I loved the match from 71. I thought Jack was much better in the match. Inoki for the most part was fine in the match, and at times really good. Jack though was on another level and really brought it. His working of Inoki's leg was so interesting . Plus the struggling of the matwork really impressed me. Along with Brisco's selling. I liked it better than the 76 Jumbo match.
-
What matches does Jumbo have in the 70s where he looks like a top 10 worker in the world? In the Brisco matches you reviewed he was inferior to Inoki and Baba. I thought Inoki was pretty mediocre against Brisco. The 08/28/76 Brisco vs Jumbo is fantastic. Granted... Brisco is fantastic in it, but Jumbo is excellent. John if you thought Inoki/Jack from 71 was mediocre. The one from 79 will cause you to poke your eyes out.

That's the thing OJ a lot of the footage from classics is him working other elite workers. He was the #1 or #2 guy for years in AJ. The 70's footage isn't as prevelant as the 80's. So finding a cache of Jumbo In the 70's working mediocre talent might be hard to come by. I want a larger sampling of Brisco. I don't think I'm going to find it. Maybe someone can make a match list of Jumbo in the 70's that made tape?
-
As a fan at the time that's how I envisioned it.
-
Also Jumbo/ Flair from 78 was damn good . I haven't watched it recently. Jumbo had a lot of strong matches from the 70's. Don't forget the Robinson series . They were real good too.

Jack Brisco vs. Buddy Colt We get a couple of highlights from 2 matches for the Florida t.v title. We don't get much just some finishes. I'm not ready to condemn to Eddie Graham as a finish man based on some highlights. Jack Brisco vs. Paul Jones (09/01/82) Parv goes into detail on the backstory of the Brisco injury a few posts up. In short Jones messed up Brisco's leg in the parking lot and should be on the shelf for a month. This is a studio match and it's a great one. We get 12 minutes or so and both guys looked good. Brisco goes after Jones leg like a surgeon. He is all over it. I'm a mark for working a body part so this is heaven for me. Got to give Jones credit he sells the leg perfectly. Jones tries to counter out of it with a headlock, but Jack turns the tide and is back on the leg. Jones eventually counters with a guillotine leg smash. Jack destroys the leg some more. The leg work serves 2 purposes. One is payback, 2 it takes Jones Indian Deathlock out of play. The ref warns Jones about karate use. This might be a residual thing from his Steamboat feud. Jones gets some offense in and Brisco takes an awkward bump to the outside. Both guys have leg injuries now. Brisco is in control and looks to be finishing off Jones. Brisco irish whip Jones into the corner, Jack follows up and gets hit with a Karate thrust for 3. Final Thoughts: This was tremendous. It's all smartly worked. Both guys sold well. I think Jones did this even better than Jack in this match. Jack had a real edge to him. They did a great job foreshadowing the karate finish. Jack really brought the action that drove the match. Jones was great at reacting too it. ****

That's a tough one. With Race everyone in the building knew Race just escaped by the skin of his teeth after an ass kicking. With Brisco he was so good at selling and making the opponent look good he would suck the audience in. Look at the 1st fall of the Jumbo match. Jack controlled early, but then Jumbo dominated the fall and part of the story was that Jumbo looks like he has Jack's number but got unlucky. i think Race was more effective because the crowd understood what happened. With Brisco we as hardcore fans pick up the nuances . I'm not sure crowds in the 70's picked up on them.

Plus 10 years for Parv to drive Will mad!!!!

I wanted to knock out all of his matches in his prime at once. I'm going to be looking at his post prime and tag work in the next week or 2. Then moving onto Billy Robinson or The Destroyer.I was afraid of waiting in case Dory put you to sleep .
-
Parv I'll assume you like Paul Jones the wrestler better than the manager?

This belongs back in the Rey thread. It belongs in both, Since it has more to do with Rey I moved it back.

