Holy shit! Talking about best/favorite matches under 10 minutes?? Ted Dibiase is in two of my favorites. #1 vs. Magnum TA on 5/27/84 (pretty sure that's under 10), and this match is has to be pretty high on that list. Hansen starts this sucker off with a MONSTER lariat. Then they work over the head of Tenryu. I love Hansen cutting off the hot tag with his knee. Dibiase and Jumbo both dish out some nasty strikes in this match. Jumbo is truly amazing once he gets the hot tag. He's a madman. I loved the drama of Hansen hitting the lariat on Dibiase on the outside, and Jumbo crawling in to beat the count.

#390 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-400-351/ I actually just watched this about a month ago, but I decided to watch it again while taking my journey through the Top 500 matches of the 90's according to Loss. I love watching Dustin and Arn go at it. There's just something special with their chemistry. Dustin slamming the back of Arn's head against the cage is just brutal/awesome. Interesting spot trapping Arn's head between the two rings. I thought Dustin's flying clothesline looked perfect. Funk is great here too. I think the PG rating hurt it just a little bit for me, just because when you think of War Games, you think of violence. I still think it is great, and I think I'd have it at number three on my War Games list (only behind 92 and 91). I'm kind of with Will thinking it could be my second favorite (over 91) had it reached the violence level of some of the older ones. I have 92 at *****, 91 at ****3/4, and this at around ****1/4 to possibly ****1/2. Great match. I also really enjoyed Meng in his role.

I totally agree - Watching all these shows chronologically really gave this show a special feel. I had a blast watching this and listening to your show after. This was the first wrestling VHS I ever rented (around 4 years old I believe). It was Hogan and T on the cover that sold me, but I ended up watching Steamboat vs. Borne over and over instead. I still think that match is fun, but the main event is definitely the match of the night. I really loved it. The heat is off the charts, and I'm probably closer to Scott with the rating ( around ***1/2). I also enjoyed Tito/Rose and the Andre/Studd slam challenge. Like you guys, I've watched this multiple times. This is definitely the most I've ever been into it, and I have new found respect for it. Piper was obviously the best heel in the WWF at the time, but I would also think the most popular in the US at this time? I think one of the reasons Gene was taken out of the booth, besides what you mentioned, was that Vince wanted the show to have a different feel (uniqueness) - since Gene was normally the MSG guy at the time - it made sense to add something special and different with Ventura. Also, on your Rose discussion, I got the feeling they had plans to unmask Buddy Rose in the future. In his promo he mentioned that we would find out who is in the future - but, who knows... (guess that didn't happen)...

This turned into an epic bloody war. Great match. I'd probably have it around ****1/2. They start this off with some brutal striking, and by the end they're both bloody and slugging it out. Pro Wrestling!

I think you will be very pleased with 10/21/1986 when you get to it.

This match is awesome! I really loved how Choshu worked this match. From what I can recall, he actually didn't even go for the sharpshooter once. He was out for blood. I thought both guys put on a hell of a show here. Great match - echoing the sentiments above - ****1/2 - I just love the emotion from Khan calling for three when he thinks he has or should have pulled it off.

The hate-fueled multiple slaps to the face are awesome. I agree that this match is really good, but it doesn't quite reach the level of the previous match for me. I really enjoyed the focused attack on the ribs from Jumbo & Tenryu. I really like Choshu as the FIP. I think watching the last two matches of him delivering great selling performances have shown me the light in regards to his versatility in the ring. Great finish.
-
Yeah, this is great! I love when Jumbo slaps Yatsu, then basically throws him in the corner to tag Choshu. Choshu is great selling the beatdown as the FIP. I like how he continues to sell the ribs when he has Jumbo locked in the Sharpshooter. The entire match is really intense, but during the sequences where the action spills to the outside, it goes from 10 to 11. *****

