[1993-08-30-WWF-Summerslam] Music Video: Lex Luger
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Video would have worked with him winning the Title. Instead it just follows up the match by showing in detail the big push he got but that he failed to win the belt. -
[1993-08-30-WWF-Summerslam] Lex Luger vs Yokozuna
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
They probably should have thrown somebody else at Yokozuna at Summerslam. Trying to think of who that would be. What was the original planned opponent for Yokozuna in the first place? Hart/Hogan was booked as probably the main event of the show until Hogan backed out. Maybe should have been Undertaker since he would have saved face anyways with some type of count out/disqualification. Luger got pushed so quickly and heavily after July 4th that having him face Yoko right away at Summerslam there was little choice but to put the WWF title on him. You keep Luger away from Yoko as long as possible and build him up more slowly that it pays off much better later on. I think it was going to be a struggle with Bret though as the fans were more endeared to him. Luger takes out both Fuji and Cornette and then KO's Yokozuna who gets knocked out cold to the outside. Awful finish with Luger being well aware this was his only contractual chance at title match against Yoko but he settles for a count out victory. They rush a celebration with guys coming out trying to ignore that Luger didn't actually win the title. -
I called Bodies/Steiners match of the night for Summerslam as I viewed Hart/Doink/Lawler as one big angle. This whole thing is excellent. Lawler is fantastic throughout this whole thing from the second he pops through the curtain on crutches to the end as he is being raced to the back on a stretcher with his arm raised in victory. I get such a kick out of Bruce Hart getting a bucket of water in the face from Doink. Stu/Helen did not make show due to health issues but I wonder how they would have played into this. Doink did his part well in the initial match with Hart. As much as I've enjoyed WWF from this year, I am disappointed that Doink was not pushed more and that Borne's run is coming to an end. Lawler is wonderful as heel. Easily the best one going in WWF. Lawler looks to escape all this before Tunney shows up and the match with Bret must happen! The booking is so awesome of this whole segment. Hart gets the submission win but Lawler gets to remain King of the WWF when the decision is reversed. The perfect result for this match.

[1993-08-30-WWF-Summerslam] Shawn Michaels vs Mr Perfect
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
They hyped up this match that it would be a great WWF IC title match like Perfect/Hart from Summerslam 91. I dislike this more and more as I watch it on repeated viewings. It might have made a passable TV match if they were building to something down the road. It just ends out of nowhere with the count out victory for Michaels. The focus then shifts to Diesel versus Perfect. Time to move on from something that just was not working. Disappointing feud.- 12 replies

[1993-08-30-WWF-Summerslam] Rick & Scott Steiner vs Heavenly Bodies
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
I think the recycled music theme fits the Bodies perfectly. Todd Pettengill interviews Steiners mom and sister before match and make a comment about not being able to tell them apart. Steiners sister pulled a Cosmo Kramer and fell asleep in the tanning bed. Cornette wearing a neck brace selling his injury in SMW. Best match of the Summerslam card. May have been the strongest the Bodies were in their WWF run. Really good action and Bodies were able to get over with crowd for a mostly unknown team. -
The editing on the Raw set didn't bother me too much from what I've seen so far. Having purchased many WWE dvds before I've got use to them not always using the original music. Though it sucks for certain guys like Demolition, Bossman, etc. when it gets dubbed over. I hope the keep in Hotline plugs though. Simple to just dub out that phone number and not show the graphic on screen. Ventura on commentary for WCW is a must. Mysterio is interesting as they ignore the late WCW run of his career when he was without mask on all DVD releases. They have to show him without the mask though if you are going to be including all the WCW ppvs. They won't be blurring out his face. I think they were more protective of him previously with the mask when he was pushed more.

[1993-08-29-USWA-Mid-South Coliseum] Bret Hart vs Jerry Lawler (Cage)
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
We got that close to full Perfect/Lawler match so it disappointing this was edited as was. Bret was great in his role as the heel in Memphis. Ducking out of the ring to avoid Lawler. Doing the begging off spot which is funny in itself. Lawler had a great comeback with the punches. Owen and Jarrett get involved outside the ring as Giant Gonzales gets inside the cage! Him and Bret team up which is another good one with the high five. Lawler gets the pin off some miscommunication by the heels. We get the super Sharpshooter with Bret getting additional leverage with Gonzales pulling back on Hart to add more to hold. -
[1993-08-28-WCW-Saturday Night] Flair for the Gold: Rick Rude
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Was like they brought this segment out one last time just for this angle. Check out Rude's outfit complete with fanny pack. Flair in his intro of Rude says he has all the genetics. Rude is very distracted by Fifi and would rather talk about her than wrestling. Flair takes a Rude Awakening on the floor.- 9 replies

Cornette lying in bed with a bandage forehead and neck brace on. He is surrounded with stuff animals. Jim will be in the Bodies corner at Summerslam. Cornette bringing in two opponents to face Armstrong. First match will be for the right be commissioner. The second one will mean the loser must leave SMW. A lot for Cornette to try get over here but good. I think Terry is wearing a shower cap. The funny part of Terry's rambling promo is the lightning effects and the disclaimer at the bottom of the screen "I'll see you pukes in Knocksville". Armstrong does excellent job off confirming the stipulation of the two future matches.

