Welcome to the 18th episode of Wrestling with a Generation Gap! This time Dave, Nick and Rob take a look at one of the LEAST regard territories of all time, Al Tomko's Vancouver based All Star Wrestling. The gang eulogizes over Rob's favorite wrestling personality ever, Bobby Heenan (this was recorded months ago), Rob is somewhat on a downer over getting canned and the worst job interview ever (he since has a better job lol) but the boys power through this awful territory. They debate which war Al fought in, whether or not a territory based on aging legends works then or today, Dave loves Tomko, Dave argues Ricky Steamboat was a luchadore, PTB Networks GWWE contest, bios on some jabronis and Earthquake, we digress to a discussion of ALF hosting the Tonight Show and a whole lot more. Then it's new school as John Cena defends the WWE Championship against CM Punk at MITB 2011! On the docket is Al Tomko promo (with extended clips of Al vs. John Tolos) The Atomic Kid vs. Sonny Myers John Tenta & Rick Davis vs. Terry Rivera & the Great Scott Dean Ho vs. Rocky Dellasarra Gene & Kelly Kiniski vs. Igor Volkoff & Moose Morowski Kinisk promo Al Tomko promos and angles galore Battle Royal John Cena vs. CM Punk – MITB 2011 https://youtu.be/SGucEkOWEWI

My memory is uber hype mode for PPV really begins when the numbers start dropping after Summerslam 89. -

I seem to recall reading that it was around this time that SNME was sort of separated from the rest of the company, in terms of promotion. I recall it was very rare when Superstars and Challenge would hype one and likewise, they didn't seem to hype PPV"s all that often. I think I remember reading this was done on purpose, SNME had to be kept separate from the rest of the company in a sense, in order to make NBC play ball. -

World Cast: A WCCW Review
thebrainfollower replied to Ricky Jackson's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Johnny turning into the Jesse Ventura of this promotion 35 years later is great. Though I actually sort of agree. They pushed the Von Erichs so hard and in such a way that decades later, they do come across as heelish but eh, nobody cared then clearly. -
In the 16th episode of Wrestling with a Generation Gap we continue our look at one of the all time greats, Nick Bockwinkel. On the docket Bock's feud with Jerry Lawler and the $1000 a punch promos/match Bock vs. Rick Martel from Winnipeg Bock vs. Larry Zbyszko Bock vs. Stan Hansen as we do the Wrestlerock Rumble Then it's over to NXT for a UK championship match as Pete Dunne takes on Tyler Bate. Feedback and thoughts are always welcome!

Any suggestions as to Jerry Lawler's all time best promos? Maybe 6-8 of them.

Best of Continental - help sought from the experts
thebrainfollower replied to thebrainfollower's topic in Pro Wrestling
Thanks. I PM'D him. Anyone else care to chime in? -
The Hammer is number 18 or 19 on my list. I underappreciated him as a kid as I started watching regularly after Wrestlemania 2 which was pretty much the beginning of his decline. I still liked the guy.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 4
thebrainfollower replied to TravJ1979's topic in Pro Wrestling
Which is the one where a botched victory roll injures Arn's neck? I recall him finishing the match but it being very uncomfortable to see as he is in obviously terrible pain. -
An upcoming episode of my podcast is going to introduce Continental Championship Wrestling from the late 70's to its end (I guess the Fuller years). I don't know much about this territory so I'm going to have to do tons of reading, but in the meantime, if you had to pick, say 70-80 minutes of footage, what would you guys suggest? Doesn't have to be the best of the best, but I do want to go for a sampler of big angles, a good match, famous angles and promos, etc. Any help is very much appreciated!

This was a great way to end a pretty crummy week! I agree with Chad on 1993 WCW's TV being really good, but the overall direction of some of the main stars that year kind of bugged me. Sting pretty much spends the whole year doing nothing and just hanging around and none of Vader's feuds really interest me. This was the first WCW I THINK I might have ever seen live. Was this show the debut of the Beach Blast mini movie or was that on an Saturday Night episode around this time?

