  1. I don't overly get stressed out about it. I'm sure that I could have watched some of it this weekend, but I preferred to spend it: Sat 4:00 AM - 1:30 AM Everton vs ManU + Chelsea vs Arsenal + 3 episodes of Castle with the girlfriend + College Football-O-Rama (flipping around to too many games to list) + ManCity vs Wolves (off the dvr from earlier) Sunday 8:00 AM - 10:30 PM Spurs vs QPR + Goals On Sunday + Barcelona vs Mallorca (off the dvr from Sat) + NFL I'm sure that I could find some time in there for Wrestling, but I'd like to sleep more than the 3 hours I got on each of Thursday and Friday nights. And get some exercise in (such as heading out the door now). So I don't get too stressed about all the crap laying around he to watch. It will get watched at some point, especially when I scale back some on the futbol and college football goes away after the new year. John
  2. I think Corny is a little confused over what was documented. I don't recall any reports at the time that Vince thought they were going to stay because he knew just how huge the offer from WCW was. Hell, I think Wade had stuff going back a while before notice was given that Hall & Nash were going. It would have been very hard for Vince to give Nash a shitty payoff: he was in the second most pushed match on the card opposite Taker. If you don't give Nash the standard PPV bonus (and at the time he was roughly the same level of star in the WWF as Taker), you're opening yourself up to a lawsuit, especially from a lockeroom lawyer like Nash. I don't at all believe Cornette on Hall getting a standard Mania bonus. I think Corny is wrong on all three, and it's not like he had a lot of love for Nash or probably Hall by that point. John
  3. Coke. Shitloads of coke. John
  4. We have a whole thread on what a selfish asshole Hulk was to Orndorff, Andre and Savage which made their turning on him totally warranted. No doubt Savage should have seen it coming after Mr. Wonderful and The Giant got screwed over. But Savage never could have guessed that the previously asexual Hogan would be lusting after Mrs. Macho. For all the skunky things Hogan did up to that point, trying to steal someone else's wife was a line he'd never crossed before. John
  5. On the subject of that match, did anyone else think it was TOTAL BULLSHIT when they announced that if Money Inc. lose by countout, they also lose their belts? Why? At least mention that stip BEFORE the match. This on the same night Hogan got an impromptu title shot. Well, there was the Money Inc Finish: they simply would walk out of matches and keep the belt. Perhaps one of the biggest regular bullshit finishes in wrestling history. So I'm perfectly fine with it *ever* getting announced that if they walked out, they would lose the title. John
  6. What Tim and Jerome say: Sting was the dumbest motherfucker ever among babyfaces. Just booked to be an idiot. The Nikita one was a good addition to the number of times that Luger turned on him. John
  7. He actually got to job to Hansen in January in a #1 contenders match. It wasn't quite nothing: it was akin to Kobashi jobbing to Doc in 1993 in a #1 contenders match. As far as others: * Kobashi (Budokan) then Taue (Sapporo) got wins over Spivey in 1993 * Taue (Carny) then Kobashi (Sapporo) got wins over Gordy in 1993 * Kobashi (Carny) then Taue (Carny) got wins over Hansen in 1994 Neither got the win over Williams, likely due to timing in the period when one of them would have gotten it: * Doc's push in 1994 towards the TC * Doc's dope bust in 1995 They both got beat like a drum by Misawa, though one of them got a TC challenge against him: Taue. Among the natives behind Misawa in the period where Taue was "de-pushed": 1991 leading into Carny 1995 9-2-2 Kawada 4-4-5 Taue 0-4-6 Kobashi 1993 leading into Carny 1995 4-2-0 Kawada 2-4-1 Taue 0-5-4 Kobashi You're not ahead of someone you've never beaten in a singles match, who inturn has traded wins with the #2 native in the promotion who has cleaned your clock over the years. The fans liked Kobashi more. They knew Taue was ahead of him and where hoping to see Kobashi finally drop him in a singles. It's Korakuen Hall. There were some interesting reactions in the building in that series. Watch the 60 minute six man again and listen to the fans at times pull for the rudo Kawada & Taue while at times treating the techinco Misawa & Kobashi as almost the heels. They were pulling in some of the hardest of the hardcores on those two shows, and they were having some fun with it. It's not representative of "All Japan Fans" in general. Clearly Misawa passed Taue by... well... he was always ahead of Taue. Did it sound at Budokan that there were more Taue fans than Misawa fans? Beyond the normal "we're rooting for a great match crowd" that we see when Misawa is against every opponent, by the point all of whom were well behind him as the top star in the promotion. Taue gets a