Last few minutes. Match looks pretty okay, but nothing better than that. Jericho retains the cruiserweight title. Gene Okerlund walks right by Jericho and Jericho seems offended. Gene chastises Malenko over losing this match, talking some bullshit about oddsmakers. Gene is tough on Malenko, who simply responds by just saying he's going home. Gene was such an ass here.

I loved this match and thought it was pretty great. I liked how this was laid out -- a hot start before settling into some really good matwork, then bringing it back up again near the end when they went balls out with highspots and nearfalls. I think they may have overdone stuff near the end, but I still respect what they set out to do. I'll freely admit that I might just be starved for great matches in 1998, but I don't think the excess that was admittedly here was enough to bring this down too much. This had to be one of the first examples of FMW working a major match that went this long that included no weapons shots or outside brawling. I know they existed for years before this actually, but I mean in the new post-Onita vision of FMW as more of a traditional wrestling company. "Ambitious" is a good word to describe this, but I'd also call this something that is endearing even when it's flawed. It's cool to see these guys thinking big and trying to deliver an epic at a time when it didn't seem like anyone else in wrestling had that in mind. Those who want something efficient probably won't like this, but I loved the spirit of it all.

You're in the minority, but I'm with you on that one.

WWE made a nice effort to tone down their style for many years, but it seems like needless risks are creeping up again and have been for a little while. When the bar is so high that a superplex through a table is just a highspot and not a credible finish, there's a serious problem with the style. Ambrose-Rollins was a very good match, but they took it several steps too far. It's also amazing how meaningless weapons shots have become.

Because he punched Vince and would have been countersued. That's discussed on the first few pages, along with the counterpoint to Bret coming out with the title on Nitro.

Whether the contract was breached early on or not, it was breached in the end, because they did a finish that Bret Hart did not agree to do.

A lot of the best regular TV shows can't even win Emmys, sadly.

Nothing match with Hall quickly running in to attack Sting. Hogan and Savage also get into it. The entire NWO shows up to go after both Savage and Sting before Sting hooks Savage to a harness and they both take off to the top of the arena. Horrible!

Tony Schiavone interviews Jericho, who is still wearing Juventud's mask. Jericho challenges Malenko to a match tonight and also promises to rename the Texas Cloverleaf the Canadian Jericholeaf. The people hate him and it's great!

Bam Bam with a solid promo. We also hear from Sabu/RVD/Fonz, Joey Styles, New Jack, Francine and Shane Douglas.

Lots of extra security at ringside anticipating the arrival of Steve Austin. It only takes a few seconds for him to show up and start stunning everyone in sight. Shawn ends up showing up out of nowhere and levels Austin with a superkick. Shawn is about to level Austin with a chair when they go off the air.

Austin insists that Vince come out over referring to Mike Tyson as the "baddest man on the planet" the previous week on RAW. Instead, he gets Gerald Brisco and Jack Lanza. They try to reason with him, but no dice. Slaughter is next and Austin has no use for him either. We cut to Vince in the back, who is refusing to confront Austin. I see Vince Russo is copying Randy Savage's return to Nitro in 1997. Patterson and security are next and still, nothing. Finally, Vince is out with his full entourage in tow. Check out that jacket! Vince calmly explains that "baddest man on the planet" is a figure of speech and Austin responds by flipping him off, which Vince sells great. Austin tries to get Vince to admit that he doesn't want him to be WWF champ and Vince is not willing to do anything of the sort. Austin is willing to give Vince one free shot and even rips his blazer in an attempt to provoke him. Vince won't take the bait, so Austin throws him out of the ring. Great segment, but Austin really was overreacting and was a total asshole.

Shawn sends in a taped promo from some restaurant and is saying all the right things he should be saying going into Wrestlemania. This build has been tremendous. HHH is there too.

This was a good glimpse of WCW's top talent, but the match was oddly laid out, with the hot tag just being one of those moments where time stands still because everyone was just standing there. There were times when so many things were happening that the crowd didn't know where to focus, and each moment subtracted from the other happening at the same time. Brutus Beefcake is someone we have never seen before, huh, Tony Schiavone?

I think in their own way, they did honor the stip. The lumberjack match is now a match that will involve lots of crazy brawling with everyone around the ring more than it is a way to keep the wrestlers confined. Plus, since the lumberjack match failed to keep them in the ring, I suspect the next step (or at least the eventual step) will be to put them in a cage.

It does seem like desperate hot shotting. But I do like this promo, with Hogan throwing some real below-the-belt comments Savage's way.

[1998-03-07-ECW-Revere, MA] 2 Cold Scorpio vs Shane Douglas
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I liked this match way better than expected. I loved the suplex counter Douglas did from the apron, where he did a release gourdbuster into the ring. I also thought this had a nice, old school feel to it, with Scorpio as a standard babyface and Douglas as the heel champ whose valet runs interference and who directs traffic nicely in the ring. Really strong pair of handheld matches! -
The FBI were just awesome in this. Even Tommy Rich at ringside only had one spot to pull off, but he did it well. Smothers was in for most of this match and was the guy that held this together. He brought the schtick but also brought the action. They went for the traditional tag formula at times but that really wasn't where this match shined, mainly because Candido and Smothers were doing the dissension gimmick and were hardly strong babyfaces anyway. Really good and I'm glad I saw this.

This was very good and typically brutal. Usuda is most dominant on the ground while Ishikawa seems to have the advantage when they are vertical. Unlucky for him, most of this is on the mat so Usuda is pretty dominant throughout. I think I would have liked this more if Ishikawa lost just because Usuda took so much of the match, but I still think this was very good bordering on great.

I notice a lot of people are giving him credit for making shows entertaining. Is that the announcer's job? I always saw the announcer as the salesman, but not really a circus attraction in his own right. The entertainment should be happening in the ring, not behind the booth. The announcer is there to faciliate the entertainment of what we are watching, but I don't really agree with the idea of an announcer entertaining people. Announcing is a means to an end, but not really an end. That philosophy leads to an announcer, whose job is to get everything else over, not themselves, getting over themselves and what good does that do?
