  where the winner will earn a future USWA World Title shot and the other will be a 10 team over the top rope battle royal where the winning team will earn a future USWA World Tag Team Title Match.  Here are the rules:

  • Start: Two wrestlers or teams begin, drawing random entry numbers.
  • Entry: A new participant enters every 2 minutes until all 20 singles or all 10 teams  are in. All tag teams must have wrestled as a tag team in the last 3 months.
  • Elimination: Must go over the top rope, and both feet must touch the outside floor for elimination. In the tag team battle royal, once one wrestler is eliminated, so is his partner.
  • Not Eliminated: Going through the middle ropes or under the bottom rope does not count as elimination.
  • Winning: The last person and the last teamleft in the ring wins, earning a title shot in the HemisFair Arena in San Antonio at the first USWA pay-per-view in Texas titled Texas Sytle!
  • No Pinfalls/Submissions: These traditional methods don't count; only rope elimination matters.

Lance:  That sounds really exciting… Fans, get your tickets early for this one.  It is going to be a really interesting night of rassling!

Next we Terry Taylor use a lot of dirty tactics along with his one legal move, the Five Arm to defeat George South

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Match #2:

Terry Taylor use a lot of dirty tactics along with his one legal move, the Five Arm to defeat George South.

Next Lance Russell welcomes to the podium… one of the best managers in wrestling JJ. Dillon.

JJ. Dillon makes his USWA debut and announces that he has signed a new client,  the former WCW World Champion…. The real world champion … “The Total Package” Lex Luger.

We get a video package of Lex flexing, slamming bodies and using the Torture Rack to break some inferior wrestlers in half all set to Def Leppard “Armageddon It.”

JJ Dillon:  The other day I was sitting by the pool reminiscing about the glory days … when I controlled the sport of wrestling.  When suddenly the phone rang and I couldn’t believe who it was… the most genetically gifted athlete to ever come along in any professional sport… Lex Luger.  He said that the time had come… the time to put together the greatest duo this sport has ever seen.  He asked if I wanted to go on a wild ride to the top of the mountain …  He asked if I would join him here in USWA Wrestling to collect another world title.  I simple said,  “sure, champ.”  Next, I hear about this unique battle royal, Memphis Mayhem, where all Lex has to do is win a battle royal and he earns a World Title shot.  No waiting in line … no biding his time… no beating jobber after jobber… No stalling.  Win one battle royal and Randy Savage or whoever the champ is by then, and The Total Package gets a world title shot.  Now you can see the jubilation on my face as I know the task is as good as done.  Nobody can stop the Total Package… and while there is jubilation on my face, I bet you can hear a pin drop in the locker room of Randy Savage right now as he knows it is only a matter of time!

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Match #3:

Jeff Jarrett and Brian Christopher are dominating Evan Riley and Larry Cheatum when The First Family including its newest member, Tommy “Wildfire” Rich, attack Jeff Jarrett and Brian Christopher.  Jerry Lawler and the Rock n Roll Express make the save.  After a commercial break, Lawler and the RnR Express are with Lance Russell.

Jerry Lawler:  After all the talking… after all the garbage that Tommy Rich spewed all over Memphis about being here as some kind of new man… well you showed your true colors these last few weeks.  First hitting me with a chair, then going after my close friend Jeff Jarrett and my son here today and let’s not forget… aligning yourself with the lowest form of scum… Jimmy Hart.  Tommy Rich… you might have had some of the people around here fooled but not me.  And now after today, you made it clear… this is personal.  Fighting me is one thing but attacking Brian from behind… I’m coming for you!  Forget that… I’m coming for the whole group of you.  Jimmy Hart… Eddie Gilbert… Honky Tonk Man… Tommy Rich… I’ll spend all of 1991 if I need to …. The First Family is done in 91!

Lawler storms off and Lance puts over just how angry he is before turning attention to the RnR Express where he informs the crowd that the Rock N Roll Express have some unfinished business with the Destruction Crew.  Both Robert and Ricky hype up this feud some more.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Match #4:

The Cam Am Express (Doug Furnas and Phil Lafon) have a nice debut win where they show off a good look along with some pretty good skill.  They said they heard about the tag team battle royal at Memphis Mayhem and they came running.

Lance Russell:  Until next time… so long from Memphis!

USWA DALLAS

Taped on January 10, 1991

Announcer Michael St. John welcomes us to the first ever USWA Wrestling show from Dallas

Kevin Von Erich, the President of USWA Dallas, comes out and hypes up the merger with USWA and can’t wait to share the best wrestling talent in the world with the people all over the South.  He then goes on to announce and hype up Memphis Madhouse, the big battle royal in the Midsouth Coliseum on January 26th.  Kevin also assures us that the most important title in the territory, the Texas Heavyweight Title, will still be used but it will be called the USWA Texas Heavyweight Title and that Wild Bill Irwin is still the champ.

Next up is the return of Gary Hart to the area and his new star, The Great Muta.  Hart is in his normal jacket and tie but Muta is covered from head to toe in a black karate outfit with gold covered slits for his eyes.

