Comments that don't warrant a thread 2010-2011
flyonthewall2983 replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
WWE likes to avoid their own history when convienent though I must say they are a LOT better at remembering than they were in the past. I am guessing they don't want to hurt some of Lawler's face heat so I don't think Cole would be allowed to do something like that. In any other angle Lawler could be in, yeah I see your point. But this works for me on a level of duality, because Michael is basically doing the same things Lawler did, and Heenan before Jerry. One way it could have worked is if Cole used that opportunity to say how he admired those things in Jerry and was severely let down when he "softened up", but didn't let it come to the surface until recently. And yeah, their amnesia to certain things really bother me like they do anything else, but I'll also agree they are better at it now than before. That's why I like the Punk/Orton angle because it is Randy's heel antics coming home to roost. -

If I can swerve the discussion of this angle, it's a real shame that Lawler's WWE past hasn't come back to haunt him in this feud. For instance, Michael Cole could have put together a video package of all the major stuff Jerry did as a heel (ruining Bret's KOTR coronation and insulting his family and making a big scene over Jake Roberts' alcoholism come to mind). Would have given the angle as much depth as using the family has been. -

I'd figure his big finish would be the old "pull the strap down on the 2nd rope and come down with a punch" routine he's done for eons. -
Funny that Keith David narrated this, especially since he played a character in a movie named "Andre the Giant".
-
If this is all true, I'm just wondering (hoping) if this is just Cole burning his bridges because he's about to be canned.

Clash XX was my first real exposure to WCW. That show is likely being best remembered as Andre's last appearance on U.S. television. I remember it being a really strong card, but recently I saw the main event for the first time (our tape of it stopped right as the heels were coming out) and it didn't hold up as well. I totally agree with Jerry that the '93 Clashes out performed the PPV counterparts.

Did WWE at the time ever imply directly it was the first time Andre was slammed?
-
Well, he certainly had the most dubious beginning.

I thought Lawler/Cole was last.

78,000 seems low just by seeing everyone that was there that day. The Silverdome holds 80,000 for football. At the very worst, all the stands were nearly full and there was the large ringside attendance as well. Even if the WWF oversold the attendance that night, I'd estimate the actual figure would be well over 80,000 and probably in between the 85,000 to 90,000 range. The 93,173 claim doesn't seem all that bad in comparison to the 75,000 and 78,000 figures, IMO. One reason I believe it's 93,173 is because no PPV carriers in Michigan had the show. This was one of the facts on the WM III special edition DVD released awhile back.

Please tell me he used the Foreigner song as his theme music.

Ric Flair said in his shoot interview that it almost bankrupted him anyway, wouldn't go into why, but I wouldn't doubt it.

I have a feeling if this happened in WCW, even during the last few years, Jeff's ass would be fired very quickly and very publicly. -
[1993-02-13-WCW-Saturday Night] Vader vs Rick Thames
flyonthewall2983 replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
Kayfabe-wise, I think the idea is that Vader (and Harley as well) view matches like these as a public display of his skills, not serious title defenses. It works on two levels, the primary is showing how dangerous he is, and the 2nd being showing how cocky and arrogant he is as well. These guys aren't contenders, just slabs of meat to be pounded upon.- 13 replies

[1993-12-27-WCW-Starrcade '93] Ric Flair vs Vader
flyonthewall2983 replied to Loss's topic in December 1993
It's the most sympathetic I've ever seen Ric has ever been as a babyface. He never really had a David/Goliath program with a guy of Vader's strength and size, which makes this unique in Flair's career. Add to it that he's putting his career on the line, and setting it in his backyard, it's ready made to be a good angle. You probably all know this but it bears repeating that he later had it put in his book that Hogan called him the next morning, congratulating him on the match and told him he had a tear in his eye at the end. A big part of me takes that with some salt, but the little bit that's left thinks that would be nice if it were true.- 39 replies

I think it's a great match, but a terrible ending. I can only assume that was because Leon didn't want to submit to the figure four.- 39 replies
