It depends though. The big thing with Reigns is hoping that he can connect to the casual audience in a big way, and the jury is out on that yet. If they don't believe he'll get over bigger to the smart fans than Bryan (an unrealistic approach at the moment), and that's the audience that is controlling the major shows, which in itself isn't a great thing, then they need to play this carefully. For somebody transcendent to come along and get over to everybody enough to sweep them all along for the ride, that takes something special, and I don't know if Reigns is that guy. I think they probably do see a potential backlash coming, but they're trying to reach the invisible man, the audience that isn't watching, and they have to try.

Want to thank everybody for the feedback - we read a good bit of it on the podcast, and the show is now online to listen to at the following link: http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/web/59xfi2/SCGRadio13-WasECWAllItWasCrackedUpToBe.mp3

Want to thank everybody for the feedback - we read a good bit of it on the podcast, and the show is now online to listen to at the following link: http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/web/59xfi2/SCGRadio13-WasECWAllItWasCrackedUpToBe.mp3 It ended up being a really fun show with some good debate on what was and wasn't good about ECW, its true influence, the crowd, Paul Heyman's illusionary skills, and a number of the feuds, angles and wrestlers. Check it out and let us know what you think!

And yet when Undertaker flies his opponents to Texas to PRACTICE WrestleMania matches, nobody says word one. Funny that.
-
So for this weeks podcast, we're going to look at ECW, and discuss the merits of the product throughout it's history, and talk about how much of the stuff was genuine quality, and how much of it was the Heyman illusion. I think it's a pretty interesting topic, given the loyalty amongst hardcores it seemed to have, given the microscope that was always given to the Big Two. As usual, I'll be reading feedback on the show and crediting you accordingly, but I want to get a bit of a gauge on opinions here - did you like the ECW product during the time? How do you feel it looks retrospectively? What periods were best, which ones were worse, how important do you believe it was, and moreover, does it deserve the reputation it had and has to this day?

The nWo - Did the positives outweigh the negatives?
JaymeFuture replied to JaymeFuture's topic in Pro Wrestling
I'm kind of surprised Sting let that fast count go down the way it did. At least he should have gotten his shoulder up to protect his own ass and make it an obvious fuck job. -
Agreed 100% - I find Meltzer hilarious during moments like that. People don't see the sarcasm in what he's saying, but it's brilliant. My other favourite exchange like this is the immortal: Bryan: "Let's say Vince lives to be 150 years old..." Dave: "Well he's not going to."

The nWo - Did the positives outweigh the negatives?
JaymeFuture replied to JaymeFuture's topic in Pro Wrestling
I want to thank everybody for the awesome feedback on this subject, we read a hell of a lot of it on the podcast, and had what I thought was a really fun discussion reliving the nWo, and talking about whether the positives outweighed the negatives of the biggest angle in WCW history. You can check out the show here: http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/web/yza72e/SCGRadio12-AnalysingthenWo.mp3 Hopefully you enjoy, feedback is appreciated! -
Here it is, taking all your feedback in the other thread and breaking down the New World Order, the biggest angle in WCW history, and whether or not the positives of the angle outweighed the negatives. This was a hell of a lot of fun to relive the angle, hopefully you enjoy it - feedback is appreciated as always! http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/web/yza72e/SCGRadio12-AnalysingthenWo.mp3

So, I'm doing a podcast this week on the history of the New World Order angle, and the question I'd like to pose to you all is - do you feel the positives of the nWo outweighed the negatives that ultimately came from it? I'll be reading the best feedback on the show as always, and any personal stories of your perspectives of the nWo while it was going on would be great as well. The deeper you get into your positives and negatives, the better. I'm interested to see what response this gets here...

WWF Dino Bravo was awful. I've heard good things about his time in Montreal, but I haven't seen it, so I won't write him off completely, that'd just be ignorant, but I never enjoyed his WWF stuff, and never understood why he was pushed to the point he was.

