Just like the previous singles match from Steamboat and Mascaras (around this time), this never gets into second gear for me. I do think this was a little closer to doing that at times, as I thought parts of this were pretty okay. I felt like Chavo brought more intensity and fire to the match than Steamboat. I wouldn't have expected that going in.

I guess it is what you would expect. But, I don't like it. I watched this today on AXS TV on demand. If someone asked me to point them to the type of wrestling I don't like, I think I would use this match as the example. You can hear them audibly calling spots and counting timing together. At one point one of the Young Bucks stands outside the ring just waiting to catch someone, he catches them, then doesn't sell it and stands back up with three other guys to catch someone else. Along with those moves, Ricochet hits another crazy aerial maneuver in the match that does not look painful at all. He lands on his feet and doesn't really touch the other person. It was so choreographed and looked so planned out with no real emotion or any sense of reality to it. I mean no offense to anyone that would love this match or like it. But, It's just not my cup of tea (at all).

[1999-12-17-ECW-Nashville, TN] Mike Awesome vs Masato Tanaka
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in December 1999
I need to rewatch this! I was here for this live in Nashville, TN. I remember I sat close Tanaka, and we went over and shook his hand (or something like that) after he took his seat. During the match we made our way close to the guard rails, and my friend took a piece of a broken table home with him. I have the fancam of this show somewhere.- 6 replies

This was the first WCW VHS I ever owned (Bash at the Beach 1996). I remember smacking down a pretty good chunk of change at Suncoast for this bad boy. This was the perfect opening for a landmark PPV such as this one. Talk about perfect timing. Mike Tenay does a good job of a quick history on Rey Jr. and Psicosis. Their submissions look great, the moves are point, and then Psicosis hits a PERFECT suicide dive on Rey. Rey makes the perfect face in peril. You really want to get behind him as Psicosis works him over. I remember being immediately drawn to him as the underdog in 1996. I really love the leg work Rey pulls out on Psicosis. Psicosis hitting the senton from the top rope onto Rey on the floor is just crazy! Another great spot is the Rey dropkicking Psicosis in the back of the head off the ropes. This match, without a doubt, still totally holds up. It would be over huge if it happened today. Top 3 Rey match in WCW. #472 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/2/

I get the feeling from listening to the Flair podcasts, and probably other various interviews I've heard, that he just loved to wrestle Ricky Morton. I think a lot of him giving so much offense to Ricky was out of sheer respect and love for the man. Of course, the crowd loves Ricky too, and that is part of it as well. I thought Morton was simply perfect here. His selling, per usual, was great. I love the way he sells Flair's chops. Flair delivers some great looking punches. It doesn't get much better than this for a TV match. The crowd sounds super hot. Love this match. #473 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/2/

If you like this match, and you haven't looked into the Portland 80's Matt Borne stuff, then I would highly recommend checking it out. This brawl is intense! Kerry storms out of the gate with rapid fire punches, and Borne is firing right back. You can feel the hate. The punches look great. A discus punch eventually sends Borne over the top rope. They battle in and out of the ring for a bit and then the action spills into the parking lot. They battle on an El Camino during a thunderstorm! What a segment is right - This was great! #474 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/2/

[1996-04-28-WWF-Good Friends, Better Enemies] Shawn Michaels vs Diesel
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1996
I've seen this match many times, but it has been a while since the last time. I believe that Kevin Nash has stated that this is his personal favorite match. Shawn and Diesel don't waste any time. They look like they want to tear each other apart, and HBK hits the ring throwing punches. A big knee from Diesel cuts Michaels off. HBK uses his speed and agility to get the upper hand, and knocks Diesel to the outside to cool it off a second. Here we go. HBK is ready to go to work as he hits his standard moonsault into body cross maneuver from the top, he heads over to the Spanish announce table for a boot from an announcer. Off the top with the boot to the face of Diesel. Diesel eventually uses his power to get the upper hand and knocks HBK to the outside. Diesel takes over with his slower paced offense of power strikes, and smiles maniacally at the crowd to build heat. Diesel really draws the heat with his belt. He beats HBK with it - then starts choking him in the ring, and eventually hangs him off the side of the ring choking him. Shawn is selling great here, and Diesel comes around with a chair shot to the head. He stalks HBK into the ring with a powerful chair shot to the back. HBK barely gets to his feet and dodges another chair shot causing the chair to hit the ropes and rebound causing Diesel to basically be striking himself on the head with a chair. I've never really liked that spot. I feel like it never looks good. After a low blow, Diesel gets back on the offense sending HBK airborne. Michaels get some good hope spots in here showing his heart and resiliency. This is when we get the SICK powerbomb! Diesel sends HBK through a table and both monitors fold on top of him. The crowd is booing, which I found interesting. I think today the crowd would be cheering. Diesel had some real heat here with the WWF fans. Vince tells HBK "it's over, let it be over!" HBK is not giving up. Diesel peaks over the ring rope to grab HBK but gets a fire extinguisher blast in the face. HBK starts the comeback, and with no commentary which is cool. HBK goes back out for a chair and the commentary comes back. Diesel takes a blow to the head, and Vince is begging for a cover. But, it's not over. Diesel is back with a big boot to the head. HBK is laid out flat. Diesel goes for the powerbomb, but HBK reverses out and hits the flying elbow. He tunes up the band, but eats a lariat on approach. Diesel knocks HBK back to the outside. He goes back to attacking the throat. This is when Diesel steals the prosthetic leg of Vachon. THE lowest thing Vince has ever seen in his life. HBK reverses and calls his shot like Babe Ruth. Diesel eats the prosthetic leg followed by sweet chin music and the three count. HBK is still the WWF champion. HBK mocks Hogan quickly, which I also had never noticed. Awesome match. It's right up there with the Bret Hart/Diesel matches as probably the top 3 matches of Kevin Nash's career. I'd say **** is probably about right for this, maybe closer to ****1/4, but I'd probably go a little higher for his Survivor Series 1995 match against Bret Hart. #475 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/2/- 13 replies