[1992-04-05-WWF-Wrestlemania VIII] Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
#393 http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-400-351/ I really love this match. It totally holds up, and it's always a go to for me during the holidays. I just love the emotion, story, and performances from both guys. I do think the dog collar match is better, but I don't want that to take from this. There is a great Buddy Rose/Piper match too - like Dylan mentioned. That Perfect match is awesome from 1990, and there is a fun Bruno cage that I recall. Some really good ones from Portland to seek out are (besides Rose): vs. Ed Wiskowski on 08/23/1980. There is a great match with Rose and Wiskowsi vs. Piper and Martel on 08/02/1980. Also: checkout the Piper/Martel Sheepherders feud from Portland especially all of 5/31/1980 - great tv- 38 replies

[1985-10-21-AJPW] Ric Flair vs Rick Martel (NWA vs AWA Title)
JKWebb replied to JKWebb's topic in October 1985
His AWA stuff is is fantastic. -
Thanks! That's why I got thrown off by it ha .... yeah Martel was awesome and Choshu.... as you said ... super over
-
This match rules. I thought Hase was just awesome here. The way sells the impact of each Kobashi blow (of any type) is fantastic. Each time it looks so devastating and draining to him. His offense is explosive and unique. That, coupled with my love for Kobashi, puts this one over the top for me. I'm a sucker for focused limbwork, so I was really feeling the left knee/leg attack on Kobashi. #394 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-400-351/

I went back and read the arguments for Choshu in the GWE threads. I thought it was an interesting point that the ScorpionDL/Sharpshooter was treated so differently at that time. Unlike how Hart/Sting used it... it didn't typically cause someone to tap out immediately... So, if you're conditioned to seeing that for years ... it can seem quite out of place the way Choshu works it until you get used to it. I do think, for my tastes, he relies on it too heavily, but its definitely possible the more I watch of him that opinion may change.

[1985-11-18-CWA-Mid-South Coliseum] Ric Flair vs Koko Ware
JKWebb replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in November 1985
Yeah, just wanted to throw in I absolutely loved this match too when I ran across it while diving into 80s Memphis. It's definitely one of the matches that stood out to me, and would've made my top 10 I'm pretty sure. I'm down with ****1/2. Both guys here deliver great performances and have you hanging onto the edge of your seat. -
I thought this was really good. Rick Martel is a selling machine in this match, and there's also a really cool spot from Flair - Martel had him in the figure four prior - He jumps on Martel's leg and falls selling his own knee. I thought Flair was too focused on begging off at first, but after he seems to get annoyed with Martel, he turns that around. Really cool to see the AWA champ face the NWA champ. Really enjoyed this one.
-
I remember liking that one too. I guess those are likely the top 2.
-
Really enjoyed the Bundy squash and Andre. Santana and Valentine deliver the goods again! **** Really wish we could've seen them face at Mania... Mainly because I think it would shine a bigger spotlight on the feud today for more casual fans. I think this is probably the best WWE lumberjack match. Or, I couldn't think of one off of the top of my head anyway.
-
Everytime I watch Rick Martel in the 80s he gains more traction in my all-time favorites list. I'd say he's already in my top 15 for sure. The guy is just the ultimate babyface in the ring. I might have seen this match when I went through the AWA 80s, but I don't remember seeing it prior to tonight if I have. Choshu goes to work on the left arm early on. Martel is wincing in pain, gets a nice fiery hope spot, then back to the left arm when Choshu cuts him off. Choshu early on, per usual from what I've seen, shifts focus to the Scorpion Deathlock. I don't like how out of nowhere this seems and dominating this is in some of his matches I've seen. The last three or four Choshu matches I've seen, all around this time, are just him going for the Scorpion Deathlock. It's kind of how Brock Lesnar went through that timeframe of nothing but suplex city. They end up trading some suplexes and Choshu apparently gets a close call win with one. It's hard to say, because to me it looked like Martel kicked out, but the ref signals for the Choshu victory. They show the replay of a nice lariat that Martel sold like a champ. This obviously was not a title match, or I'm wrong about the ending. Not sure what to think of this one.
-
I really got into this when the right arm work kicked in. Not that it wasn't good in the beginning...it just got really good. Jumbo with some nice selling and Tenryu is fired up wanting to impress Jumbo. I like how he looks to him for approval and/or adulation before hitting a big move. There's a really sweet lariat from Hansen onto Tenryu when Tenryu tries to break up a double team. Really good match!