Gary Hart:  I want to inform you Michael that I was contacted from some very important people in the world of Japanese wrestling and they told me the Great Muta is the man that I have been looking for a very long time.  He is an expert at judo, tae kwon and four other styles of martial arts.  They went on to tell me that they need my help… Muta is very upset… he has not received the respect in America that he deserves…. In fact,… he has faced the bigotry, prejudice and discrimination from the jealous wrestling fans of the American South.  I told them that I have always had the most respect for the people of the Rising Sun… the most honorable… the most well trained… truly the best athletes in the world… We all know that the yen is #1 and the dollar id #2.  It is no different in the world of professional wrestling.  The wrestlers from Japan are #1 while the wrestlers from America are #2… and I have the best there is from Japan.  People of Dallas, what you are about to see is second to none.  It is the greatest import that Japan has ever sent to America.  You may want to turn away as Muta tears his opponent apart but you won’t be able to… He is oh so very dangerous and yet …. oh so very mesmerizing.  Today is the first step on the journey to the USWA Southern Heavyweight Title as Muta wants to right the wrongs of the Southern American people.  For each time he was shown no respect, he will take it out on one of your own!  Scott Steiner… you are powerful … you are a great wrestler …. But you are not the Great Muta!!!

Match #1

Muta just tore Steve Stone apart.  It wasn’t just the moves but the delivery.  It was like the chops, kicks and elbows came out of nowhere with lightening seed.  One of the most impressive moves was when Stone was out on the floor and Muta came flying over the top rope with a cross-body block.  It was a two fingered blast to the throat that left Stone gasping for air that ended the match with a pin.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Match #2:

Stunning Steve Austin with Madusa defeats Verlon Biggs with the Stunn Gun!

While the fans of Dallas were impressed with Austin as well of Medusa, it was his promo that turned someone off.  Austin was simply talking about how he planned on having a title around his waist in 1991 and he didn’t care if it was the USWA World TV title … the USWA Texas Title or ….

And this is when Mr. Magnificent Kevin Kelly showed up and started laughing about how Austin just showed up here in Dallas and he is talking about titles…

Austin just laughed and wondered what the Magnificent stood for in his name as it certainly wasn’t about his brain power as he has been in the USWA a whole lot longer than Kelly.  He wondered if it just took longer for information to reach way up there where his brain is as he is a tall drink of water but might be soon chopped down to normal size if he doesn’t get away from Austin right now.

Kelly steps to Austin…

WHAM… A right hand from Austin and down goes Kelly.

Austin and Medusa simply walk off and the fans are digging the newcomer even though he seems a bit arrogant.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Match #3:

Kevin Sullivan beats Greg West within an inch of his life and finishes him off with a double stomp to the stomach after beating him senseless in the Tree of Woo.

Kevin Sullivan:  Michael…  I am often misunderstood.  People see my soul as being from the Dark Side but I will tell you this… they are all wrong.  My soul is not from there or anywhere else for that matter…  and the reason for that is simple… I am Soul-less!  I feel nothing.  I don’t feel pain … I don’t feel remorse… and most of all, I feel nothing when I destroy those put in my path… Michael… you may have noticed my absence the last few weeks and that’s because I heard there are others like me.  There are others who feel nothing… others who are called Soul-less.  Well, I have found them.  I have brought them here to Texas… and together… we will destroy everything in our path.  Let me introduce them to you!

Out walk Cactus Jack and Big Van Vader…

Cactus Jack:  (speaking in a way that you can almost hear the evil laugh even though he isn’t laughing)  People of Texas…. Listen closely as I have only two things to say.  First it is time to do it the Cactus Jack way and that means that anything standing in my way will feel the wrath of Cactus Jack… and next… anyone who is guilty by association is guilty to me and will be dealt with in the Cactus Jack way… Bang Bang!

Big Van Vader:  (The 440 pound monster comes out wearing a mask of straps around his face and his body is heaving like he can’t control his anger):  Thank you Kevin Sullivan… Thank you for finding me… thank you for bringing us together.  I’ve always thought that I was alone but now… I know there are others… others who were built to destroy … others who are as you say … Soul-less.  The game has now become reality.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Match #4:

USWA Southern Champion Scott Steiner defeats Bad Boy Billy Black with a big powerbomb!  Bad Boy Billy helped to get Scott over with really dirty tactics where at one point he actually spit in the face of Steiner.  That, along with Scott connecting with multiple big power moves, all while having a charismatic smile on his face, helped to make him an instant fan favorite here in Texas.

Scott Steiner helped his cause with the fans by calling out the heels that we have already seen on today’s show and waring Kevin Sullivan about what is going to happen to him next week in the Sportatorium if he dared get in the ring with him!

Match #5:

Moondogs (Rex & Spot) over Sweet Brown Sugar & Terry Daniels when Rex nailed a double leg drop on Daniels.  It was during this match that Michael St. John informed us that it would be the Moondoogs getting a USWA World Title shot next week against the Road Warriors.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Main-Event Match:  USWA World Television Title Match:  Michael Wallstreet with Ms. Alexandria York vs Mil Mascaras ended in a DQ win for the Man of a Thousand Masks when Ms. York hit Mascaras with her briefcase.  While Mascaras “No Sold” the hit by York, it was enough for the referee to call for the bell.  Wallstreet and York did a great job today of getting some heat with the new Texas fans by bragging about their wealth, intelligence and use of “Everything” at their finger tips with their computer abilities.

After the bout we saw Wallstreet and York head for the hills as Mascaras was fuming.  We get a big time Road Warriors promo to end the show where the Texas folks hear Animal and Hawk screaming about what they are going to do to any team who dares to get in the ring with them.  Just like, Stunning Steve Austin, the Road Warriors use plenty of heel antics which seem to win over the crowd.  The “tweeners” are in great shape here in 1991 USWA Wrestling.

Michael St. John:  So long from the Lonestar State!

Big news as the USWA heads into Texas. Of course, Kevin's the perfect man to run the Texas operations.

Savage gets his trophy and shine but the Universal Heartthrob spoils the party. We've got a main event set darling.

