This Week ... in Central States Wrestling #1

- While the Central States territory has been largely vacant minus the occasional spot shows here and there, promoter Bob Giegel has moved forward with giving the area a go. Iowa, Kansas and Missouri appear to be the target states for the territory, at least to begin with.

- The former St. Louis promotion brought in bigger names which may have been one of the reasons for it's downfall. Geigel has decided to go with the unknown and younger talent route. If the want for wrestling is there, bigger names (ie. higher paid talent) can always be brought in but Giegel said "It's an easier pill to swallow if no one comes out to the matches rather than what St. Louis tried, blowing the bank on just a couple of wrestlers".

- As a test over the past week, Central States has been putting on house shows, testing the market as well as setting up their weekly circuit. To not oversaturate the first week's "blitz" of shows, Geigel's been running short cards to create some buzz. As has been found, the gates have been good so the interest is certainly there for the time being. Geigel says "Wrestling fans are a fickle sort, so you have to strike when the iron is hot."

- Two programs have been featured on the shows. The main event has been the handsome high flying Ricky Santana and the ring veteran Tom Renesto Jr. but the "star" of this program has been manager Captain Lou Albano. If you ask, Lou will be happy to tell you himself that he's the star of the whole promotion and maybe he's got something there as the fans have flocked to him, no matter what he's done. Lou's been all over the place promoting himself as well as doing whatever he can to help Renesto win. Though it hasn't worked out well for Renesto every time, he has picked up some victories thanks to his manager!

- The second feud has been between the babyface Surfers, Ray Odyssey and The Sandman with Miss Peaches against Downtown Bruno's Interns. Bruno has done what he can to help his men win but Miss Peaches has often been the equalizer, keep Bruno out of the picture.

- With successful house shows, television would be the next step for the promotion. A weekly show does wonders in drumming up business for the road. No word yet as to when it might happen but rumors have been swirling of preliminary talks with station KDNL, Channel 30 with Friday evenings being the target.

Wrestling at the Chase
Central States Wrestling
Friday 4-22-1989
from the Chase Park Plaza Hotel
St. Louis, Missouri

Announce Team: Jay French and "The Professor" Marty Goldstein

Match #1
Jason Sterling pinned Kevin Clark.
The barefoot Canadian and son of the Missing Link proved to be a tough individual against an equally tough opponent. Following the match, the two shook hands in a show of good sportsmanship.

Match #2
The Cuban Assassin and Omar Atlas brawled to a Double Disqualification.
Both veterans refused to listen to the referee.

Match #3
Anthony Durante & Gary Wolfe defeated The Allen Boys.
Tag team action with two very young teams.

Promoter Bob Geigel came out during a break in the action and announced the main event as a title match for the Central States Heavyweight Belt. In honor of all those who have wrestled at the Chase in the past, the match would be a purely scientific affair!

Match #4
The Interns w/Downtown Bruno lost to The Sandman & Ray Odyssey w/Miss Peaches.
It could have gone either way but Miss Peaches took Bruno out of the picture which pushed her boys to victory.

Match #5
Central States Heavyweight Title Match
Tom Renesto Jr. w/ Lou Albano won over Ricky Santana to become the CSW Champion.
One would have thought a scientific match would be more advantageous to Renesto but Santana was up to the task and showed his mat skills.

Back and forth the two went with several near pinfalls to get the fans out of their seats. Albano with some trickery, passed a roll of quarters to Renesto before distracting the referee to allow Renesto to cold cock Santana. Ricky Santana was not going to kick out of this one. Tom Renesto Jr. won the title.

The fans did their best to inform the referee but to no avail as Albano yanked his man from the ring before someone changed their mind.

I didn't know Link had a son. Seems to know what he's doing.

Shocker in the main event as Captain Lou turns on his man to hand the title to Renesto.

He actually had two sons that wrestled. I don't remember seeing the other brother, but I do remember seeing Jason wrestle in Texas. Not the biggest guy but do remember him being pretty good. Opener/lower mid-card guy but was always a decent match.

That certainly is a shocker to me because Capt. Lou has ALWAYS been the manager of Tom Renesto Jr.

Once again, it's so great to see you bring the old school territory back to life.

I think Geigel is playing this smart. Also, props to you for giving the lesser known guys a spotlight.

Always great seeing any formation of the Interns. Gotta love Bruno.

Captain Lou knows talent when he sees it. The man Renesto is now the champ.

Wrestling at the Chase
Central States Wrestling
Friday 5-3-1989
from the Chase Park Plaza Hotel
St. Louis, Missouri

Announce Team: Jay French and "The Professor" Marty Goldstein

Match #1
Kevin Clark pinned Ken Jugan.
Clark bounced back from a tough loss last time to Sterling with a win over Jugan though it was not as easy as Clark had told the fans.

Match #2
Jason Sterling defeated Todd Morton.
Fast paced match that saw Sterling go over Morton with a flying cross body block.

Match #3
The Sandman & Ray Odyssey w/Miss Peaches went over Anthony Durante & Gary Wolfe by DQ.
The Surfers in a hard hitting match against the very physical youngsters came out on the winning end when Bruno's Interns stormed the ring and attacked. All four men chased them off before shaking hands in the middle of the ring.

Promoter Bob Geigel came out during a break in the action and announced that next week's  main event would be a rematch of the previous bout ... AND ... if Bruno or the Interns interfered, they would be banned from Central States Wrestling for 30 days!

Match #4
Central States Heavyweight Title Match
Tom Renesto Jr. w/ Lou Albano successfully defended his title against Omar Atlas.
Atlas brought everything he had in his veteran arsenal to take the belt off Renesto and nearly succeeded after suplexing the Champ all over the ring. Renesto weathered the storm thanks to his manager.

Renesto shook off the cobwebs and again thanks to Albano was able to pick up the win and defend his title, using a foreign object slipped to him.

I think one of the best things you can do with this promotion is continue the fan interaction piece. That announcement for Bruno next week would pop the fans and you could almost do a whole segment right there which is something I would find difficult with the WWF.