Vader was booked in pretty shocking fashion in the months leading up to Summerslam, and that was a bigger issue.
-
This is a little bit of a harsh comparison, but: The hot tag clean-up hitter, handpicked because of his "look" that earns him a push as a surefire singles star despite some noticable voids. Where have I seen this before....

A bit of a change of pace, but one I was very excited to do - taking people's feedback on this years G-1 Climax, as we discuss who was the star of the tournament, the best match of the tournament, and possible future directions for New Japan between now and WrestleKingdom on January 4th. This one was a lot of fun, check it out and let me know what you think. http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/web/acnh5x/SCGRadio11-TheG-1ClimaxandNJPW.mp3

Big Dave wrote on the F4W board a few months back saying that Nicholson was a big time Flair fan.
-
Just wanna throw this out there (and didn't want to start a new thread unnecessarily) - this week we're going to take a gamble on the podcast and talk exclusively about the G-1 Climax and New Japan, since there are a lot of people talking about it. So three questions to you all if you wish to answer: 1) Who do you think was the star of the G-1 Climax? 2) What was your favourite match of the G-1? 3) What do you think New Japan's direction will be between now and Wrestle Kingdom? Elaborate as much as you like, I'll be reading your thoughts on the show.

I'm glad a woman's feud is getting a lot of play, but Brie Bella is terrible, and I don't see why this is a bigger deal that Reigns/Orton or Ambrose/Rollins, given the implications on the future those two could potentially have. Ultimately it's all on Cena and Brock to draw. On a side note with regards to the how to push Del Rio, I remember in particular his smiling "I was born in Mexico, but I was made in America" promo sticking out like a sore thumb on how not to push him to the Mexican audience.

Not a fan of Nakamura losing, I really think this was his time. Excellent match in the finals however, just fantastic drama as Shinsuke kept getting closer and closer with the Boma Ye before getting absolutely shitcanned at the end. I haven't been a fan of the Bullet Club at all on this run, I think this angle is being way too overexposed. So on that note, the Jarrett/D'Amore angle doesn't bother me so much, and at least is they're trying to make the BC viable, then it gives Tanahashi something important to do. Poor Ishii needs to go home and heal the fuck up. That superplex was terrifying. And on a similar note, Honma's brainbuster on Naito was fucking brutal.
-
Agreed, and I think at one point later in the show, I say that Judgment Day deserves to be included in that same Rumble/Backlash/FL/SS class. Crowd was amazing on that show and the matches were totally on point. Summerslam 2000 is a brilliant show, one of my all time personal favourites, but it really is a crap shoot on which on those five shows I think is best.

Want to thank everybody again for the feedback in the main thread - join the panel as we we take your feedback and discuss The Good, The Bad & The Ugly of the year 2000 in wrestling. Talking WWF Pay-Per-Views, David Arquette, Bash At The Beach, Video Games, Vince Russo, WWF Tag Teams, Rikishi's Hit and Run, and a whole lot more. A fun trip down nostalgia avenue, check it out! http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/web/y93ptz/SCGRadio10-TheGoodBadandUglyof2000.mp3 Feedback is always appreciated, let us know what you think!

Especially since there was absolutely no reason why Mania and KOTR shouldn't have been awesome with the roster and momentum they had. 2000 is one of the more explored years, was curious how people here viewed it in hindsight more than anything (similar to how 1998 doesn't look so good outside of 98). ECW was a trainwreck during this year too, with one of the few exceptions being Tajiri having an awesome year.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
JaymeFuture replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
That was a little earlier at Uncensored. The promo with Flair in drag is one of the more unnerving things you'll ever see. I may be wrong, but I think the Flair/Savage program heated up the house shows after the Liz turn. -
Is TNA the worst wrestling promotion in history?
JaymeFuture replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
I do remember that, a real low point in TNA history seeing Luger helped down the aisle for the cheap digs.
