    I have a feeling if this happened in WCW, even during the last few years, Jeff's ass would be fired very quickly and very publicly.

    Kayfabe-wise, I think the idea is that Vader (and Harley as well) view matches like these as a public display of his skills, not serious title defenses. It works on two levels, the primary is showing how dangerous he is, and the 2nd being showing how cocky and arrogant he is as well. These guys aren't contenders, just slabs of meat to be pounded upon.

    It's the most sympathetic I've ever seen Ric has ever been as a babyface. He never really had a David/Goliath program with a guy of Vader's strength and size, which makes this unique in Flair's career. Add to it that he's putting his career on the line, and setting it in his backyard, it's ready made to be a good angle. You probably all know this but it bears repeating that he later had it put in his book that Hogan called him the next morning, congratulating him on the match and told him he had a tear in his eye at the end. A big part of me takes that with some salt, but the little bit that's left thinks that would be nice if it were true.

    I think it's a great match, but a terrible ending. I can only assume that was because Leon didn't want to submit to the figure four.

    Looking at stuff from that year then, one could liken WWF to the Fall of the Roman Empire. The fallout from the steroid and sex scandals meant that everything was changing, and a revolving door of talent was already in the process of happening. Flair left, Hogan left, Savage was being reduced, Heenan and Okerlund were gone and replaced by less entertaining characters. The one good thing that happened was Raw because it was a breath of fresh air from the canned stuff they were doing at the time. My general memory of WCW in '93 was that that was the year they really started to mount a credible offense to WWF finally. Wasn't without it's own blunders though (not having Flair wrestle right away, Paul Roma the Horseman, the Shockmaster gaffe, the bloated promo film for Beach Blast, "Lost In Cleveland", etc, etc.). Vader was at his height in the company, and his domination in the ring made the World Heavyweight Championship mean something. It's in stark contast to Yokozuna, who just sat on people for a finish. His Starrcade match with Flair (no doubt in my mind it'll be part of this comp) was as perfect a program as WCW could make it.

    The last match I clearly remember seeing him in was the match with Luger in Vegas a few months prior to this, though I have vague memories of him in that year's World War III match. If it weren't for Bischoff's general attitude about how worthless Arn was, a program with Hogan would have been worthwhile and good television because of the reasons stated.

    Agreed 100%. She also had a more palpable personality than any woman before her in WWE history, and seemingly not afraid to play a more realistic heel. Sherri over-played the Wicked Witch persona, and thus became a caricature.

    No homophobic digs last night in Cena's rap, and probably more important to that, Miz became the rightful heat magnet instead of either Rock or Cena.

    At WrestleMania VIII, the first match of my first pay-per-view I'd ever watched, Shawn Michaels vs. Tito Santana, there was this woman who heckled with a very harsh and shrill voice I will never forget. She must have been kicked out or something after that because that was the only time during the whole show I remember hearing that.

    Me too, but Jesse always could shine no matter who he was broadcasting with. I liked him better in WCW because he was way more neutral than he was as a heel announcer in WWE. Him and Heenan were the only two guys who could pull being that kind of announcer off. As much as I like Jerry on Raw now, I really didn't like his approach to the role back when he replaced Bobby.

    Jake talked about it on the Pick Your Poison DVD, said he was trying to shake it off of Randy. I read something that said the snake died soon after.

    It was quite a thing to watch him back. It's palpable that he really missed the jolt he got from being The Rock. And he definitely made the most of it tonight. If that translates in Atlanta, my hope is that it brings the entire card up a notch.

    I would definitely say that it was because of the lovefest for Shawn Vince turned WWF into at this time. And it is sad, because Shawn did hold up his end of the bargain by having some of the best matches of his career that year. Back then, I thought he would have been champion for a bit longer so it was a legit surprise to me to see Sid win the belt.