Pillman's left shoulder/arm is taped up from War Games, and that is the focal point for Barry. Barry's attack on the left arm looks painful, and it is well varied. The selling from Brian draws the sympathy from the crowd, and that generates the chants for him. There are some good hope spots to give the crowd just enough. Barry gets the win after a roll up holding the tights. It's a quick match, but I really liked it. I think the post-match is what helps to elevate the moment to something more memorable. Windham is cutting a promo and gets a double axe handle from the top rope to the outside from Pillman. Pillman is fired up throwing some wild punches. Windham eventually gets back on top and really gets some heat. But, you can't keep Pillman down! Some more hope and more heat. Windham heads out and Gigante checks on Pillman. I agree, that's a good callback there. #476 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/

You would think so. Unless, that was all for nothing and they just wanted him to show up to try give the 900th episode a special moment. You would think that Smackdown will lose, so everyone has to tune in to see what The Undertaker is going to do with his threat since they lost. But, that probably won't happen. I do think we will see him at WrestleMania. One rumor not mentioned here - I had seen somewhere that Goldberg was talked about as an eventual opponent because of the great reactions he's been getting. Of course, there is also that Sting interview from a few months back where he is still talking about wanting to face Undertaker. It would seem that the most likely choice would be Cena, but who knows.

The Scorpion shows off her athleticism in the early going, and I like her attack on offense. I thought her submissions looked great, and striking was impactful. The kick to the back of the head of Cuty looked great, and Cuty sold it very well. I like Cuty's attack on the mat following this. Scorpion is very smooth with her movements in the ring. Cuty does some nice work on the arm taking it to the outside. We then get some more athleticism from Scorpion with a great looking splash, and a couple of attacks from the ring to the outside onto Cuty. We get an impressive German suplex on the outside from Scorpion onto Cuty. Eventually, another great looking German suplex followed by a pin gets Scorpion the win. She was really impressive here, and I enjoyed this match a lot. #477 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/

Terry gets thrown over the top, and Hansen starts beating him down, then he moves on to Dory and starts beating him down, and here we go! Funk is a bumping machine at the start of this match. Hansen delivers a vicious looking chair shot to Funk's back after Funk is thrown out of the ring a second time. When Dory gets tagged in, he does get some cool offense in on the face of Stan Hansen. I love the kick to the head, followed by stepping on Hansen's face and twisting his boot! Spivey doesn't bring much to the table, but when Terry is tagged in to face him, the crowd interest picks up. I liked Hansen charging into a hip toss from Terry, then Funk is back to throwing punches at Spivey. For the most part, this was the Terry Funk show, and the Terry Funk show is a really good show. Dory brought a lot more than Spivey though. Hansen picks up the win pinning Dory after the lariat. Fun stuff. #478 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/

I loved PG-13 working the crowd pre-match. They hug at about the mid-point, and it draws a ton of heat. I think the crowd was chatting "get a room." I thought the offense from PG-13 looked really good. The huracanrana from Wolfie (on Spike to the middle turnbuckle), as mentioned above, was the highlight to me too. It looked awesome. He followed it up nicely with a bulldog from the top rope. I also really liked the side-belly suplex into an elbow drop from Woflie, also onto Spike. I love the "oh shit!" from Dundee when he is mid-toss (in the air) after the hot tag to Mikey. Spike a Mikey get the win after a top rope dropkick from Spike. This was a fun little match. #480 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/