With your stacked roster and joining forces with Texas, venturing into pay per view is the thing to do

The Battle Royals are a great booking idea. Kicks off the year with new contenders

WOW! JJ and Luger together! Can't wait for this

91 will be another wild year for the Lawler/First Family feud. Adding Rich into this mix escalates things to another level.

The Can Ams came to the right place for tag team competition

Always loved the Hart/Muta combination. Hart will work wonders with Muta in Texas.

Well, I'll give the Magnificent one credit for getting his name out there. Not sure he was expecting that response from Austin

More surprises as Sullivan joins forces with Cactus Jack and Vader. Talk about a trio of destruction. Watch out!

Steiner definitely has plenty of intimidating heels to work with

Moondogs are crazy enough to go toe to toe with the Road Warriors

Great seeing Mascaras back in the game. I'm sure the Texas fans got a thrill. Wallstreet once again finds a way to leave with the title.

Show ends on a high note with the Road Warriors. Judging by the fans reaction, these guys will be top money.

You started 91 with a bang brother!

What a duo of shows!

Fun fact. I have no clue if I shared it here, but my buddy was trained by Austin Idol just a couple of months ago to become a wrestler, and Idol was obsessed with making his finisher, The Heart Punch. Which is crazy to think of in 2026 as that being a finishing move.

Something else I want to commend you on is Scott Stiener as a singles champion. I remember Bruce saying on his podcast that he pushed for Scotty to win the Rumble in 93, but got vetoed. I am a huge Freakzilla fan, which I know we have years till that day happens, but cool seeing him with some gold in the USWA.

Anyways you have such a great collection of talent. It's fun seeing how you are booking everyone. Keep up the great work, Kev.

Great Muta with Gary Hart defeats Chief Joe Lightfoot with the top-rope moonsault.  Muta dominated this match with lightening quick savat kicks, elbows and suplexes.  This will mot likely be the last time Muta is in the curtain-jerker.

USWA Texas Heavyweight Title Match

Missing Link defeats Wild Bill Irwin © by DQ as Southern Justice (Tex Slexanger and Shanghai Pierce) make the save after Irwin was busted open with numerous Link headbutts.

Soul-les (Cactus Jack & Big Van Vader) with Kevin Sullivan destroy George South and Private Terry Daniel with the end mercifully coming after a Vader powerbomb!  Unfortunately, this mercy-ending was not enough h for Kevin Sullivan who ordered his men to continue to destroy their opponents which they gladly did!  That is until the Steiner brothers (Scott and Rick) came out to make the save.  This is the first time we have seen Rick since his injury last Halloween.  You could tell he still was a 100% as he still had a noticeable limp.

“Stunning” Steve Austin with Madusa defeated “Mr. Magnificent” Kevin Kelly with the Stun Gun putting the arrogant Kelly in his place.  Madusa even took pleasure in this win with a smirk at Kelly as he was left in the center of the ring flat on his back.

USWA World Television Title Match

Michael Wallstreet with Ms. Alexandria York wrestled “The Man of a Thousand Masks” Mil Mascaras to a 15- minute time limit draw.

USWA World Tag Team Title Match

The Road Warriors © defeat The Moondogs after a decent brawl when Animal and Hawk connected with the Doomsday Device on Spot.

USWA Southern Title Match

Scott Steiner defeated Kevin Sullivan by DQ as he had Sullivan locked in the camel clutch (Steiner Recliner) but Cactus Jack and Vader attacked from behind.  This lead to a short 3-1 beating of Scott until Rick hit the ring.  Rick injected some momentum into the brawl and the Steiners held their own for a short period of time… that is until Sullivan dove under the bottom rope and returned with a golden spike which he drove into the injured leg of Rick Steiner. The scream from Rick was jarring to many in the crowd as the entire babyface locker-room rushed in to end the melee.

Mike Graham defeated “Bad Boy” Billy Black by submission with a Figure Four.

The Cam-Am Express (Doug Furnas & Dan Kroffat) defeat the Nightmares (Ted Allen & Randy Colley under masks) as Furnas connected with a German Suplex on Nightmare #1.

The Dirty White Boys defeat the Ebony Express (The Huffman Brothers) when DWB #1 (Tony Anthony) was able to hide an illegal object from the ref and nail Stevie Ray in the back of the head.  One thing for sure was that the Huffman brother’s size, speed, power and charisma got over with the fans … well at least some of them.

Lex Luger with JJ Dillion destroys Action Jackson and finally puts him out of his misery with the Torture Rack.

Interesting thing was that Luger showboated long enough that the competitors for the next match had already made their way to the ring…

USWA World Title Match:  “Macho Man” Randy Savage © vs Terry Taylor

Taylor was first to the ring and greeted Lex like they were old pals and that he was so glad Luger was in Memphis.  Taylor proceeded to the ring where he tried his best to incite the fans.  Macho Man was next and he and Luger met about half way up the ramp.  Luger smirked at Savage and Savage went right back at him…  as Savage turned to go the ring. Luger gave him a big clothesline to the back of the head and then continued up the ramp!

Terry Taylor saw his chance and rushed to the ramp and dragged Savage to the ring where he went after him at full force!  The fans started to become worried that Savage was going to loose the title but he eventually recovered and really gave it to Taylor with the top rope elbow drop coming about 15 minutes into the bout and giving the champ the win.  You could tell Savage was fuming and all his thoughts were on Luger… Lance Russell made it clear that if he is distracted next week at Memphis Madhouse, the Universal Heartthrob Austin Idol could very well walk out with the world title

USWA Southern Tag Title Match:  The Rock n Roll Express vs The Destruction Crew

This match ended in a double-countout as the two teams where brawling out on the floor for a long time.  Last time, these two teams went to the time-limit draw and this one saw the double-countout.  Something needs to be done to make sure we get a clear winner next time they meet.

