  1. Greatest superheavyweight ever, by a margin of light years. Excellent in every setting and promotion. RIP.
  2. Great find. Kawada turned into a wrestling genius whenever this guys faced off, unreal chemistry. Very different dynamic from the 10/95 match. fxnj has covered all the key points especially the part about Kawada's smug asshole character work. Really great match, possible Top 10 contender for AJPW during the 90s. ****1/4
  3. But it's not encouraging discussion, that's sort of my point. Most, if not all, of the interesting debates are taking place in the discussion folder. I don't know, maybe it's me but the nomination process just feels like an obligation. Also a giant number of matches being nominated was always going to be an issue with this kind of project. But I seriously doubt people will nominate random matches they are not considering for their lists. I agree with this. If a match can't convince 3 people that it is worth considering, it's probably not worth considering. This is assuming people have actively watched the matches nominated and thought they weren't good enough, which is a huge leap. More likely is that they haven't got to them yet.
  4. Great rec Sleeze. Yet more evidence that Shawn was a compelling offensive wrestler. Really good match. Pretty unique layout as Shawn controls his much larger opponent for large chunks of time. Tenacious and focused arm work on Batista, who sold well. Clever finish. ***1/2
  5. One thing I'll say about Okada and Omega is kudos to them for living up to and even surpassing the insane hype the match had in other circles. A lot of people thought anything less than the GOAT match would be disappointing and this actually delivered for them. Agree with superkix, their G1 match is the best and is a true classic in my view. I liked this fine but, for modern wrestling specifically, I'll take compact over epic any day.
  6. Glad you liked it. And I agree that's a match everyone should check out, for the sheer uniqueness value atleast.
  7. I agree 100% with this. I think the strict nomination process is actually hurting discussion and participation (opposite of the original intent). I think if a person nominates a match, it should automatically be eligible to vote on. This would actually free up time for interesting discussions and topics and be less of a burden on everybody. Enforcing a deadline before which everything has to be nominated is fair (for statistical processing or however way the final list is determined). I'm not in charge but I request Grimmas or whoever is responsible to change the nomination policy.
  8. Yeah, those Jumbo head stomps were a thing of beauty. Negro Casas has amazing ones too.
  9. Yeah, that extended resthold segment was not the best idea.
  10. I think it's hurt by that fact it's not hosted here, which would have been ideal because of maximum exposure/visibility. But I can understand the reasons Loss indicated and his decision, though I'll say the discussion has been a lot more, uh, pleasant (for lack of a better word). Also I think the burnout factor is less of an issue because of the diversity of stuff nominated and the fact you're not watching multiple matches from one wrestler in a row. The podcasts idea is a good one.
  11. Tanahashi vs. Okada from 5/4 was given a *****1/2 rating. So, accordingly, 5 out of the 6 greatest matches in wrestling history have apparantly happened since the beginning of 2017.
  12. Speaking of, I didn't realize it until now but the Daniel Bryan vs. Brock Lesnar dream match is back on the table (in theory atleast). Ideally, it should have happened at some point in 2014/2015 when Brock was at his best but better late than never.
  13. I agree with fxnj in that this is very good but not a classic. Stuff I really liked - Funk's ultra aggressive arm work, his third fall fatigue/blood loss selling and his stubborn, tenacious attempts to secure the spinning toe hold even if it was getting his face caved in. I liked Race's punches and headbutts in the third fall but he brought nothing otherwise, in fact he actively hurt the match at times. I wanted to point out one sequence in particular: In the third fall, a bloody Funk is working over the right leg of Race. Race's selling is minimal but at one point he decides to drop a kneedrop with his left leg. Then proceeds to sell that leg for nearly 1 minute in what is probably the dumbest spot I've ever seen in wrestling. After that Funk returns to working over the right leg (as he should) like nothing happened. That spot nearly killed the match for me and almost made me want to yell at my screen "You had an injured leg RIGHT THERE to do that exact spot and it would have fit the context perfectly and looked great".
  14. I've been watching a lot of AJ Styles over the past few months and I think AJ's WWE run is actually his weakest. I mean he consistently delivers good performances but it's lacking in the high end matches, unlike NJPW and especially TNA.
  15. As if you needed more proof that Otsuka was one of the most versatile performers in history. Great mix of styles match with some outstanding Otsuka selling. Bizarre and fascinating. Truly amazing spectacle. ****1/4 elliot wrote a great piece on why he thinks this is a possible Top 10 match for all time: http://gweproject.freeforums.net/post/2280/thread
  16. Dynamite Kid often gets painted as a workrate guy but he displays a lot of heel charisma and viciousness here. Fujinami turns in a super babyface performance. Great match. ****
  17. This match has become pretty underrated actually, IMO. Incredible Bret performance, playing the subtle heel vs. the hometown hero. Amazing heat and great drama. Low end MOTYC for 1992. ****1/2
  18. Decent for Tanahashi heel work and him turning up the aggression with regards to the armwork. But in a lot of ways this just feels like an inferior version of the Invasion Attack match. Okada's arm selling also isn't nearly as good. **3/4
  19. Not officially a part of this but I'd like to recommend Jun Akiyama vs Masao Inoue from NOAH, 4/23/2006 to MattD (or anyone for that matter). It's been compared to the acclaimed Kobashi/Ogawa match from 2003 and it's unlike any AJPW/NOAH style main event ever. It honestly might make my Top 10 for GME. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x384vpg
  20. The fact that the divisive Shawn and Bret (my #1 and #2) made every ballot and Hogan, Austin and Bruno didn't is sort of hilarious. I was hoping Austin would win but a close #2 is respectable. I completely forgot to vote for Hogan (who I dislike strongly so probably subconsciously dismissed). Luckily, it didn't influence his placement.