[1985-03-17-WWF-MSG, NY] Greg Valentine vs Tito Santana (Lumberjack)
JKWebb replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in March 1985
These guys deliver the goods again and again and again... I could watch these two punch each other all day. Valentine is off the charts with his selling in this match. This might be the best lumberjack match I've ever seen? I can't recall one better of the top of my head anyway. I agree it's not the best of their feud, but it is still great, and really fun. I think if this match at happened at WrestleMania, it would be more remembered by the "WWE Universe." They should have put these two on that card against each other in some way. I love Valentine smacking Santana in the face while he works on the leg, and the frustration he shows when he can't put Santana away. I felt like the three count was pretty fast at the end? Still, it was awesome. **** -
[1992-12-28-WCW-Starrcade '92] Big Van Vader vs Sting
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in December 1992
I actually think it is the ideal David/Goliath match. It's probably my favorite match. This is a match I can watch anytime. It's awesome. Is it The Godfather? No. But is it Rocky IV, yeah it is. I don't want to pick it apart or analyze it. I just want to enjoy it for what it is. It's one hell of an action packed fight with Sting probably delivering the best performance of his career. I would echo most everything Sleeze said above. I love the Bash and strap match too. I do think Flair/Steamboat is The Godfather Trilogy or a better title might be Lord of the Rings. But the Sting/Vader trilogy is like Star Wars or better yet Die Hard - It's just awesome and really damn fun. Coming back to add this hit #59 on the list created by Loss. placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/2/ I can say, that I would rank the trilogy as follows: 1. Starrcade 2. Superbrawl 3. GAB -
I gotta say, it has a special feel to it when Steamboat first walks out and says - one more time, you and me etc... It really got me hyped for the match. I love the chop/slap exchange in the early stages of the match. They both look fired up. I'm sorry, but the lone foot on the top rope does not give the visual that Flair would have more leverage on a pin. Steamboat starts working on the left leg down the line, and before he puts on the figure four, he levels Flair with huge slap to the face. It really looked brutal. You never get the feeling they are running through the motions here. They are out for blood. They are focused on the championship. The match doesn't have the feel of, let's give them one more classic match. It looks like they want to win, and that's part of what makes this so great. I actually watched Stampede 94 a few months ago, but it's not fresh enough in my mind to fairly compare them. I think they are both great. I may like this one a little more, because it has such a different feel to it. It's different, but in a good way. I see some are down on the finish, but that's how I felt about that too (different in a good way). I liked the story they told. I loved the match. ****1/2 #395 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-400-351/ Making an edit here - I came back and watched this in November of 2019. I'm even higher on it. I do prefer it to the Spring Stampede match, and truly feel like it is a MOTYC for 1994. FANTASTIC. I don't like star ratings anymore, but if I did them I'd go higher than I did three years ago....

[1994-04-01-SMW-Bluegrass Brawl] Chris Candido vs Tracy Smothers (Ladder)
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1994
This started off fast, and I was really into it. Then, Smothers got sloppy for a bit. But, it picked back up once the ladder was introduced. Some of the ladder shots looked pretty weak. I don't think they need to beat the crap out of each other to have a good match, but if you're going to use something like a ladder, or a chair, it needs to look convincing. But hey, as soon as I was thinking that, Smothers hit Candido with a nasty looking suplex on onto the ladder. Ouch, the missed frankensteiner bit looked painful too. I didn't particularly care for the head caught in the ladder spot by Candido, but loved the recovery of pulling the ladder in front of himself as Smothers went for the splash. The ladder breaking really adds to the drama of the finish. This doesn't compare to Razor/HBK to me, but it was still really good. It had its hits and misses. ***1/2. #397 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-400-351/- 11 replies

It's cool to see Doink working 2 out of 3 falls here after watching all of the Portland 80s footage. Jannetty delivers a fantastic performance, and I just have to think all the experience Matt Borne had working 2/3 falls TV matches really helped in building/delivering a nice structure to the match. The guys work really hard here and deliver a really good to great performance - it's somewhere around ***3/4 to **** for me. Probably closer to ***3/4. #399 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-400-351/