better reaction in Budokan in April 1995 and beyond than say February 1993 not because an underdog (he's was in 1993 even more), but because he's putting on a much better performance and giving the fans more to pop for. But still the majority of fans in the building are pulling for the overwhelming favorite, the guy who was a favorite against everyone in the promotion, and a guy who obviously was much more of a favorite against Taue than Kobashi: Misawa. Pro underdog default? This is why the fans rooted for Misawa opposite Kawada in the majority of their matches, despite Kawada always being behind Misawa? You are literally the first person I've ever spoken with who thought/thinks Taue beating Kobashi in 1995 would be an upset. Opening night of Carny with Doc busted. Big opportunity and Taue did nail it. John
  8. Dylan, may I make a suggestion: Rather than limiting this to that sub header of "results review", you probably should open this up to all things about Ken. It would be worthwhile after the results for folks to put together a list of his available matches, and probably talk about them. Just as the results reflect well on him, so do a chunk of the matches that are available. John
  9. My biggest problem with Apter is that we really don't know how impactful *inside* the magazine he was. Apter was the public face of the mag, but he really wasn't the reason any of us bought those fuckers. Did anyone here buy any of those mags specifically to read an Apter piece? Of course Weston should go in first. Beyond him, we truly don't know how impactful someone like Stu Saks or the other editors/writers were in putting it together week after week. Who actually worked the phones and wrote that stuff. Sure, Bill took photos. But having seen a pro wrestling magazine reviewed and edited on the photo level, as much as a photog needs to be there shooting a crapload of shots and not suck at it, the editors really are the ones sifting through the shots to find the ones that not only fit in with the narrative of the article, but also the rest of the mag. You can't have every match represented by a freaking Power Bomb. I'm not saying that Bill wasn't involved in the office... but I don't think we've ever had a fully accurate piece on the inside goings on at the Apter Towers. I know that Bill is respected by his "peers" there, and they do put him over as the face of the mag. But... I worked on a couple of pieces on what was probably their biggest selling item of one given year, and I never talked to him at all. It was someone further up the ladder, both in e-mail and on the phone. My recollection of the conversation with who referred him to me was: "I gave X from PWI your name as someone who might be able to help him something they're working on." Not: "I gave Bill Apter your name as someone who might be able to help him something they're working on." I'd be willing to vote for Bill, but someone needs to make a better case than: "He was the face of the Apter mags and like famous and shit." Mark Madden was the face of the Torch along with Wade for a while... then became bigger on a national level... and he fucking sucked. John
  10. 01/30/90 is from the IWGP Jr #1 Contender's League (the juniors tourney for the year). It's a league match, but essentially the "final" as the last match of the league, the two at the top of the board in terms of points, and the winner would get the shot at Sano. Original TV was JIP, but the whole thing should have aired on NJ Classics when they got to 1990. Owen was back in July, but didn't have a TV match with Liger. He did have one with Mutoh. There may be a handheld, but the Liger handheld I remember from the year getting pimped was Liger-Hase. They had a match in 1991 in the League that got a lot of snowflakes. Perhaps that one is being mixed up as being in 1990 as well. John
  11. This really is just Kobashi getting a pair of title shots, his first ever, in a short period of time: 09/94 Williams vs Kobashi 10/94 Williams vs Kawada 01/95 Kawada vs Williams It's not terribly different from Taue getting his first shots in a short period: 07/92 Hansen vs Taue 08/92 Hansen vs Misawa 10/92 Misawa vs Kawada 02/93 Misawa vs Taue Did that mean Taue was ranked ahead of Kawada, Williams and Gordy at that point? No. I think this is more of a case of Baba not really trusting Taue to hold up his end of a big singles match between 3/93 and 3/95. It's entirely likely that Taue wouldn't even have gotten the 4/95 Budokan match if Doc didn't get busted. Luckily, Taue picked up his game and changed his own future there. Kobashi's partner had the longer title reign(s). Hell, Kobashi was hotter back in 1990 and 1991 and 1992 as well. Fans liked him. They were mixed on Taue. I thought Kobashi was cutting off Doc in the 1994 Carny to degrees that he really shouldn't have been given Doc's push. Since Doc was headed to the TC by the time of Carny 1994, and Taue *wasn't* by the time of Carny 1995, I find the cutting off of Doc to be more jarring. Most of the Kobashi from the era that I watch now has a hell of a lot more cutting off that I recalled at the time. Folks pretty much let him have his head after a point. Perhaps not Hansen, but most of the rest rolled over in a lot of ways to The Kobashi Show. Not say that Kobashi didn't eventually bump and eat offense to other folks. But it's not like Taue had *zero* offense prior to the end run. John
