[1991-04-13-USWA-Memphis-TV] Bill Dundee and J.C. Ice
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
JC Ice climbs to the top rope but Bill Dundee shakes the ropes. Not a nice thing to do dad. JC gets the pin and Dundee doesn’t even try to break it up. Bill pulls down Ice’s tights and spanks him. That was hilarious. JC Ice wants to apologize to his dad for what has happened. That spanking must have worked. Of course it’s a set up with Texas Hangmen attacked Bill. JC Ice has lots of friends to help him against Bill. Fun segment. -
[1991-04-13-WWF-Superstars] Irwin R. Schyster vignette
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
IRS doesn’t like late filers. I'm one of those. He wants itemized receipts for business expenses. IRS doesn’t care for tax loop holes either. -
Warrior is guest on Funeral Parlor. Paul has a special Ultimate Warrior casket. Bearer thinks Warrior is scared of Undertaker. Warrior has no fear and grabs Paul by the jacket collar and they yell back and forth at each other. Undertaker pops out of another casket and attacks Warrior from behind. Warrior ends up getting stuffed in a casket. Was laughing as various WWF officials were showing up with different tools to try open the casket. They get the casket open and have to perform CPR on Warrior. Can be hard to watch that stuff with the recent history of wrestlers. Piper questions if Warrior may have got brain damage. Agreed that Savage was great on commentary.

[1991-04-12-USWA Texas] Jeff Jarrett vs Tom Pritchard
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Yanamoto now handcuffed to Dundee. I thought it was a really strong match with Pritchard doing all types of work on Jarrett’s back. Elbows, knees. He was relentless. The finish wasn’t the best with another referee bump and curious decision by referee on something he didn’t even see. But belt gets held up and we will get more matches so that is fine.- 12 replies

Jarrett and Yanamoto handcuffed to each other. I can only imagine with Dundee was yelling at Yanamoto. Decent match though they botch the referee bump and have to try it again. Too obvious. Jarrett throws a chain in to Dundee and he gets the win.

Seems to be some type of top ten count down. Octagon is number one. Okay. Satanico doesn’t like this ranking and beats on Octagon to start match. First fall is a complete ass kicking with Satanico dominating and going after the mask right away. He’s too aggressive though and gets himself disqualified. Crap call ref! Satanico ties Octagon’s mask to the ropes. Great spot. My score card had it 3 falls to 0 for Satanico.

[1991-04-06-WCW-Saturday Night] Lex Luger and Nikita Koloff
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Luger interrupts Koloff’s interview and they brawl in the ring. About a dozen jobbers come out to try separate them. Koloff then smashes the US title into the ring post a few times to dent it. A bit weird with him being after the title and then destroying it.- 7 replies

[1991-04-06-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Ric Flair
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Controversy regarding Flair’s belt with his match in New Japan. More of a small plug to check out the PPV. Flair hits on Missy and gives her a kiss on the cheek.- 7 replies

Flair puts over Windham as one of the best technicians. Contrast in clothing styles with Flair in suit and Windham in leather jacket and wearing glasses. Flair throws Morton outside on the wrong side of the ring as was done same area where Windham was illegally hitting Rich. Nick Patrick had to completely ignore it. Rich gets taken out leaving Morton by himself. El Gigante wants to tag instead! I couldn’t tell if Gigante was no selling Windham’s punches or forgetting to sell them.