Jack Brisco vs. Dory Funk Jr. (2/8/72) Dory is the champ here. This is from Florida and we get around 35 minutes of a 60 minute match. This was shown on Florida t.v. So with a t.v being 60 minutes, commercials, and wrap arounds we get 35 minutes. The presentation of this was tremendous. We get Brisco, Solie, and Coach Heath discussing the match as it happens. They offer a lot of insights like strategy, psychology of the headlock, Jack even explains why he did certain things. This is a no DQ match. That stip is in place so we don't get a cheap finish, and gives a reason why the match was taped. Their are no falls taken in this match Both guys were on their game. We start out with Dory going for the spinning toe hold. Jack gets the headlock. Dory in the process of trying to counter it starts grinding his knee into Jack's face. That was real nasty and a really nice touch. Dory goes for an Atomic Knee Crusher for seperation. Jack holds onto the headlock and in a real nice touch while still in control sells his leg. We get a repeat and Jack sells the leg even more. Now Dory wants out of the headlock so while still in the headlock he begins punching the damaged leg. To stop Dory from hitting his leg Jack really cranks the hell out the headlock. This was really smart work with a touch of nastiness mixed in. Dory finally gets on top and scrapes his boot across Jack's face. A back suplex by Dory. Dory is now working Jack's arm. Holy shit Dory is delivering European Uppercuts to Jack's shoulder that he's been working on. That is such a great idea. Jack throws some forearm smashes that results in Dory doing a hair pull to stop the momentum. We get a nasty forearm exchange. Brisco with an arm wringer with help of the ropes. We get some more big forearm exchanges. Dory gets Jack in the corner and works him over with his famous uppercuts. Dory goes for the Butterfly Suplex that Jack counters into a backslide for a great nearfall. Jack is back to the headlock. We see a knuckle lock exchange. Dory with a back trip and Dory puts his weight on Jack. He then does a knee drop to Jack's bad arm. Jack counters with a body scissors. Dory counters it with a Boston Crab. Jack's counter to that was a roll up. Dory eats a knee in the corner. Jack works a Chicken Wing. Jack ducks a forearm, Butterfly Suplex by Jack. He follows up with elbow drops to Dory's bad shoulder. A Dbl stomp by Jack . Jack gives Dory forearms into the stomach. Back breaker by Jack. Jack now is going after the back with smashes, hip toss, and stomps. Another back breaker. Dory counters the Figure 4. Dory with a big knee drop from the top. A Backbreaker by Dory. He follows it up with an elbow drop, Atomic Drop, and a submission hold to the back. Jack is fighting the submission hold. Jack with a German Suplex. Both guys are speant and we get a draw. Final thought: I really enjoyed this match. Going 60 you knew it would be more methodical and it was. The matwork was more deliberate and detailed like Dory rubbing his knee into Jack's temple than battling for control. I can see people say the structure wasn't consistent. I'm a structure guy, but it's not the be all end all to matches. I liked how each guy would change up strategy when it presented itself. I thought Jack's fire along with his selling was awesome in this match. Dory sold well here too. He also added little details in the match. The nearfalls were spread out and timed well to get the most out of them. I loved Jack, Solie, and Heath on commentary they added a lot here. ****

I agree. It has it's own thread now. Have fun.

Moved all the talk not doing with Rey out of the thread.

I also think you see how much the champ was willing to give based on the promotion they came from. For example Harley Race stooged himself out more than any other NWA champ in my opinion. Race's home territory was K.C. A territory where Race had to sacrifice himself a lot to get others over to work with him because it was hard to get main even talent. So for him to go territory to territory stooging his ass off was the norm for him.
-
You do see trends emerge depending on who the NWA president was at the time. Dave kinda touches on this also in his Geigle orbit.