Main Event:

The First Family (Tommy Rich, Honky Tonk Man, and “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert) with Jimmy Hart and Missy Hyatt defeated “The King” Jerry Lawler, Brian Lawler and Jeff Jarrett when Tommy Rich used an ether-soaked towel to knock out Brian Lawler while the ref was distracted with The King and Jarrett brawling on the outside with Gilbert and Honky Tonk Man.  After the match, Jimmy Hart rushed into the ring and had Wildfire hold the knocked out Brian Lawler over his knee was Jimmy Hart gave him a “spanking.”  When The King saw this he bolted towards the ring but the First Family managed to escape and head back to the locker dodging debris as they laughed hysterically.

Muta continues to dazzle Dallas.

Wild Bill and Southern Justice are still going strong.

Stunning Steve with a Magnificent victory.

Wallstreet hasn't cracked the code on Mascaras.

Roadies put the Moondogs down.

Big night for Soul-less as the tear through their opponents and strike out at the Steiners.

Memphis.

Graham tames the Bad Boy.

Can Am Express is going full steam ahead.

The Hoffmans see just how dirty these white boys are.

Luger gets an easy win and sends the champ a message. Savage powers through and takes his anger out on Taylor. All the while, Idol is lurking in the background.

RnR and DC are having trouble figuring out who the better team is.

Major embarrassment for the Prince.

Muta gets his showcase and now there's nowhere to go but up

I think Southern Justice saved Bill's life

Looks like Medusa relished Austin's win over Mr. Magnificent

Great seeing Mascaras back in the game and frustrating Wallstreet. Can York's computer figure Mascaras out?

Moondogs are nuts but the Road Warriors snack on that

The fans loved seeing Rick back but it doesn't last long thanks to Sullivan. Scott will need some backup dealing with Soulless

Over to Memphis

Graham's technical wrestling pays off

I'm eager to watch the Can Am make their mark here

DWB's get the win but the Ebony Express turn some heads

Well, it didn't take Luger long to make his presence known in the main event scene. Savage vs. Luger will be money!

It's Memphis so that means RnR and the Destruction Crew will get a great gimmick blow off match

Oh man the Prince gets embarrassed big time. I can't imagine the revenge Lawler's going to get.

MEMPHIS MADHOUSE TAG TEAM BATTLE ROYAL:

It is now time for the Memphis Madhouse Tag Team Battle Royal. The rules are as follows… two teams will enter the ring and wrestle for 2-minutes. At the end of the two minutes, another team will enter the match. Elimination can occur at any time when an individual is thrown over the top rope to the floor with both feet touching the ground. When one member of a team is eliminated, both members of the team are eliminated.  After all 10 teams have entered, the final remaining team standing in the ring will be the winner and be awarded a USWA World Tag Team Title match next month in the HemisFair Arena in San Antonio at “Texas Tough” along with a check for $25,000. Now, without further ado… the team that drew number 1… the one and only … Rock n Roll Express! And next, the team that drew number 2… Southern Justice… Shanghai Pierce and Tex Slazenger!

The RnR Express come down to a huge ovation from the crowd as Lance Russell wonders just how long they will be able to last in a match like this… Dave Brown wonders the same thing as this match lends itself to some of the larger teams in the match… the same cannot be said for Southern Justice as the crowd is all over them.

The RnR Express and Southern Justice have a fun little 2-minute struggle for momentum with the Express using speed and quickness while Southern Justice wanted to turn this into a slugfest. Wild Bill is doing everything he can to disrupt the Express.  WHAM… double dropkick on Tex and he staggers to the ropes… but not over… yet that is!  WHAM … a second double dropkick sends Tex out to the floor.  Wild Bill is fuming and yelling at both Tex and Shanghai as Ricky and Morton high-five each other and wait for the next team to be called as the timer is running down…

Number 3 is… The Destruction Company!!! Oh my!  These two teams have some unfinished business as Enos and Bloom just went to a time-limit draw with the Express as Ricky and Robert were lucky that they left the Midsouth Coliseum last month with the Rock n Roll Express lucky to be leaving with their titles.  Lance and Dave put over the fact that it seems unlucky that these two top teams in the USWA had such unlucky draws!  After two minutes, all these teams accomplished was proving they don’t like each other and they are still going at it hot and heavy as the next number is getting ready to be called.  Suddenly, we see Enos and Bloom both grab their construction helmets and crack Ricky Morton over the head.  Robert is doing everything he can to not allow his partner to be tossed over the top rope.

Number 4:  The Assassins (Don Bass & Laney Kean under the masks) are next to the ring.  This is one rugged duo who are known to do anything to get what they want.  They had right in and attack Robert.  For the next two minutes, it is 2-1 on both sides of the ring.  Ricky trying to hold off the Destruction Crew and Robert trying to hold off the Assassins.  They are just hoping that it will be someone they are on the same side with that comes to the ring next….

Number 5 – The Ebony Express, Booker T and Stevie Ray, come to the ring… Not much is known about these two brothers as they’ve only had a couple of matches in the USWA.   Their size and physique are unquestionable but this could mean a quick end to the Rock n Roll Express or it could be their lifeline…. As Booker T and Stevie Ray hit the ring, the fans are …. Relieved … The Ebony Express goes right after the Assassins.  This gives Robert some freedom to join Ricky as we are two teams battling it out on both sides of the ring.  So far, it is only Southern Justice to have been eliminated!

