  1. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/ #423 I was a little underwhelmed by the first two falls. I thought the the third fall was good and entertaining. I really didn't like the spot where Santo was hanging on the ropes waiting for Rey to pummel him with a leg drop. That kind of stuff will suck me right out of a match. It's really cool to see these two go, and the majority of the third fall makes this a match worth your time if you are a fan of these two. **3/4
  2. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/ #424 I thought this was good. Some of the selling didn't really match the impact in early portions of the match, but it developed into some really good hard-hitting action.
  3. Yeah, loved the new show! Was able to watch the card then listen. I plan to keep following along that way. Loved Tito vs. Valentine - went ****1/4.
  4. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/ I thought his was great. I specifically liked the pacing of the beginning of the match. Jumbo does little things I like, like taking a few deep breaths before he can get up enough strength to power out of Misawas wrist locks. Anyway, very entertaining closing run... I'd have it somewhere around **** so far, I think I'd have this behind the two from the 90s, but I don't mean that to take away from it at all. Loss #425 - Top 500 Matches of the 90s
  5. If we are comparing this to Flair/Vader, then I'd say I like Flair/Vader better.
  6. I watched this tonight and absolutely loved it! I watched the entire 1/21/85 card, and by doing so, you get such a high appreciation for what these guys were doing. This is a great match. I loved the fire and the comeback punches from Tito. The finishing sequence is glorious - love this. ****1/4
  7. Yeah, the beginning of this match is pretty sloppy. The commentators hint Pillman is a little different now because he isn't smiling and isn't high-fiving and conversing with fans on his way to the ring. The Boston Crab Pillman puts on Badd looks pretty awful, and he lets it go for no reason. Badd even looks a little surprised. Tony sells it that he just wants to punch Badd in the face, I guess I can buy it if they are trying push him more as a heel, but it doesn't really make any sense. The fans do start to boo Pillman after that, so I guess it worked. The match still has some sloppiness to it, but Pillman is effective with the heel persona, and the story of the match starts to suck you in. Badd gets some nice hope spots in, and Pillman cuts him off each time. I hate the name of the Tutti Frutti, but it looked great here. I'm glad Patrick gets authorization for sudden death, because the match needed more time. Now I'm feeling it... we're getting some stiff strikes and some emotion. Badd gets a little hyper coming out of submissions. It almost seems out of nowhere. Most of the time you see someone catch their arm from falling prior to the three count, then they start to build the power out, and then there is the fiery come back. Both times in this match, he just starts having spasms immediately at the three count and gets out of the hold, but it doesn't really go anywhere. It's almost like going into convulsions is enough to get you out of a sleeper hold. Badd's offense does look explosive. I liked him tossing Pillman onto the guardrail with an awesome attack tot he outside. I loved Pillman cutting him off with knees and taking over. Crazy dive from Pillman to the outside onto Badd. Pillman going for the kick off the top and Badd dodging causing Pillman to the ropes was pretty sweet. I'm not sure I've ever seen that done exactly that way, but it was a cool spot. They do collide mid-ring, but it looked like to me Pillman fell on top then Badd rolled himself on top. I think Pillman does deliver a pretty solid heel performance here, but I guess I just don't see this as a great match. I liked it, but didn't love it. #427 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  8. I just watched this match recently, and probably for the third or fourth time in my life. I really agree with most of what everyone has said in the thread. Really good and bordering great. What a moment! They really delivered here, and especially Sherri - She was incredible. #428 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  9. I've never been a big fan of that roll around pinning spot that starts this match off. It's such a minor thing that happens in the match, that I hate to even mention that. The striking is super stiff. If this exact match happened today in WWE's women's division, I wonder how it would be "rated" by fans? I would think that the rating from most WWE fans would be higher than **** if this happened today in the United States. But then again, this type of match probably wouldn't happen on WWE TV, as some of the action may be considered too brutal? I was reminded a bit of Kawada because of those vicious kicks and the black and gold sported by Yamada. I thought Yamada did a good job selling the left leg, and Toyota's offense was explosive at the right times. As much of a beating that Toyota took, I thought some of her selling could have been better. There were times it didn't seem very focused. It would have been better to me if she had sold some fatigue or pain when running through her offense during comebacks as the match went