[1990-01-13-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Woman Wants Flair
bradhindsight replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Flair breaking down and putting over Sting's performance at Starrcade '89 after Cornette was pushing for Luger made the tournament seem really important. Continuity! -
I didn't catch this as JIP at all? Has the intros and the start of the match?

I went into this one completely cold - except that Loss mentioned the Fantastics work in Japan on the PTBN Tag Summit pod so I had an inkling this would be enjoyable. I liked this a lot, I guess maybe because I haven't seen the DVDVR AJW set? These teams were fresh for me - loved a number of spots (the assist out of the suplex, the reverse tombstone, the planchas) and the general tag work (breaking pins, frequent tags). Easy **** for me.

Funny enough, this stuck with me too. Good showing for Cactus and I also liked the touch with Sullivan on commentary (Cactus certainly seemed legit to me from how they talked). Cactus Elbow at the end and then that facial they got of Mick as they went to commercial really got over his craziness.

How about Lawler and Dutch totally adlibbing when Lawler says scentless instead of senseless? Those guys are great. Chris Champion's hair was just amazing. I actually enjoyed Dave running down the local Arkansas stops ($3 tickets!) as well as announcing all the random sponsors.

I'm with Parv, Dave Brown and Lawler have great chemistry. First exposure to Dave for me and I'm loving him. Lawler is great ad-libbing these calls - although that one lady that shouted "BORING" was obviously not amused. The other thing I took away from this was - these guys loved to have their back to the camera and the audience.

Where does one find Mr. Steve Yohe's stuff? The offshoot around good wrestling writers is something I've always been interested in. Is there one place on the internet that houses a majority of them?

Where the Big Boys Play #50
bradhindsight replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Pretty close on the booking. I have to say I'm flattered that my draft (and booking) was so well-received. Here's the link to both the results and the polls: http://placetobenation.com/where-the-big-b...-fantasy-draft/ -
[1990-01-06-NWA-Power Hour] Arn Anderson vs Great Muta
bradhindsight replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Really interesting watching a face Arn here. I don't think he had GREAT babyface offense but Muta was on it seemed I thought Arn made him look great. Excellent false finish after Buzz hit the elbow with the ref distracted. I bought that as being it. Loved the knees up on the moonsault leading to a staggering Muta getting DDT and Arn winning the TV Title. Awesome finish. The Dragon Master, slagged so unmercifully by Parv and Chad, does nothing to dispel the perception that he is horrid as the only thing he did was wave at Arn when Muta had him on the guardrail. Oh that and forget to break up the final pinfall for his partner. Fun with the hot crowd and definitely cool to see. Buzz Sawyer challenges Arn ONE WEEK FROM TODAY (and I peeked and it's on the set - yes!) with crazy high-pitched grunts. This backstory really makes the Clash match make more sense. -
[1990-01-12-NWA-Power Hour] Funk's Grill: Kevin Sullivan
bradhindsight replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Sullivan tries to talk a bit in circles and keeps coming back to Jr being developmentally challenged but Funk is having none of it. Well thought-out piece here.- 16 replies

[1990-01-07-NWA-Main Event] Ric Flair vs Bobby Eaton
bradhindsight replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
I was super excited for this one going in and it lived up to expectations. Face Flair was great to start with Eaton taking some great bumps and just flying all over the place. Loved the neck work and Flair's final comeback was perfect - especially the suplexes to the concrete. After letting Eaton work him over, Flair put in the perfect amount of offense before the finish. I thought the back-and-forth was just beautifully balanced in this one. One piece that I thought was genius (and I may or may not be completely imagining this) but after Cornette first jabs Flair in the throat, Flair chases him around the outside before he lays down, clutching his throat. The ref is watching now - and presumably could infer what Cornette did and DQ Eaton - BUT Bobby jumps down and immediately chops Flair in the throat on his way down. Did I read too much into this? Most likely, but I thought it was awesome psychology to cover for the illegal strike and then, of course, continue to work the throat/neck for the rest of the match.- 32 replies

Savage's quick looks and turns to the crowd are always perfectly engrained into his promos (and matches). Even if his status was lower here, he was still going 100%. Loved it.

[1990-01-06-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Interview: Four Horsemen
bradhindsight replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Sting with some really dumb foreshadowing here but he's fired up and everybody gets high-fives. Arn is just awesome again. Does he ever take a promo off? So crisp here. Just great. -
[1990-01-06-NWA-Worldwide] Interview: Four Horsemen
bradhindsight replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Had to remind myself the Horsemen were faces here (for now) and I like Parv's point about the "Minnesota Flair" stuff when he does non-heel promos. Arn cannot dial it down a notch and delivers.- 16 replies

I actually liked Gordon the best here (Flair is no slouch but it's the same lines from him when he's won in the past) as he seemed truly touched.

[1990-01-06-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and King Cobra
bradhindsight replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
For as much of a dick-heel that Lawler is, he balances the line and doesn't make anyone else look stupid (to diminish the feud) even though King Cobra can't keep up. Loved that Eddie Marlin was self-deprecating AND called Lawler out for the exact reason he wanted a no DQ match. Dave Brown was great as well.- 20 replies

Heenan's line of "The Hammer and Honky Tonk Man are...something" was just a classic delivery. Heel manager summits rule. Why couldn't they do this today? It would surely get over.

I'm all for videos like this - and the old Super Bowl Shuffle ones, but man they really needed to go THAT many verses? It was turning into the Never Ending Song there. Everyone was having an awesome time though. Awesome to see Owen in there. He was an easy one to pick out for sure.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3

Cena has a ready-made arm injury (well, recovery) for Del Rio to work through. I would be pleasantly surprised if they write Cena off again after the match due ADR's work.
