Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
s1rweeze replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
Because it wasn't made part of the regular PGA Tour until the mid 90s or so. But even casuals were still well aware of it -- Jack vs. Watson at Turnberry alone towers over any PGA Championship moment past or present. Paul Lawrie (no name at the time but still a solid player) won in a playoff with Van de Velde and Justin Leonard. My girlfriend at the time fumed at me for a week for insisting on watching that spectacle instead of paying attention to her. -

Interesting exchange here: https://twitter.com/WWE/status/365924115175047170 I'd be for moving MITB to November as a Big Four replacement. Wasn't WWE flirting with getting rid of the Survivor Series name anyway? -
Godspeed. You've done great so far. Here's hoping you pull through.

If I remember correctly, many people at the time agreed with this sentiment and as a result were expecting a huge bloodbath of a brawl (since it was in Philly) to make the match worth a crap. Instead we got... yeah...

Except that Teddy Hart guy, lets not talk about him

The internet absolutely enhanced everything going on that year. Anyone else remember the WWF Informer message board on AOL? It was more or less abandoned by its original creators and taken over by people smart to the business. It was my first exposure to that side of things and it blew my mind

In his WCW days in the later 90s, the way he'd unblinkingly stare into the camera during his entrance never failed to make me bust out laughing
-
He really should have been. He was mega-over during the Shane feud (crowd reaction to winning at Summerslam '99 was 2nd to Austin's entrance) and really should have been the guy to replace Austin at Survivor Series instead of Big Show. He was a big missed opportunity.

Ah, so THIS is what Gorilla was rambling about during WM7. What he meant was, it was the largest available pay-per-view audience to the date that could have potentially purchased that particular event. Yeesh, talk about seedy.

Holy cow, this is great stuff, tons of info Kudos to mookeighana

Only one f-bomb from Johnny Sorrow? This show must be falling flat...

Great job as always El-P, I just have to comment on one silver lining for this era of WCW: Liz, Miss Hancock, Torrie Wilson and Daffney might be the most attractive lineup of valets at any point company history. So there's that, at least.

[1991-11-28-WWF-Survivor Series] Interview: Ric Flair
s1rweeze replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
Very interesting take that has me re-thinking that entire time period. Great comment! -
I agree, after a while they would've had him doing the weekly Raw opening 25+ minute promo opposite HHH to start Raw and it would have bombed.
-
Sting would keep his name (Goldberg, DDP, Booker T, Steiner and even Lance Storm all did) but I'm sure JR would've saddled him with some godawful nickname. His entire presentation would have been overhauled as well. Like Goldberg, Sting would've also been asked to do too much on the mic where I don't think he would have fared well at all. Interesting that two of the biggest WCW babyfaces, Sting and Goldberg, did hardly any mic-work in their late 90s runs yet were hugely over.

Wrestlers Who Were More "Over" Than Their Push

To follow up, I know these are instances exclusive to one period of time, but I'll just add that because of these instances, the crowd always cared about these guys much more than their push warranted -
Wrestlers Who Were More "Over" Than Their Push

Another obvious one is autumn 2001 RVD, although WWE did sort of begrudgingly squeeze him into the triple threat title match at Survivor Series. Does babyface Rikishi fall into this category? He got some main event rub in 2000 but never headlined a PPV or anything until his ill-fated heel turn. But man, he got some massive reactions from January through that summer. Another was Christian in 2005 when crowds were just begging for him to take on Cena, but again WWE did the "Fine, we'll throw you into a three-way for the title" and that was that. I'll go off the map a bit and say the Rockers in 1990-91. Everywhere they went they got massive reactions and amazing matches, but were stuck in neutral. -
[1991-11-23-WWF-Superstars] Randy Savage and Jake Roberts
s1rweeze replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
This cracked me up. Keeping Elizabeth from ringside at Wrestlemania is evidently a lot more important than making sure Randy Savage doesn't die. The best part of this, and its been burned into my mind, was Savage finally getting up, stumbling around still taking swings at Jake. What an incredible performer. I know it goes without saying, but dear lord how much of a lunatic was Randy Savage to let a freaking cobra gnaw on his arm?- 24 replies

I think you're right. I remember watching this on scramble-vision the night it aired. This was my first PPV impression of WCW, since I wanted to know what made them different from WWF. This match uh... answered that question, more or less.

You deserve one. This is my favorite thread here so I very much appreciate the write-ups you do for each week, despite how painful and/or boring they may be.

Courtesy of wwe.com... I can't be the only person disappointed with this news, since it gives them an excuse to keep jacking up prices, right? If any WM was going to bomb, I'd have imagined it be this one since it had such a blah buildup.

[1991-09-28-WWF-Superstars] Ric Flair and Roddy Piper

Agreed, Vince rarely got involved physically so this was pretty stunning at the time- 10 replies

[1991-08-17-WWF-Superstars] Ultimate Warrior and Jake Roberts
s1rweeze replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
The snake that meets Warrior in the middle of the room is a cobra and bites Warrior in the face. Undertaker's appearance (complete with music) makes him very effective even though Warrior's ridiculous acting made "General Hospital" look like Shakespeare. Honestly watching this now makes me even more upset that Jake wasn't the higher power in that Russo-riffic storyline of 1999 WWF. -
[1991-04-27-WWF-Saturday Night's Main Event] Bret Hart vs Ted DiBiase
s1rweeze replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Getting back to this match, I thought Bret giving DiBiase everything he could handle was 100 times more effective to get across the idea of, "Whoa, Bret is not just a mere tag team guy anymore," than going over a guy of Barbarian's stature. That's the kind of match I was hoping for at the house show, but DiBiase was locked up with Virgil.- 25 replies

[1991-04-27-WWF-Saturday Night's Main Event] Bret Hart vs Ted DiBiase
s1rweeze replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
I like Barbarian too, but back then as a 9 year old I couldn't help but see it as a big disappointment. Although looking back, what other midcard heels were there for Bret to even have a house show run let alone feud with, even after he got the IC title? The only guy I can think of other than Hennig that would fit the bill is Rick Martel, but he disappeared after Wrestlemania thanks to the George Zahorian thing.- 25 replies
