Hulk Hogan at the Hall of Fame! Or Hogan that night at Montreal where they had to go to a break because they popped for 5 minutes. That pop for Hogan in Montreal was insane and is on the short list of biggest pops ever. I really think Hogan got bigger reactions during that little nostalgia tour in 2002 than he did during that 80s run. Of course it wasn't sustainable but still. As far as best pops go, I will pile on the Austin run in during the Mankind title win in 99. The place really comes unglued.

It is tough for me to separate this match from the Spring Stampede match because I like both so much. I guess the post match destruction of the Nastys put this one over the top. Man, that crutch shot and guitar shot was something. Awesome all around. On a side note, 1994 was such a great year for WCW. I would put it right behind 92 for the decade. Spring Stampede and Slamboree were such great ppvs and BATB was really good too. I would say Fall Brawl was the end for wcw with Cactus leaving,Steamboat retiring and Austin jobbing in 30 seconds to Duggan.

I know I am going to repeat much that has been said already but this was the quickest and most enjoyable 60 minute match I have ever seen. Top 10 wwf MOTD for me. You can't say enough about what a great performance this was by flair. The post match interview was almost as good as the match. Heenan gave one of the best announcing jobs ever as well. While I think the 90 rumble had even more stars than 92, what puts this over the top is the final four participants. Looking through the eyes of kayfabe, Hogan,Flair,Sid and Savage were all legit contenders to win and while it's obvious now that Flair was going over, you had no idea who was winning at the time. The fact that the title was on the line added to the intensity. Anyway, best rumble ever. One of the best wwf matches ever. One of Flair's best matches.

[1998-01-19-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin, Vince McMahon and Mike Tyson
slabinski611 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
For my money, this is the biggest moment in raw history and near the top of biggest wrestling moments ever. The wwf was on its way to overtaking wcw anyway, but this is what got them over with the mainstream public. Best use of a celebrity ever. -
Count me in as liking this more than the mania match. This is top 5 wwf MOTD for me. Just fantastic. I would like to see the wwf 80s project redone with all of the footage that has been made available since it was done. While the guys went with what footage was available at the time, the original set is missing some truely great matches. This match, Tito/Valentine,Backlund/Patera, and the 6 man tag from right before mania 3 to name a few.

I have been checking out some WCW from the yearbooks lately and I have seen quite a bit of wrestling I haven't seen since it aired. What occured to me is how much more the pre Hogan wcw holds up compared to the nitro era. I would take stuff from the DA days over most of these lucha matches to the point where my top 100 MOTD would be totally different if I were to redo it now. My question to everyone is: Do you rather the DA/Sting/Vader/early 90s wcw or the Benoit/Malenko/Rey Jr etc nitro era matches ? BTW, early 90s wcw saturday night is where it's at.

What are the best Survivor Series tags ever?
slabinski611 replied to BigBadMick's topic in Pro Wrestling
I always liked the Survivor Series tags. It was something different. As noted already, the 20 man tags with all of those tag teams the first two years are my favorite. I also want to throw a shoutout to the Hogan/Andre match from 87. Whether you watch the clipped version or the full version it is so much better than you would expect. Bigelow was the star of the match but there was some good performances in that match that would surprise you. Only other one not mentioned that I liked a bunch was the Piper/Flair teams from 91. -
What was going on in that Invaderer 3 match ? Was it planned for him to throw up all of that blood because it was completely unnecessary. The only time I think an over the top blade job is ok is if the match is stopped for blood loss. The Eddy one is the worst one I remember but I have prabably seen worse.