Number 6– It’s the Moondogs… Rex and Spot both carrying large bones with them to the ring…  Lance … admitting there is nothing in the Moondogs style that lends itself to the technical side of rassling but wonders if this is their type of match…  Rex and Spike hit the ring and immediately join the Assassins as both mysterious duos try to toss Booker T and Stevie Ray to the ring but this is turning out to be a difficult task.  Booker T are strong, agile and ready to fight!

Number 7 – Oh My Gosh… It’s the Steiners!  Scott and Rick are hear!!  We have not seen them together since Halloween when Rick was injured during their bout with Road Warriors.  It was just last week that we saw Cactus Jack and Vader attack Rick who was still walking with a cane but here he is!!!  The question Lance asks Dave Brown is “should Rick Steiner be in the ring or is he risking more damage.”  At least for the beginning, it looks like the answer is “yes” as Rick and Scott are hitting everything in sight.  It doesn’t matter to them if it’s heels or babyfaces… they know the way to victory is to be the last one standing.  Unfortunately, it is a double running clothesline that sends the Rock n Roll Express tumbling from the ring.  It seemed like they were going after the Destruction Company but hit Ricky instead and he flew over the top rope and out onto the floor with one hell of a bump!  Robert quickly went to make sure his partner was ok and the duo grabbed their Southern Titles with them and headed up the ramp knowing that they give it their all.  It turned out that Lance and Dave Brown were right… this was a tough style of match for the RnR Express.  The Steiners not about to take a break … turn their attention to the other side of the ring and fly at Assassin #1 with a double clothesline, this time to back of the head and #1 rolls over the top rope and out onto the floor.  The Steiners have been together for less than a minute and have eliminated two teams… Would you expect anything else….

Still Fighting:  The Destruction Crew, The Ebony Express, The Moondogs and the Steiner Brothers

Eliminated:  Southern Justice, the Rock n Roll Express and the Assassins

Number 8 – Cactus Jack and Vader… Soul-les is here and they are being led to the ring by the maniac himself, Kevin Sullivan.  Slowly, methodically, this duo weighing over 700 pounds, climb to the apron and enter the ring.     Cactus Jack and Vader are so confident… or maybe so unorthodox, that they seem confident enough to split up in the ring.  Vader goes right after the Ebony Express while Cactus Jack gets all mixed up with the Destruction Crew. The Steiners seem content to send the Moondogs packing and have yet to even notice Vader and Cactus Jack.  Maybe this is on purpose as they just want teams to get eliminated and they don’t care who it is but probably not… the Steiners don’t back down from anyone and if they saw Cactus Jack and Vader it would be a war for what they did to Rick last week.

Still Fighting:  The Destruction Crew, The Ebony Express, The Moondogs, the Steiner Brothers and Soul-les (Vader & Cactus Jack)

Eliminated:  Southern Justice, the Rock n Roll Express and the Assassins

Number 9- It’s the Cam Am Express  …. Doug Furnas and Dan Kroffat …Furnas waving and American flag and Kroffat with the Canadian flag, sprint to the ring as Lance Russell reminds everyone that Furnas was a former NFL football player who was a star running back for the University of Tennessee… what a way to get this new team over to the people of Nashville.  Right as the Cam-Am Express was getting ready to enter the ring, we see Booker T rush across the ring and nail Spike with an unexpected Superkick … Spike staggers back to the ropes and tumble over.  It is now that the Steiners lay eyes on Cactus Jack and Vader… the two teams meet in the center of the ring and just start laying into one another.

Still Fighting:  The Destruction Crew, The Ebony Express, the Steiner Brothers, Soul-les (Vader & Cactus Jack), and the Cam- Am Express

Eliminated:  Southern Justice, the Rock n Roll Express, the Assassins,  and the Moondogs

Number 10 - The Dirty White Boys hit the ring  … And we now basically have three Texas Tornado Matches going on at the same time… The Destruction Crew vs The Ebony Express, the Cam-Am Express vs the Dirty White Boys and The Steiner Brothers vs Soul-les.  Interesting turn here… both heel teams find a way to eliminate their enemies as The Ebony Express and the Cam-Am Express go out.  This leaves what looks like real trouble for the Steiner Brothers… Soul-les, The Destruction Crew and the Dirty White Boys can join forces against Scott and Rick!

Still Fighting:  The Destruction Crew, the Steiner Brothers, and Soul-les (Vader & Cactus Jack),

Eliminated:  Southern Justice, the Rock n Roll Express, the Assassins, the Moondogs, the Ebony Express, and the Cam Am Express.

Sensing the trouble, the Steiners, maybe for the first time in the lifes, back towards the corner as the know the numbers are against them.  The Destruction Crew and Vader close in on Rick and The Dirty White Boys and Cactus Jack make their way slowly towards Scott.  WHAM… in what is one of the most memorable moment of the night, Vader grabs Mike Bloom from the Destruction Crew and whips him across the ring at the same time Cactus Jack grabbed DWB #2 and whipped him across the ring.  Bloom and the Dirty White Boy have a nasty collision in the center of the ring and stagger backwards.  Vader and Jack sprint across the ring and right passed each other.  WHAM… Vader nails DWB #2 with a huge clothesline as Cactus Jack nails Bloom with a huge shoulder tackle.  Both DWB and Blook tumble over the top rope eliminating their teams.