I'm not sure about Jerry. The Briscos have 3 tags against Adonis/Murdoch on tape. One of them is a handheld. The matches with Steamboat/Youngblood are 3. Starcade and 2 studio bouts,Jack & Jerry Brisco vs Stan Hansen/Ole Anderson ,Jack & Jerry Brisco vs Road Warriors (Texas Tornado Match) , Jack & Jerry Brisco vs Johnny Weaver/Bob Orton, Jr.,Jack & Jerry Brisco vs Jimmy Valiant/Bob Orton, Jr,and some matches with the Funks I'm not sure how complete. Their are squashes, and some highlights of marquee matches.

I got through Jack's matches in Japan in his prime. It's in the microscope. http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/19164-jack-brisco/?p=5640050 The Brody match is post prime. I really wish we had more prime Brisco on tape. I have one Funk Jr match in his prime from Florida to look at. Between the complete matches and highlights he looks like an incredible worker. He doesn't have a long career, and doesn't have that long of a prime. Even the complete matches from Japan, and the Florida Dory; he has only 4 opponents in the 7 matches. So the pool is shallow when getting a feel of what he can do with a mediocre or bad wrestler. Jumbo,Dory, and Baba will all get a vote or get lots of votes. Bobo Brazil is the only poor wrestler he faced in complete matches. I'll be looking at his post prime and tag work in the next few weeks.I've seen most of it, but will revisit it for clarity. Every fiber in my body wants to vote him high in this poll. I'm just not sure their is enough variety out there. He will be on my list though. He truly is a stud.

Jack Brisco vs. Dory Funk Jr. 1/27/74 This is one of their famous draws that has made tape. The other is from Florida. I watched this one the other day, but was kinda drowsy. I rewatched it and realized how mediocre the match is. This is a match up that has been beaten upon wrestling fans as an all time great match up. I've seen this a few times. The 1st fall goes about 40 minutes. This was really boring. They seemed like they just didn't know where they wanted to go. So they would work holds. Sometimes the arm, sometimes the neck, sometimes the leg etc. I understand if you switch strategies because one isn't working. With Dory's lack of selling the holds you get no idea what's working and what isn't. Their's some neat stuff, but overall the 1st fall is lackluster. Jack on the other hand is great at selling the holds. Dory takes the 1st fall. Yet the 1st 40 minutes seems like a basketball team running out the clock until their's 5 seconds on the clock and they pick up the pace and make a move. Just like the finish of the 1st fall. The 2nd fall is much better. Both guys are much more aggressive. Jack with his punches and Dory with his European uppercuts. The work here is much more on point and has a sense of urgency. Jack takes it with the Figure 4. Dory finally looks like he's in pain. Thank you for giving me some emotion. The 3rd fall opens with Dory doing a good job selling the leg damage. Some more nice exchanges. It ends with Dory on the verge of winning as the bell rings. Final Thoughts: The 1st fall really missed the mark for me. Even with a much better 2nd and 3rd fall the match falls flat for me. Sam Muchnick is in the front row to start, but ends up giving up his seat to a little kid. The mat wrestling was not engaging for the most part. I thought Jack worked hard, but it didn't translate into a good match. Dory had his moments but dragged the match down for me. ** 1/2

Jack Brisco vs. Bruiser Brody (04/26/81) This was just a 4 minute brawl. Upside the crowd was into it. I can see getting into it live, but being pissed that you only got 4 minutes. Overall the match seems like a real town killer. I kinda wish Jack would have just stretched the shit out of him. The no selling of the Figure 4 on the outside when Brody got back in was a real WTF moment. He's running the ropes for crying out loud. I did like Brody's big scoop and then the slam of Brisco. It was a nice power move. I'll give it 3/4* for the crowd, and the strength spot by Brody.

I prefer to talk about wrestling on this board. Though I'm curious. We get a couple of posts with examples of posters having different takes on different related wrestling subjects .You claim it's not the best defense to this hive mind idea. They did a good job of illustrating that the board is made up of people with different ideas on wrestling. You claim that the people of the PWO board aren't hive minded. What is your point?