I only know of the website solie wrestling that has a month by month collection of wwf/nwa/wcw rosters. I don't know if it's accurate but it is the only one I know of. I am interested in finding rosters for pre 87/post 97 wwf/nwa and 80s rosters for the old territories like awa,mid south etc. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I know Hebner liked drawing attention to himself but I cracked up during the In Your House ppv from 5/97. The main event was Austin/Undertaker and they kept doing the spot where Austin cheats but Hebner doesn't technically catch him. Then finally when Undertaker low blows Austin to gain advantage, Austin yells at Hebner to DQ him. Hebner, who knows that Austin had been cheating behind his back, turns to Austin and loudly says NO FUCK YOUUUUUU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! while shaking his head and giving the double finger.

That list for Jumbo in 76 looks awesome. I can't argue with any combination of Misawa/Kawada/Kobashi/Taue in the 90s. They were just on a different level. I would put Flair's run in the 80s up against anyone's in North America, especially 85 and 89. The Steamboat/Funk matches are considered among his best of his career and they were both in 89. I think he had the widest range of opponents in 85 though. You have good matches with Martel,Butch Reed,Dibiase,Taylor,Kerry Voneric,Wahoo,Magnum,Garvin. He also had matches with Lawler in Memphis, Billy Jack Haynes in Portland, Sgt Slaughter in AWA and I could go on. Flair was all over the place that year. This isn't to take away from his other peak years through the decade but 85 was his best imo. Also, I don't know the date of the match but there is a Flair/Wahoo match from 85 where they just stiff the shit out of each other. It's not the 2/3 falls match. It is just a singles match. Always been one of my favorites.

I know this must have been answered at some point earlier so forgive me. My first question is about the length of wwf ppvs up until 1992. Wrestlemania 2/3 were 3hrs each plus longer intermissions. I believe intermission was between 15-30 minutes for these shows. That means they would need to secure 4hrs of ppv time. WM 4-7 ran about 3hrs 45 minutes with shorter intermissions so they would have had to secure 4 hrs 30 minutes with the pre show. They also ran long at Royal Rumble 91 with a ppv length of about 3hrs 20 minutes which meand another 4hrs of ppv time. In 1992 all ppvs were under 3hrs and it would stay that way until they expanded wrestlemania at wm16. My question is : what happened that made them shorten thier ppvs in 1992. Why did they only have wrestlemania run long every year ? Why no extended summerslams. Why have the Rumble extended one year and not others ? My second topic is Wrestlemania 2. How was this produced for ppv ? I heard once that the matches were taped ahead of time and that they were being shown on pretape. It all looked live with all of the mass confusion throughout the show. Was the idea to have a card with 4 matches and for the live crowd to watch the rest on live circuit ? I can't see anyone paying to go see Piper vs Mr T have a fake boxing match with 3 of the poorest excuses for wrestling prior to it.

Since it's that time of the year again, what are your top 20 wrestlemania matches ? There is no wrong answer here. Just having some fun.

Most Successful Gimmick Based on an Actual Job
slabinski611 replied to Cross Face Chicken Wing's topic in Pro Wrestling
Does Sgt Slaughter count ? -
The first thing that came to my mind was Rock vs Hogan at WMX8. I don't know what could have followed that match but the crowd went from white hot to dead silent.

How detailed is the Rumble match worked. I used to have the idea that everyone knew their entry number and knew how they were being eliminated. I realized that was wrong as they started doing more spots as the years went on like the dance with Too Cool/Rikishi. It just seems like too much information for everyone to remember.