We are now left with the Steiners vs Soul-les and the winner earns a USWA World title shot next month against the Road Warriors!  While both teams are full of power moves, it is nearly impossible to get their big bodies over the top rope.  We see slams, suplexes, and splashes but neither team can get anyone over the top rope… that is until Kevin Sullivan gets involved as he once again nails Rick in the right leg with the Golden Spike.  Rick is and struggling to help out Scott.  Scotty does his best and it able to hold over Vader and Cactus Jack for a period of time but after numerous double team moves, Scott is down.  This allows Vader and Cactus Jack to double team the still injured Rick.  Finally, just before Scott is able to make the save, we see Vader hit a clothesline to the back of the head of Rick and he tumbled over the top rope!

The Winners… Soul-les!

USWA WOLRD TITLE MATCH:

Randy “Macho Man” Savage & Miss. Elizabeth vs “The Universal Heartthrob” Austin Idol

Stipulation:  If Idol losses, he must retire.

Idol struts to the ring wearing yellow and turquoise spandex tights, a navy blue sparkling vest, sunglasses and a black and white spotted bandana.  He is yelling at any fan that will listen to about who is the best every in Memphis!

Maybe Austin Idol was right when he claimed that Macho Man was just immatating The Universal Heartthrob.  Savage came out with a purple, navy blue and pink long robe, matching cowboy hat and sunglasses.  What separated the flare of Idol and Savage was the very classy Miss. Elizabeth who came out wearing a sparkling silver, thin strapped, short dress.

Miss. Elizabeth quickly got the attention of Austina Idol who gestured to her that they could leave together after the match.  Knowing the jealousy of Savage, this move was either a huge mistake or calculated briallance to get Savage off his game.  Either way, it got a reaction as it was the babyfaced champ who attacked before the bell.  This fire gave Savage the early momentum which was full of big elbows, knees and punches!  We even so Macho Man with a nice drop kick that landed squarely on Idol’s head. With Idol down, Savage took some time and was yelling at Miss. Elizabeth.  We’ve seen this before as Savage points his anger in the wrong direction.  Next, the Macho Man scampers to the top rope but Idol leaps up and nails him with a low blow.  Savage takes a big bump to the matt and is rolling in agony as Idol points to his own head like he is the genius.

Idol with a running knee to the back of Savage… Savage rolls around the matt in agony.

Idol rams Macho Man’s head into the turnbuckle and follows it up with 3 huge right hands!

Idol with the cover…. 2 count!

Idol elbow drop to the knee of Savage and know he goes to work on the lower body as he is trying to set Savage up for the Vagas Leglock.

Knees to the hamstring, elbows to the knees, ankle locks… the fans begin to wonder if Savage will even be able to walk during the match!

Idol locks in the Vagas Leglock and Savage is writhing in agony.  Idol, near the ropes, uses them for added leverage and Savage is pulling his own hair out but he won’t submit!  There is no escape as he is near the center of the ring.

Savage starts to twist and turn as he is going for the reverse….

Yes… Savage now has Idol in the reversed figure four and Idol is screaming… but it is short-lived as Idol is in the ropes to force the break.

Both men stagger to their feet very slowly…

Idol with a weak right hand but Savage shrugs it off.  The two exchange a few blows but you can see Macho Man is on the come!

Savage with a big right hand and down goes Idol.  Savage whips him into the corner and hits the splash as he followed him in.  Savage to the second rope and begins the 10-punch sequence as the fans count along with him!

Savage again to the top rope but Idol once again staggers up …

WHAM… Savage leaps and nails Idol with the double ax-handle off the tope rope!

1…2…3!

Savage survives!  He grabs his title and holds it high as the fans celebrate.  Fans of Memphis might be just as excited that Idol is done in the ring as they were that Savage won the match.

Interesting thing here was that Miss. Elizabeth walked up the aisle as Savage celebrated in the ring.  Has she had enough of Savage and his temper…

MEMPHIS MADHOUSE BATTLE ROYAL:

Lance Russell:  It is now time for Memphis Madhouse. The rules are as follows… two men will enter the ring and wrestle for 2-minutes. At the end of the two minutes, another man will enter the match. Elimination can occur at any time when an individual is thrown over the top rope to the floor with both feet touching the ground. After all 20 participants have entered, the final remaining man standing in the ring will be the winner and earn a USWA World Title shot at “Texas Tough” along with a check for $50,000. Now, without further ado… the individual who drew number 1… “the Wildman from the Sudan, Abdullah the Butcher!  The man who drew number 2… none other than the King of Wrestling, Jerry Lawler!  The crowd moans as their hero has drawn an awful number as he chances of winning are almost none.

Adbullah comes down to a hostile crowd as Lance wonders just how long a man in his condition can last in a match like this… Dave Brown counters that he isn’t sure anyone can life the nearly 400 pound Butcher over the top rope.

Abbie and the King have an interesting 2 minutes as Lawler dances away from Abbie and nails him with a few jabs in the process.  Abbie rushes the King in the corner but misses and knocks himself to the ground.  Lawler quickly to the middle rope for the fist drop but Abbie just lies there and the King can’t budge him toward the ropes as the timer runs down!

Number 3 is… the leader of Soul-less… the purely evil… Kevin Sullivan.  Sullivan rushes at Lawler and the two are like two pitbulls fighting in the center of the ring.  These two have not seen each other in a long time but Lawler and Sullivan have enough knowledge of one another to know better then slow down their attack.  Abbie is up and now we see Lawler in trouble as Sullivan and The Butcher go to work on the King.

Number 4 -  Mike Graham….While Graham is new to the USWA, he is not new to Sullivan and Abbie from there time in Florida.  He rushes the ring and grabs Sullivan and nails him with a big right hand.  It is now Lawler vs Abbie and Graham vs Sullivan.  Nobody has a clear advantage and the fans are wondering who is next as the tide could turn either way.