I've always been a Von Erich's/Freebirds fan. The start of the feud is a famous angle. The payoff to the Kerry V.E/Michael Hayes LLT was booked perfectly. You could get 6 mans, tags, singles, gimmick matches on the aforementioned matches. The enviroment was great. We had several incarnations of the feud. The 1st go did big business and for WCCW was umbrella storytelling at its best.

Jack Brisco vs. Bobo Brazil (03/13/75) This will be a test for Jack. Bobo has a rep for drawing money but being a terrible wrestler. Brazil has this white stuff coming out of his mouth like white worms. I'm guessing he's trying to get over that he's a rabid savage. I'm guessing Boogieman might have been able to get over in the 70's. He's seconded by Rufus Jones. The 1st fall is started by a pearl harbor by Brazil. He's all over Jack with headbutts and spewing out the white stuff. Bobo catches the 1st fall. The 2nd fall we see Brazil continue his assault on Jack. This time he works in some punches. These punches sucked. Jack makes a comeback and goes after the leg. The leg work is done well. I'm a real mark for the hamstring stretches. Brisco takes the fall with the Figure 4. The 3rd fall we see Brisco really take it to Bobo by targeting the leg. Brisco is a master at working a leg. Brazil attacks Jack with headbutts, gouges, and punches. Brazil's punches looked much better here. The violence is picking up. Rufus starts helping Bobo. Eventually they brawl to the outside for the match to be thrown out. Final thoughts: This match didn't resonate with me like it did for Parv. Jack had a pretty limited opponent and did his best with him. Not to shit all over Bobo, he did has his moments. His offense was really lmited, but they did a good job working around it. Jack was smart to try to cut down the tree that was Bobo Brazil. Still the match was lacking. **1/4

Jack Brisco vs. Giant Baba (12/05/74) 1st off Parv by rare I think the collector meant as in a title defense was rare. I loved this match. The first fall was so great. The mat wrestling was good here. Brisco working a headlock and Baba was fighting it every step of the way. The struggle here was off the charts. Brisco had the headlock while Baba was fighting for the leg. The work here with the headlock was so damn engaging. They mixed this up with some great struggle on a couple of overhead wristlock spots. The stakes are high here so Jack resorts to cheating quicker than in the 1st match. Eventually Baba is working a real compelling wristlock on the ground. This in turn morphs into a cross arm bar. This was all good stuff. We see Jack get some more work on the leg. The leg work was had a real edge to it. In a great call back to the 1st match Baba attempts his running swinging clothesline, but Jack sniffs it out and delivers a dropkick to counter. He follows it up with a back suplex to capture the 1st fall. The 2nd fall is real hot. We see Baba go after Jack's back. This was great. On top of that Baba really uses his weight to great advantage. This really adds a lot this fall. Seeing Baba work a Boston Crab was tremendous. He looked like he got serious torque. Brisco's desperation back slide was a neat near fall. Baba with the swinging neck breaker to capture the 2nd fall. The 3rd fall we see it breaking down into a fight. The strikes were ok, but not really their strengths. I thought Baba's looked better. Baba after the back with high impact moves. Brisco goes for the same stretch as the finish of the 1st fall. This time Baba is ready and counters the Back Suplex to capture the 3rd fall. Final thoughts: This match was so amazing. It's even better than the 1st. It's a few minutes shorter and they seemed to cut some of the fat out of it. The mat wrestling was better in the 2nd match. The match had a more aggressive edge to it. They built off aspects of the previous match. They built off aspects of previous falls. The story telling here was top notch. Both guys put on great performances. Brisco's fire and selling were really on display here. I can't put over enough the struggle in this match. A true classic, and a phenomenal match. **** 3/4.

Where the Big Boys Play #68 - Clash of the Champions 17
shoe replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Parv I really liked the talking point about the Clash feeling really episodic. It had a real UWF t.v show feel to it. Except the Clash didn't end on a cliff hanger. I thought Chad's viewing of the 91 yearbook really added depth to his review of the tag match.- 18 replies