I enjoyed the offense from Tamura more than Kakihara. His striking looked good, particularly his knees, along with the leg submission work he did on Kakihara. Tamura came across as the seasoned professional and Kakihara seemed like he was hoping to get a lucky blow in and pull out an upset. He almost seemed to be fighting afraid to me. It's like he's throwing everything he can out, and hoping something sticks. He misses with one wild kick, but connects with another. He gets pretty excited about that. But, Tamura quickly settles him back down. The leg work pays off for Tamura and he eventually gets the win with it. It was worked pretty stiff, but I felt the match was just okay. #481 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/

The thing I appreciate about this match so much is how tight it is. The moves are very precise, and even though they are working this in a really fast pace, it still looks very professional. Even at this pace, the selling and the pacing of the selling itself seems to make sense in the context of the match. Owen's powerbomb on Kid is sick! Then we go into the sharpshooter after that power move on the back and Kid taps. Whoa, that was fast! I agree, this has to be one of the better 5 minutes or fewer matches out there. Two pros. #482 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/

Man, that is sad to hear. I'll echo too - really hope he pulls through, and would definitely like to see him in the 2017 HOF class.

[1992-04-14-WWF-Munich, GER] Randy Savage vs Shawn Michaels
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Like everyone else, I loved the selling of the leg by Savage on his way to the ring. His selling throughout this match is off the charts. Not only does he sell the leg with limping etc., but you can really see the anguish he is projecting through his facial expressions. This reminded me of the greatness of his match with Bret Hart at SNME in November of 1987. If you like this, and have not seen that, be sure to check it out. I really like that Sherri immediately tries to distract Savage from the outside by going for his leg. And, she eventually does get him which puts HBK on the offense for the early going. Savage gets on offense at one point, and goes for a body slam, but HBK hooks the injured leg for a roll up. I really liked that spot. I agree that HBK's threat to walk out didn't make since, unless he just wanted to make the injured Savage chase him down on his bad leg. Why would you want to walk out when you have the champion nursing a leg injury, and in a way, have him 2 on 1? HBK has a really great focus on his attack of the injured leg during the match, and I also loved Sherri building the heat when the referee is distracted (also attacking the leg). Once HBK locks on the figure-four, the crowd really starts to rally behind Savage. I know I've read/heard that Savage was a big proponent of Shawn Michaels. He really makes HBK look strong here. The announcers sell that Savage is in a career threatening situation if he doesn't find a way out soon. Once Savage is able to drive HBK into the ring post, he has to work through his injury to get to the top rope. Love Savage's selling during this. He nails the best elbow drop in the business onto HBK for the victory. Then Sherri hits the ring, and the double team assault on the champ begins! They use a chair and the belt! Savage is eventually escorted to the back with help, as HBK remains in the ring mocking Savage. Loved coming back to this. Very good match. Great story! #483 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/- 28 replies

Snuka is HUGE. Ricky shaved his mustache from earlier in the year. Some fun back and forth action starts this off, then we get a pretty solid king of the mountain spot from Snuka carried on the shoulders of Ricky's selling. The match slows down a bit after this and then Snuka totally botches a top rope maneuver and basically falls flat on his face. The crowd chuckles. It looked bad. Then, Steamboat blades ... but I'm not sure why...I guess it's selling a headbutt from Snuka. Snuka goes to work on the cut. He's bites it and you can see the blood in his teeth. He makes crazy faces, and his attack is pretty sinister. He misses an attack on Steamboat in the corner allowing Steamboat to take over. A pretty good nearfall from a top rope splash. Steamboat does his babyface thing, bloodied, cries out, unloads some punches and chops at the neck of Snuka. Steamboat gets DQ'd for hitting the ref and not backing off on Snuka. This match definitely had its up and downs. The botch really threw it off for me, but it got pretty fun after recovery. There's a good little brawl at the end. Overall, I'll say it was good.

[1990-02-10-NJPW vs AJPW] Larry Zbyszko vs Masa Saito
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
Looking back on my deep dive into 1990, this match really stood out to me. Prior to watching this, I had just taken a really deep dive into 80's AWA, so Saito was fresh on the mind. I thought he was really great at firing up in this match, and that Larry Z played his role perfectly. There isn't a full version of this online (currently), but I decided to watch the clipped version this time to get a different perspective with Larry Z on commentary. This comes in after the opening matwork and Larry Z proclaims he's been throwing Saito around like a sack of garbage. Saito is on the offense with some kicks to the lower leg of Larry, and we get the ball rolling with the low blow from Larry Z. You still get the awesomeness of the Saito hulk up after a failed pin attempt from Larry Z. Some really powerful looking strikes send Larry Z to the outside. They go back to the commentary booth after this to discuss the close pinfall. I definitely recommend finding the full version, it's much more enjoyable than the clipped one. You get the full story of the match that way, and you can really feel the emotion in the Saito comebacks. The crowd is SO into the Saito roll-up. I enjoyed going back and checking this out, but I'll probably break out the DVD (when I can) to see the full version again. #484 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/- 24 replies