Number 5 - Here comes Michael Wallsteet who is lead to the ring by Ms. Alexandria York and her briefcase.  At first this looks bad for Lawler and Graham as it gives the heels a 3-2 advantage but York whispers in the ear of Wallstreet just as he enters the ring.  Wallstreet simply heads to a vacant corner of the ring and hangs out.  York and her scouting report seem to be telling Wallstreet to get involved as little as possible! !

Number 6 – the USWA Texas Heavyweight Champion …. Wild Bill Irwin.  Wild Bill rushes the ring and quickly sizes up the competition.  He decides that is it best to get rid of Lawler whenever you can so he joins Abbie in the attack on the King!  Somehow Lawler manages to escape the rush of Irwin and Irwin slams into Abbie.  Abbie, not really ure what is going on goes after Irwin while Lawler saw Wallstreet just hanging out and decides that Wallstreet’s money has bought him enough of a rest and goes right after him.  We know have 4 singles matches going on at the same time but there is no wrestling involved.  It is a brawl or should we say Madhouse!

Number 7 - Here comes “No Class” Don Bass …. He’s been in Memphis long enough to know that the King is the one that controls everything so just like Wild Bill, he goes right for the King… Funny thing here was that Lawler saw him rushing in and nailed him with a back body drop right over the top rope.  “No Class” has just established the record for quickest elimination… 5 seconds.

Number 8 – Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert joined by both Missy Hyatt and Jimmy Hart… boy does Missy make an entrance!!!  Gilbert runs down and heads right to the Mike Graham-Kevin Sullivan brawl.  This 2-1 attack proved too much for Graham and in the bump of the night, we see Hot Stuff hoist Graham up for the Hot Shot but Sullivan push him over the top rope from the suplex position… this might be the last we see of Graham as the crowd gasped.  Sullivan and Gilbert now split up as Sullivan joins Abbie in his fight with against Wild Bill will Gilbert attacks his long-time foe, Jerry Lawler who is battling Michael Wallstreet.

Number 9 - The Prince of Memphis… that’s right is Brian Lawler rushing down the ramp to save his Dad.  Brian goes right for Gilbert which allows Lawler to re-establish his fight with Wallstreet.  While the Lawler’s gladly dealt with their foes, Sullivan demanded Abbie toss Wild Bill over the top rope which he did with no problem.

Still Fighting:  Abbie, Jerry Lawler, Kevin Sullivan, Michael Wallstreet, Eddie Gilbert and Brian Lawler

Eliminated:  Don Bass, Mike Graham, and Bill Irwin

Number 10 -  … here come … from parts unknow… The Missing Link!  Link goes right for both Abbie and Sullivan.  While this seems like a mismatch, his one move, the headbutt, has both men staggering.  The Lawlers vs Wallstreet and Gilbert is still going hot and heavy.

Number 11 - Here comes the son of the promoter, Jeff Jarrett. JJ heads right into the Lawlers/Wallstreet & Gilbert melee and for the first time all night the babyfaces have an advantage.  On the other side of the ring, Sullivan and Abbie have turned the tide and have Missing Link in trouble.

Number 12 - From the Land of the Rising Sun… here comes the Great Muta led to the ring by Gary Hart.  The mysterious Muta, wearing black and red face paint tonight, heads right over to Brian Lawler and nails him with a Super Kick… Brian Lawler topples over the top rope as Muta makes his mark in a hurry!  Next, we see Sullivan stomping on Missing Link who is caught in the Tree of Woo!  With Link basically out of it, Sullivan props him up along the ropes and Abbie comes running into him with a big body smash and out goes Link!  Now we have Lawler vs Wallstreet, JJ vs Muta and Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert while Sullivan is smacking Abbie just to get him more fired up!

Still Fighting:  Abbie, Jerry Lawler, Kevin Sullivan, Michael Wallstreet, Eddie Gilbert, Jeff Jarrett and Muta

Eliminated:  Don Bass, Mike Graham, Bill Irwin, Brian Lawler and Missing Link

Number 13 – “Stunning” Steve Austin rushes to the ring with Medusa right behind him.  Austin, still holding a grudge on how he lost the USWA World Television Title, joins The King in his battle of Michael Wallstreet while Medusa circles the ring and is looking to attack Miss. York and/or Missy Hyatt… whoever she finds first.  The catfight is on and Medusa is taking care of business!  Stun Gun by Austin on Wallstreet and he takes a nasty fall to the floor.  WHAM… body slam on the floor by Medusa on Miss. York!  What a nasty exit for The York Foundation!  This distraction allowed JJ to send Eddie Gilbert packing as he simply tossed him over the top rope.  Sullivan and Abbie are all fired up and move into the frey and attack the King.  The King is in trouble as he is hanging on by a thread… Wham… Austin with the save and we now have Austin and Lawler vs Sullivan and Abbie while JJ and Muta continue their brawl while Medusa is the last cat standing!

Number 14 – from South Africa… Steve Simpson.  The well-built fan favorite is not very well known here in Memphis so the fans don’t get to excited and they really have no idea what to expect.  Simpson does his best to endear himself to the Memphis fans and goes right after Abbie to help the King!  WHAM… big flying cross body block on The Madman from the Sudan and both Simpson and Abbie topple over the top rope!  That might have been the quickest exit ever for a match like this but it came with a huge ovation as Lawler’s chances have just greatly increased.  It is JJ vs Muta while Austin and Lawler are double teaming Kivin Sullivan.