on. Overall, I guess I sort of felt this was a little to go-go to hit great for my taste, but I still think it was really good ***1/2. #430 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  10. Once Owen gets tagged in, the match kicked in for me. I thought he looked great here. Good chemistry with both Steiners, and I especially enjoyed the opening exchange with Rick. Bret sold the attack from Rick and Scott like he'd been shot in the stomach. He seemed pretty sluggish, and there weren't really any hope spots, but I think he was just trying to appear dominated by the Steiners before getting the hot tag to his brother. Well I thought that, until he didn't produce any fire at all after finally hitting a suplex on Scott to the outside. He just rolls Scott back in the ring, and there is no excitement built at all for the tag to Owen. This is when Gorilla became annoying to me. We already had the downer tag, now we have Gorilla bashing Owen's strategy. If you would have asked me prior to watching this match, I would have assumed Bret/Scott to have been the most interesting matchup in this tag. But, I definitely like the Owen/Rick chemistry more. Scott hits a sweet piledriver on Owen. Oh yeah, Bret Hart is in this match - he makes the save. Owen finally gets the "hot" tag to Bret, and he comes in very paint by numbers and uninspired. We get a DQ, but the Steiners challenge the Harts to get back in and we get a nice brawl/pull apart. It thought Owen was really good in the match and I liked the brawl at the end. Bret's performance (and I do like Bret Hart) and the lack of structure held this one down for me. ***1/4. I do miss the "share the purse money" lines. #431 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  11. I dig the camo Hulkster. Was there an action figure of this? I've always been a fan of their match at WrestleMania VII, but crazily enough I have never seen this before today. Slaughter is fantastic in this match. Hogan PUMMELS him. This is the most violent you will ever see Hogan in the WWF. The crowd seems to be eating it up too. Once Slaughter takes over on offense, he sells the fatigue from the beating he just took so well. The chair spot is pretty funny, yet as pointed out... almost sensible! It really plays off the fatigue, and that a few minutes later he tries to go to the top rope and falls off. I saw this as consistent story telling from Slaughter, and liked that aspect of the match. The fireball looked awesome. I love the comeback and the finish of the match. Really enjoyed this one. Great match. #433 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  12. This is one of those matches that I usually recommend to friends that are fans of Flair and/or Pillman, but probably don't remember it (or have never seen it). This match is great. It's full of intensity, and I love how fired up Pillman is right from the start. Even a monster chop from Flair won't slow him down. He's out to prove a point, and they just beat the crap out of each other. Flair's chest gets busted open from the chops. He has to grab a chair to get Pillman to cool down, and so he can gather his thoughts. The vicious chops continue. Pillman goes after the leg of Flair. I've seen the 90 match, and I do think I prefer this one. It seems to be more memorable. Flair gets back on top and works his usual antics. They push the toughness of Pillman, and Flair does a pretty funny thrust at someone in the crowd. Flair keeps trying to pull out the W with feet on the ropes, and he shows his frustration to the crowd. They go back to beating each other as a sort of hope spot for Pillman, which ends with a low blow. Flair pulls out some slaps to the face while Pillman is down, and you really want to see it get handed back to him. The exchanges continue to be brutal. I love the story they are getting over with Pillman, and I think both guys really delivered in their roles here. Great match! #434 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  13. This was really good! Barry looked awesome, and I thought Scorpio was excellent on the back stretch. I also really enjoyed the commentary. The finish is perfect. I don't think it hits quite the same level as Perfect/Hart from KOTR 93. ***3/4 #435 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  14. I've seen this match quite a few times, but it has been awhile. So, I was looking forward to re-watching it again today. From memory, I definitely thought Bret Hart vs. Piper was a better match, and I also have always held the Savage-Liz reunion in higher regard. Granted, as a kid, I wasn't invested in anything more than Randy Savage, and ultimately was engrossed in the storyline of their reunion as a youngster. So, I know there is a nostalgia factor there. Watching this today, I still feel like, even to an outsider or non-wrestling fan, there is just more of an emotional moment with Savage and Liz. But, this isn't about that. This was a really great feel good moment. I still like the Piper/Hart match better as well. I actually think I would have Savage vs. Flair a little higher than this for me. I don't want to sound down on the match though, because off the top of my head I think I would have this as my number three to four match of the year in WWF behind those two. The moment itself, is probably the best of 92 in WWF. I do think Bret Hart