[1992-10-10-WCW-Saturday Night] Up Close w/Erik Watts
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
I am not a fan of the whole "promoter pushing his son" deal as a general idea, unless the son is someone as talented as Dustin seems right away. That being said, it is hard to put any blame on Erik Watts for trying to play the role he has been put into. If he had seemed big-headed about it I would probably think differently.- 9 replies

[1992-10-10-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Bill Watts
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Loved Watts here, good stuff. Didn't know that Boris Malenko was the originator of the Russian chain match or that the coal miner's glove initially was done in Memphis. Very cool.- 10 replies

[1992-10-10-WCW-Saturday Night] Contract Signing: Sting vs Jake Roberts
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
I was wondering what a Prince of Darkness match was! Thank you sir. For as goofy as the kickoff to spin the wheel was I like the job they have done with it since. Of course having two pros like Sting and Jake involved helps.- 9 replies

Foley conducting this interview was an awesome choice. I liked how the cobra played along to make the promo even better.- 10 replies

[1992-10-10-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett vs The Moondogs
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
By Memphis standards doesn't Lawler piledriving the ref and Lee damn near killed them? -
I see your point garetta, but it seems like Wright is the kind of character who would outright make stuff up. I thought both promos were really good and I am waiting with baited breath for Morton's surprise next week.

[1992-10-09-AAA-Sin Limite] Blue Panther vs Super Astro
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
I dug Panther not wanting to let go of the belt in the pre-match. I thought the execution was off through a lot of this. It seemed like one guy was a step slow on a lot of it. The layout was really well-done with Astro getting a lot of roll-ups and counters to keep Panther on the defensive and build the drama. Then Panther suckers Astro into the moonsault and takes control, only to have Astro turn the tables on him later. I just wish I thought the execution looked better in spots. Also caida 2 seemed too short even by lucha standards. Question for the more seasoned lucha folks. Is Blue Panther known for his nucadora? He seemed to use it a lot.- 17 replies

Taue and Williams really carried this I thought. Gordy and Jumbo for sure had their moments, but the lion's share of the work (and the big moments) went to the other two. The layout of the finishing stretch was incredible. I loved the symmetry of both teams working to a big double team after tossing the illegal partner out and then the big save in succession. Taue looks like a monster in this match. He was certainly benefitting from being next to Jumbo, but he more than holds his own.

I will agree that the style is preferable to AJW. Suzuki's early strikes took me out of the match right away though. Seemed like they were doing this weird stiffness/working holds morphing into AJW style (with Fukuoka even doing a Toyota dropkick sequence) and then back again. Which also took me out of it. Parts of it were good. Not a fan of a lot of it.

[1992-10-04-PWFG-Stack of Arms] Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Zaour Chabadze
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
I really liked how Fujiwara made Chabadze (holy crap does he look huge) look like a monster before catching the heel and submitting him. That half nelson where he was grinding Fujiwara's neck into the mat was gnarly.- 12 replies

[1992-10-04-PWFG-Stack of Arms] Naoki Sano vs Jerry Flynn
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Perfectly fine shootstyle. Sano looked super dominant on the mat for most of it with Flynn pulling some interesting counters out. -
[1992-10-04-PWFG-Stack of Arms] Joe Malenko vs Georgui Galdava
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Really cool finish with some slick matwork by Joe. Galdava used his size advantage well, but Malenko outclassed him by a long way on the mat. -
WCW is just so weird. For a promotion that is about the wrestling more than the sideshow antics and promos, the fans sometimes don't respond to the wrestling unless it's somebody who has already wowed them with the antics/promos. This was a great match with a structure that should have kept the crowd involved, but somehow it just didn't. Maybe hotshotting Gordy/Williams into the spotlight had something to do with that? I wonder if Watts wasn't trying a little too hard to put his stamp on WCW rightnow when he came in and would probably have done better working the stuff he wanted to do in gradually. As it is I'm surprised he didn't bring in JYD and start pushing him to the moon from day one. There was an idea in this thread involving Watts using Hayes as a mouthpiece for the MVC, which seemed like it might have worked. Would even have gotten past Watts' predeliction towards not having Hayes wrestle. So far for me the Watts era has been mostly bust and I kinda wish they had stuck with the Dangerous Alliance and worked Vader in as the newer big bad instead if this.