  12. I suspect they did send him home for the suspension. No one wants to fly into a city where there's a show on their own dime just to hang out with the boys, and it's unlikely he was following the boys around from city to city. Scott has a pretty fair track record over the years of getting caught doing stupid stuff away from the boys on his days off. He also knew he would be back for a last round of jobs before he and Nash were gone, and probably even when: after Mania. Nice little thing on Vince's part to screw him out of his Mania PPV bonus, and pull the Dust-Razor match and turn it into Piper-Dust. John
  13. Austin debuted at a 12/18/95 tv taping: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TU2jwdTlzjg That's poor quality, so two nights later, though it aired in January: This was taped 01/23/96 after the Rumble: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rnXoI_flCY So he had the buzz cut hair at that point. This is Austin in one of his last Ringmaster appearances, taped 02/19/96: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x843a9_ma...master-su_sport Shaved head at that point. Hall was suspended from after the 02/20/96 Superstars taping (i.e. those same set of taping cards) and returned after Mania for the Euro tour on 04/07/96. Last night for Hall and Nash was the famous MSG card on 05/19/96. So possibly sometime between 01/23 - 02/20 or 04/07 - 05/19. Real narrow window. John
  14. I notice on WO-4: "Follow @bryanalvarez and @wonf4w on Twitter" And saw a plug pop up on my fb feed. John
  15. I don't know how huge of a Netflix fan I'd be. Stuff that I really like, I'll end up watching various episodes nearly every year at some point because I enjoy it (Nero Wolfe, Castle, some movies). Stuff that's a big effort to rewatch because you really need to watch all of it (Deadwood, The Wire), I'll attack maybe every 5 years or so. But... I WANT ThOSE DISCS! I buy a hell of a lot less TV/movie dvds now than I use to, especially movies. Much more selective there. But I've flipped over to picking off series, especially when they're on sale. I tend to see cheep value in 20+ hours of a show at $19 to $29 compared to a two hour movie at the same price. Also with shows, if you catch up and then find the show falls off (The Mentalist was never "good", but got really annoying last year and into this one), you're caught up and don't need to buy anymore of the season sets for years you don't like. I know Netflix can accomplish much of the same, often cheaper. I tend now to try to pay attention more to starts of seasons and DVR & watch the opening episodes more quickly. If the show blows, the series setting gets deleted and I move on. Example would be Prime Suspect this year. I loved the UK original series. I like Bello and some of the rest of the cast. I'm giving it a try. It's a decent enough procedural... but nothing really great at the moment. But I'm a procedural fan, and watched more mediocre Law & Order episodes in the 90s and 00s than I care to remember. So I'll stick it through the season and see if it remains passable. The show that took CSI's spot on Thursday, though, end up out of the the DVR rotation after the debut. John
  16. I probably have 500 discs around here to be watched... and I think Dan just sent me something with 20+ discs that's sitting in my mailbox (too tired to wander out there to check after getting home). I have so many non-wrestling discs that my head hurts as well. I have no idea when I'm going to get around to watching Season 1 of the Glades, but a co-worker's significant other writes for the show and I have another friend who likes it, so I thought I'd grab it to check it out. Of course I lust after MLP, so I'll probably watch all those season sets of Weeds that are sitting on the shelf... I think half of which are still in their shrink wrap. And the re-watch of Deadwood is sitting in the DVD player at the moment. So I don't have any great advice on watching, other than pick something you enjoy, pop it in, and stick with it. I caught up on the first two seasons of The Mentalist by just plugging away on it, and it's really nothing more than a lightweight, mediocre series that interested me in... well.. nothing more than catching up with Season 3 that was going on last season. Something like Justified was more worthwhile in getting the Season 1 set so that I could watch Season 2 when it aired... except Season 2 was spottier than 1. See how complicated this shit gets? Pick something you like. Enjoy it. If some folks whose taste in wrestling tends to line up with yours pimp something, give it a go and stick with it a bit because it may be a slow build before it really clicks. John