First off a special thank to all the PWO members who came up with this playlist for me! Wrestling with a Generation Gap begins a two part look at one of the greatest, but most obscure to modern fans, Nick Bockwinkel! We take a look at the Bock as he does battle with Verne Gagne, Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Wahoo McDaniel, Matt Murphy and teams with Ray Stevens to face the High Flyers. We also get some legendary promos and many appearances from the greatest manager of all time, the late Bobby Heenan. Rob shows a black and white match he knows literally nothing about, we try to figure out why the AWA title changed hands so many times in the 60's but almost never in the 70's (anyone know?) Dave and Nick see Ron Trongard as an old school Joey Styles, the underrated nature of Greg Gagne, Vernge Gagne, appreciation and controversy, why modern fans think today's wrestlers have shorter careers, Nick's great and varied promos, Greg Valentine's focus on attacking Native American's legs, Wahoo as the Terminator, a discussion on the worst of all time as we really digress on the last match. Nick Bockwinkel vs . KO Matt Murphy Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens vs. Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell Nick Bockwinkel vs. Verne Gagne Nickbockwinkel, Bobby Heenan, Bobby Duncum, Ken Patera vs. Andre the Giant & Hulk Hogan Nick Bockwinkel vs. Wahoo McDaniel A collection of Nick Bockwinkel promos The Broken Hardys vs. Decay

I think my company's policy of it's okay to listen to whatever you want on headphones might be changed based on the amount of gutbusting laughs I did between Will and Johnny arguing. I have to say, I consider myself a HHH hater from 1998 on and even I will have the guy on my list just based on how important a character he is. Kane too, probably. Don Muraco definitely and most likely Rollins. Not sure about Bray Wyatt. He and Cowboy Bob are battling for my 100 spot.

I am going to go with Disco Inferno. From the absolute absurdity of his using a giant disco ball to beat Kurasawa, to his needing a booklet to apply his leglock properly, to his wannabe NWO status, to his amazing stuff as a Filthy Animal, to making his music video to mock Konnan, he was a comedy highlight of WCW. WWF guy would be the Warlord but that's probably only because of his Phantom of the Opera mask to be honest. And the giant W staff because for years I have wanted to buy that for my best wrestling friend Will as a gag.

I am called the brain follower because to me, Bobby Heenan is the greatest entertainer in wrestling history. Like so many I didn't have the easiest childhood, but every Sunday afternoon I would look forward to an hour's antics of the Brain with Wrestling Challenge. He was truly the greatest, an inspiration with his razor sharp fast wit that inspires me every day (though my own humor is a little more modern) as an entertainer. If anyone is doing a podcast tribute, I'd really like to participate. I cannot be at his funeral obviously but I want to talk about how much that man meant to me.

Join us for a VERY special episode of Wrestling with a Generation Gap. Our first special in fact! If, like us, you recently purchased WWE's Unreleased Matches 1986-1995 collection, you might have been saddened (if not shocked) to find out there was no commentary for any of the matches. Fear not! For Dave, Nick and Rob have provided a running chat to sync with Disc 1. All of us are watching this stuff for the first time. Learn all about the many talents involved and Nick's deep rooted hatred of Hulkamania is finally explained. Dave tells more great one liners and I try to explain how main even dark matches worked and how awesome it is to finally have all this stuff released for the first time. We cover the slow decline of Andre, Rob discusses the best and worst LJN wrestlers, gushing over the insane selling of Marty Jannetty, the worst kayfabe nights of Demolition's WWF run, good debuts for Owen, Warrior, Dusty, The Powers of Pain and Bryan Adams, a bad debut for Earthquake and a whole lot more! Feedback is always welcome. Does anyone know the story of HOW those WWWF 4 shows happened to survive?

Good idea. I wonder how much, if any, of that footage would have fallen into PD by now.

Letters From Center Stage

Great episode! I think we all thought back in 95 we were the only ones who "got" why Mr. Wonderful's theme song was so amazing. And the return of Parv was a much welcome surprise. The living legend of podcasting returns.- 57 replies