[1992-10-03-WCW-Saturday Night] Cactus Jack & The Barbarian training

Really good promo from Cactus here. I have always been a Barby fan and I like seeing him get a title shot and the push that comes with it. Even if it does seem hot-shotted.- 7 replies

[1992-10-03-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Shane Douglas
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Good standard babyface interview. I'll admit the belly-to-belly is well past it's time as a finish and Magnum TA isn't going to give Shane the rub in 92. If the belly-to-belly is so great why are the Steiners using it (better even) as a mid-match highspot?- 11 replies

One thing I've noticed when listening to Cornette talk on his podcast is that a part of what made him great as a manager (the insulting witticisms) can come off as really, really insensitive or even bigoted when not being said by a heel character in a wrestling promotion. Which makes me think that it is extremely likely the man has always had some attitudes and beliefs that I disagree with. Somehow the context they were being presented in made them less likely to offend due to the fact they were coming from a guy you were supposed to want to see get his ass kicked. That being said, his opinion of modern wrestling and mine tend to align. I think he goes a little far bemoaning the evils of it, but it's coming from a place I can agree with. In general, when he talks about wrestling and the presentation of it (not the people involved that he doesn't like) he comes across as a super intelligent guy who gets what it's all about.

Liked this a lot. The crowd was nuts, especially for Sting. Sting's hip swivel after the posedown was great. I know he never truly got his chance due to booking and poor management of the company, but the guy got it and should have had a big run. The Steiners really weren't doing their usual act here, as mentioned above. If Rude doing a bearhug to Scotty is weird, what would you describe Bobby doing a bearhug to Scotty as? Batshit insane?

I really enjoy how Corny will interject the other angles and a little humor about them (the remark about having a woman come in and clean) into his promos without affecting the seriousness of what he is trying to get across. Great promo all-around.
-
i thought it was easily Horner's best promo. Wright and DWB of course blew it away. Seems like Horner is quite a bit smaller than DWB so having him as the underdog makes sense, as long as he doesn't look too weak.

For as goofy as it is Ronnie Garvin getting more upset over a towel than the hanging he is cutting good promos. I get not highlihgting that as we have Horner dealing with the same issue on the same show. Maybe only book one hanging next time.

[1992-09-26-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Bruno Sammartino
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
Bruno definitely has an axe to grind with the WWF. It's also the same axe I would grind with them, but maybe dial it back a bit and talk about more of what you like about WCW. Bruno putting over Simmons makes a ton of sense.- 8 replies

[1992-09-26-WCW-Saturday Night] Dustin Rhodes vs Jake Roberts
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
Not much more to be said about this one. Really well-worked, solid, basic match. Which, to Sleaze's point earlier in the thread, should have been the heart of every WCW card...oh, ever. Funny how a guy like Jake could make a match like this that should seem run-of-the-mill seem great and yet not have his personal shit figured out. And on the opposite side of the coin how all the flash and movez of the modern day somehow don't do the same in the ring and the workers are much more likely to have their act together outside the ring. Seems wrong.- 14 replies

I thought the Robert Fuller promo was great. The idea of a Fuller/Lawler alliance in the WWF and being anti-drug in a heel ways is super fun. The hanging was really well-done, but I didn't buy Bob's "I've never seen anything like this!" line. Did we not just see Orndorff do the same with a torn up towel a week or two ago? And yeah, Horner was never gonna be your main babyface.

[1992-09-26-USWA-TV] Interview: Jimmy Hart / Interview: Dream Warriors

Loved Hart's promo, but the second one was utter nonsense. Was it me or did the manager in it have to keep himself from laughing at Screamer and not quite succeed?- 9 replies