    1977-1984

I think there's probably more than 30 disks for the 70s. What I was trying to get across is that when Dan says that he's missing just 41 matches from NJPW in 1978-79, it means he has a lot of stuff. There were about 250 matches on TV for NJPW in 1978-79. Dan has about 200 of them. This is Fujinami's prime with the Jr title. For Kido fans, there are 20 matches. There are things like the Hollywood Blonds coming into NJPW. A younger Masked Superstar does two series, including big singles against Inoki and Sak, along with an interesting tag: 09/21/79 Antonio Inoki & Tatsumi Fujinami 2-1 Masa Saito & Masked Superstar You've got Hansen coming to New Japan, an earlier Hansen-Andre, and all sorts of funky, interesting looking tags like this: Antonio Inoki & Riki Choshu d. Stan Hansen & Victor Rivera Stan Hansen & Jack Brisco d. Antonio Inoki & Seiji Sakaguchi I really think rather than going with a "fixed" 30 disks for the entire decade, simply look at a year at a time going forward from 1970. "Bundle" the shorter 1970 through 1974 if need be, but treat each year as it's own yearbook as different years may have more while others less. Starting with 1975 and AJPW's singles tourney, the sets get bigger... and really things like that tourney and the coming Tag Leagues are among the best examples of matches for a lot of 70s wrestlers that are out there. I think the 70s are a little different from the 80s and beyond simply because there aren't 100 Pat Patterson matches out there in the 70s like there are 100 Beniot matches from the 90s to pair down, and 100 Jumbo matches. I believe there are four Patterson vs Backlund matches that are available: 2 at MSG and 2 at the Spectrum. I can see pairing that down to two matches: the MSG matches. But there's also a Pat vs Inoki in Japan that's a keeper worth seeing. And I'm sure KHawk and Kevin can point to some AWA keepers. And as much as it's a so-so match, a yearbook really should have the Patterson-DiBiase for folks to see how Ted worked in the WWF (and that myth that he could have been a better WWF Champ than Bob). There also is a Pat vs Bruno in the Spectrum that at least one collector years ago had, though I don't know if it ever found it's way into wider circulation. Pat's a HOF "worker" and Bruno is a HOFer. That's an interesting 1979 match, which if it's in circulation is totally unique: Bruno and Pat never faced each other in MSG while Bruno was champ. Just would hate to see the 70s set get too narrow... there's so much interesting stuff out there, and it's never been looked at in a real organized way. The 60s might be a set of it's own. It's not close to 30 disks of course. The 50s (and what little is before with ) are interesting and warrant a really interesting set. But there's more stuff from there starting to bubble up.
  18. This probably warrants it's own thread since I'd guess a lot of us have sets. John

    1977-1984

My recollection is that Will indicated they would do yearbooks on the 80s when the DVDVR 80s Projects are done. 70s would be very interesting, but most of the material is from four sources: * NJPW * AJPW * IWE * WWWF/WWE I suspect there's more NJPW than AJPW, and Dan just blew my mind recently with how close he is to having all of the NJPW from 1978 & 1979: 1979 - "missing maybe 14 matches" 1978 - "missing missing 27 matches" He's just 6 matches short on 1980... and everyone knows Dan when he's on the hunt to finish one of these things off. Anyway, there's quite a bit of NJPW and AJPW. IWE has come out with a number of sets, along with earlier matches in circulation. There are a number of 70s WWWF/WWF house shows out there, but more in 1977-79 than earlier. Assorted matches here and there as well. In addition to those, there's some misc matches out there, some AJW late in the decade, some other promotions. The early part of the decade would be smaller sets. Later part of the decade more. I doubt any year would ever get to 30 discs in the sense of Will & Loss having to worry about cutting it down to fit within that. John
  20. Interesting pic since there was little overlap of Austin and Hall/Nash given: * their jump to WCW * Hall's dope suspension in early 1996 John