I really enjoy Lawler trying to explain his heel persona on WWF TV. Probably my favorite part of this whole feud is to see guys as a face on their own promotion TV and heel on the opposite. Lawler will beat Hart in cage match or refund all the fans money.

[1993-08-28-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler and Vince McMahon
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
I love that Patterson is McMahon's bodyguard. Vince trips Lawler outside the ring. McMahon slowly taking off his jacket and then nails Lawler with a punch! Neighbors gets nailed with five piledrivers. So in one of the most hilarious things I've seen as Neighbors gets stretchered out, Jerry drops a fireball on his face for good measure!! What fun with McMahon in Memphis. -
[1993-08-28-AAA] Konnan vs Cien Caras vs Jake Roberts
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Jake spends most of the match hanging outside the ring while Konnan and Caras fought. Good mind games by Roberts. Not much of a match with brawling with loads of people happening after. Rough press slam by Roberts on Espectrito on the floor. DDP was puffing on his cigar while brawling. -
Love Machine originally had me thinking about the Steiners on how they do big moves and then do not try to pin their opponents. But this is more like 2 Cold Scorpio who hits a big move goes for the pin but then keeps pulling his opponent up before the three count. Santo was flying around here. But in the end it is more dumb garbage from Love Machine who gets disqualified in the deciding fall again when using a Tombstone in full view of the referee. Might want to remove that move from your arsenal.

Was thinking about it and not that I care to watch it myself but I am sure that Over the Edge 99 will not get included on Network even though they mentioned every WWE/WCW/ECW PPV would be available from the start. The show did not get a home video release and individual matches from it have not made themselves on to WWE compilation DVDs. That one will probably remain retired.

Long show! Kelly was the only one who made it out before the curfew. Was great to hear the whole band together even if only for one show. Oddjob had no lines in Goldfinger movie. Just grunted. Johnny you were close on his real name. It is not Harry Sack but Harold Sakata. I was very eager for the Tor Kamata bio and what a riot that he beat Baba in Japan. You guys covered it pretty well but that opening tag was such a great match. I don't check match listings so was crazy to see Steamboat in WWF in 80. His selling was great but I was watching this similar to James in that I could not help but keep my eyes off Brower and Kamata. I want to see Kamata versus Denucci! There's a dream match for me. Was a great disc over with some excellent matches. Really four matches worth checking out. Thanks to James for providing the translation of Pedro's promo. Was such much better than what Morales was trying to put out in English at first. Backlund versus Olymicano was bizarre. Pete got a new mic set up. I felt like you guys were setting around a table chatting it up while Pete was off on his own table alone just harassing you guys. That Patera/Denucci finish was off the charts. I had to rewind that one a few times to watch it again. It was an awesome move by Patera but equally hilarious with him upside down with his feet on the ropes and the referee missing the whole thing during the count. Another excellent, fun show to listen to that got me through my Friday at work.

I do a lot of copy and paste in the yearbook threads so my posts are a mess currently. Was noticing this yesterday when reading the comments. I need to use less contractions!

Ah, I wish Loss would participate. Looking forward to HHH show but I do hope you guys take the trying to be fair approach as much as one can with him.

[1993-08-24-Michinoku Pro] Great Sasuke vs Super Delphin

That background was one of the more distracting you will see. Found match to be a bit boring and lifeless with no audible crowd.- 5 replies

[1993-08-24-ECW-TV] Interview: Eddie Gilbert & Paul E. Dangerously
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Well they got Gilbert away from those vignettes and talking about other wrestlers. He is promising violence. -
[1993-08-24-ECW-TV] Shane Douglas and the Dangerous Alliance
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
That sign guy fan would lose loads of weight over the next few years. This Dangerous Alliance is an interesting collection with Muraco and Snuka involved. Quick squash win by Douglas. How will Douglas and Gilbert coexist? -

Really good show. I didn't even buy Michaels as future World Champion in early 94. It really took him going the distance in that Rumble for me to consider him a threat. Someone mentioned in this thread about Michaels as a promo early in career. That brief audio clip of Rockers in Memphis was something else. Jannetty came off way more charismatic than Michaels when talking. Michaels heel run in 97 is near the top for me. Probably number one since I usually like heels but Michaels both on TV and behind the scenes was so loathsome. The buildup to Summerslam match with HHH was funny to hear. I must have not been paying close enough attention at the time. I do agree that you guys have been both very fair to Bret and Michaels on each podcast devoted to them. Be interesting to see you guys tackle a Triple H show in the future.
