It's funny you say that. When news about Liz's death came out, and the speculation began to his involvement or lack thereof in it, I thought about this period of his career, and specifically things like this interview or what I read in WWF Magazine. Luger's persona at the time was meant to reflect Vince's idea of patriotism, which gave the character a more personal touch. It's clearly the antithesis (in some ways) to Hogan's downright jingoism, and meant to be more a reflection of the American everyman, which is what these segments were designed to present him as. One can say it was a fore-runner to what John Cena's character is a reflection of. Rather than being this beastly caricature of the alpha male strong-man, he dresses in street clothes and speaks his mind. And as down as I am on the product as opposed to their 80's-90's heyday, this is one area in where they've improved. I'm sure what Loss says about how WCW ruined him speaks a lot for other guys too. I always looked at it as if WWE was prohibition and WCW was the swankiest speakeasy of the south. Not just steroids, but everything else.

Considering they even did something with Bret Hart of all people, I understand Savage would want to come back too and actually do something. Now that he's gone I wonder if the reason he was basically blacklisted will finally surge. I've never seen anyone else say this, but maybe it was Randy who black-listed them. It's entirely possible (and even understandable) that being put in the broadcast booth and being inexplicably scaled down was demoralizing enough for him to resent Vince and WWE, that when the time comes after WCW is sold and they are knocking on his door to come back like they did with Hogan, Randy didn't answer. If what people say is true about his money, then he wouldn't have had any of those motives to come back like some did and still do (Flair in TNA, for instance) to recapture what magic they did have one more time.

I'd love it if someone made a tribute video, with "Guiding Light" by Muse as the soundtrack.

Gotta give big props to Bix for his wonderful articles at CagesideSeats about Randy's career.

For whatever reason, I was really hoping WWE would make him guest referee for the Cena/Rock match in Miami next year. It would take the generational element already in the feud to another level.

On top of everything else that's been said, I give him major credit for walking away from it all and not sullying his legacy by working when it was clearly past his due date. Even in WCW, when WWF was easy to label him a has-been "Nacho Man", he could still turn it up to 11 inside the ring.

I've had this debate one time before with my brother; when was he more scary, when he first started or in '98-'99 when his gimmick took a Satanic slant? -
Compared to what I've seen so far (Beyond The Mat and Wrestling With Shadows), I think it is. It has some dubious qualities to it, mostly in the production of it but I thought it was quite a startling look at the sad story of the Von Erichs

Not weird to me at all, it's a trump card for the face to use, especially in this case. It's saying to the heel "put up or shut up". I really thought Del Rio was going to win, starting that feud, so Miz and Riley could start their program. -

That always makes me wonder if he did that when he worked with Andre. Speaking of which, are any Flair/Andre matches on tape or handheld?- 15 replies

The Sting & Luger/Steiners match is quite good, but I can't get over how it was voted PWI's MOTY over Bret/Perfect from that year's SummerSlam (which is my addition to this thread, for obvious reasons). It's awfully short, and the finish was just to set up Sting/Nikita.

I like how Rock kept his patriotic spiel concise and to the point, and how the show (other than the opening and the Cena clip later on) kept it at that. Now I gotta pull one of my favorite Family Guy exchanges Meg: "Chris, change the channel. I want to watch George Lopez." Chris: "That show just furthers the stereotype that George Lopez is funny." -

Not really wrestling news but President Obama, at the White House Correspondent's Dinner last night, came out to do his bit to "Real American". Surely combined with Seth Meyers' speech, the Donald didn't have a pleasant Saturday night from the look of it. -

Really random obscure ECW question I hope someone can answer for me here. Is it true one of their mid-carder performers used a song by Porcupine Tree called "Stranger By The Minute" as their entrance music? I read this somewhere a long time ago and can't remember the source, but it's been at me for awhile. The timeline of it would have to be towards the end of the company, considering the song came out in 1999. -

I remember that being shown on sports highlight segments at the time because of how smooth and effortless it looked. I watched the video and agree that it did look effortless on Ahmed's part, but I more or less meant it wasn't as big a deal in '95 primarily because of Lex leaving, and now I think about it more to do with Yoko being reduced to a mid-carder by this point. -

Reducing it to a 5-10 minute segment, rather than putting the show itself on television was the mistake. Doing it live would have been better, but I highly doubt if they had that kind of pull with USA at the time (bear in mind, they were still pre-empting for the dog show). Funny that two years later, after Luger made his famous defection, Ahmed Johnson slammed Yoko like it was nothing. -

I think the "torch passing" stuff has to do with Andre doing a straight job for someone, which hadn't (to my knowledge) happened before for obvious reasons. I also think it was a backstage move as much as anything else, because Andre had the respect of the boys that maybe Hogan didn't have. Silly or not as it sounds, that's my take on it. -
Muchnick linked this on his blog today with the headline "Once Again and For the Record: TNA is worse than WWE", and considering the source that's quite the slap to them. It's quite infuriating, but hopefully as it suggests, the cat is really going to be out of the bag on them once and for all if these lawsuits being filed actually have all the merit we think they do. It's all the more proof that the pressure should be put on that clusterfuck to reorganize itself and become the true alternative to Vince's "Entertainment company".

Heenan first started on PrimeTime because Jesse was shooting Predator, and the rest is history. I think for SummerSlam '89, Gorilla couldn't make it because of health problems. I know at an MSG show sometime before that, Vince filled in because Monsoon was recovering from a stroke. -

This makes me wonder if Vince ever tried to get Arnold to appear on WWE programming back when Predator and The Running Man came out.

I'd imagine if they were still married then, even suggesting Liz do some of the more risque stuff the women on the show were doing would probably bare not too well on whomever would have suggested it. I'm sure getting Randy to OK Liz taking off the dress to reveal the bikini at the first SummerSlam was akin to pulling teeth.