  21. Was looking at Paul's comment on the MX's last year, and thought I'd toss up what's generally available of their stuff that year and see if anyone had some recommendations of what should be keepers. So I grabbed the old CMPuck list and was going to pull from it. Instead... I think I'll just toss up the list here and see if people want to make quick runs through it to recommend Will & Loss focus in on any specific matches as being worth a look / consideration / keepers. There's tons of stuff here as Punk included promos similar to how Will and Loss are. But there's stuff that folks might not have in the front of their brains but when seeing it might remember it being good and worth a look. For example: 2. Arn Anderson vs Buzz Sawyer Power Hour 1/19/1990 12:19 I'm sure I watched it, but don't have any memory. Someone might recall it as being worth a look. It certainly is an interesting match up, and if Buzz was interested, might have been good. Times aren't always a lock for bell-to-bell match time, but do give an indication whether it was a total squash or something more. No doubt a chunk of the January TV was actually taped in 1989. If stuff is a keeper, we can always take a look. An example would be the first one: that's the actual Match Date, not the TV date. Since it's a title change, Punk was able to use the real date. With other tapings... well... we all know how that goes. Anyway, here goes. Lots of interesting stuff on here, and no doubt there were other good matches that didn't make the cut for him. ========================= NWA # 104: Dec. 23, 1989 - Jan 19, 1990 [1-10 are 1989 matches] 11. 22. Totally agree on this. Yeah... that would be a good idea. From your other post, it sounds like the Kanyon book is good. He'd been working on it before his death? Does the co-author indicate how far along they were, and what is anything he had to fill in from others? John
  23. And the site still sucks? It's not like he's spending all his time admining The Board, right? 18 months... wouldn't part of that have been to redesign the thing? Yikes... John
  24. Or been around a long time following the search business. I don't have the stats, but do see how things pop up... and how traffic for our company's products are driven via search. So I certainly have been able to guess. Not the numbers, but what generally drives. Since Dave and Bryan's business is subscription based, they largely haven't thought deeply in terms of traffic and getting articles out. But lordy... if Dave was even smart about his Yahoo stuff, he'd learn to drive traffic there when he published articles... and inturn drive traffic from Yahoo to his own sight. BTW... has someone like Snowden ever thought of approching the PFT/CFT/PBT empire over at NBC about having MMAT? Florio has turned a freaking small blog into a large blog into a gig on TV. Guys are on Versus (soon to be NBS Sports) regularly as well. Yahoo's MMA coverage, to be frank, it pretty shitty relative to even the content that Dr. Saturday rolls out on a given week on Yahoo... and on top of that Yahoo throughs up tons of other non-blogger pieces. I'm not sure if Dave and/or Iole have grasped the traffic of PFT/CFT style blogging with multiple pieces a day _and_ a willingness to link all over the web to other articles. Dr Sat seems to grasp it. Say whatever you want to about Florio, but he and his team get it. I'm thinking Snowden might be the type of person who could do it as well. He writes both longer pieces several times a week that can get across that he's a thinking of some weight, but he also is the type who could churn out 4-5 other short "news" items a day as well. I don't know what NBC pays its CFT guys, and NBC also just got out of the MMA business with UFC leaving... so they may not love MMA. But Florio... you've got to think he's making some serious coin now. People not a bad idea to get into that... and if the Yahoo folks aren't smart enough to get into it, someone like Snowden probably should. Fox is in bed with UFC, and seems to be pushing their web content quite a bit more in the past could of years (Glazer especially). UFC is pretty bitchy about bad coverage, so Fox might not be a place for Jon given how much bitching head have to eat, and crap from his bosses. But who knows. John
  25. Third from the top on Sunday on the main stage: http://coachella.com/event/set-times Pretty much the same spot as Mumford & Sons on Saturday, who got a fair amount of run in the build up. But in terms of billing, it was Kayne, then The Strokes and then Duran Duran on Sunday. As it should be. Kanye was touring in support of another #1 album, The Strokes had recently released an album that got to #4, and Duran Duran were touring in support of a record that topped out at #11. Coachella also has been trying to move a bit away from headlining with / anchoring around / overly pushing older/reunion acts and instead trying to be a bit more "current". AF, KOL and Kayne all had chart topping / near chart topping albums in the second half of 2010. Not trying to knock DD too much here. They got a fair amount of respect being in the #3 hole on Sunday. Don't ask be WTF Animal Collective were doing in the #2 hole on Friday, unless it was simply a matter of them not wanting to put Mumford and AF back-to-back. Clearly Mumford were the #2 on that night, and like I said earlier got a pretty big push in the hype. John