[1990-01-26-USWA Texas] Jeff Jarrett vs Billy Joe Travis (Guitar on a Pole)
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
I watched the 1990 YB earlier this year, but for some reason the memory of this match did not stand out. But, I did remember that Lawler sweater when I pushed play on this. JJ comes in fired up! They are throwing some stiff punches to start this off too. The hip toss to the floor is awesome, and JJ already is nailing him with a chair. This is the era of JJ that I like best. The young babyface. I never cared for him too much in the WWF, and even less in WCW and TNA. The head smash into the ringside table looks brutal! Piledriver to the floor into a chair! He's murdering Travis. I remembered the match after the Lawler interference. This was really good stuff. I agree that the guitar doesn't looked gimmicked - It appears to be just a cheap guitar. Looks painful. The brawl at the end is really fun, and the chair shot from JJ onto Travis is serious! Loved revisiting this. #486 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/- 18 replies

[1997-02-24-WCW-Nitro] Eddy Guerrero & Chris Jericho vs Meng & Barbarian
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in February 1997
Love the Faces of Fear - I watched all the Nitros from 1997 again around 2006 or 2007, so it has been a while since I've seen this match. Barbarian starts off with so much energy, it's awesome. Holy shit - the "lawn dart" of Eddie G tossed up to the moon by Barbarian with the pancake landing (almost headfirst). HUGE powerbomb on Eddie by Meng. It is odd after all that punishment he didn't have to sell that longer, but this match is a sprint. It takes to the double team to get Meng down. It doesn't last long. FOF are a force to be reckoned with. Killer B2B suplex by Barbarian on Jericho - over his head off the top rope! FOF use an awesome double team powerbomb on Jericho too. Luckily EG breaks up the pinfall, because I want the match to go longer. Double headbutts by FOF and EG with another save. Great hot tag to EG after some face in peril from Jericho. I love the missed double lariat with a great looking dropkick from EG onto Barbarian. Malenko ends up interfering and pushing EG into the Kick of Fear and man that was fun. #487 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/ -
I'm not saying HBK had the best look, but I wonder if Marty could have gotten over more if he had updated his look a little bit. He still came out to the Rockers music here, and he still looked like a trapper keeper from 1989. Randy Savage says that within five seconds it's already one of the greatest matches he's ever seen. Ha, well it does start off fast, and the action sucks you in. I think HBK and Marty both do a really good job with the heel/face dynamic. HBK with the punches from behind and slower paced offense, Marty more explosive, and reminiscent of The Rockers. The DDT from Marty onto HBK looked sweet! I loved HBK's leg on the ropes, and fun timing for the commercial break. I've never really been a fan of the tied up in the ropes spot. HBK gets tied up, and when Marty goes at him he over shoots and HBK dodges. Marty spills to the outside. Diesel rolls Marty back in, and HBK gets the pin. I agree that the finish is a little off. I would have liked to have seen something else from HBK on offense resulting in the victory. The match was really good, and very fun, but it wouldn't be my WWF MOTY. I haven't watched much from 1993 in a while, but off the top, I know I think the Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect KOTR match is better. #489 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/

Jake is fantastic in the angle that leads to him suckering DWB into a title shot. Jake works the match to get into the head of DWB. Lots of taunting and talking with the ref. Lots of trading work on each others arms. Once DWB is knocked to the outside, The Samurai comes out and removes DWB's eye patch and leaves with it. The focus then goes to the eye. I love when Jake kicks a camera guy then pops DWB in the eye with the camera. Pretending to smoke after the win is pretty classic. I really enjoyed the angle, and the match was good. I agree that it's nothing that special from an action in the ring standpoint, but it's a very fun watch. #493 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/

The idea of Vader and Tenta teaming got me pretty hyped for this match. I love the taunting by Vader in the early going. Tenta talks Vader into letting him start, and they hug! I really wish these guys could have had a run in the US as Tag Champs. Vader's punches look devastating as always and the suplex on Yamazaki was cool. But, I really loved Yamazaki getting fired up after that, and they go back and forth trading strikes. Vader has such a great presence about him. It really does feel like he could take anyone in this match no problem. Vader man handles Albright down into the corner, and Albright fires back but tags out shortly. Yamazaki comes back in throwing some quick kicks - they look great. At this point in the match, I've enjoyed the Yamazaki/Vader stuff the most. The headlock he puts on Yamazaki looks super painful. Now Albright is in business with an impressive belly-to-belly on Vader followed by an awesome German suplex. Albright shockingly gets Vader to tap with an arm bar. I guess this sets up their match alluded to during the promos prior to the match. I might have to look into that. I have not seen it. #496 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-500-451/