Still Fighting:  Jerry Lawler, Kevin Sullivan,  Jeff Jarrett, Muta and Steve Austin

Eliminated:  Don Bass, Mike Graham, Bill Irwin, Brian Lawler, Missing Link, Michael Wallstreet, Eddie Gilbert, Steve Simpson and Abdullah the Butcher

Number 15 – Here comes the Nubian Terror, Moadib…this 300-pound muscular black man is also new to the people of Memphis but unlike Steve Simpson, he immediately has the fans on edge.  He is swinging that double-bladed medieval ax like his is going to kill someone.  Luckily for all, he dropped it before getting in the ring but he heads right over to the leader of Soul-les, Kevin Sullivan and goes to work on his attacks… the King and Steve Austin!  Muta has JJ is a world of trouble and is climbing to the top rope for what will later be called a Moonsault.

Number 16 – Mr. Magnificent… Kevin Kelly… WHAM… before Kelly even gets to the ring, Moadib whips Lawler so hard into the corner that the entire ring seems to quiver.  Problem for Muta was that Lawler was whipped into the corner he was preparing for the Moonsault and this sent Muta out onto the floor.  Even in defeat, Muta shows amazing skill as he back-flipped from the top rope to the floor landing on his feet!!  Moadib seems ready to murder Lawler as Sullivan stomps on JJ.  Austin heads right for Kevin Kelly to finish off another person he has beef with lately.

Still Fighting:  Jerry Lawler, Kevin Sullivan,  Jeff Jarrett, Steve Austin, Moadib and Kevin Kelly.

Eliminated:  Don Bass, Mike Graham, Bill Irwin, Brian Lawler, Missing Link, Michael Wallstreet, Eddie Gilbert, Steve Simpson, Abdullah the Butcher, Muta

Number 17 – Honky Tonk Man…. HTM seems to really take his time getting to the ring.  He is in no hurry and wants to increase his chances of winning by spending less time in the match.  This might have been a mistake as by the time he finally got to the ring, two people who might have been on his side where eliminated…. Moadib rushed as Lawler like he was going to decapitate him but Lawler moved in the nic of time and Moadib went summersaulting over the top rope ala Ric Flair.  This allowed Lawler, Austin and JJ to triple team Kevin Sullivan and send him over the top rope.  HTM looks like he is walking into the lion’s den as Lawler, Austin and JJ are all waiting for him!  In fact, HTM has taken so much time waiting to get to the ring we are ready for our next entrant!

Still Fighting:  Jerry Lawler, Jeff Jarrett, Steve Austin, Kevin Kelly, and HTM

Eliminated:  Don Bass, Mike Graham, Bill Irwin, Brian Lawler, Missing Link, Michael Wallstreet, Eddie Gilbert, Steve Simpson, Abdullah the Butcher, Muta, Moadib, and Kevin Sullivan

Number 18 – The Nightstalker…we have only seen a few matches of the Nightstalker here in Memphis as he was part of Smoky Mountain Wrestling and challenged Steve Austin a few times when he was the USWA World Television Champion.  What it does here is put Austin in some trouble as now the Nightstalker and Kevin Kelly join forces against Stunning Steve as Lawler and JJ go to work on the HTM!  These 2-1 battles both continue into our next entrant!

Number 19 – Wildfire Tommy Rich… the crowd moans in agony!  It looked like the King was finally cayching a break and then his arch-enemy has to come down to the ring.  Tommy is all smiles as he is looking forward to taking care of the King.  HTM survived and now has help on the way.  Somehow, Austin has also survived against his huge enemies.  Who will be #20?

Still Fighting:  Jerry Lawler, Jeff Jarrett, Steve Austin, Kevin Kelly, HTM, Nightstalker and Tommy Rich

Number 20 -  Here comes The Total Package, Lex Luger!!!  Pec Flexing and strutting all the way to the ring, Lex is led down the ramp by a man who is full of smiles, JJ Dillon!   Lex enters the ring, scans the situation and hits the ring ropes and couple of times to get himself all stretched out.  The in the move of the night, Lex rushes at the Austin vs Kelly/Nightstalker melee and nails all three with a double-clothesline.  All three tumble to the floor.  Austin continues his attack on both Kelly and the Nightstalker even though he has been eliminated until the two flee to the locker room.  Austin and Medusa leave to a big ovation.

Back in the ring, Lex simply walks over and grabs JJ off of HTM and locks him in the Torture Rack and struts around the ring with JJ strapped across his shoulders.  Now HTM and Tommy Rich attack Lawler!

Lex simply tosses JJ to the floor and rushes in with another double clothesline.  This time it was to the delight of the fans as HTM and Wildfire tumble out.  In a matter of minutes, Lex has eliminated 5 men.  It is now down to Luger and Lawler.  Luger is fresh but Lawler is exhausted as he has was involved sense the beginning.  Lex with some more flexing as Lawler pulls down the strap.  The two go another 3 or 4 minutes and it is pretty one-sided with Lex doing all of the work.  Lex climbs to the top rope and looks for a double ax handle but…

WHAM… Lawler rushed at him and Luger tumbles doing a slit across the ropes and seems to be in agony in the worst place possible.  The crowd sees this as Lawler’s chance.  The King comes over and tries to force Luger to the floor but Luger simply shrugs his head “NO.”  Luger with a mighty yank of the top rope and Lawler comes flying over to the floor!

Lex Luger wins Memphis Madhouse… the $50,000 and the USWA World Title shot next month at Texas Tough!

I hope the HemisFair Arena is insured because nothing good can happen when you put the Road Warriors in the same ring with Cactus Jack AND Vader.

The Macho Man retains the World title and sends the Universal Heartthrob into retirement.

The King made a hell of an effort but the Total Package claims both the money and the World title shot.