Your favorite surprises/swerves/heel turns.
slabinski611 replied to Carnival's topic in Pro Wrestling
I always felt Macho/Crush could have used a better, longer match. Savage always brought out his best for the big ppvs so you know he could have had a memorable match with Crush. Anyway, 10 surprises/heel turns I liked: 10. Summerslam 88: Brutus Beefcake is unable to wrestle because he was taken out by Ron Bass so The Honkytonk Man has no one to defend the ic title against. He grabs the mic and puts out an open challenge to anyone in the dressing room. The music hits and the Warrior flies down the ring and 30 seconds later we have one of the all time great moments in wwf history and one of the best squash matches I have seen. This was significant because it was a lengthy title reign for Honky and he was extremely over as a heel. It is also a great example of how to get a new babyface over. Before this match, Warrior was wrestling 10 minute horror shows against Hercules. Now he could carry the rocket on his ass to wrestlemania 6. 9. Wrestlemania 8 With a double main event and a hot Savage/Flair match, Hogan/Sid was closing the show. With Hogans popularity declining and the match ending in a dq finish, it was a good thing Vince had a surprise up his sleeve. Papa Shango ran down to interfere to and helped Sid double team Hogan. Then the music hit and making the save was the return of Ultimate Warrior. The fans popped huge instantly forgetting the lackluster match they just watched and prabably the rest of the card as well. The Warrior would only stick around 6 months before leaving again but as stated, this was a great send home happy type moment. More Later. -
I have known wrestling was fake since around 1990 or so (age 7). I must admit however, there have been times I was fooled. Name some times you thought something was real but obviously it turned out to be a work like everything else. Here are the 5 examples I thought of. 1. 1991- Jake Roberts unleashes his king cobra on Randy Savage. (I was 8) 2. 1993-Cactus Jacks head has a date with concrete. The Foley/Vader powerbomb match 3. 1995- Shawn Michaels collapses in the ring on raw. 4. 1996- Hulk Hogan turns heel. Ok, not a shoot but with no internet at the time, it was and remains the most shocking heel turn I have seen. 5. 1998- HIAC 2. Iknew the dive off the cage had to be planned but I thought Foley was legit injured until he got off the stretcher. Then, I didn't take the second, more painful cell bump as seriously because he already got up from the first.

I like Bret a ton but I am going with Flair. Both from an in ring standpoint, as well as on the mic and just the whole flashy persona I would take over Bret. When I watch a Bret match, I don't find myself getting invested in the match the way I do a Flair match. I can appreciate the WM10 match for being a great match but I don't connect with it the way I do with Flair/Funk. The exceptions for me are the two Austin matches and the Piper match. That has more to do with the Austin/Piper characters than Bret. If you take Bret Harts best opponents/matches it would be something like: vs Austin SS/WM vs Davey Boy SS/IYH vs OWEN WM vs PIPER WM vs PERFECT SS/KOTR That's 8 matches vs 5 opponents. By comparison here is some of Flairs competition vs STEAMBOAT 89series VS FUNK GAB/COTC VS WINDHAM BOTB/WORLDWIDE VS LUGER STARCADE88/WRESTLEWAR90 VS VONERIC 8/82,12/82 While you can argue that it's no fault of Bret that he didn't have the deep pool of talent to face like Flair did but it is what it is. Now here is where I think Flair wins in a landslide. If Bret Hart spent his whole career in his 1997 heel character as the bitter veteran wrestler who watched his fans turn on them then this would be a much harder debate. However, pre 97 Bret sucked on the mic imo. Even after Flair was washed up in the ring, he could deliver on promos. I'll take Flair with the suits, the limos, the catchphrases, even the comedy like the elbowdrops on the jacket over any Bret Hart babyface promo. I don't think this thread should be about what kind of match Bret had against Vince or why Flair was still wrestling in 2006. It should be about examining their entire careers, not just the end of their careers.

I think this has been asked already but are there any matches that deserve the ***** treatment that Dave has underrated ? Personally, I would give the full 5 to Hart/Austin from Survivor Series even though I put the WM match slightly ahead of it. Also, While I may be alone, I have no problem giving 5 to Enforcers/Steamboat/Rhodes from the Clash. It's on my short list for favorite U.S. tags ever. I don't recall seeing Arn gel with another partner the way he gelled here with Zbysko and that includes Tully. I'm not saying Zbysko was a better tag partner overall but he was in this specific match. Last, I don't see Misawa/Kobashi 1/20/97 on the list that was posted. Did Dave really not give that ***** ? Everyone has their own opinions but that is one of those I think about when GOAT threads get started.