[1991-04-06-WCW-Pro] Barry Windham vs Brian Pillman
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Don’t see this as great as you guys and I watched it twice. Still a good match and they did a good job working over Pillman’s arm from previous injury. I did like Pillman interrupting Windham’s post match interview twice and showing good fire. -
[1991-04-06-USWA-Memphis TV] USWA fans / Jerry Lawler vs Eric Embry
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Quick video package putting over watching USWA live. Comments from fans at live shows. Free parking! Lawler is so accurate with those punches. He was hitting some impressive running ones. Fireball for Embry. -
[1991-04-06-USWA-Memphis TV] Doctor announcement / Interview: Jerry Lawler
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Lawler with his personal doctor talking about his injuries. Doc has come down on Lawler to take time off. So they are continuing this on. They are talking it up that it is serious but he won’t have to retire. He’s only taking four weeks off! -
[1991-04-06-WWF-Superstars] Ted DiBiase vs Reno Riggins
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
DiBiase introduces his new manager Sherri. Piper doesn't want to listen to any of this so takes off from the booth. Split screen interview of Virgil threatening to spank Sherri. Quick squash as expected. -
[1991-04-06-WWF-Superstars] Jake Roberts and Earthquake
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Savage is talking about Roberts having an attitude problem and the Damien should be outlawed in WWF. Savage taking pot shots at Jake. Maybe he is still somewhat heel. Roberts stays ringside with Earthquake heads to ring. Quake is scared of snakes and ends up running off backstage. -
[1991-04-06-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: The Undertaker
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Lots of hand movements from Paul Bearer. Undertaker is guest on Funeral Parlor. He’s been working on a special casket for Ultimate Warrior. Both guys sound slightly different from when they finally get their characters down. -
[1991-04-06-WWF-Superstars] Irwin R. Schyster vignette
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
IRS wants people to forget about getting a refund and think about generic drugs instead. He ditched the jacket and has his more familiar wrestling look now. -
[1991-04-06-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Jumbo Tsuruta vs Toshiaki Kawada
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Jumbo has a single leg crab on but Kawada still is able to kick him in the face. The ringside table as already bent so somebody must have done the dropping opponent knee first on it spot. Kawada’s kicks play a big part in him getting the advantage in middle of match. However, Jumbo gets all pissed off getting kicked in the face too much. Below their January 92 match but still a good one. Crowd was into it.- 15 replies

[1991-04-05-USWA Texas] Jerry Lawler vs Eric Embry (Cage)
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Before match Lawler brings up having to take time off due to neck injury. So they are playing that up in USWA-TX too but Lawler seems to be keeping regular schedule. Embry and Lawler take turns getting on the mic to run down each other. Embry also spends much time going after the fans letting them know he doesn’t care about them anymore. The mic stuff doesn’t fit a steel catch match. I kept waiting for things to get more violent. I wasn’t sure why there was even a cage involved as barely used until end of match.- 11 replies

Shooters: The Toughest Men in Professional Wrestling
Kevin Ridge replied to evilclown's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Got to read this on my travels to WrestleMania. I was a bit weary due to the author's previous books being on MMA but thought was really good book. Favorite part was the first sections on the history of the earlier shooters. I've seen names from title histories but many of those guys I don't know much about so it was cool to get more info about them. Early Japan was good and I liked the chapter on Brawl for All. Some of the UFC/Pride stuff was interesting but the Sakurabu chapter did feel like it went on for a while. Lesnar chapter too. That does speak to my lack of interest in MMA though. -
[1991-04-05-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Kenta Kobashi
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
I echo the thoughts of how much improved this was over 1990 yearbook match were they struggled. With the lights down it had the house show look but they were doing some big moves and delivering action. Kobashi gets a moonsault and Misawa looks to hit a Tiger Driver 91 too.- 11 replies

[1991-04-02-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Hulk has a bandage on side of his face from fireball. McMahon’s outfits have been ridiculous. Hogan is ready to play by Slaughter rules now. Hogan dialed back the Gulf War stuff so we ended up getting a great promo. -
Understandable. I was in lower bowel so much different for temps. Audio is something thing that stood out to me. I know these big shows don't translate well on tv. I couldn't hear anything from ring outside the heavyweights bumping and chair shots.
-
Hopefully I'll add more thoughts when I get home. Haven't gone through this whole thread as on phone. Anyways I thought show lacked special feeling that I would expect a mania to have. I enjoyed night of champions in Boston more than this. What happened to backstage interviews? Now we get recycled videos. Major gripe from me was during tag title match they put on these very bright lights on stage over ring for rest of show. These were almost blinding and very distracting. I had trouble looking at ring. Spent about half of remaining show looking at video screens instead. And I was not in nose bleed section either.
-
I thought weather was great. Rained briefly during pre show match. Didn't hear anyone complaining about temps. There should be no complaints accepted on dead crowd due to weather.

Two quick points: 1. I finally got to see wrestlemania live in person. 2. Zzzzzzz.......