  21. I'll go with Bret vs. Austin, though it's close. The intricate storytelling and character work connect with me more than the pure emotion of Atlantis-V3. Both should make my Top 50 for GME.
  22. I said pretty much this in the MDA thread for this match and still think it's 100% true. That was the PERFECT match and moment to crown the new ace. Lesnar was at the absolute height of powers (both artistically and in kayfabe) as the invincible monster with incredible momentum (the guy who broke the streak and squashed John Cena) and Roman dethroning him then would have cemented him as the top guy instantly. But they didn't strike when the iron was hot and now we are where we are. If nothing else, that match would have had a proper finishing stretch and made the Top 25 for GME.
  23. I actually enjoyed the show. Yes, the booking was dogshit but the match quality was pretty good for the most part. Ruby Riott vs. Bayley - Fun start. Featured some excellent selling by Bayley. Seth Rollins vs. Miz - Eh, this was alright, better than expected but I think people are overrating this. Hot finish. Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax - Prefer the WM match but this is still good. Bliss is turning into a really good worker. Very solid control segments on a larger opponent. The tenacious corner guillotine spot was my favorite. Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton - Boring Daniel Bryan vs. Big Cass - Cass might be the worst wrestler on the roster but the wrestler of the millennium can do no wrong. Amazing carryjob by Bryan. He even managed to salvage the finish with those nasty crossface smashes after Cass fucked it up. Very good ***1/2 ish match. Carmella vs. Charlotte - Decent match. Carmella impressed me here. Cool heel work and focused offense. However, the more I watch Charlotte against anyone not named Sasha Banks, the more I think she is actually not very good. I liked the story of Charlotte not taking the match seriously (though she could have done a better job illustrating that) and paying the price but the finish here makes the decision to end the streak at WM even more infuriating. AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura - Stupid finish aside, a very good match. Way more intensity and fire compared to GRR and a much better structure. The chair ricochet spot was brutal and I dug the AJ stooping to Nakamura's level with the lowblow. ***3/4ish, on par with WM Braun Strowman/Bobby Lashley vs. Kevin Owens/Sami Zayn - Ok but a little long Samoa Joe vs. Roman Reigns - Awesome start but I'll admit the resthold portion hurt this badly, though I enjoyed Joe's character work during. I think the people who pointed out that the segment was laid out to make Joe come across as boring and thus have the crowd boo him more relative to Roman might be spot on, which (if true) is just sad. It picked up big time after, even though they lost the crowd, with hard hitting, intense action. Roman was somewhere close to his best after disappointing showings vs. Brock and Joe was great. I know people really hated this but I thought it was a very good match (***1/2) that could have been even better if it wasn't for a poor layout. Booking wise, Roman is dead in the water.
  24. that is not a common view people would say that in the 1990's Misawa was better. im more in the Kawada was best in the ring in the 1990's but post-Noah split Misawa and Kobashi became better and Taue i Like the most but taking an objective view or as Objective as wrestling can be Taue was the worst in the ring Yes, I am aware that's not a common view. That's sort of the point here. I agree with 1/2 of this i think he is way overpraised minus the GWE casts here I have never seen or read Criticisms of him in ring his backstage stuff yes, by fan he Idolized in every Major FB wrestling group iv ever been a part of every time I try to Criisizse him. i was the only deceting voice so i fail to see how he is underrated. i know this is anecdotal but Fujiawra is very good pick here he is so underrated No offense shodate but did you even read the topic of the thread? It's wrestlers who are overrated in one community and underrated in another. Michaels fits that perfectly (criticized way too unfairly here hence underrated) but praised as undisputed GOAT elsewhere (hence overrated). The Ogawas are rated here (a little too highly IMO hence overrated). Plus your Fujiwara pick support doesn't make sense, what about the overrated part?
  25. This is an amazing piece of work that would make my all time Top 50. Very different from their other matches too with a urgent, almost desperate Misawa vs. a more cerebral Kobashi. Two points stand out: Kobashi managing to make a comeback after the ramp tiger suplex and him finally hitting the Burning Hammer. Combined with Misawa's look after the Emerald Flowsion kickout, they make for the ultimate passing of the torch moment. ****5/8