was the glue, but I didn't get the impression that it was the huge carry job that some think it be. Davey held his own with some pretty great spots. I'm sure Bret was calling the spots, but Davey is the one that had to deliver them. I'm thinking of one with the amazing superplex towards the end. I think this was really good, with a great finish and moment. ***3/4 #436 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  15. I really appreciate the narrative and background from Sleeze above. I've seen most of these matches, but a lot of times out of order, and not exactly knowing the story within. I love the idea of Kobashi as the young hotshot reverting back to what he does best - causing him to abandon the arm. He's going conservative and sticking with what he knows. This is such a great thing to be able to see and point out. The focused attack on the neck of Misawa is awesome. I'm right there with the ****1/2. #437 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  16. Yeah, this was extremely brutal. I'm with Chad on the finish - the odd part is the fast count. Some of the striking wasn't so great, but a lot of it was. The chain choking was ferocious. I loved the headbutt to the ref on the outside. This is a hard match to grade, but I'll say it's definitely memorable. #439 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  17. Man, Kobashi is awesome in this. He's one of my all-time favorites, and portions of this match are great examples of why. He is a sympathy magnet with his great selling. Everyone in this match delivers a really good performance. I do hate it's clipped, but this is just awesome. I love Taue's varied attack on the eye of Kobashi. Great finish. ****1/4 #441 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  18. Hansen charges out of the gate and starts the beatdown on Baba. Baba looks good firing back, and takes Hansen down by the left arm. Looks pretty painful - then Baba lays in the armbar. He goes to work on that left arm. Hansen's selling is amazing here as he tries to comeback but gets sucked right back into the arm submission. Hansen gets to the ropes and takes a powder. More greatness ensues as Baba dodges the lariat with a drop toe hold and gets back on the attack... later dodges another outside and Hansen's arm hits the ringpost. Baba is focused and Hansen is selling ketchup to the lady in white gloves. Hansen gets tied up in the ropes and it appears Baba beats the left arm until he is DQ'd. This was short, but SWEET! Hansens is nuts after. Loved this.
  19. I love the wrenching on the left arm from Bock. I agree Jumbo should have long term sold it. Had he sold it while on offense, it really would have been more dramatic when Bock hit the big knee in the corner and took back over on the left arm. Bock still performs like the all-time great he is, Terry Funk adds to the fun, and the feel good moment ... feels and looks really good. Overall, great stuff. ****
  20. This got better as the match went on. The best part about the match is just the fact it's these two guys facing each other. I thought it was good/solid. Nothing here really blew me away. ***
  21. This is really good, but I'd have it notch below KOTR and not in the same league as Survivor Series. I was a fan of Nash as a teenager, but I felt more invested in the match while Hart was on offense. Diesel's offense seemed a little bland to me in this encounter. Still, really good. ***1/2 I did like that HBK attacked the same leg that Hart had been working on during the match when he interfered. But, I do think the interferences took away from the match a little bit. #442 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-451/
  22. I've seen this match a few times, and I've always liked it. It really clicked with me today. I really enjoyed no commentary and the uniqueness of the match. It gives the feel that you are right there in the ring with them. For some reason, some of the moves felt so much more impactful. For example, the Russian leg sweep and piledriver that Bret gives Shawn in the first fall, looked and sounded devastating. Yeah, Bret wasn't too happy about the rope breaking. But, It didn't really take anything away from the match for me. Per usual, I liked a lot of the teamwork spots from the Rockers. ***3/4 #443 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  23. Windham works hard on the left arm of one of the greatest sellers of all-time. Windham looks awesome and creative with his attack, and Steamboat delivers on his reputation. I love that when Steamboat tries to fire back, the left arm gets in his way of where he's wanting to go. The damage is done, and Steamboat is going to have to find away around it. Steamboat decides to return the favor and has his own inspired attack on the left arm of Windham. Lots of good back and forth here from both guys. Steamboat's leg buckling on the Irish whip was a nice touch. This is a great match. **** #444 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
  24. I love the Inoki music. What an entrance! I love the comparison to a 90s action flick. Late 80s/early 90s action flicks are movies I throw on when I just want to chill and have a good time. There isn't too much to think about, other than how awesome this is. What a spectacle - ***3/4 #445 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/
