Irrational pet peeves displayed by carny wrestlers
Bix replied to supersonic's topic in Pro Wrestling
Wrestlers who specifically think "heel" is an inside term is way up there for me. -
A look at DDT's rise to being the biggest indie promotion in japan (and maybe even the world) through the lens of the Suzuki-Takagi empty Tokyo Dome match: http://deadspin.com/japan-s-most-ridiculous-wrestling-promotion-hits-somewh-1795957240

Anything from #53 through #104 (as well as the Brawl for All show) will be eligible. PLEASE give as many details as you can to help find it: Episode, segment, time stamp if possible (approximate or exact), what was discussed, etc. The first Best of came out great and we want this to be even better.

Not sure why I hadn't started this yet since I've been their wrestling columnist for a couple months, but with my Frank Deford article going up today, now is as good a time as any: How Frank Deford Helped Pro Wrestling Journalism Become Very Real. For everything I've done there, my Kinja author page is the place to go (Kinja is the content management system used across all of Gizmodo Media Group). Because I'm a freelancer and not staff, I have a separate commenter account (because there needs to be an account that can post articles the site but I can't use that one). My favorites so far (in addition to the Deford article) are probably: My discovery via FOIA that the the FBI bugged Vince McMahon Sr. and Jim Crockett Sr., catching Vince admitting to threatening Jerry Graham with blackballing. My Vince Russo origins piece, discussing how 25 years after he first became a well-known figure in wrestling by bashing reporters who cover wrestling, Vince Russo...launched a new podcast bashing reporters who cover wrestling. The Keith Lee profile that I interviewed him for (also with quotes from Donovan Dijak and Beyond promoter Drew Cordeiro), with a good bit of focus on him being the WM weekend 2017 MVP. The Shinsuke Nakamura profile, which I talked to Simon Inoki for.

Not sure how I forgot that part. Brilliant match even if Punk probably shouldn't have been wrestling that night.

There was no announcement to current members of the price change until they went to renew, so I wouldn't make any assumptions with this group. What do you mean? There's no renewal. It's auto billed like every other streaming service.
-
Since there's been no announcement, I'm going with the idea that existing subscribers are grandfathered in at $20 until stated otherwise.

Whaaaaaa? So now it's MORE than the Evolve PPVs were?

Between the Sheets #95 (May 10-16, 1992) (Featuring Steven Prazak)
Bix replied to KrisZ's topic in Publications and Podcasts
News to me. -
I haven't seen anyone obsessed with it in the first place but I've been around internet wrestling bullshit way too long to see any other implication from that kind of troll post.

This is the worst thread in the decade-long history of this board and it's all stro's fault. Yes, people criticize the WWE presentation all the time. Criticizing a specific aspect of it doesn't make people women's wrestling fetishists or whatever his theoretical point is.

Yes, as well as the Rock 'n' Roll Rockers.

[2006-06-17-ROH-In Your Face] Bryan Danielson vs KENTA vs Samoa Joe
Bix replied to ShittyLittleBoots's topic in June 2006
I was there live, and the match clearly fell apart with all of the busted eardrums and concussions (as well as Bryan's knee injury). I honestly haven't watched it since, but I haven't seen any reason to. The highlight was the crowd collectively realizing that KENTA was legitimately knocked out after he laid motionless for about two minutes. Which was awkward and shitty but also kind of h hilarious.- 1 reply

Andre-Bret was ripped from Landy's YouTube channel. WWE didn't bother reaching out to see if they could get a better copy from him on DVD. Also, dunno if there could potentially be any on video, but they did Strike Force be Islanders iron man) marathon matches first in 1987.

Traps benefit more from steroids than other muscles because they have a lot more receptor sites. If someone has completely ridiculous traps, it's a telltale sign.

Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets The monthly slate of Patreon-exclusive shows for Between The Sheets patrons gets a new addition with Between The Bulletins. Each month, we'll pull a pre-"dirt sheet" era wrestling newsletter bulletin and navigate through the results, posters, ads, newspaper clippings, notes, and whatever else is in there. For the debut show, Kris and David are joined by Beau James to discuss the March 1982 edition of Tom Burke's Global Wrestling News Service. We discuss just about every territory, a bunch of outlaw groups, the international scene, and more. Lots of great information on Mid-South Wrestling expanding into Oklahoma, Beau's beloved Southeast Championship Wrestling, Ric Flair and Blackjack Mulligan's Knoxville promotion and Leroy McGuirk's Tri-State territory both nearing the end, a strange roster of foreigners in NJPW, and much more! Sign up here. Patrons can click here for the show. We also have a free preview of the episode where Beau educates Kris and David about a Kentucky outlaw promotion that was advertised in a clipping featured in the newsletter. Specifically, he explains they mixed the occasional genuine name wrestler in with numerous masked imposters. Also, David reads the highlights from a letter that Antone "Ripper" Leone sent Sam Muchnick during his back and forth with the NWA while running opposition shows in the 1950s.

Mauro was already scheduled to work the next Showtime card this coming weekend. I don't see how any of this is a big deal if JBL was the trigger. It's not like Paulie Malignaggi is also bullying him.
-
Mauro is a dude able to be working for what, 4 different corporations at once, in an unprecedented position as being lead announcer for wrestling (in a company that doesn't allow people to do outside work), MMA, boxing, and sometimes kickboxing all at once, in addition to anchoring a MMA TV show and doing a podcast. To call him "mentally ill" is to both downplay what he's been doing for 20 years and overplay his mental health issues. FWIW, lately, Mauro had mostly just been doing WWE and boxing as of late. Inside MMA was cancelled, until he got the Rizin gig I don't think he had done any MMA PBP since his last Invicta card over 2 years ago, and even if he's still under Glory contract (I forget if he is or isn't), he effectively stopped being their announcer a while ago because the cards usually ran the same weekend as another employer (usually Showtime) who was running a show and had higher priority position on his dates.

Worth pointing out that in the entire show, I don't recall Russo having any kind of linear argument for "all hardcore wrestling fans are gay" other than: 1. When he said Finn Balor needs to go to a gym, someone sent him a photo of Balor looking pumped with his shirt off. 2. Jason Powell was concerned that adding Maryse to the Miz match at WrestleMania would hurt the quality of the in ring work. At which point Russo said that's not a normal male thought, whereas he watches women's matches s specifically hoping for a nipple slip. (He later added far he watches TMZ solely for hot chicks like the Kardashians. The implication was that all of his TV viewing is dictated by the presence of hot chicks.) The rest was literally just calling people gay Homosexuals because he disliked them.
-
I talked to Justin about that a little but didn't use it for now because the Morrison interview took the article in the obvious direction it ended up in. One thing I thought was particularly interesting was that the HHH hazing was more of the "I didn't realize that bothered you" variety. While JBL is outwardly malevolent, HHH put on the "I figured you'd find it funny" kind of veneer.
-
So I covered some of this on Deadspin including John Morrison blowing up the JBL tweet with a quickness: http://deadspin.com/ex-wweer-on-announcer-jbls-bullying-this-stuff-is-enc-1794126676 I actually had the draft written before he tweeted it so it was amusing when I saw it.

JFC. Let's give a recent example: Should I have not reported that TNA was getting employees to put travel costs on personal credit cards because nobody at TNA would give an on the record comment? Should I have not reported that Hogan and Gawker had agreed to a settlement because nobody was giving an on the record comment for a few more hours? That's literally not how this works. Specific to Mauro: Even before we get to Dave, it was already pretty clear what happened based on what Bas Rutten was tweeting. Bas is Mauro's podcast co-host as well as one of his best friends, who he literally credits with SAVING HIS LIFE by getting him the Pride FC job when he was in a bad place mentally. Frank Shamrock, who is Mauro's best friend and manager, is also Dave Meltzer's best friend. Mauro and Dave have been friends for years. This is one case where it would be absolutely mind boggling to question Dave's reporting.
